    Here's a list :
Job description - Companies can list a job description with what you'll be doing everyday, and then completely change it when you get the job.
    -
Job title - Companies can promise a title, and never give it to you.
    -
Pay - Companies can promise a raise and never give it to you.
    -
Promotion - Companies can promise a promotion and never give it to you
    -
Unlimited PTO; we all know this a joke so they don't have to pay you the vacation you've accrued when you quit.
    -
Companies can promise regular vacation but only a certain amount of people can use it at once. 'It needs to be approved'.
    -
Companies can promise you a mentor and never give you one.
    -
Companies can promise you a office budget and never give you it.
    -
Companies that have pension can eliminate it at any time.
    -
Flexible schedule - this is interpreted as a 'come in earlier, leave earlier' but what that really means is 'we don't put a schedule on our work, so we can ask that you work any time'
    -
Perks - They offer perks video games, pool, etc - if you use them they're a dead giveaway that you aren't working as hard others.
    -
Remote work - Companies can tell you that you'll work remote and never let you, and they can do the opposite of that too. They can let you remote, and remove it.
    -
Team get together - They are not optional. Even if they say they are.
    -
Lunch - Ours was taken away when someone quit without notice. A childish thing to do.
    -
1 Off Jobs - Companies can post jobs that look like regular, continuing jobs, when in reality they only have on task they want you to complete, and then they will let you go.

Oh I just saw this! Add 2 more here from me!
1: HEALTHCARE BENEFITS. They can say that "upon commencement of employment" is when you get them and not actually deliver it. True story -- I had to wait MONTHS in spite of this in the contract.
2: "TEMPORARY LOWER SALARY TO PROVE YOURSELF. THEN WE WILL DO A SALARY REVIEW IN 3 MONTHS AND GET YOU UP. -- Never did the review and laid me off a bit after I poked harder about it. Hired for far less than I wanted to be hired for and got utterly wrecked by this bull for almost a year until they laid me off.

Two big take-aways from all of Josh's corporate exposed videos:
1: Work a job to save up a nest egg so that you do not have to work a corporate job anymore. Save enough money so that you can turn your side-gig into your main gig.
2: You will not get promoted from within. The biggest salary increases you will have as an employee will be by taking higher positions at different companies. Always keep your resume up to date and focus on improving your skills as well as working and developing passion projects.
The ultimate goal is to win the rat race by not playing it. Your goal is to escape and build up enough money so that you can freelance and actually have time to develop your business. ( After you lay the foundation of your side hustle while working, you should save up enough money so that you can live for 6 months to a year of bringing it up to speed.)
At least that's my goal, anyway.

I always love how companies perpetuate the myth that you're in control of your value when they ask, "So what kind of pay were you expecting for this position?" Look - both you and I know that you already have a budget of ~30% of whatever the company makes for labor. So why not just tell me straight up what you're willing to pay me instead of playing weird gross mind-games with someone that's trying to put food on the table and pay their rent?

The company is fine paying everyone else for that output and hired you in the expectation to match that output.
      1. You'll piss off your coworkers because management will immediately want the same output from them.
      2. You're running yourself into the ground needlessly like when they will not think twice to fire you if suddenly their isnt work bandwidth to justify your employment.
      3. Work to live. Fuck anyone who wants you to live to work. Life is too short.

They didn't tell me because they knew I didn't want to travel.

This is why people used to join trade unions back in the days, they provided employees with important leverage during conflict with company. Really, I don't understand this reluctance in IT industry to form trade unions as they are popular in other industries, especially in France or Germany. The problem you raise has always been present in capitalist economy as wage-earners have always been exploited no matter how skilled or educated they were.

This is key, workers are by definition atomized and have no leverage despite being the people who quite literally create all the value through labour. The only way to bargain and protect your collective interest is to come together and form unions. One difficult worker can be fired and replaced like nothing. All of them is a crisis. Solidarity strikes, even worse.
A good example is Sweden that has the only unionised Toys R Us workers in the world because all of their 170 employees went on strike. Toys R Us refused to sign the standard collective bargain because they had a worldwide no-negotiation policy with workers. This is a big mistake in a country that was in large parts built by union workers and social democrats. Their refusal sparked a solidarity strike where bank employees refused to handle their transactions, transport workers refused to deliver their goods and so on. Every sector is unionised which means there's no need for much labour laws, federal minimums etc. All of it is handled by yearly negotiations with industry representatives and union workers. Our entire model is built on this.

I dont see the point in making the whole process of getting a job so long and complicated in the US. I mean, I am from Germany and there are a lot of laws to protect employees here. So hiring someone can be a huge financial risk because it might very difficult for you to get rid of someone. But I always thought that you can just hire and fire someone in the US in one day. So if you hire the wrong guy it should be not so much of an investment to fire this guy and hire someone else. So whats the point in making this whole process so complicated?
Also I'm working as a kind of technical consultant for Salesforce consulting and development in Germany. In the last years I head a lot of customers. None of them wanted me to complete a code test or bullshit like that. Is this some special thing only kind of "Best Practices" in the US? I've never heard from practices like this in Germany even if the financial risk to hire someone is much higher here...
anyway! good videos! I especially enjoy your company chringe videos! Thanks for your efforts!

Good luck getting most of these questions answered. Exactly on point though. You should be interviewing the company as much as the company is interviewing you. Culture could suck so bad or OT etc... I even generally like my company but they are incrementally getting worse year over year in small bits. Just got told today that "we are a team" and not to clock out early at all if someone needs help. That's complete crap since we are on a system that judges our performance and the system discourages teamwork.

In my last job in Germany literally like 6 or 7 of those things that you described happened to me:
bullsh*tting about remote time and "the only thing that matters is the result" and then getting angry for taking it more than once a week, "mentor" who was always busy and literally had not a single one review of my job, low starting salary which was supposed to get better in time and... never did, because after completing the product, all of the sudden, some "new expense" for the company came out. Like literally 2 days before I completed the project. Granted, I moved to a whole new city for that job. So ok, Josh, we know the problem now. But the worst thing is - how would you know whether it's a lie beforehand? If they tell you it's ok to work remotely or that you will have a mentor, how can you assess whether it's really gonna happen before accepting the job offer (and possibly moving to a new city)? In other words, we know the problem - what's the solution? (other than quitting the job market altogether)

I hate not knowing a company's financials when working for them because you don't know how viable they are to continue and if you're going to be facing layoffs. Public companies can help with this since they need to post their earnings quarterly, and you can look those up online. (However, that requires being able to read the associated financial sheets and information on whether that company is a good company to work for). I haven't found a way to get financial information for smaller companies. I'll have to keep looking to get a general idea.

Mentor thing is my personal favorite. I've had so many jobs where I came in not knowing shit about anything - I'd made that fully clear before they hired me and they'd assure me that this wouldn't be a problem. Fast forward 2 weeks and everyone just gets mad for me not knowing what the fuck I'm supposed to do - turns out what I'm supposed to do is basically google every single thing I'm tasked to do and not dare bother anyone with my annoying nescience.
The IT sector especially is so horribly mismanaged across the board that it's actually hilarious. Everyone is just doing whatever the fuck they want and if you have a problem with that you can fuck right off because there's 20 people waiting in line to do your job at every single given moment. It's hilarious what these companies can get away with simply because there's so many 'resources' out there, willing to work under the stupidest conditions... just because it's the only way to pay the bills. If you don't have what it takes to be self-employed, tough luck, gotta suck that corporate dick. Either that or become a janitor or a cashier, there's really nothing in between anymore these days.

One of the best way to even get into your dream career is to attend a job fair. You get to talk to the recruiters directly and make an impact. I have gotten more interviews from job fairs than just a online application to the company. Also, I would completely recommend to go through a job placement consulting company. They tend to give training and then get you into your job of choice.

But then, they both quit and they never got replaced and I just got assigned all their tasks and I had to learn them all from scratch on the go because I never did any of that before.
