16x9 - Freeganism: Living off trash

  • They live for free. They eat for free. Or as close to free as they can manage. They're more than frugal; they're freegans. With recession woes inspiring more people to look for meaning outside the mall, freeganism is gaining ground. But is it possible to live off other people's trash? Mike Drolet gets an inside look at living the freegan life.

I grew up homeless from age 3 or so with my mom until around 11, and with the amount of bureaucracy surrounding food banks and other government agencies, the food in the dumpster is often fresher, and more healthy. I remember on one occasion, we went to the food bank and got two cans of tomato sauce, some peanut butter and a couple cans of "fruit cocktail", the next night my mom went dumpster diving and came back with practically fresh bananas and apples, packaged salad mix, day old bread, carrots and "expired" cliff bars. Let me tell you which of those two sources kept a small child from starving!

I have worked for *KFC* for a month or so. People don't realize, in order to maintain the *"fresh & ready"* brand, KFC has a _"keep frying"_ policy, irrespective of whether customers are there or not.
So (based on day, time & location) every KFC always fries _at least_ 10 kg of chicken (about 40 to 50 pieces) *every hour.* BUT if customers don't turn up, they THROW ALL that precious *FOOD* every 2 hours, and fry AGAIN ! (I don't even know who came up with the 2 hour rule).

instead of throwing all that food out they should be loading it into vans and donating it to the local homeless shelters! Heck I would drive around for free and pick it up and donate it. Some shelters are strict about what they take, but I guarantee you a starving person with a family to feed wouldn't care if this is where the food came from. I understand the people who do this usually do it to save money, but there are so, so many people who could benifit from all that food! The stores who put locks on their dumpsters or purposely smash and ruin food so that people can't take it home sicken me too, they weren't going to get any money for it anyway so why stop people from taking it. It's not like people who are well off are just going to stop paying for groceries and dumpster dive anyway, they're not going to make less money.

Sadly its not so easy or even possible over here in the UK, at least in the region I live. The dumpsters are locked or sabotaged to stop needy people from 'dumpster diving'. Its a crazy world for sure.
Years ago when I was younger, my brothers & I used to trek over fields & a wood at the back of our housing estate at night to the back of a foodstore that threw away vast amounts of edible good food, still in its packaging. We were struggling to get by on a miniscule budget & our weekly visits to this store's dumpster rewarded us with bag fulls of treats we could never afford to buy, it was fantastic. It made our mum happy too, she was suffering with severe depression as a single parent trying to make ends meet.
We weren't doing any harm, not trespassing (the dumpster was in a public parking lot) or leaving any mess but eventually, the manager or one of the store workers realised what we were doing & put an abrupt stop to it by opening the packaging & throwing it all about the dumpster. I thought that was pretty darn low & mean. Still, it was fantastic while it lasted. Vast amounts of food are wasted, its unforgiveable when so many people are going hungry. Just idiotic.

They used to give food near expiration to charities but they would sell this food on ebay. Then these people would bring the food to super market for refund. Supermarket the one I worked at used to sell some food that was not suitable for public for fraction for staff, but people started to be super bitchy that it was not available when they are at work etc so they stopped it. So this is just three examples when minority screw it up for majority.

Yep. I work at Panera Bread in California. This elderly man came in one night while I was working, with food he said he purchased from our store just an hour ago. He said the order was wrong but he and his wife didn't notice until he got home and they had eaten a bit of it. He then proceeded to flash a wad of cash saying ' I don't mind spending my money here, I just want the order right'. My manager had to remake this man $30 worth of food AND refund him. The food was from Panera but not our location as he claimed. How do we know? There were panini press marks on the bread. We don't have a panini press. He probably had already done that same scheme at another Panera and had to come all the way to our location where no one recognized him. We couldn't say anything though because we aren't allowed to accuse guests of lying. It might not seem like a big deal to have lost $60 that night. But when you're in an area with a bunch of con artists and teenagers, the cost starts to rack up.

Queeenbougie because people will always try to find a quick buck. I use to work at a bakery that use to donate the food at the end of the day to a homeless shelter. The homeless happily ate the bread, bagels, cookies, pies, cakes, etc from the bakery... until a worker at one of the shelters ate a doughnut and got “sick” (she claimed she felt queasy after eating it and started sweating). She then sued said the bakery for making her sick. Long story short after a lot of back and forth with lawyers, the bakery stopped giving their leftover food to homeless shelters. According to the advice their attorneys gave them, it was better for the bakery to have homeless people go through their trash than partner with a shelter. By actively throwing away the food, the bakery was no longer liable if the food made the consumer sick.

In any case, there were a bunch of fast food places right across from their camp. The managers all put the unsold items in bags inside the dumpster enclosure but not in the dumpster for them. About people saying give it to charity like food banks: They have really strict rules.
Most food that gets thrown out isnt fresh tommorow or today and by the time it would reach charity it would at least be a few days over date which means that it gets thrown away anyway.

Bed bugs are especially awful and are very difficult to get rid of. A very thorough wash would rid most food of any sort of issues-especially foods with peels. Cut that sucker off, go to town. I think if someone is willing to go this route for food they would use common sense as well. Maybe not, I don't personally know them after all and desperate people do desperate things. +Troll King Um... No. To be fair, I have worked at numerous grocery stores in Canada. In all of them, we would take the roasted chickens that didn't sell and turn them into chicken pot pies, and ready made soups. We would never throw chickens out like that. Ever.

EXACTLY. This is why retailers don't want people dumpster diving and they make it as difficult as possible. If they are seen, in any way, as encouraging people or inviting people to eat the food, they are on the hook if someone gets sick. The risk is built into the retail price of the food, but not for food that people are taking from the dumpster.

I work at a health food grocery store and yeah they donate all our out of date food to the local food bank, because they get a kick back in taxes so... This kind of thing might stop when they find they can do that instead. Also, we put the items that are going out of date soon down to a half off clearance price. You do have to be careful what food you get out of those trash bins, because we only throw away the moldy, really bad food. We also have locked bins for cattle feed, that we put items that are stale or opened or damaged in to. We have a really tight system.

I take books and CD's to the library. I'm starting to gather up clothes and will probably give them to a thrift store that supports a homeless shelter. Too much is wasted now days. It still seems to me that non perishables and bakery goods could be donated to a food bank.

They have no idea what they're putting into their bodies & what's contaminated or contains dangerous chemicals. God bless them though for everything they do for the environment and helping so many people❤ I just couldn't put something in my body that's meant to be healthy, but has garbage juice and boogers all up in it.
