    This is absolutely the right way to do it. Been using this myself for decades. Just bear in mind that if you have 130 yr old house like mine, don't just measure top and bottom but all the way down. Victorian horse hair reinforced lath and plaster walls can vary hugely in thickness, up to an inch or more.

      I live in an 18th Century cottage..the extension was built in 1851. The plaster looks like cake icing!

    Reminds me of the apprentice days. We did more wall papering and decorative finish like sponge, drag and rag rolling than actually painting with emulsion. Nowadays trying to find a painter and decorator who can do these things is so hard to find. It’s like they don’t teach it anymore. My apprentices learn all these dying techniques. Decorating is definitely a great trade to learn as a career or a hobby.

    So many TH-camrs show how to do tradework fast and (maybe) good enough. They're dropping stuff, hesitating or making mistakes, lacking preparation and you can tell, of they were taught properly by a master craftsman, they hadn't picked up what they should have. I wouldn't be surprised if Aubrey teaches apprentices and they'd be lucky to have him. I get the impression he seldom has to redo work. Steady, smooth, does it properly, gets the job done very well. I wonder who taught him!? Thanks Aubrey very much for your videos - they have definitely given me more confidence, though I'm a bit slow, also trying to do it properly, with all your tips incorporated.

    I did my apprenticeship back in 2007. It’s only 2 years for level 2 and another year for level 3 which I managed to get. The work I did tho was mostly painting. Then the recession hit and I got paid off so joined the army. I’ve recently left and am trying to set up own decorating business. The painting side is fine but I wish I had of paid attention and used the bays available to practice my wallpapering back then instead of messing around 😂. Tried to get a refresh course but they want me to pay for the full thing. These videos are coming in handy just going to study them until I’m confident enough to advertise. It’s the attention to detail that’s the problem. Getting those little bits nipped. Thanks for the videos tho they are coming in handy.

    Can I ask: do we not need to use different paste for the overlap and do we not need a seam roller?

    • @AubreysAbsoluteDecorating
      @AubreysAbsoluteDecorating  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      If you are applying a vinyl wallpaper you will need to use overlap adhesive or PVA on the overlap. A seam roller should not be required. However, if you do use one, then place a piece of scrap paper over the area to be rolled to protect the surface or you will get a polished area which will show up.

    Surely if you slightly overlap the paper cut from the same piece, the pattern won't line up though?

    • @JoeProDecor
      @JoeProDecor 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      that is correct, but it is the only way you can do it in a corner as the corners are not 100 percent level and you cannot butt them up because of this. the whole point of this method is to make sure the seam of the wallpaper going around the corner is 100 percent level so it butts up to the next piece straight

    Hello Aubrey just a question I’ve been doing some wallpapering it’s a paintable vinyl. It’s paste the paper. When I book it, the instructions tell me to leave it for 5 minutes. The instructions also say use mixed purpose paste. After leaving it to soak and then opening the paper up it’s ripping the backing paper off. I’ve changed the paste three times and I get the same result. Any ideas what it could be?

    • @AubreysAbsoluteDecorating
      @AubreysAbsoluteDecorating  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It sounds like eiher the paste is very strong and may be causing the tearing or it could also be too watery which can cause delamination of the paper. For thik paste you could try flapping the paper over after pasting but only place it lightly on the surface and don't press it down while it is soaking for the five minutes. Alternatively, as it only requires five minutes, then just leave it unfolded for the five minutes. If the paste is to watery then discard and try an alternative paste. I do hope you find a way around this problem.

      @adammac4960 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating yeah I did three pastes later 😂. I left it open but the paper was drying out too quick so I started just booking it lightly so it was just touching. I'm so confused, surely adding 5mm to the width of the remaining cut off is going to leave you 5mm short of the corner? 27.5mm width, installed on a 28mm line?

    • @AubreysAbsoluteDecorating
      @AubreysAbsoluteDecorating  ปีที่แล้ว

      I have added the 5mm as a guideline for hanging the second piece. If you mark a line the exact width of the remaining piece then the line is often covered up when the piece is hung. It makes more sense when carrying out the process.

    Excellent tutorial. I've just decorated my dining room and pretty much did the same as Aubrey, except I measured and cut before pasting, which seemed more logical and less messy. For the life of me though, I can't trim wet paper at picture rails and skirting boards, even with a very, very sharp knife! I had to leave it overnight, then trim and in some places, use a paintbrush with paste to re-stick the paper. Looks ok in the end, and it's ok for a DIYer who can wait overnight, but I don't suppose a pro would get away with that.

    • @iancford
      @iancford ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Two options: 1. The knife blade needs to be razor sharp so use a break-off blade or get a sharpening stone for your Stanley knife. The metal straight-edge then needs to be held tightly against the paper and cut by using the blade at a low angle like is explained on the video. 2. Easier is to mark all along the corner where the paper meets the skirting board/ceiling with a putty knife then lift the paper away and trim a few mm in excess of the marked line with sharp scissors. That technique works fine if you can't master the knife technique.

    • @AubreysAbsoluteDecorating

      Hi , I use this line as a guideline. Overlap the first piece with the second piece right into the corner and then make sure that the edge of the paper runs parallel with the marked line. I have found that if I mark the line the exact width, the second piece can obscure the line. I hope that helps, Aubrey.

    Thanks for your help, everythings Is good, but you can do the corner in this way just with normal wallpaper, you can't do it using vinyl wallpaper, or not?

    • @AubreysAbsoluteDecorating
      @AubreysAbsoluteDecorating  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, the process is the same for vinyl paper but you need to apply some overlap adhesive to the the small strip that has gone around the corner with a small brush before you apply the second piece. This is because vinyl does not stick to vinyl very well. Hope that helps.

    When you transferred the small right side piece measurement to the wall did you measure from the end of the 5mm excise coming from the left wall or from the corner of the wall

    I saw another video, where they used a glue to glue the second paper in the corner. Is this not necessary? Is there a difference between the method for easy-up wallpaper or the ones made of paper? Thank you, your video was very interesting. Hugs from us in Sweden!

    • @AubreysAbsoluteDecorating
      @AubreysAbsoluteDecorating  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Ellie, If you are applying a vinyl wallpaper (plastic coated) it is advisable to apply some overlap adhesive over the 5mm strip in the corner before applying the second piece. The method shown in the video works for both types of paper. Thank you for the hugs Sweden 😊

    when going around external corners how much overlap do you use going round onto the other wall, I always though it was about 19mm, 3/4 of an inch but i have seen videos advising anything between 2 and 4 inches, which seems pretty excessive, your opinion would be greatly appreciated, thank you

    Did the paper overlap in the corner?

  • @charljordaan7887
    @charljordaan7887 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes this is a studio tetorial demonstration.
    Please bare in mind all decorators and myself that this does not refer to all older buildings and wonky Victorian lounges.
    Please always measure top middle and bottom and come onto the wall 5mm with each reading and not just 26.5cm all the way down otherwise you will get 5mm and 10mm over into the corner.
    When you out there in the real world dealing with clients and pressure you need to act and use your head and in some cases you need to go against the text book correctness.
    Even with plumb lines dropped bare in mind its just a guide so your paper is not scew but does not garantee a perfect drop. However itle help of course.
    Best way to learn is manual experience and pick up as you go also you will forget some steps over the years and remind yourself later ah!! ya thats how its done again.
    College and on hand experience are two different factors
    Good luck to all

    Great video, thank you. Just one thing, if you have a close tight pattern, when you overlap the corner by 5mm the pattern will not match, is there anyway around that? Thanks again.

    • @AubreysAbsoluteDecorating
      @AubreysAbsoluteDecorating  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hi, unfortunately you do loose a small part of the pattern, however, with only a 5mm overlap this is not so obvious when you stand back and look at it. If the room has corners which are pretty bad then a random pattern paper may be a better choice. Hope all goes well with the decorating 😊

    What wallpaper paste do you use?

    • @AubreysAbsoluteDecorating
      @AubreysAbsoluteDecorating  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I am using Solvite Wallpaper Adhesive in the video. The powder based version which is mixed with water. If you look at my video on how to mix wallpaper adhesive it will show you how. Alternatively you could purchase a tub of ready mixed adhesive and apply it to the back of the paper with a roller. The ready mixed adhesive is better when using paste the wall types of paper.

    Sorry to be pedantic but…. the first piece turns the corner at least 5mm but in some places more. For the second piece you measured 28cm from (the top of wall) where you had the 5mm turn. You didn’t say you used the pencil marks as a vertical guide, in fact you said be on the pencil marks - so the second piece would just touch the first piece at the top (but not reach the corner) and would overlap everywhere else. If you used the pencil marks as a guide only and put the second piece just to the corner at the top, elsewhere it would surely turn the corner and need to be trimmed??

    do you not use paste on walls as well as paper

    • @AubreysAbsoluteDecorating
      @AubreysAbsoluteDecorating  11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The paper shown in this video was the type where you need to paste the wallpaper. If the instructions say to paste the wall then I would follow those instructions. It may be necessary to first apply a thin paste solution to porous wall surfaces to provide a surface of even porosity. This is called sizing the walls.

    great video Aubrey , there is a thing when you marking the paper ,example paste paper as normal fold so both ends meet . then measure then get tape measure hold finger on tape where it needs to go run tape down making sure paper is lined up with edge of table lightly scoring paper if need be give it a second pass but keeping finger on tape . then first piece on left side would be right side . right side would be left by flipping paper right side up . and when overlap in corner use a small brush and run pva glue down just to give it extra bond i did it here so much easier imo .

    • @AubreysAbsoluteDecorating
      @AubreysAbsoluteDecorating  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Laddersman, yes that is a recognised way of marking a line using the tape, however, it may be a little difficult for an amateur decorator. I also do a similar thing and holding a pencil as you go to mark a line on foundation papers. Also a good idea with the PVA, particularly when hanging vinyls 👍

    From a time served decorator after cutting the paper you should wipe the paste from the paint work and then brush the paper back into place,also if the paper is a vinyl paper the overlap in the corner requires a vinyl overlap paste to be applied.
