      Callie, I understand. I'm Brazilian and whenever I went abroad, people kept asking me about the Amazon rainforest. I had to explain to them that Brazil is a HUGE country with a lot of different climates and landscapes (even occasional snow in the nontropical South), that most of the population lives several thousand miles from the Amazon, that to most Brazilians the Amazon feels as exotic and distant as it is to foreigners, that most Brazilians have never seen the Amazon rainforest up close and probably never will, and that asking most Brazilians about the Amazon is like asking a New Yorker about the Grand Canyon.

      The same can be said for inland Australia. Most Australians barely leave the city, with 80% of the population spread between Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane, and will never see Uluru or Coober Pedy, and other places far inland.

    I'm actually a bit surprised that Juneau is "only" on the 58th degree when I live on the 59th here in Norway, and that's pretty far south. It's always like that, I look at USA and see Alaska and think it's oh so far north, but compared to my country it really isn't. But having the gulfstream run along our coast sure makes for a different climate.

    • @MrEeeaddict

      It's far north considering they have freaking LA and Florida in the same country smh

    • @nmpls
      @nmpls 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Not that it applies to Juneau, but just having an ocean is a huge help. When I lived in Minneapolis, at about 45, I had friends in Bodo (67) and points north, and it was consistently colder in Minneapolis in the winter. Like the daily mean in Minneapolis is -9C and in Bodo, -1. (Juneau is -2) And Minneapolis is warm for Minnesota.

    • @harrison1986a
      @harrison1986a 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Just remember Juneau is consider part of South-East Alaska :) While our north cape only beats Norway's by a tiny amount (point barrow is 71.38 degrees north where Nordkapp is 71.16) you are definitely right that the gulfstream does Norway a lot of favors. Having grown up in both places, Alaska is generally cooler and colder at similar latitudes. Swimming in the ocean is a no-go year round, ice keeps the north coast inaccessible for the half the year, etc.

      @@bobbyaiyer7917 Definitely would not sink the company as AS monopolize key routes or is a dominate player on said routes. Flying in Alaska is some of my very favorite. I’ve had the lucky chance to fly with Everts Air Cargo on their C-46, Dc-9 and MD-80 freighters to such places as Bethel, King Salmon and Anaktuvak Pass. I tried flying on a Dc-6 but unfortunately we had engine problems and had to do a gate return. Other favorite memories include jumpseating a C-130 with Lynden Air Cargo and flying on a B737-200 with NAC to Barrow.
    Fantastic video and I wish you many more AK adventures!

    Zig Zag Airlines is what it was always referred to as by my friends when I lived out on the Olympic Peninsula of Washington. As in Zig Zag tobacco wraps, the favorite of discerning pot smokers. When I took a job in the crabbing industry I took a hop to Anchorage from SeaTac on Alaska, we landed just as the sun cleared the mountains. It was a crystal clear day in the opening days of February of '92. The 10 of us had barely finished our breakfast before we were herded across the airport to a little puddle jumper for a 9 hour gauntlet of take offs and landings across Alaska and out to St. Paul airfield. We were cruising at no more than 20,000 feet as we over flew smaller mountain ranges and volcanoes. Oh to have the camera gear I have now.

    The "Milk run," I loved in the early 90s was Seattle, Juneau, Yakutat, Cordova then Anchorage. There was no lay over. It was done in a 737-300 (With the Pratt & Whitneys. The long skinny ones.) It was always a combi. For those who aren't aware, a combi is a configuration of cargo up front and passengers in the rear. They would open the front left side of the aircraft to load the containers. Kinda cool. Thanks for bringing back some loved memories with this video, Noel.

    I always fly economy. I personally find 737's More comfortable than many of the 787's and 330's. Surprisingly i've always had more legroom on the 737's.

      A320s are even better. Seats are about an inch to an inch and a half wider. Leg room depends on the airline. WN puts really big leg room in 738s (not -700s though) about 33in, while FR (no US ULCCs fly 737s) gives you 30. Spirit punishes you on an a320 with 28in while B6 gives you 34. UA only gives you 31 on recent widebodies in Y and 31-30in narrowbodies.

    I'm Glad you got a chance to stay in our small town of Juneau. I really recommend visiting in the summer. We here in Juneau also have a small airline called, Alaska Seaplanes. They serve the outer islands that can't support the 737. If you want to know more about our town or want recommendation for what to do if you ever visit. Let me know. I work for the Travel Bureau

    i have flown some of the milk run myself. if you want to do it right, you need to fly on the 737 combi when it does the milk run. the front of the plane had the freight containers and the back has the passengers. there is a movable bulkhead that is moved depending on the loads.

    I bet the pilots love doing this trip !! Hope the hotel had decent heating...looks bloody freezing outside !! I thought the same thing years ago...why is Bob Marley on the tail.....proudly all Boeing MAY mean the aircraft itself is made by Boeing where as Airbus is more of consortium of airline builders ??? Just a thought !!! Some stunning scenery amongst the clouds Noel !! One your best Noel...really enjoyed it. Reminded me of (at the age of 19...a long time ago) I went to work on Christmas Island in the Indian Ocean...and flew with TAA (now part of Qantas) from Perth at midnight to Cocos Island and then to Christmas Island. They carried a navigator in those days who used a sextant to navigate us safely and there were few passengers as the aircraft also carried a lot of freight and mail. It was in a 727 aircraft which did the run but once a week...and I met a man from Texas who had a hobby not unlike yours of collecting "unusual"boarding passes for flights like this around the world !! Thanks again mate and stay well in these most uncertain of times !!

    I wandered into Portage Glacier valley some years back and was stunned by the gorgeous blue sky and deep green mountains surrounding me. I asked a local if this was common (I was curious how the climate could be so nice and yet the trees so lush). She replied that just last year there was a day as nice as this one. 🤣

    As a Juneau local, I avoid the milk run as much as possible but it is a really important services for our rural communities. I used to be a fearful flier but after 17 years of flights around Alaska not much fazes me, hard landings and turbulence are very common. Glad you liked the Halibut!

    I live in Kodiak and have flown the milk run from Anchorage see family before. It's frequently the most reasonable flight to Seattle. Flights up here can be a trip. You should fly into Kodiak. Our runway starts on the water and ends at a mountain. My classroom is right next to the runway so I get to see the 2 flights a day plus the Coastie flights take off and land.

    Those rough landings are part of Alaska Airlines charm when flying to the smaller airports. I always said their pilots are bush pilots with jet engines. I flew them to almost all of their destinations in Alaska when working on their airport. As an airport engineer I did major reconstruction work on Ketchikan, Petersburg, Juneau, and Cordova as well as many projects at ANC!

    Alaska is beautiful! Too bad you didn't get to see more of Ketchikan as its a wonderful little town to walk around. I did an Alaskan cruise many years ago and while in Juneau I took a helicopter ride to Mendenhall Glacier where we landed and got to walk around in special ice boots! I was fortunate enough to sit next to the pilot and the views were stunning! You should take your family back to Alaska when the weather is warmer. I'm sure they would love it! Great video!

    “The Department of Transportation (DOT) subsidizes airlines to serve communities across the country that otherwise would not receive scheduled air service. As of June 1, 2015, 159 communities in the US received Essential Air Service subsidies, of which 44 were in Alaska.” - Wikipedia. Great video. Thanks for sharing.

    • @frogstamper
      @frogstamper 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah, that explains how Alaskan can fly this route with just a few passengers and de-ice three times, the de-icing alone costs more than £1000 at the minimum, so a subsidy makes sure these flights can operate for the locals.
