    I wondered where the gauge was set on the needle, the tip or the barrel. Now I know. I am disabled and can not get out on my own. Prayed for a knitting mentor. I have found one. Thank you.

    How is it possible that I have never heard this before! I knew it was the barrel that sized the stitch, but I thought it happened when you wrapped the yarn, so I have always pushed the needle through and wrapped the barrel. Now it appears that everyone knew to knit on the tips of the needles but me. I guess this is one of the things you are taught if you are not self taught and try to figure everything out for yourself. Thanks again, Suzanne!

    I have watched many videos about my tension problems as I am a crocheter and wanted to learn to knit, as a beginner even tension is one of my biggest issue. Most of the video tutorials that I have watched nobody is really emphasizing how big the effect on knitting between just the tip of the needle rather than pushing it with the barrel and causes it to stretch. your video really really does make sense and helped fix my tension issues. Thank you and so happy to have found your video.

For the first time in my many years of knitting I am actually practising improving my edges and using the tips of the needles more effectively. This is very helpful! I am a knitter of about 40 years and a thrower but knit 2 handed for colorwork and my continental tension is all over the place. I am determined to knit a very complicated fair isle sweater and wanted to improve my continental tension prior beginning that project. I was tempted to fast forward this through the English segment- but am happy I watched that part too. I have improved my tension for both methods overall- a big thank you!

    I often use bamboo needles that yarn doesn't glide on so well. That being said, though I'm a lefty, I have a difficult time doing continental because I've crocheted many years, left-handed, and my finger just doesn't want to stay airborne. 😁. I'm practicing the Continental method, here and there, though, because it looks awesome.

    Hi, Suzanne. I just found your channel yesterday when someone kindly shared one of your videos on the Knitting Paradise forum. I am a 66 yr old native Floridian. Mom taught me to knit English style more than 55 years ago. There are crocheters in my family, but Mom was the only knitter I have ever known, as unbelievable as that sounds. I piddled around with making scarves, hats and occasional sweaters over the years until I stumbled upon Knitting Paradise about three years ago. A whole new world opened up to me and I have been working on learning new techniques and now consider myself a competent intermediate knitter. I also transitioned from throwing to right handed flicking about two years ago and found that improved my tension quite a bit, though my purls still tend to be very slightly looser than my knit stitches. I’m starting to think about trying Continental and watched your series of short videos on that subject. After today’s housework is done, I will sit down with my sticks and string and give it a try. Wish me luck!

    Brilliant! I've *really* been struggling to control my tension since I injured my right wrist and hand several months ago. Although I've mostly healed, my hand tires more easily now and I get intermittent numbness or pain as I'm knitting. All of those things cause momentary changes in the way I hold my needles and form stitches, which affects my ability to keep an even tension going.
    This simple change of forming stitches on my needle tips has increased the length of time I can knit comfortably and my stitches are even more uniform and evenly tensioned than they were pre-injury!
    Thank you SO much for this and for all your videos and tutorials. You're a gem. :-)

    I am so happy to learn this. For the most part, my tension looks pretty good, but I've noticed when I block a garment, I'll inevitably notice a few (not many) random stitches that really stand out as being larger than the other stitches. They are generally near the center of a row. It's aggravated me because I've not been able to figure out the cause. Now, I know. Thank you!

    • @SuzanneBryan
      @SuzanneBryan  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Excellent. That is probably where you rearrange the stitches and yarn in your hands and you get a gap in the tension.

    I tried this and - low and behold -- my stitches were no longer so loose! but working on the tips makes me afraid of dropping stitches because they are so close to the tip! BTW, I love what you do with your middle finger when you knit continental.

      Yay, this is wonderful to hear, LJK! As far as working on the tips of your needles, I would highly recommend this and really with practice it will become second nature. ❤️

    I'm taking another stab at continental knitting as I want to knit more efficiently, not necessarily faster. Suzanne's needle "tips" and her method of holding the yarn in the left hand (over both the index and middle fingers) has brought a huge improvement to my technique. Thank you, Suzanne!

    I’ve been knitting on my tips for years now as it’s faster, sometimes I worried about getting a smaller stitch but pleased to see your video. Thanks. Btw English or thrown knitting is much faster if you rest the right hand needle on top of and between your thumb and first finger, then you don’t have to have such a big ‘throw’ …

    i found you today when searching for a specific knitting how to video and subscribe immediately after watching. this is exactly the kind of videos i love -- short, clear, to the point. and yet still so informative! i love that you talk about the WHY, not just the HOW!!!!
    you mentioned using your right index finger to move the finished loop down the needle. are you also by chance using it to anchor the loop size? I've been crocheting for decades but have only dabbled with knitting on and off. (have knitted 3 headbands and 1 pair of socks. and lots and lots and lots of swatches!) I'm still having so much trouble with my tension. i was pulling my needles way too fast apart, so I'll change that. but i also struggle to keep the previous loop the right size while I'm making the next loop. hence my question about whether the right index is also anchoring the loop size...

    I will definitely try this method. My tension is fairly consistent, but lately I have noticed that in the middle of a row the tension is bit looser than at the beginning and end of the row. Thank you. I truly enjoy your videos.

    Hi I’m using this method and I thank you so much for your help! It’s helped me on smaller needles but for some reason on bigger needles I’m not having the same result. I’m working on the love note so the size 6mm needles and I’m struggling with my tension.

    My mom is teaching me in the continental style and I have an issue where my stitches end up too tight, and I can't easily pick them off the left needle, and it's really hard to push them down the right needle. Going tip to tip as you do in this video, my loops get stuck on the tips of the right needle, and don't easily roll down. My mom says it might have to do with the needle I am using (wood) and suggested I try metal ones. I guess I just need to practice a lot more, but this whole thing is quite stressful and I often struggle with even holding the needles properly or using my fingers to help. I'm going to try to hold them the same way you are in your videos. I really want to make my first scarf! Thanks a bunch, wish me luck :)

    Thank you Suzanne! I know now this is why I had trouble with my continental knitting after watching your informative video. I’ve recently switched to the American style flicking method where I’ve found I can keep the proximity of the yarn closer between the needles as well as work closer to the tips. But I like using different knitting techniques so will try this again when I’m in the mood to go “continental” again. Thanks for the great tip.

      Knitting with Suzanne Bryan - Hi Suzanne, I’m back to continental style for a current project and just finished the swatch using your method of tips knitting. What a difference! I made your words from the video a mantra “form the stitch, slide it down the barrel.” As long as I kept that mindfulness going, the results were great! Thanks so much again for all you do for the knitting community. Blessings!

    I've been using needles much larger than the label would recommend for a lighter, summer sweater. I have found no tolerance for tension mistakes knitting this way. I found this video very helpful -- knit on the tips, let the barrel shape the stitch.

    Awesome video as usual Suzanne, this is truly a game changer tip. When I first started knitting in the 60s I wondered why the stitches looked good sometimes and crummy other times! Just knowing about the barrel connection would have been a light bulb moment that took me a while to figure out on my own.

    Even tension has not been a problem for me. Working purl stitches continental style for many stitches aggravates my tendinitis. I constantly switch back and forth from English to continental, to prevent injury, to do color work, and for things like ribbing, seed stitch, etc. I’ll take a second look so I can get into the habit of working on the tips of my needles. Thanks ❤

    • @SuzanneBryan
      @SuzanneBryan  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Wonderful. Notice that the way I work Continental, there is minimal movement of my hands. It is much less traumatic in the long run.
