@@dreamfire9661 I'm sure some of them can be, but you can definitely tell it's not the norm to beat your kids here or "abuse" them in any way. In America and Europe there are laws that protect children from that kind of thing, you touch a hair on a child's head and social services or CPS will be called so quickly, whereas Asians-well in my experience Chinese parents anyway, they whoop you and it's just part of the culture, part of raising you to be 'proper', our parents will just say "it's for your own good / it's bc we care". A very large percentage of us were raised that way and it's not really weird to most of us. Whereas here you know it's very unheard of bc if it happens, the person is very traumatized by it and it's an extremely huge deal, and they will either be very reluctant to talk about it, or some of them will make it their whole personality (that they were abused as kids/had a fked up childhood) just to come off as unique or edgy. It also causes fractures in their family. They will move away from their parents and cut off contact because they wonder how they could harm them as kids in such a horrible hateful way. They'll think their parents were horrible people too. Being Chinese, like yes it's still "emotional and mental damage" lol, but like it's almost no different from like falling off a swing when you were a kid. You kind of just unconsciously accept it as normal, and yeah you joke about it like that.
Pro Tip: If you're child did something wrong, after you come home from work, say absolutely nothing. The pure amount of guilt and pressure will lead to your failure just telling you what you did wrong. And then you can throw the slipper.
As someone who is still not an adult, but also not asian, this is very validating. Thank you Steven: your course on emotional damage has helped me heal some of my own lol
This is my daily life with one parent being Asian and the other mexican, its has its pros and cons, its just that the cons out way the pros but a planet
The family dinner scene really hit home. As a full-time Asian, whenever we had a family dinner w/ friends of my parents, they made me do Taekwondo in front of them. At one point I fell and they told me my black belt was fake and I should lose 10 pounds 💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀
Even more advanced emotional damage technique: When you get home and the child hasn't done what s/he is supposed to, just sigh and shake your head. The child will freak out on their own from their already massive guilt complex.
Great lesson! You know it "sticks" when you are a rich Nobel Prize winning, Olympic running, Astronaut and still one day your brain randomly brings up the Emotional Damage and your friend finds you in the fetal position under the fitted sheet of your bed. Parent job well done. Love your vids!
The counter solution/attack to this weapon is "NOT GIVING A SHIT" and directly but politely saying "NO" at first and sticking aggssively to it. It's effective if you can establish your worth or prove that you are more knowledgeable than them most of the time, at most of the things.

Also, day camp for orchestra! I have so much emotional damage... I did not mention sports and clubs either. ...I guess my parents were successful.
Literally my exact same story, but with piano. My parents made me take the Suzuki method starting at age 4. So. Much. Emotional. Damage. I was so terrified of my teacher that I’d fake getting nosebleeds during lessons just so I could take refuge in the bathroom for a few precious minutes. 🙃

Don't know if to laugh or cry. Poor kids. Saw this at a provincial music festival my son was in. He was in the top 8. He was the only non Asian there. So, the first girl went up, trying so hard, she was literally crying on stage. She sounded beautiful but I don't think her mother was happy because she didn't win. My son didn't win either but I'm very proud of him. He was blown away by how good everyone was. Sounded incredible. And the day before we were in a hotel room before the concert, I really thought that one girl was playing her violin for at least 5 hours straight practicing.
The worst feeling is when you start playing your instrument in front of your guests, and they start yawning/looking confused, and your parents give you "The look" Even more emotional damage when they say,"play something your (the guest) understands!"

My Mom used to do the "play music for our guests" trick on us all the time. But we weren't Asian. Then recently, she got a DNA test and found out she has a Chinese gene. Asian level unlocked!
I love how we progressively see the improvements to Steven’s living situations with each upload. Man’s got a hallway now, -sniff- he making it.

When my white friends don't get Asians, I just direct them to your channel. Everything you have shared is the most accurate summation of the Asian experience and identity in a concise short video nutshell
To be honest I’m a Asian and it isn’t really like this, but it’s so funny it’s accurate
@@NotSoNSC I think that means you're lucky lmfaoo
Im half Asian, but my father was white and he got full custody. Somehow I still got the full asian experience, the frozen chicken, the music example happened after I learned a second instrument,
But white parents are also very strict and can cause emotional damage
4:15 that smile...devilish and sincere...only a true proud failure management father could have this expression on his face xD

Worse is music lessons with a relative as your teacher. They report EVERYTHING to your parents!
Pro Tip: If you're child did something wrong, after you come home from work, say absolutely nothing. The pure amount of guilt and pressure will lead to your failure just telling you what you did wrong.
And then you can throw the slipper.
Wow that’s an advanced technique
Only professionals can pull this off.

Oh my God 🤣 I’m so sorry for laughing at this as hard as I did. That’s severe emotional damage for sure. That’s really terrible. I’m sorry 😢

Even more advanced emotional damage technique: When you get home and the child hasn't done what s/he is supposed to, just sigh and shake your head. The child will freak out on their own from their already massive guilt complex.

I think everyone can relate with "Because I said so". The ultimate parent weapon.
The counter solution/attack to this weapon is "NOT GIVING A SHIT" and directly but politely saying "NO" at first and sticking aggssively to it. It's effective if you can establish your worth or prove that you are more knowledgeable than them most of the time, at most of the things.

As a professional half-Asian I can confirm that playing all the instruments is a requirement, I have and still play cello, violin, piano, guitar and trumpet. I will also force this upon my child or children.
As an Indian, i find this so relatable, everytime i see your videos, i am able to connect,. Like the family dinner or "cause i want you " by asian parents. So relatable, very happy to see someone from Asia going this big. Respect from India💕💕💕🙌🙌
I have heard how Indian parents can really pile on the pressure and guilt when they think it's time for their kid to get married. Can you confirm? Do you know someone else who can?
I lost it at the thawing the chicken part. I think we’ve all been there. The guitar and singing brought tears to my eyes I was laughing so hard 🤣🤣🤣 well done Steven! We love the Failure Management content. 💙
Make Failure Management a company, it’s for good Asian parenting for money, it makes the failures (those things you call children) doctors thanks to the good parenting
I like how Steven's father had already bought Steven a guitar (Behind the blue chair in Steven's room) in addition to signing him up for lessons. What a good father!
yeah that was a true story with piano.
That's how they get you. "I spent all this money to buy expensive instrument, why do you let it gather dust? Don't waste money"
The worst feeling is when you start playing your instrument in front of your guests, and they start yawning/looking confused, and your parents give you "The look"
Even more emotional damage when they say,"play something your (the guest) understands!"
