    A pure Genius...John Williams composed the music of my life

  • @fromchomleystreet
    @fromchomleystreet 2 ปีที่แล้ว +133

    Those first two notes of the main theme (fifth note of the key, up to the third note of the key above it - or the tenth if you prefer - over the tonic major chord) must be something Williams associates with romantic heroines. Leia’s theme, the Han/Leia love theme, and Marion’s theme from Raiders of the Lost Ark ALL begin the same way.

    • @yoshim616
      @yoshim616 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Both those pieces are lovely. The Han/Leia music is one of the themes I think is a bit underrated in Star Wars music. I think it should be as iconic as the main theme or the imperial March or the Force theme, I think it’s absolutely beautiful and epic.

    • @Joylibelle
      @Joylibelle 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Don't know what notes or keys, but after hearing this beautiful theme, the first song that entered my mind was Could This Be Magic by Donna Summer.

    • @tayo_95
      @tayo_95 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I always thought Leia's theme opened with an augmented 6th interval, but you're saying it's 5th to the 10th?

    • @fromchomleystreet
      @fromchomleystreet 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tayo_95 To be clear, I’m talking in each case about the theme proper, not the intro. The first note is the fifth scale degree, the second note is the tenth (or third in the higher octave). The interval *between* those two notes is a sixth (not an augmented sixth), but it’s the relationship to the tonic that is most significant.

    • @bogdan.sfetcu
      @bogdan.sfetcu 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah those major 6ths are one of his trademarks for love themes. Also in Superman he uses them. And for harmony he likes using the 1st scale degree chord and a minor 4th. We can also see this in Stargate (David Arnold).

      Yes, it's very vintage sounding, like something out of the 30s-50s era. I've noticed Williams' latter scores sounding more old-fashioned over the last decade or so. It's seems he's returning to the roots in the latter days of his career.

I don't mean that negatively. I liked Reys theme for example. But I miss also the more clear themes like that and especially in action themes. Something like asteroid field etc. But he stays the master of classic scores. My favourite.

    Why is it that so many composers have the first violin section doubling wind solos or soli’s? The strings completely drown out the soloists. Notable examples that pop in my mind from the classical repertoire are Beethoven 6, Brahms 3, and Heldenleben (although it was the cellos that drown out the horns in that piece).

    • @williamrowell4942
      @williamrowell4942 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's all about voicing. In a studio or in the composers heads, it allows the voices to be heard. In concert, that subtlety is often lost. We instead still get a nice full sound, with woodwind bringing warmth to the violin section.
