      Thanks Jamie, I was using this method back in the 90's. I think I can safely say I was the first to use a car as a Muller

    Ah, the Mazda muller! I'm interested in your recipe for Kbond sand. That would make a great video.

      G'Day Mark, I'll do the large body casting in green sand and the small cover plate in the KBond sand. Hopfully it will show up the difference in surface finish between the two castings. I'll re-mull the KBond sand when finished which usually only entails adding the isopropyl alcohol. see the link to the recipe from the Kent State University -

    Excellent video Cam. I've just made a small Coffee Can furnace to learn the basics. Have just started looking at Green Sand and this videos a great help. Once I get my head around the basics I'll build a bigger furnace and started some projects I've been want to do for a long time. Regards Kevin

      G'Day Kevin, yep start small (I did) and build up to larger volumes as your confidence grows. Start with aluminium and then move onto bronze and if it takes your fancy have a crack at cast iron. Casting at home adds a different angle to the shop and certainly opens up a whole range of different projects you can tackle.

    I used the exact same technique when I laid road base under my pavers. Back and forward with the Navara, the 245 wide tyres did a good job.
    Cheers

      @camatbattler2233  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      G'Day Raymond, did you need to put some protection between the road base and your tires to stop it from sticking? I certainly need the plastic to stop a buid-up of sand on the wheels.

      @@camatbattler2233 no it was proper road base from a pug mill and came together quite well, compacted well with the weight of the Nissan. Sometimes you just need to think outside the box. Interested to see your smelting and casting, I’m in the process of building a furnace to cast ally into useable stock.
      Cheers

    That is cool, thanks for the tip on mulling - I've not cast anything since high school but it's something I want to do again at some point. And I laughed hearing your wife, mine certainly puts up with a lot, lol . . . It takes a special kind of girl to be a hobbyist's wife . . .

    And that is why I built my sand muller, lol. I used to do it by hand/feet when I first got started, but dealing with the tarp taking off for other stuff, and the clay and sand drying out my hands and feet and constantly making them crack and sore for days after, I finally just made the muller and it really made a massive difference also. Another big thing was that it would take days to fully get the moisture through the sand absorbed evenly, and if I were trying to do any casting in colder weather, it was impossible. With the muller tho, I could mull up a batch of sand and be ready to make the mold within 10-15 mins, and it allowed me alot more time to do castings if I had gotten one or two nice days.

      G'Day Chirpy, yep the Muller is certainly the way to go but when starting out and only needing a small quantity this makes it so much easier if you don't have a muller. My big Paddle Muller that I used for the Cast Iron Sand was so much better than the other wheel mullers and could knock the silo of sand (around a Tonne) out in less than 1/2 hour. It was very power hungry though and had numerous upgrades with larger motors being added and rebuilding of the structure to match the upgraded power to reach that efficiency.

    Very good approach... I hope you did not get into to much trouble off camera with the wife...

      Hi Paul, yes it's a method I used back in the 90's. I can safely say I was the fist to use a car as a Muller. The car did get cleaned out but it wasn't easy getting the stuff out of the carpet.

      G'Day Yves, fortunately the clay stuck only to the insert mats so I took them out and hosed them down so it was an easy fix in the end. When the green sand is mixed it will stick to everything. Yep everyone is traveling well on the family front, got all the kids and their partners coming over for Easter Sunday.
