Nice one, You helped me right out today. I’ve been painting for years but never got into the papering.. Just checking in from the Isle of Wight Aubrey to thank you kindly for your patient, clear & informed videos. With your help I found the confidence and motivation to finally give the decorating of my own room a good go. From stripping down my previous wallpaper, cleaning and prepping my walls, through painting the ceiling, skirting & door frames - I was able to take time to work in a structured and measured way thanks to your tuition. Sam.
That is brilliant news Sam, I am so glad you are finding the videos helpful. Hope all goes well with your future decorating projects. Have visited the Isle of Wight many times 😊🌞
Great video; so clear and helpful. I've finally learnt how to do external corners properly! Must say a plumb bob every time imo; gravity never lies unlike the bubble on a (dropped) spirit (not) level!
thanks man, i'm gonna take on my fireplace and you've taught me everything i need to know, i have my plumb bob. better than a spirite level in my opinion and with my eyesight. you're the man
Well thank you Aubrey for showing how Brit paperhangers do it. I've been a professional paperhanger in USA for 40 years. I've never not wrapped an outside corner. There's tricks if the wall is twisty. After wrapping we plumb next sheet and double cut if needed. I know you can't teach an old dog new tricks but I thought I'd throw it out there.
there is some benefit in wrapping and over cutting. It has the benefit of not leaving the edge of the wallpaper exposed to persons or animals rubbing round the edge and lifting the paper... we see that quite a lot. Particularly prevalent with the thicker papers.
Thanks, Aubrey. Just the job, havent wallpapered for years and needed some instruction for doing a patterned wall paper, and around external corners... I need some more revision so will look at your other stuff too. Thank you
Thank you Aubrey. New Year; New feature chimney breast wallpaper project. Watching you gives me the confidence to get on with it. You are always so calm and give lots of useful tips.
I am using peel and stick wallpaper right now and needed to know how to do inside and outside corners. You are so clear and concise! I learned so much. I can't say I'm a fan of peel and stick though😂 thank goodness I am using paste the wall wallpaper for the bathroom! You can bet I will be looking for a video from you that explains how to do this. Thank you!
Hi Aubrey, Great vid, I was taught to hang paper this way many years ago (bout 35-40) looks like we have the same tools as well, I will say though that I was taught to use the brush to sweep the paper round the corner! I got up to 2nd year City and Guilds but couldn't do my third year as the job I had @ the time was drywall partitioning and my boss wouldn't let me have time to finish. Only did decorating for a few years but it was good to see the finished rooms! TFS, GB :)
Hi, shame you didn't get the chance to finish your third year. I expect the skills you learnt through your training has been useful over the years. Yes, it is great to see a room transformed, I still enjoy that side of the job now.
Very well explained and like you said, the overlap is hardly visible on very thin papers. However, I do prefer to splice (double cut) my wallpapers and having them butted up nicely instead of having a visible overlap.
great video orb i am reluctant to hang paper although ive seen my dad do it hundreds of times and he learnt it of his dad. i feel like i should do a proper course this year.
Sounds like your dad`s a very good decorator and good paperhangers are often hard to come by. Let me know how you get on if you do sign up for a course 😊
Very good indeed. My only question, is this:- With those lovely flat walls, why would anyone want them papered and not given a nice coat of emulsion instead?
Your videos are so helpful - thank you! Any plans to do a video about lining papering around Windows and door frames please? That would be terrific. Thanks!
@@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating Regarding saving our 40 year marriage, can you suggest how we deal with removing a little foreign object under the paper on the finished wall? It's just a tiny little thing under the paper but it looks much bigger now the paper is over it, it draws the eye I'm afraid. It's distressed rough plaster effect vinyl if that helps. We have a few scraps left over but we can't replace the whole strip.
You could try making a small incision with a craft knife (Stanley Knife) and flicking out the foreign object. Then use an artists brush to apply some PVA glue under the cut and press back down. Wipe away any excess glue with a damp cloth. If you can, try to make the cut along the edge of a pattern so it is less obvious. This has worked for me before. Hope you get it sorted soon.
Thanks for the video, much appreciate it. I’m currently doing a chimney breast… and they have flat faces on the corners, with a triangular part at the bottom. Proving to be very tricky! This is my first attempt… so can’t be too hard on myself I guess 😅

How do you paper around uneven rounded corners? I’ve chimney breasts in 3 rooms and none of them are squared off, it’s really difficult trying to make them look decent
So, how did you get rid of the air pocket at the mid point of the corner of the wall, due to the corner of the wall not being 90 cegree angle? You didn't show that?

Yes it is ok to do this. I often do this myself especially when there is not a match on the pattern as you do tend to loose it a bit of the pattern due to the larger overlap required for the splice.

Hello Aubrey please help, I have taken some wallpaper off a wall which had emulsion underneath. The wallpaper has pulled some emulsion off with it which has left ridges on the wall. How can I make the wall smooth to reemulsion
