@@narrowroadtraveler4167 thanks for your suggestions but i do have one of those ear muffs that ppl use it on a gun range. it's somewhat bulky and uncomfortable so i don't use it all the time when going to bed, but i was surprised it completely blocked out rooster's cry last night. i tested it while it was crying so i can confirm it works haha.
As someone who raised chickens growing up, they don't. They crow whenever. Especially at 3am during a full moon and refuse to shut up. And then you spend the rest of the night contemplating whether you want fried chicken, chicken soup, or chicken and dumplings for breakfast.

In a time when few people could read, the crescent moon was the symbol for women while the star cutout was for men. I saw the heart placed on your post, so I'm pretty sure that they'll be a TIFO video on the subject soon enough!

Nothing is worse than sheep. I HATE sheep. They're Dumb as cows and as noisy as roosters and ate less useful and less valuable. Sheep are a dumb animal.
Another bonus fact, hens cluck little egg songs when they are about to lay… and roosters can and will also sing this egg song when he sees his hens laying. Roosters will also pick out good spots for his hens to lay by doing a little dance (different from mating dance) and make cluck sounds indicating that it is a good safe spot to lay. These behaviors are depending on the breed you have. Our black sexlink rooster doesn’t really do these things unlike our mottled houdan or the black copper maran who are very vocal charismatic boys.
I don't know about this. We have always had chicken and rooster with them but at night the rooster is put into a closed dark box with a dark blanket over then in a dark shed to stop the stupidly early crowing and they won't do anything until the blanket is removed and most don't crow until the box is opened or removed from the shed. This has worked for 50+ roosters myself and my family have owned.

Unfortunately the Americanism of " chickens " meaning hens has swept all before it in recent years. When I was young and listened to Rowan and Martin's Laugh In on BBC 2 , they did a sketch based on Old MacDonald Had A Farm , to which one of them repeatedly retorted " all I got is chickens ". This sounded odd to my ears. My father and his mother in law had lots of hens on their farms - but would never have called them " chickens " , unless they were still under a hen or brood lamp. Now we are stuck with it. What are chickens ( youngsters ) to be called then ? Chicks?
ive been watching this guys videos for a while now and i think its quite interesting to see the change in the way he conducts himself in the progression of videos. in the top tenz videos it was a bit more awkward and unnatural but in these videos hes super confident and forward and legit has good information to share with the world

I was of the opinion one of the reasons for the norning crow was to effectively collect up it's harem. Sort of like a siren at a factory announcing the work day has started. Free range chicken don't allways roost together so it was the roosters method to call them to gather to start the days activities.
So I live near a Rooster(s) and at 5:30'ish am (DST included, is accounted in this theory) they crow, WHY because at 4am (98% of the time depending on acts of God like hurricanes and such) is usually the coldest part of the morning as the sun pushes the lower pressure across the land (As such a "WAVE" it heats up the oceans, earth and everything else that the Sun touches behind the lower pressure and the forward wave builds. This continually happens do to the orbit and Earth's rotation. P.S. it's happening right now. Oh God the Humanity!!!). AnyWay as the the air starts to warm up usually around 5:25'ish am the Roosters begin to wake up and start stirring about which leads to eventual CROWING!
Very nice but the experiments including them crowing when kept in the dark, clearly not outside. In which case they crowed on a 23.8 hour cycle. No Sun involved.
In Romania, we say that roosters' crows are telling the time, i.e. it usually it's x o'clock when they crow. And I legitimately heard a rooster crow at midnight. Also, moaaaaaaar bloopers.
Alternative theory, chickens have long since lost their dominion over the skies when they became flightless birds. Interpreting the sunrise as the skies showing off, the sight of it fills them with a towering rage. As they are earthbound the only way they can vent this frustration is by defiantly crowing at the first signs of dawn to announce their intent to one day reclaim their flight.

lol a 5 minute video - When a rooster crows, he's sending a signal to other roosters that if they trespass, they're asking for a fight. A rooster will often crow from a vantage point above his territory so he can make others more aware of his presence and so that his songs travel farther.

My mother in law grew up on a farm and she had a rooster that was a ornery little butt. It would chase and spur her siblings and it would crow all the time when it was doing it. It would also crow when it saw her. She says it was a different sounding crow depending what it was doing
we had chickens when I was a child, and our rooster sometimes crowed to a full moon. Also, had a hen who was the "queen" of the harem, but after she disappeared to mind her clutch of eggs, outside the coop, was ostracized by the rooster and other hens upon her return... apparently had lost her rank in the harem... she never did get her rank back, and in her later years started crowing.

I haven't watched the video yet, but I can tell you that roosters crow whenever they feel like it -- even in the middle of the night. That really annoys some people, but I just consider it to be part of the ambiance of rural life.
My current rooster will usually crow only once a day, when he hears me open the door to come out and feed them. A big change from his predecessor, who crowed constantly and was very territorial.

I heard that the idea of a duck's quack not echoing comes from the fact that a quack pretty much always echoes, so people think they're hearing a clean quack when they're actually hearing an echoing quack.
I think part of the confusion is that coyotes, unlike wolves, do in fact howl at night. They're not howling at the moon, but at one another -- they're usually either calling to family members so they can be reunited or announcing to rivals that the immediate territory is taken. When I lived in East Texas there was a coyote family nearby and you could hear them calling to one another on occasion.
@@fearless4him595 Maybe Eastern coyotes have that concern due to the prevalence of wolves, but Western coyotes only compete against humans and one another. Interestingly, Eastern coyotes show signs of having cross-bred with wolves, and are consequentially large enough to hunt deer.
Does this mean that if a rooster from Europe moves to America, he will continue to crow at the same time, which is now midnight? "Damn Yankees will not trick me into believing their sorcery! I know damn well what dawn is, and I'll crow when *I* think it's appropriate!"
The reason for crowing at dawn is the same as most birds in the dawn chorus. It is quietest then, and their voices travel further in the still cold air. Where I am, the rooster is NOT the first call made, as their main call out of the day starts around 90mins before daybreak, but they never interrupt the owl looking for his mate just before then. Once the roosters have had their say the wood pigeons are usually next to say good morning, and the rest of the birds soon join them. Insomniacs notice these things.
Ok so here in puerto rico their are wild chickens everywhere. and without question hands down proof of their annoying crowing is the fact they crow more at night than during the day.. why? They crow as a means of warding off rivals. As such if they hear another rooster crowing, they will crow even more to fend off those potential rivals. The quieter it gets at night the more they will hear other roosters. During the day, if theirs alot of man made noises, it prevents them from hearing other roosters so they stop. The crows are not driven by the time of say or sunlight. its driven by competition. BUT its not to say that wild animals behaviors are not changed from what once was. If you listen to bird song.. and pay close attention to their chirps and noises. youl come to realize most of their calls are in fact the sounds theyve picked up from our own activities. from screen doors opening closing, to car alarms activation and deactivation chirps. To the revving of motorcycles, car horns you name it. One day i came to realize this and was shocked at the sounds the birds were making. because i could recognize so many of them fairly easy.

where I'm from they crow at all times of the day. however while it is still dark they seem to be having a worship chorus each morning. the is a distinct pattern as in this one goes then the other and so on with distinct breaks each lasting about the same time.
Have you ever done a video on a dog anticipating his person coming home from work? There's one anecdotal video of a guy who came home early, and his dog seemed to know it, doing his "coming home routine" earlier than normal, coincidental to the early arrival of his person. Thanks.
And to call hens to food, in the case of free ranging or "wild" birds; perhaps anecdotal but the animals do seem to use calls for that type of communication. I'll also note that the crow as we think of it is a warning call only; the rooster makes a whole other sort of racket when it's actually pissed off and going for your ankles.
Roosters are natural alarm clocks. They helped people wake up in the morning for thousands of years.

I have a couple of bantam hens (a gold lace seabright, and a japanese bantam) which are kept separate from the rest of the birds, and one of them will on occasion start crowing, or at the very least will try.
I was of the opinion one of the reasons for the norning crow was to effectively collect up it's harem. Sort of like a siren at a factory announcing the work day has started. Free range chicken don't allways roost together so it was the roosters method to call them to gather to start the days activities.
So I live near a Rooster(s) and at 5:30'ish am (DST included, is accounted in this theory) they crow, WHY because at 4am (98% of the time depending on acts of God like hurricanes and such) is usually the coldest part of the morning as the sun pushes the lower pressure across the land (As such a "WAVE" it heats up the oceans, earth and everything else that the Sun touches behind the lower pressure and the forward wave builds. This continually happens do to the orbit and Earth's rotation. P.S. it's happening right now. Oh God the Humanity!!!). AnyWay as the the air starts to warm up usually around 5:25'ish am the Roosters begin to wake up and start stirring about which leads to eventual CROWING!
Very nice but the experiments including them crowing when kept in the dark, clearly not outside. In which case they crowed on a 23.8 hour cycle. No Sun involved.

In Romania, we say that roosters' crows are telling the time, i.e. it usually it's x o'clock when they crow. And I legitimately heard a rooster crow at midnight. Also, moaaaaaaar bloopers.

Alternative theory, chickens have long since lost their dominion over the skies when they became flightless birds. Interpreting the sunrise as the skies showing off, the sight of it fills them with a towering rage. As they are earthbound the only way they can vent this frustration is by defiantly crowing at the first signs of dawn to announce their intent to one day reclaim their flight.
@Ron Krzaczyk I've had chickens in the past. They seemed perfectly happy up in the trees, or walking around the roof. They definitely didn't climb up there.

My rooster crows for no reason all at, all the time, like 50 - 75 times a day/night, Its like he just love doing it. He even crows in his sleep.

lol a 5 minute video - When a rooster crows, he's sending a signal to other roosters that if they trespass, they're asking for a fight. A rooster will often crow from a vantage point above his territory so he can make others more aware of his presence and so that his songs travel farther.

I do have a rooster leading my flock of hens but the most highest-ranking hen of the bunch also crows sometimes early in the Morning as well.
Hens cluck more and louder in the morning too. We have one hen who gets on top of the highest thing around to crow too.

My mother in law grew up on a farm and she had a rooster that was a ornery little butt. It would chase and spur her siblings and it would crow all the time when it was doing it. It would also crow when it saw her. She says it was a different sounding crow depending what it was doing
we had chickens when I was a child, and our rooster sometimes crowed to a full moon. Also, had a hen who was the "queen" of the harem, but after she disappeared to mind her clutch of eggs, outside the coop, was ostracized by the rooster and other hens upon her return... apparently had lost her rank in the harem... she never did get her rank back, and in her later years started crowing.

I stayed at a campsite once where there was a rooster who crowed from 2am onwards, repeatedly. I thought longingly of stuffing him with Paxo.

I haven't watched the video yet, but I can tell you that roosters crow whenever they feel like it -- even in the middle of the night. That really annoys some people, but I just consider it to be part of the ambiance of rural life.

My current rooster will usually crow only once a day, when he hears me open the door to come out and feed them. A big change from his predecessor, who crowed constantly and was very territorial.

I liked this video. we had several chickens growing up and mistakenly, a rooster. It was the torment of my childhood. loud and aggressive.
I heard that the idea of a duck's quack not echoing comes from the fact that a quack pretty much always echoes, so people think they're hearing a clean quack when they're actually hearing an echoing quack.

I think part of the confusion is that coyotes, unlike wolves, do in fact howl at night. They're not howling at the moon, but at one another -- they're usually either calling to family members so they can be reunited or announcing to rivals that the immediate territory is taken. When I lived in East Texas there was a coyote family nearby and you could hear them calling to one another on occasion.

@@fearless4him595 Maybe Eastern coyotes have that concern due to the prevalence of wolves, but Western coyotes only compete against humans and one another. Interestingly, Eastern coyotes show signs of having cross-bred with wolves, and are consequentially large enough to hunt deer.

The reason for crowing at dawn is the same as most birds in the dawn chorus. It is quietest then, and their voices travel further in the still cold air.
Where I am, the rooster is NOT the first call made, as their main call out of the day starts around 90mins before daybreak, but they never interrupt the owl looking for his mate just before then. Once the roosters have had their say the wood pigeons are usually next to say good morning, and the rest of the birds soon join them.

They crow because they see angels.
Ok so here in puerto rico their are wild chickens everywhere. and without question hands down proof of their annoying crowing is the fact they crow more at night than during the day.. why? They crow as a means of warding off rivals. As such if they hear another rooster crowing, they will crow even more to fend off those potential rivals. The quieter it gets at night the more they will hear other roosters. During the day, if theirs alot of man made noises, it prevents them from hearing other roosters so they stop. The crows are not driven by the time of say or sunlight. its driven by competition. BUT its not to say that wild animals behaviors are not changed from what once was. If you listen to bird song.. and pay close attention to their chirps and noises. youl come to realize most of their calls are in fact the sounds theyve picked up from our own activities. from screen doors opening closing, to car alarms activation and deactivation chirps. To the revving of motorcycles, car horns you name it. One day i came to realize this and was shocked at the sounds the birds were making. because i could recognize so many of them fairly easy.
I'm a minute in and two things came to me: One someone took the time to study roosters crowing and two, it until 2013 to do so.
No one who has been near a farm would think that roosters only crow in the morning.

where I'm from they crow at all times of the day. however while it is still dark they seem to be having a worship chorus each morning. the is a distinct pattern as in this one goes then the other and so on with distinct breaks each lasting about the same time.
Given the "dawn chorus" performed by other birds it surely is a general thing for Avians

Short answer: to mark territory and show dominance.
And to call hens to food, in the case of free ranging or "wild" birds; perhaps anecdotal but the animals do seem to use calls for that type of communication.
I'll also note that the crow as we think of it is a warning call only; the rooster makes a whole other sort of racket when it's actually pissed off and going for your ankles.

Roosters will also crow (or make a chirp-like sound) as a means of calling hens to a food source. Roosters' primary duty is to find food for hens.
