  • The reasons why we need our cars in Ireland. From Dublin being a car centric city. To people living in rural Ireland there are many reasons that people buy cars. Cars care expensive with the average car ownership coming being over 10'000 euro per annum. Getting to work. Travelling from one part of the city to another, you can travel your own route or take the M50. Areas of Dublin outside the city centre have high car ownership rates. Hospital appointments, much easier to collect someone from hospital if you have you own car. I you live in rural Ireland then travelling long distances by car is normal. Many small towns do not even have a shop and grocery shopping involves driving as does clothes shopping, hardware, meeting friends socialising, going to shows, bring livestock or bloodstock to shows, race horse meetings, weddings, christenings, going to General Practitioner or Dentist. Attending events, Holidays, towing your boat or horse box. Car can carry essential equipment for work. Car owners contribute a huge amount of money to the state through taxes (over €6 Billion) Cars drive economic growth. New car sales are up this year as people need their cars to go about daily life particularly if they are based in Rural Ireland. The Public Transport system in Dublin is 2nd rate when compared with other major european cities with parts of Dublin not being accessible to public transport and other parts taking much much longer to access as you have to travel to the city centre and then change bus.
