- I don't really have a lot of blind shoots with my roses, but it can be a problem for some gardeners. I am addressing different reasons why those shoots appear and ways to minimize them. Happy gardening!

I put my chin up and today I made myself positive feeling and painted my new Obelisk for rose. I am going to watch more of your video tonight. I live North of England and I found some people here doesn’t speak clear as you do, so to me your English is much more comfortable and love your tone of voice. It’s so warm and cozy. 🌹🌹🌹

Thank you so much, I have about 45 DA roses. My mom was a huge gardener and she passed away before I found how relaxing it is. So I read a lot and follow experts on TH-cam. I just bought Pilgrim DA climber, I hope it is like an old fashion yellow rose my mom had growing up the side of a garage. I just moved 2 climbers that we built a small fence to hide pool equipment, hiding much of the sun on them. Now in an sunny spot blooming.

I haven't yet encountered blind shoots myself on my roses but I'm sure to encounter it at some point. Thanks to Olga, I'll be more aware and better prepared to deal with them. Also, I just absolutely love your Lady of Shallot. She's an absolute star!🤩

Hi Olga, I really believe that roses thrive on good healthy soil. And they don't do well in hot climates unfortunately.
Thanks for the info. I'm not an expert of roses I'm learning everyday about my roses , I'm glad I did the right things to the blind shoots last week. Funny I name, my blind shoots of roses before a male twigs which can't produce flowers.

My rose sent out a shoot that had no bud AND it was very thick and straight. I cut if off already but was wondering if there was a certain condition that caused this. The rose is looking great
There can be 2 causes is this situation. Your rose is a climber and wants to create strong canes with no visible buds on them, which is totally normal. Or... the root system on your grafted rose wants to take over and grow its own stems. Do your research and see what is the culprit. The second case is not good, you should fight those root canes from taking over your rose.

I really enjoyed your pros and cons of David Austin roses video, and I definitely understand now, how they can steal your heart. Lol You make it so easy for me to understand the nature and fickleness of roses. I didn’t realize roses sent out blind shoots so I will be looking through mine as they grow for any. And your garden by the way is so beautiful, especially your happy gardener and your lady of shallot. I just purchased recently a lady of shallot, Charles Darwin, the pilgrim, and an earth angel. I have them planted in 14” square plastic pots at the moment. (they arrived as 18 month old roses) and my plan is to put each one in a half wine barrel. Should I up pot them over time into something that size or can I do that while they are young? I want to start training the climber up an obelisk. ( I live in Michigan zone 5b so I’m going to move my girls into the garage this winter I think. )
Hi Courtney, I would upgrade pots several times with the growth of your roses. So, start with something which can accommodate your rose for that growth time. And then move it to a bigger pot when needed. Thank you for watching my channel! Garden hugs your way!
Gosh that color this year! Beautiful! Mine are budded up and about to pop. Sad though because I'm getting very few buds, and I already know that I put it in a spot with too much shade.
Is your rose young? Mine is an "old lady", I am loosing track of how many years. Plus you can always move your rose in the fall. It looks like I can't avoid moving my Brother Gadfael this year. Happy gardening!
@@OlgaCarmody Yes, I put two bareroot LoS on either side of an arbor in early spring. We will see how they do. Maybe it is normal to only get a few buds with the first canes?

You’re roses are beautiful ♥️ Mine are out & looking so pretty , it’s amazing how in just a few days they can pop out & look so pretty.. I have 12 rose bushes , but my white one is getting chewed up by some kind of bug .. I had to chop it way back & sprayed it with neem oil .. I hope it comes back out . Plus , some thing is chewing up my hydrangeas bushes & that’s never happened.. makes me so sad & mad too cause I spend to much time & money on them , for them little bugs to just eat them up .. 😢
Any suggestions of what it could be & how to get rid of it ??

It looks like many questions are about soft body insects. Will definitely do a video about them. I have my battles with them too.

Yes, I have 2 mature shrubs growing into each other there.
Hello Olga. I was just looking into blind shoots a few weeks ago. I had never heard of them! I’m a new rose gardener and have done planted last spring and this spring. I imagine that I should let this spring’s bareroot roses alone and let them settle in? As for bareroot roses planted last spring, should I start trimming back blind shoots this year? I think I have checked all your boxes to do, but maybe they are just young. What do you think?
I feed my roses Rose Tone also. Beginning in spring and once a month. Probably not as much as first feeding. I also give fish fertilizer weekly. I think they are doing fairly well but I don’t like the bugs eating them! Maybe you can do a little video on what to do with all these little critters? I will use the dormant oil next time as you suggested. I have used beneficial nematodes in my yard which did reduce Japanese beetles last year… hoping for good results this year too. The aphids and sawfly larvae are driving me crazy. I’m outside two times daily removing them by hand.

Oh, my, you are busy in your yard this season! I am sure you are so much happier to be there. But soft body insects are a true nightmare. I have my share too. Will do video about those pests and show my battles with them. Enjoy your day!
I didn’t feed my roses in spring, is it too late to do it now? Or shall I wait until the first flush of roses are over? Many thanks x
It is not too late, feed your roses and let them thrive! Not too late rule can't be applied to feeding your roses in the fall.
My roses are so behind! They are just showing signs of life & bc i have a short growing season I am worried I will not have any blooms 😔 Olga, is there any hope? How fast do roses go from just leafing out (they died back to soil but are growing leafs now) to fully blooming? Thank you for another informative video
Krista, there are a lot of things going on in your message. You have a short season, so, 4-5 I assume... Since you live in a cold zone, your roses need winter protection, otherwise they will loose all canes above ground to freezing winds and temp. I assume again that you don't protect your roses, and they freeze all the way to the ground. In cold zones roses can't do that, they can't afford to loose all the canes and perform well. Your roses are running out of time, since they face a monumental task of rebuilding their canopy ... and.. producing wonderful blooms. If rose has to choose between leaves or blooms, rose will choose leaves for survival. Hence no blooms for you. My suggestion will be: protect your rose, cover all the canes with soil or some sort of contraption you can build, before really cold weather settles in... Hope it helps. This way your rose will be coming into spring with live canes and can focus on producing blooms for you.
@@OlgaCarmody - thank you for the reply. My zone is 4, but some times 3!! (Rarely 3, and with climate changing it is 4-4b) I did protect the roses very well. One was a Minnesota tip, the others were well protected with a mound of soil over the crown, I made a wire wrap & filled it with dry leaves, then wrapped my entire contraption in frost cloth to stop leaves from blowing around & to provide extra protection. The canes died back to 3-4”. Our first killing frost is usually late October, if that helps. (But again that varies so it could be Sept or November. Mother Nature is moody!!)

Mam i can't see 7 seven leaves pattern on your generous gardner, mine giving 7 leaves and very long shoot from soil and its growing fast and having lot of thrones, should i wait to see it blooms or not, or simply cut it, if not blooming.?? Plz help🙏🙏😷
Your GG is a climber. It has to have long shoots. Please don't cut them down to the ground. Climbers usually produce long canes first year and next year they start blooming on those canes. Do the research on difference between shrubs and climbers. Thanks.

Olga! I just planted a Floribunda that has no buds, as compared to the other roses that I planted at the same time. Should I be concerned??
As long as she is healthy, she should be fine. Some roses take their long "thinking" time to decide to grow. I have 2 like that in my garden. If there is something going on with bugs or roots, you would be able to see it, your rose will look unhappy and there will be problems with leaves. And of course, no shade, right? Happy gardening!

Olga!!! Thanks for the response. Yeah, I watched that video. You have that one in the shade that only bloomed once in two years! Yes, aside from the missing buds, the plant is so healthy and vibrant with plenty of sunlight.
I love your videos and hope my roses, although not David Austin, will go as beautifully. I was going to buy one or two, but every place is out of stock! BTW...since you're such an expert in David Austin, do you have a place you recommend for purchasing them? What do you think is a good price for them? Online or offline, although I live in Chicago- I know you live in the NE.
