Why Your Slow Mo Video Isn't Cinematic

  • Slow motion, the most important camera spec. But companies are moving away from good slow mo, and into higher resolution instead. It's the wrong direction. Slow motion is so fun for street videography, wildlife, goofing around etc. Why are companies removing the slow motion specs they used to have?

I appreciate that you're pretty much the only TH-camr that is pushing super slowmo (1000 fps plus) to be integrated into mirrorless cams even if there would be caveats (ie. 1080P only and 2-3 second record time max with end trigger recording). I echo your sentiments. We need the camera companies to hear us out!

"The ultimate slow motion is photography" man says as he takes another puff, barely visible in a cloud of smoke. "Follow your subject at 1/20 of a second to capture motion and the eternity". Kasey pauses, taking another sip of fruit juice. "Wait, you mean in my quest for ultimate slow motion I end up at photography??". He gags, then gathers himself. "You're crazy."

120fps is actually pretty useful if you are filming events and stuff, you know when Casio used to do 1000fps in 2008, let that sink in, a bridgecam, with 1000fps mode, sure it was abysmal under 144p, but they still had it, you could shoot 600p with better quality, there were so many TH-cam channels back in 2008 - 2009 that used Casio to film all sorts of stuff, I used to think that was SUPER cool, I wanted one SO BADLY until I saw the price, holy goly those Yens were in the hundreds of thousands, no way a teenager back then could afford that! I would need to work 10 summers. But when I got my first 120fps camera, holy smokes, it was fun, too much fun actually, in a sense its like moving stills photography, you are freezing that super interesting moment in time. I actually wish that was like a mode in every camera, just a 540fps freeze frame, full sensor readout, for 5 seconds, all I could ever wish for, imagine how crazy that be! The RX10 and RX100 both does the 960fps and that was a ton of fun in itself.

I was at a festival filming something in a crowd and a guy next to me looked over and was like what's that thing you are holding??? and I was like it's a camera and he said oh I thought it was a vape. Normies don't even know what the pocket 3 is let alone know you are filming them with it.

Completely agree that slo-mo can create magic. Recently I dragged half a dozen short 1080p/240fps clips into Kdenlive of my dog jumping over logs and generally looning around in nature. Added a live track of Aurora / Nature Boy and BANG - magic. Everything just lined up like it was all made to go together.

I'm from France and I've discovered your channel a few days ago. You introduced me to the beauty and to the artistic merits of slo-mo. Some kind of a "best of both worlds" sweetspot between a frozen (and sometimes boring) picture and a normal speed video. It adds a nostalgic feel to those moments you've been able to capture and that are gone forever. You can capture time and images in this format. It's hard to describe and my English vocabulary is limited anyway. But this is something I will definitely take into consideration for my next camera.

I think Casey's onto something here. I mean street photography as a photographic genre has been around for decades but I don't know anybody else doing " street videography". The slow mo enhances this by giving the viewer the time to really absorb the content. Years from now it'll probably be commonplace, a respected artistic genre and Casey will be one of its pioneers 😁

People are okay telling every government agency and data fishing agency every detail of their life on social media, and sharing pics of their kids, details of the school and so on.. but an artist snapping a photo is an invasion of privacy ;) In Japan it's finally relaxing, but I've had people come up and tell me I am not allowed to take photos, even when I am just taking wide angles of the buildings and city. Some photographers carry cards detailing their rights as a photographer and present them in these situations. Some police in Japan also used to tell me no photos, now if I see them approaching me I start taking their photo and they walk away. They don't want any proof that they are in fact the ones breaking the rules.

    • @filmstudiojapan

@@collapsingruins Japan media have instilled paranoia about privacy for many years. In a weird way social media is finally breaking it downs as many youth want to be social media stars. Many private schools make students sign contracts that they will not be photographed or in videos. Ironically staste media often gets students in trouble filming crowd scenes for the news. I had two private female students that got in trouble at their regular private school because of that situation exactly. They had no way of knowing they were being recorded cause the news was filming from far away.. but somehow these girls were punished for just being in a public space. I love Japan, but their are allot of childish authority figures acting like they are wise and the media re-enforces it.

I understand that while desirable for some people that have a use case for this l, like you, most videographers wouldn’t go over 120 fps on a regular basis. I used 120 fps with my ZV-E1 and LUMIX G9II for similar genre to you, some lighthearted people watching, but I found that while all shots have been recorded in 100/120 fps I would only ever use the footage fully slowed down in less than 5% of scenes. I’m all for getting the most specs possible for my money but I understand why not everyone needs it as bad as you.
Going back to people watching I prefer the telephoto approach. Not only it will be more pleasing in many cases but it’s just easier to shoot without being close enough to get punched 😂
To ease people minds I usually frame the shot in such way that it’s not obvious they’re the intended subject. Just walk into my shot of something else and don’t apologise (it’s an English thing to apologise for everything 😂).

All weddings should be filmed at 480fps. That's a well known fact.

Sell some crap and get the freefly wave. 4k 420 and 2k 1400 with apsc sensor and e mount. 9400 at 1080. 2tb internal SSD. No damn AF though.

don't need autofocus if you understand hyperfocal distance which most people on mediocre tube have never hear about since they are children

I agree completely, the best way to appreciate the beauty and unlock the secrets of this world is through slow-mo. Advancements in flight are hidden everywhere in the insect world just waiting for us to discover

there is nothing there to discover, it has been know for a hundred years or more. Just because you are a sycophant doesn't mean that he is breaking any ground that hasn't already been broken. His paltry slow motion pales compared to a true high speed camera

guess the limits are caused by processing and battery power.
more performance more heat and needing bigger batteries.
writing speeds to memory cards might also play a role.
