- I am being completely bombarded with Garfield marketing at the moment. And I suspect so are you. Something about the Chris Pratt Garfield formula has social media managers running rampant - it's even reached our cheese! But Garfield as a brand has been quite a tumultuous IP, that isn't new to the big screen either. And with the movie coming out in just a few more days, let's contribute to some of the marketing ourselves by looking through the weird experiences this cat has gone through. Learning about the history of Garfield. Because after everything, I've been thinking to myself: How Did The Garfield Franchise End Up Here...

...And here I thought the train climax in the Garfield movie was actually GOOD as a kid...
Have YOU seen much Garfield marketing? Here in the UK there's a lot less... invasive stuff. But it is in our cheese...
I’m seeing The Garfield Movie this Friday with my Garfield plushies & my friend too.🧡😻
I saw a few posters like a week before the release of the film but that was about it
I saw posters of it on top of the taxi's when I was on my vacation in New York.
Chris Pratt is the antagonist in this movie? That’s what you said at the top
Olive garden collab
It's almost hard to believe that modern Garfield is the same character as the one from the 1980s TV specials, especially the Christmas one. Those are so charming.
It's the same IP. But they're different canons. Like all the different batmans. Same character, but different takes and portrayals on the character.
@joeybaseball7352 I get that, but modern Garfield feels way more removed from its origin than other IPs, probably because he was never intended to be anything more than a 2-dimensional comic strip character that sold a ton of merchandise. I don't think trying to make him a more fleshed out character works for Garfield, because he was never meant to be on the same level as something like Peanuts or Calvin and Hobbes.
@@CinnamonGrrlErin1It really does. That is not Garfield.
@@CinnamonGrrlErin1 I like the Adam West Batman. Sure it's more campy than the Kevin Conroy Batman. But still fun nonetheless.
Nobody can replace Lorenzo Music as Garfield. He really brought Garfield’s snarky voice and catty demeanor to life in both the show and the television specials.
I agree. But unfortunately Lorenzo Music passed away 23 years ago. So there's no choice but to replace Garfield. Now I could understand getting up in arms if Lorenzo Music was still alive, and well to do voice Garfield, and they passed him up, to get a big name celebrity like Bill Murray or Chris Pratt to do the voice instead. That would be messed up. Like having Harry Styles voicing Spongebob, instead of Tom Kenny.
I'd argue that Frank Welker had the truest voice as he was more in character and sounded the most like garfield would sound. It's done like Lorenzo's in great honor and he has done all the shows since 2007, 17 years. Just like Lorenzo, 20 years. Both great legends. Chris Pratt can eat demolished house dust, he's not Garfield
@@slothy387pooh6 Welker's Garfield was always off. He was doing a bad Lorenzo Music impression. I would rather they do something new with the voice, than try to copy Lorenzo Music's iconic voice. He was a legend. Nobody can do him. So don't try. The Garfield Movie was great, so it worked.
@@joeybaseball7352 lol okay, to each their own.
@@joeybaseball7352 you're probably over 35 years old, mostly likely biased from that part. To each their own but to say Frank Welker was off is an insult to his work. You didn't watch the shows since 2007💀 and hold your heart dear to a man with a low voice and crappy audio for the times. Sorry, I prefer for my garfield to actually have character and move his lips so he can reciprocate breaking the fourth wall better. No one is copying Lorenzo's old voice. He simply did better and will always be the true garfield as he had the best mannerisms and attitude for it. He gave what garfield needed, an audience to all but true to the origins. Be mad
The 2010’s Garfield tv show was a vibe
I have such nostalgia for Garfield’s Pet Force
Oh yeah, the Shrek before Shrek.
My favorite Garfield movie bit is the first live action film’s dvd menu song. It’s a horrible attempt at a spanish cumbia with one single line of “me gusta corar lasagna”. I once sat in bed with a fever watching the dvd menu on repeat for several hours as a kid. And 20 years on i remember every single note, instrument, harmony, even the extract lenth of the pause between loops
Literally just watched the film today cause my local Cinema was doing a £4 deal, and i quite enjoyed the film even though i thought the pacing was kinda bad
I just [OBTAINED FOR LEGAL MEANS]-ed it, but aside from pacing, Garf jr and senior we're insufferable to listen to bicker, the plot seemed WAAYY to convoluted and big for a movie about a lazy obese cat, and even with maybe a few oke and even heartwarming scenes (im talking about the tree scene. I liked the tree scene) its not enough to save an already mediocre comedy. 6/10, not enough Jon.
@@CejaStudiosOdie was great, though.
@@jackislegitterrified3689 But then I WOULD be Captain Obvious (Odie was amazing)

The Bull was hit or miss
@@jackislegitterrified3689the BULL WAS BAD ASS 🐂🐂🐂😤😤😤
I just saw it at the “lazy Sunday” event by AMC theaters today. It was simple to say in the least…
the garfield gets real trilogy was introduction to garfield so i kinda have a soft spot for those direct to dvd films even if there far from perfect
I hear the 3d tv show version of Garfield whenever I read Garfield. A generational thing surely.
I always think of Garfield & Friends whenever I’m reminded of Garfield 😭 that show was my childhood
this movie actually looks pretty good, cant wait to see it
So much that I got an ad for the movie the moment I clicked on this video.
I remember watching Garfield and friends on Toon Disney and the 2000’s computer animated Garfield productions on Cartoon Network.
Here in Netherlands, the movie already released 2 weeks ago lol
Good for them
It also had a pre-release in the UK from last Friday to Today (Sunday)
How are the reviews?
Same here in Denmark.
There's also The Garfield Show.
Ok, but the lounge chair is goated! 😂
i’m in america and i went to olive garden the other day, quite literally everywhere i looked there was just GARFIELD.
What about the 3-D Garfield show? It might only be on Netflix but it’s a thing.
Peak childhood

best Garfield show with a banger theme song, 10/10
I unironically love bill Murray’s Garfield. Especially the first one. I used to rent them from blockbuster every time. They are unhinged and so authentically 2000s. But also the story telling is great and bill Murray is a perfect voice for Garfield
Bill Murray will disagree, he really made alot of jokes after about how much he really hated it and I'm sure it's been around to him talking about it.
3:37 that thing still freaks me out with the body horror just thinking about it...
Freaken freaked me the heck out as a kid.
It's so surreal hearing people talk about the Garfield Mania of the late 80s and early 90s like it's a historic thing, even though I lived through it. Getting old is surreal guys.
I just got a garfield tyco telephone today this is such a coincidence
I can't believe you didn't even mention the years of fan-made content like John without Garfield comic strips, and hundreds of works of art of gore-field.
Because they're fan made. Should we mention all the star wars fan fiction when discussing star wars? There's already so much actual star wars.
@@joeybaseball7352 Star wars hasn't had such a large gap in content in decades. Whereas Garfield had a decades lack of content.
There was some fan-made stuff in that amount of time worth alluding to.
@@archysimpson2273what long gap? Garfield has released a comic strip in the newspaper every single day for 50 years. Star Wars went 20 years between episodes 6 and 1.
A single 3 or 4 panel strip is an acceptable dose of Garfield; anything more is too much.
A Tale of Two Kitties was ORIGINALLY going to involve Garfield going to US Acres (Garfield's sister IP with the talking farm animals that was the middle segment in Garfield and Friends), however at the time of the 2nd movie's conception Howard Morris (Wade's VA) was dying of heart failure and Thom Huge (Roy's VA) had completely retired shortly after Lorenzo Music's death in 2001. Hence why they took the "Garfield hangs out with an eclectic bunch of farm animals" plot element and instead reworked it into the final plotline of Garfield getting switched with a noble cat whose estate has a farm on it.
I can understand why the filmmakers decided to do what they did in the mid-2000s, but...now it's 2024, the still-alive-and-working Frank Welker who replaced Music as Garfield in turn got replaced with Chris Pratt for this movie, and from what I've heard from people who've seen this movie US Acres' entire existence is ignored in it, even though 1) one of the plot elements is literally GARFIELD GOING TO A FARM, 2) it's been nearly 20 years since Morris died, so giving Wade a new VA (and giving Roy a new VA as well, since Huge is still retired) wouldn't be as offensive as it would've been in 2004, and 3) again, FRANK WELKER IS STILL ALIVE AND WORKING AND GARFIELD GOT RECAST WITH CHRIS PRATT FOR THIS MOVIE ANYWAY.
I'm sorry, I'm a US Acres fan who's just a tiny bit sore that pretty much every opportunity to have US Acres included in a major Garfield adaptation this century has somehow fallen out of the possibility of happening every single time.
And it's honestly sad to see the IP fail to make the big-time over and over and OVER again, especially once you consider that Jim Davis created at least the original idea of US Acres (he worked with the most major artists at PAWS, Inc. to come up with at least the character designs) from a genuine desire to improve the world of comics and cartoons (in this case, so Jim's then school-aged son would be able to easily understand a comic in the newspaper) as opposed to his having created Garfield chiefly to make tons of money.
Oh nooo the character created to specifically be marketed and sold in many products is being marketed and sold heavily in various products. What are you some kind of Garfield purist? You can appreciate the brand and love the character, I do, but that’s what he is. A brand. That was the point of his creation. This movie is hardly the worst Garfield thing ever made.
The Garfield marketing has been pretty forward. Some of it pretty neat (like their mixed art posters) and I'm sure folks are tired of Pratt, but still. I'll be for sure checking out this film as some point.
Also: Garfield Pet Force was surprisingly enjoyable and nostalgic. (I had the comic)
Chris Pratt chair 0:45
I'm Canadian and have not seen much outside of two trailers. And of course, this is on brand for Garfield.
I got an add for the Garfield trailer on this video lol
Scott Beach only voiced Garfield once in 1980, for a TV Special celebrating comic strip characters, and hosted by Goldie Hawn. Lorenzo Music voiced Garfield from 1982 all the way until his passing in 2001, and his voice is considered by many to be the definitive Garfield voice. Frank Welker voiced the titular cat from Garfield Gets Real onward, and it’s odd that they didn’t just cast him for this new film as his voice was in many a feature length film before. The Bill Murray Garfield films are so bad they’re good for me. Bill Murray did great with what he was given to work with, but the writing still could’ve been better, mostly with the first one (it basically comes across as an elongated retelling of Here Comes Garfield). I think Chris Pratt might sound more like Garfield if the sound engineers had enough insight to lower the pitch of Chris’s voice recordings for it a semitone or two?
Thank you! When he said that, I just knew it was't quite right. Lorenzo Music is the iconic voice folks think of. I used to use a garfield alarm clock that said in Mr. Music's voice (loudly), "No, stay in bed. Sleep longer" when you hit the snooze button.
Edited to say instead of "wrong" to "not quite right" since he had the name of someone who did technically do the voice but not the main, iconic actor. Mistakes happen :)
They weren't trying to get Chris Pratt to sound like the Lorenzo Music Garfield. This is a completely different canon. There really is no Garfield canon. The comic strip version of Garfield, is different from the Lorenzo Music version, is different from the Bill Murray version, is different from the Frank Welker version, is different from the Chris Pratt version. Just like all the different batmans.
Lorenzo Music, you are much missed. ❤❤
I watched it yesterday. It is not a bad movie. The plot... yeah, that is maybe a little bit too predictable. But a lot of good action scenes and funny stuff and great animation. But on the other hand it is like with "The Fall Guy" movie: If you think about who Colt Seavers really is (in the original show) you ask yourself "What is this? This guy in the movie is not Colt Seavers. This movie is not 'The Fall Guy'.". To put it in different words: The Garfield in the new movie is not the Garfield from the strips or the first show. And this new version... It is like Sony tried to do a Pixar movie with Garfield in it.
This is actually the only place I've seen anything about this.
john i ate those foods
0:09 antagonist? He’s not playing the villain
I saw Garfield dypers at Wal-Mart
1:45 I grew up on that movie I want there when It first came out But I owned the dvd.
I watched The Garfield Movie in Theaters since May 11th (aka my Birthday) and it was awsome, funny, familyfriendly and emotional.
It is my Favorite Movie, not only of this year, but also my Favorite Movie of all time
The Garfield Movie had the most marketing since Barbie!
Can’t forget about the super Garfield kart racing games
I'm excited to see The Garfield Movie, mainly because I love the live-action Garfield movie with Bill Murray, and I love the holiday specials from the 80s animated show.
Knowing Mark Dindal (the director of the Emperor’s Groove) is directing this gives me hope. It’s his first movie in almost 20 years!
How the hell did I not hear this before? Was wondering if he was doing anything.
The “Cheese Tax” ad is what killed my interest in this film
I have to say that in my home country [ Norway] we got the movie may 8th
What did you think of it?
Mondays are the worst
I actually have the Garfield game on the DS.
I need a full video on the 3d garfield movies? I remember them so vividly from my childhood, but looking at them now, it looks like a ps2 cutscene 💀💀
I wasn't expecting it to be very good but it was actually really funny. The pacing is kinda bad at some parts but the rest of the movie is good enough to look past it's faults.
I want the next Garfield movie to be directed by Rojom and Lumpytouch.
You either get it or you don’t.
Chris Pratt is the main protagonist. Not antagonist
I heard F-Zero X's Silence theme!
I watched it and yea it was just meh? I guess that's the best thing I can think of what to say about it, just eh? There's one scene with the bull and the cow that was a bit much for a kids movie..
Bro I live in Bolivia and it dropped weeks ago.
Garfield is just about to make history. His marketing campaign is just nothing but give me now a lot of promotion of how the movie is almost here and it collapsed with every single apartment object that they had to make Garfield like a popcorn bucket A Garfield chair and pretty soon every single apartment object. He even tried to make fun of every studios with his parody posters out of every movie that is from 2024 but the most weirdest part is that Inside Out 2 and Sonic Movie 3 are the only survival movies that did not get parody by Garfield. This Chris Pratt fat lazy ass cat is about to make history with ALL of these things he did!
Based on the marketing, I’m going to take a wild guess and say that The Garfield Movie is either going to be an absolute masterpiece or one of the worst animated movies of all time.
I saw the RT scores and critics were not happy about it. Just need to wait patiently.
0:07 what?
YOU DIDNT TALK ABOUT THE FACT THE GARFIELD SHOW HAS THE BEST GARFIELD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
At this point Chris pratt is gonna be president of America.
