I'm so happy with the way the rose is presented in the video. It's much better to see the whole plant and its habit in the ground rather than seeing close up shots of a potted plant. I hope you continue with this format!
Thanks, the trials are on-going, so we will be posting more of our findings as they unfold, and we get the time! As you can imagine, it takes a fair bit of effort and expense to undertake (and maintain) this approach, but we regard it as being a very important part of our quest to determine the BEST performing selections, which of course is something we are doing all the time. So stay tuned because there's more videos like this coming...... Have you subscribed to our channel? @@IwillBEme4U +1 . I couldn’t agree more. Until I watched your video I had no idea how a mature 4 year old David Austin rose would look on ground from a distance. Thanks again
Just think of all the Wisdom that came through the follicles to achieve, that Platinum hair, David!! 🙌 Thanks for sharing. Everybody loves David Austin Roses! 🌹

We can’t help ourselves when it comes to David Austin roses. One became 3 then 5 then… It can be very easy to become a DA rose hoarder. We planted Eustacia Vye last year and she is beautiful!
They are beautiful roses and it is hard to choose just one. Glad to hear your Eustacia Vye is performing so well. Thanks for letting us know. Presumably you have subscribed to our channel. Hi David. I love your enthusiasm and knowledge. I just bought my first David Austin rose this year - Olivia Rose Austin. I live in zone 5b near Chicago. But I was wondering if you had any experience growing Olivia Rose and what you think.
Yes, we grow and are fond of Olivia. It is a beautiful variety and like James L. Austin is named after an Austin family member, which is usually a good indication that the breeder thinks a lot of its qualities too. We find her to be a good performer, a bit slower to get established but once she settles in and gets going she puts on a terrific show. Stay tuned because at some point, David will almost certainly be profiling her qualities in his ongoing series on the top performing David Austin Varieties in our trials.

Hi David! Your enthusiasm and passion show that you are still young! Your advice is very insightful and your garden is stunningly beautiful! I live in climate zone 3🥶😊 and you can’t find such tabernacles of paradise here, but my 4 roses wintered for 2 years, ground cover and even floribunda. Of course, I cover them for the winter and under the snow they cope with our Ural frosts. Do you think any Austin roses can be so winter-hardy, for frosts of -30°? Probably just to admire videos like this... but I want to try, in the end, I might put the sleeping roses in the basement before warms up?
Thank you. Being out in the middle of garden with beautiful, interesting plants keeps the heart pumping and joints moving. Every day is a new experience, and sharing it with wildlife, family and friends makes it all so much more enjoyable. Your fortitude serves as a great example for the rest of us. As my father used to say, "when you go into a hospital, you'll usually find someone that is worse of than yourself" and hearing from you and your efforts, gives the rest of us a neat reminder that perhaps our conditions - are really not that bad after all. Thank you, for your appreciative comment and questions. We are delighted to hear you like this very nice David Austin variety. Here's a link to one of David's videos that will show you how to prune your bush roses: th-cam.com/video/D6cMQz5691A/w-d-xo.htmlsi=ninduKNJ9ztJP02h As you will see (and hear) we tend to be a bit more aggressive in our technique, which leads to more vigor and stronger renewal growth. I always enjoy watching your videos! You provide so much valuable information. I know we’re talking about some gorgeous roses, but what is that dark colored tree in the background in the first part of the video?
Thank you, that is very kind of you to say so. It is great to hear you are enjoying our efforts and that you are finding our content helpful. The tree in the background of this trial area is a purple leaved form of the European Beech (Fagus sylvatica) and this particular one is probably the 'Riversii' form We hope this helps and we are wondering if you have you subscribed to our channel? Its very simple, we just apply a dressing of a well-balanced, slow release fertilizer in early spring as we prune them. To maintain our independence we prefer not to detail specific brands, but if you talk to the experts at any our partnering garden centers: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/ they will be able to guide you with the ones, that in their experience produce the best results in your area. And to explain a bit more, about how we get good results from our roses, let us mention that first of all, choosing the right varieties is very important, and that's why we do extensive trialing and testing, and as you watch the videos here on this channel you will be able to see the ones that in our experience preform best in our (Northeastern and Mid-Atlantic) region. Also, an annual prune in early spring helps to keep them healthy and vigorous, and in this video (also on this channel), David takes you through the process and shows (near the end) how to apply the fertilizer. We hope this helps explain how you can get better results and more enjoyment from your roses. Have you subscribed to our channel? If you haven't, you might like to think about subscribing, because once you are subscribed, each time we post a new video (which we are doing all the time), it will turn up automatically in your feed. That’s where you will discover all sorts of beautiful, tried and true and cutting edge, top performing selections including the best performing David Austin selections for our region. .
I have one Eustacia Vye, it's only one year old and grows beautifully, the first flush was spetacular! The only shortcoming is, the bloom time is too short, mostly 4 days the flowers are spent.
Thank you, your impressions are great to hear about. Fortunately the floral period lasts longer with us (perhaps because we have older, larger and longer established plants), we find that it repeats well too.
Planted Eustacia Vye a few months ago bareroot and she is already covered in blooms, it is has beautiful form that is a pretty soft baby doll pink and of very healthy! She almost bloomed along with Olivia Rose Austin; which is always the easiest!

Thanks to Google, we were able to translate your message "When I watched your video, I wanted this rose... it's a pity that I don't know the names of the roses that grow next to Eustacia Vye, they are as beautiful as hers." And our answer is..... Stay tuned, because David will be featuring more of our top performers as our trial progress - also, when you get a chance check out some of the other videos here on this channel because that's where you will find other videos that he has already prepared and posted. I just bought Eustacia Vye and I appreciate your video on this beautiful rose. No buds yet but she is just starting to put on new growth. I hope that I get some blooms this year. What is your view on planting in pots and overwintering in pots inside an unheated garage? Should I plant it in ground in Fall or tuck it away in my garage overwinter?
Either way would be fine. Planted out means you get to see the full potential, less watering & no need to bring in and out, etc. On the other hand, having them in containers means you can enjoy it on decks, patios, balconies, etc. And move the plants around (if you want to). So, either way will work.
Depends upon the variety, the weather conditions (cold & cloudy versus hot & sunny), but for most varieties, from emerging bud to bloom shatter, you can expect to get maybe about a week or so for each bloom. Remember, they are mostly cluster & repeat flowering, so there's more shoots and buds coming all the time.
Do all of the roses in this trial garden have drip origami on under the mulch? About how much water does each rose get per day? Are these roses every overhead watered, and if yes, does it result in black spot? These videos are so important for those not familiar with roses, especially the David Austin roses.
We used drip irrigation the first year after planting to get them established. Since then, it has NOT been used. They are on their own, that's part of the trialing process, just like they would experience in a garden situation. The mulch helps, of course. Most get Blackspot & it is noticeable when they get stressed in Summer, and that's when we evaluate for susceptibility. Some get it badly and defoliate, and look ugly! Others have it, but not enough to disfigue and stop them from putting on a decent show. It is these ones that we are interested in discovering - the ones that have natural resistance and will survive and thrive without the need to spray. There's no overhead watering either. Elsewhere, we water them overhead in the nursery, and that's where we watch for Blackspot, Downey & powdery mildew, etc. Together, looking at vigor, repeat flowering, habit & flower performance, i.e. do they "self clean" (not "ball") - Meaning flowers not open fully in wet weather. All this comes together for us to find the best performers that go into our variety line up.
Such beautiful 🌹 roses. I have about 10 David Austin roses and I also have this particular one, and they are so beautiful. In my second year growing them and I’m hooked on them. I’m on Long Island NY, the northeast zone 7 a and they are prolific growers. I love your channel. Will you be having them for sale, distributing them? Mail order is very stressful because a lot of the varieties sell out so quickly.
Thanks, stay tuned because we will be featuring more of the best David AustinVars. And, check out our partnering garden centers on Long Island too, because the nice thing about buying them at these places is that because we mostly ship them in flower, you can see, smell and pick the ones that appeal to you most.
Thank you for that kind offer, but obviously the convenience of having our trial and test areas close to the nursery makes it easier to keep tabs on how all the plants are performing. Have you subscribed to our channel? If you haven't, you might like to think about subscribing, because once you are subscribed, each time we post a new video (which we are doing all the time), it will turn up automatically in your feed. Because that’s where you will discover all sorts of beautiful, tried and true and cutting edge, top performing selections.
We are not really set up to handle visitors but stay tuned and keep an eye out because there have been discussions that we (along with repressentatives from David Austin roses) might be hosting an event in years to come. If this comes to frutition, it will probably be announced on this channel. Meanwhile, we hope you can continue visiting us virtually via our videos.
Thanks for letting us know. It usually takes a few years for bare root roses to settle in and become established. That's why we like to encourage everyone to buy nice, big strong, well-established pot grown ones at our partnering garden centers: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/. Even then, it is important to plant them properly: th-cam.com/video/BUAc7Ggyoxw/w-d-xo.htmlsi=K53ZQmAdp09h1-oJ and especially water them frequently until they get their roots out into the surrounding soil. Thanks for watching and posting your question. Most of the roses in our David Austin trial area (including Eustacia Vye) are now in their fourth growing season. As as you've perhaps picked up, we have 4 areas with the same varieties replicated in each bed. Two areas are sprayed with a systemic fungicide (twice in the early part of the growing season) and two are left unsprayed, and pretty much left to their own devices! The idea is to determine which varieties perform best in our Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern USA region, and which ones will put on a good show in average home garden conditions even if they are not sprayed, irrigated or molly cuddled in nay way. The ones that David is (and will be), featuring here on our channel are the ones that have performed best in this trial. We hope this helps. Have you subscribed to our channel yet? @@OverdevestNurseries thank you so much for your detailed response dear sir. I’m your already your subscriber and a fan of yours. You are doing an amazing job and I sincerely hope David Austin greatly appreciates you because you are the window for us here in the US. I’m not in your area but very interested in your channel. Thanks for inspiring us. You do an amazing job !
Thanks for your question. Each of these plants are just one plant, and what's more some of them are vigorous enough to be on their own roots (not budded onto a rootstock). That's another part of our trials, testing them out to see which ones will grow and prosper without the added vigor of a rootstock variety. Budding roses is the traditional method of producing bare root roses in nurseries, but since all our plants are pot grown and we like to produce extra bushy, well shaped plants, growing them on their own roots is something we are investigating. So, stay tuned because David will be featuring more of our findings. Also, have you considered subscribing to our channel? Either would be fine We are doing more & more work on "own root - and part of our David Autin trials is comparing how they do as "own root" varieties. Own root means no possibility of rootstock suckers & bushier plants that can be trimmed more frequently - which is why we like own root, but some vars. may not be vigorous enough, which is why we are doing our trials. Budded plants have the vigor of the rootstock, which is partly why they are done this way too.
Our nursery is in Zone 7 (Southern New Jersey), here's a link that will let you see about our operation: grownbyoverdevest.com/ It is an open, flat site and at times feels more like a cold Zone 6. FYI, we send our plants to hundreds of partnering garden centers throughout our Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern USA region: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/ which means that this takes in Zone 5 (and perhaps almost Zone 4 too). Glad to see the new Austin introductions are holding up their flowers with stronger stems. You say hardy to one 4; is that cane or crown hardy?? Because there is a difference. In my experience, David Austin roses are not cane hardy to zones 4/5 (-32 C/-25 F) and require winter protection no less than a hybrid tea or floribunda. They also need to be grafted on the appropriate understock to survive frozen soil. Exactly how much winter kill this 'Eustacia Vye' will suffer needs to be established. Even the Parfuma and Fairytale series roses from Kordes suffer substantial cane kill to the point that the damage is pruned off almost to ground level come spring. David Austin roses are simply gorgeous, but they are not 100% cane hardy compared to certain North American species roses, rugosa hybrids and once-bloomers such as Albas, gallicas, damasks and a few recurrent portlands such as the 'Duchess of Portland'. David Austin roses are truly cane hardy to zones 6/7. Having said that, a hard pruning in spring will nonetheless encourage a nice shrubby plant and large flowers to as much as a short growing season will permit. As a general rule, continuous bloom depends on continuous growth while cane hardiness and resistance to low temperatures depends on cessation of growth. Most recurrent and continuous blooming roses aren't programmed to shut down for winter so suffer winter kill as a result. There are a few exceptions to this rule however; roses such as rugosas, rosa palustris and a few Asian species carry the repeat blooming gene whilst exhibiting 100% cane hardiness. It is with such roses that a new line of varieties must be developed from scratch if total cane hardiness is to yeild continuous bloom for cold climates and northern areas. 🌹
Thanks, for taking the time to respond. Our experience is limited to how they perform in our Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern region, and furthermore since our trial site is at our nursery in Southern New Jersey, we would mostly definitely defer to any knowledge about hardiness ratings beyond our region (which largely comes from our friends at David Austin Roses and their trial sites located elsewhere.

Thank you, that is very kind of you to say so. It is great to hear you are enjoying our efforts and that you are finding our content helpful.
The tree in the background of this trial area is a purple leaved form of the European Beech (Fagus sylvatica) and this particular one is probably the 'Riversii' form

How do you fertilize your roses? So many buds!

@@OverdevestNurseries I wish but I live in Canada. Crocus rose is gorgeous! Thank you.

Hi David, do you mind sharing how many days one flower can last?
I already shop at a few of your partnering garden centers, you have such beautiful plants 🥳 I will definitely be on the hunt for your DA 🌹
You can use my yard for a test garden any time you like.
Thank you for that kind offer, but obviously the convenience of having our trial and test areas close to the nursery makes it easier to keep tabs on how all the plants are performing.

Hi David, is it possible to visit your trail garden ?
We are not really set up to handle visitors but stay tuned and keep an eye out because there have been discussions that we (along with repressentatives from David Austin roses) might be hosting an event in years to come.
If this comes to frutition, it will probably be announced on this channel.
Meanwhile, we hope you can continue visiting us virtually via our videos.
@@OverdevestNurseries Thank you ! Will wait for that.
I had just 3 flowers but she was bareroot in winter .
With plenty of TLC, you should be able to see it grow and prosper, and eventually show off all the beautiful attributes that David mentions in our video.

Hello, how old is your eustacua vye?

Are these roses planted in threes? or is it just one plant?
Thanks for your question.
Each of these plants are just one plant, and what's more some of them are vigorous enough to be on their own roots (not budded onto a rootstock).
That's another part of our trials, testing them out to see which ones will grow and prosper without the added vigor of a rootstock variety. Budding roses is the traditional method of producing bare root roses in nurseries, but since all our plants are pot grown and we like to produce extra bushy, well shaped plants, growing them on their own roots is something we are investigating.
So, stay tuned because David will be featuring more of our findings.

@@OverdevestNurseries Already subscribed! Is this rose Eustacia Vye own root or grafted? Thank you1
Hi David, Do you recommend own root or grafted roses for New Jersey zone 7A?
Either would be fine
We are doing more & more work on "own root - and part of our David Autin trials is comparing how they do as "own root" varieties. Own root means no possibility of rootstock suckers & bushier plants that can be trimmed more frequently - which is why we like own root, but some vars. may not be vigorous enough, which is why we are doing our trials. Budded plants have the vigor of the rootstock, which is partly why they are done this way too.
What zone are you?
Our nursery is in Zone 7 (Southern New Jersey), here's a link that will let you see about our operation: grownbyoverdevest.com/
It is an open, flat site and at times feels more like a cold Zone 6.
