Why Camcorders Are SO BAD Now?

  • Sony just released a camcorder, the Z200. Reminds me of how terrible camcorders are in compared to mirrorless cameras for video. Big, heavy, super expensive with a slow lens and mid range specs. You could buy a Canon R5 II for that money. You could buy a Sony ZVE1 and several Zeiss primes for LESS. Why are camcorders so irrelevant for video? Super zoom lenses are the worst quality for 3D pop and micro contrast, and all camcorders have a superzoom lens. Let's start there.

Try to shoot airshows or motorsports with a cinema camera, its a hot mess. Camcorders rule for those type applications. Ultra long lens servo zoom and small, light, ability to move around the track or airshow to gain different shots make them the right tool for those applications.

As an Olympus shooter, I have been looking for a second camera to do event work. The image doesn't need to be super cinematic. It just needs to look decent, keep everything in focus, and run for a long time.
This is where camcorders really shine. And the 1" type sensor means you can get some shallow depth of field, unlike the older 1/4" or 1/3" sensors on camcorders before. With phase-detect autofocus, it does feel like a sweet spot.
I have even been looking at some older 1080p camcorders with those really small sensors because you can find them dirt cheap on eBay ($300 or less), and some of the prosumer models are halfway decent. Again, not trying to make a Hollywood picture but capture, say, a wedding.

Oh, and... when shooting news I really don't care for the Toneh that much. What I do care about is variable ND, f2 lens at all focal lenghts, xlr inputs, streaming capabilities, sdi connectors, and the zoom range that allows me to shoot quite the distance from the angry police or rioters or flying stones. Yesterday I had a live broadcast of a funeral of a well-known person from my country, if I didn't have a great zoom camera, I wouldn't have good details of something where I didn't have the opportunity to get closer, so cameras with a large zoom are very important for our work. I've been searching for a compact yet good camcorder as i don't want to carry my a7s iii with me, you know something lighter... and cheaper lol but reality is they are SO expensive and for what quality ? I've looked at the Canon XA70 (that one has a 1" sensor compared to the xa60 and 65 which have an even smaller sensor lmao, the 75 has sdi which i dont need) but that's like 1850~ ish euro or the Panasonic x2000, even cheaper at around 1,6k but honestly. It's 1. still to big for my taste, second, that tiny a$$ sensor, no separation, no low light capability (i know, i'm spoiled with the dual gain from a7s iii) but i don't even need a 247238 gazilion times zoom. So i bought the sony cx405 for fun, very tiny, best stab, for what it is and from that year good quality. i paid like 230 euro for it. I feel like that we wont find what we are looking for in a camcorder. Your x3000 still blows most of it lmao
Now i started to look into small, compact photography cameras, i want some film sims. At first i was like either ricoh gr iii or the x100vi but then i thought it would be more fun to be able to change lenses and i think i would go for an updated version of the xe4, which is supposed to come next year. It was lost when we went full HD. My old XF100 kinda has it, usability wise at least, but the image isn't as great as I remember it being. I have been waiting for a Sony camcorder update, 4K 10 bit with S-Cinetone to match my FX6 and FX3, but the Z200 isn't it. The footage I have seen is just so noisy, noisier than my XF605, and that's saying something. I'll stick with the XF605 for now, even though it isn't a Sony like my other cameras, and hope that a Z280 update will at least have a less noisy image for ENG work. I'm also more interested in a Z90V / VX2100 sized camcorder, and also a Z280 sized camcorder, than I am a Z190 sided camcorder, so I don't know what that means for Sony, but I just don't love this new camera. Also the image looks kinda fake sometimes... if that makes any sense.

I've looked at specs of other big, expensive camcorders and they all seen to have 1-inch sensors. There must be some logical reason, though I don't know enough about the tech side of those. I have to wonder though, if it has anything to do with the huge lenses that they use which would let in more light, maybe eliminating the need for a larger sensor? Just a guess.

Camcorders are great for capturing live performances, religious services, and things that require smooth zooming where the top priority is capturing the event seamlessly; not so much for art or fun. They are utilitarian, and you can get good images. I have the ZV-E1 and the old C100Mkii somewhere in a drawer, but for a church service or a business presentation, my aging G60/XA55 fits the bill or any pro camcorder is the obvious pick if you don’t have multiple cams and Operators. Horses for courses!
Now why camcorders haven’t been retooled to better compete with mirrorless; haven’t a clue. Seems you could have both if you have the pocketbook and can stand the weight and size of the lens for the focal ranges needed.

Panasonic DVX 100 was a state of the art camcorder. James Longley filmed his documentary Iraq in Fragments with it. It had a Leica and the footage out of it was cinematic. I almost bought it. Vincent Laforet and Philip Bloom steered me away from it and other camcorders. I still went with camcorder style cine cams. Starting with Sony FS100, then 700, then FS7. Now I shoot Venice. Cannot tell you how much fun it is to have a 'proper' camera. Although, I love my A7s series:)

It completely depends on the type of work you do and the budget of the production. If you're a vlogger, a small mirrorless with a wide angle lens on a small gimbal is perfect. "Camcorder" types are perfect for news, sports broadcast, corporate conferences, sometimes documentary R&G... anything where you value the flexibility of a massive zoom range over the blurriest possible background, because you have to get the shot RIGHT NOW and you don't have 3 minutes to futz about switching lenses. I use camcorder types along with FX6's and an FX3. If the client has the budget, such as NFL or World Cup, then you can take cinema bodies and rig them on massive box lenses to get the best cinema quality along with the yuge zoom range, but most of us don't have $200,000 to spend on a single camera set up.

I still don't get the equivalency stuff all the way, so f/2.8 on a 1" sensor only lets enough light in to compare to the exposure of f/7.1 of full frame, but then IRL my experience doesn't match that. The iso and shutter values don't really change, background blur does(but that's about perspective and distance to subject too), but the amount of light doesn't and I just end up lost.
In fact I can often use lower ISO on my 1" compact than my Full Frame camera, because I can have the whole subject in focus at f/1.8 where on my full frame I have to stop down to f/3.5 or so.

I think camcorders have the potential to be good but sony just doesn't care. I got the HD sony hdr- fx1 20 years ago and it was great for filming recitals, events and concerts. I never once used it just walking around though. I agree sony is just recycling old features now. Lens stab. is very important for a video focused camera. I think they use the high megapixel camera for the auto zoom crop feature. Pretty stupid they can't get AI to automatically use the zoom lens motors instead of digital crop to follow you around. A lower MP camera would be able to do higher frame rates. Its still very expensive for a broadcast 2/3 inch B4 mount sony camera in 4k.
