The one thing I love about GoPro is being able to send it under the water. The boss at GoPro looked so similar to Johnson at Canon. It brought back bittersweet memories.
This is the video we were all waiting for when we all saw everyone's GoPro 13 videos that got launched within minutes of each other. How many disclosers of a free camera did y'all see from the different camera channels that repeated GoPro supplied talking points?
You make some very good points and you're very entertaining to watch, but it's clear that you want a camera for a different use case than the current cameras are designed for. I don't want a camera to point at my stupid face and talk to the camera like some cringe vlogger, or try and shoot "cinematic" footage with the anamorphic lens. I'm a man-child who wants to strap a camera to my face and hit record so that I can do something stupid and end up in hospital and watch the footage later. The Hero 12 with the max lens mod has been perfect for that. It's amazing at POV shots but pretty rubish at everything else. I would be very disappointed if they compromised its ability to shoot POV shots by requiring manual or selective focus. Ultimately its a camera for people doing sports to capture what they do, rather than some small form factor vlogging camera which they are pretending it can do as well. I think people are sold on the pov shots from the marketing then realise that they don't do anything cool so try and use it like a normal camera only to be understandably disappointed. I think instead of trying to make a do it all camera they should make two types, one for pov shots with a wide angle lens with everything in focus and a camera camera with a better lens for vlogging with selective focus. They could try and incorporate that into one camera, but i think the good pov shots require a built in fisheye lens. Also, they should lose the tall sensor for both.
I read it all… now I feel like the class nerd and no one wants to sit with me at lunch. Will they wedgie me or put a sign on my back that says kick me?
A 1" sensor would make sense, but GoPro could easily lose its direction and try to turn the camera into something it's not. It's an action camera and does a pretty good job of that. If they try to please everyone, they will develop a camera that isn't particularly good at any of them.

Back to the couch and depression from buyers remorse.
The only reason I have a GoPro is because I can take it underwater when I snorkel and scuba dive. Gopros are easy to pack and take on beach vacations. I have a Go Pro 8 that has survived many trips and adventures. I'll upgrade to a newer model when this one dies, if it ever does.
I've been pointing this for ages: why don't these action camera companies simply produce a lens with two focusing ranges (this isn't new, some pancake lenses do this) you have one fixed setting for infinity focus (what we have now) and a second setting (rotating the lens - something GoPro actually did with the macro attachment) that brings the camera into a close focus range. Done! No need for autofocus on those small sensors if you simply had these two fixed settings. You manually choose if you want to focus close (vlog, unboxing, b-roll shots, etc.) or far (action, landscapes, etc).
They really should slap a 1-inch or 4/3 sensor on it and give us a small aperture lens for wide focus (equivalent to what it is now) and a large aperture lens with 2-3 focus settings (like the macro lens). Solves all problems. A larger sensor is really needed when you're cropping in so hard for stabilisation.
@@Michael-dx8qz 4/3 would be too extreme due to back focal distance. The lens would have to be further away from the sensor to cover the entire sensor area and you would end up with a very big camera by action camera standards. Look at the Z-Cam E1 with a lens attached and you get an idea of the size. Even with a pancake lens it's still thick. But a 1 inch sensor is easily doable and you wouldn't need two lenses, just one with variable focus ranges and they already have a nice 1 inch sensor from the pocket 3. If you change the focus plane to a closer setting you automatically get more background blur. Infinity focus wouldn't be a problem because you already have insta360 One R 1 inch with the Leica lens that achieved that with a 3.2 aperture and by having the different focus ranges you could get away with a bigger aperture since you aren't worried with a hyperfocal distance smaller than a arm.
@@ruicosta3396 tbh I’m not really looking for a compact action cam. I am just interested in a rugged and waterproof cam that has decent quality. The action cam form factor is not for me, pretty unergonomic imo. But unfortunately the only decent rugged cameras are in the action camera form factor. The Panasonic tough series has terrible video, and waterproof casing for large cameras are unwieldy
@@Michael-dx8qz It is possible but it would be a big camera and you have to take the following into account: the hyperfocal distance for pocket 3 with 1 inch sensor is 2 meters to infinity. 4/3 would be more than 2 meters for the same equivalent focal length. On a drone you usually don't need to focus on the foreground. On an action camera where you need everything in focus from foreground to background it would be a challenge and you would definitely need a lens with a smaller aperture. That's why I think 1 inch with different focusing ranges would be a sweet spot. Because on an action camera you would have a lens with a shorter focal length than the pocket 3 (~15mm instead of 20mm) and that would bring the hyperfocal distance closer to the camera, meaning you could maintain a reasonably big aperture, something you wouldn't be able to do with 4/3. But it is possible, and I certainly would like such a camera. I just don't know if most people would be able to use its full potential.

In early times I thought "This go pro crew could make great semi normal size cams with their know how. " But yes, they do seem to want to work as little as possible.
As you mentioned, I give them props for actually finally pushing past 240fps. They've had 240 since the Hero 3 lol. Granted that was at 480p but still. This is the first time they've pushed past 240fps in over a decade. And the close focusing lens with a focus ring is sick. But it's literally the same exact sensor from last year. You can tell with the heatsinks that are built into the body, they're worried about the overheating. I wouldn't be surprised if we see stories of the 13 overheating just because they're pushing more power through the older sensor.
Love your videos and sense of humor. Have been following for years. I do not agree with this review though. I'm not a GoPro fan but the square (almost) sensor is the best thing ever. I can mount the camera in any orientation on my paraglider and then post crop to whatever format I need. I would like to have a circular sensor actually so I do not need to worry about level horizon. You know what would be the best new feature? A second lens that is much less wide that records at the same time :-).
The 15 second burst at 400Hz frame rate on the DJI is probably limited by the camera's internal buffer and card write speed. The sensor's data speed is probably 400FPS, but the time limit is just because the buffer fills and it can't write to the card fast enough. They could record for longer if they used something like a CFExpress card (much higher data rate so writes keep up with the buffer) instead of SD card, or a larger buffer for the high speed video. The problem is that CFExpress cards are very expensive; More than the camera. My 512GB CFExpress card for my R5C was $500-ish a year or two ago, while the equivalent size SD card is $50-70CAD. They would also need to use a CPU that exposes PCI express to use CFExpress, which would add to the expense of the camera. It's all about balancing the costs against device performance and capabilities so that they land in their target market segment. Still, 15 seconds at 400Hz is insanely long for high speed filming. Cool stuff.
@cameraconspiracies Hmmm, I tried to look it up and neither manufacturer publishes detailed video bit rate specifications (like Canon does; I can find the card bitrate required for each mode on the R5C for instance), so it would be difficult to know for sure. I'm assuming you mean the Akaso Brave 8 (saw you had a video for it, showing 480fps), but when I check the manual and site, they don't list anything 720p or even 480fps. Either their site/manual is outdated, or they just don't publish that mode. The DJI must have a technical reason for why they can only buffer 15 seconds at 400FPS. They probably record higher quality video, since it's over double the price of the Akaso. Again, neither publish that detailed specification, so it's difficult to see where the bottleneck is.
I like action cams for the action, I usually upgrade every 4 yrs.... but not now :D I just buy new batteries and thats it. Well, and I like freediving.... and enduro/DH biking....and freeride on snowboard :D So no sharks or cougars :D GP13 is GP 11 and 12 hidden in a gimmick coat.

Although I learned decades ago from a creative, don't believe the hype, a similar wisdom has been dispensed from the cinematic North. Work with what I have. This allows me to, potentially, donate bitcoin.
Actually i remember gopro made an announcement about their enthusiastic project, that concern in 4 categories(action cam, pro cam, etc). Maybe last year if i was not mistaken. But well, yet again another deeper hole to dig himself with their "upgrade & improvement".
They just need to go back to the external underwater case. A) Changeable lenses, whether by gopro's will or by the DIY crowd reminding the hipsters this was a thing B) Less overheating when not underwater since the camera can actually breathe the air of life. I still have a Gopro 4 black with a slightly narrower field of view lens I bought for like $5, and by simply changing the amount it is screwed in, you change focus. It's silly how easy it would be for gopro to do this if they stepped back from the built in water housing. Some cute little markings for Vlog, Macro, and Infinity and little in between color coded marks so we can remember other focus zones we use often intuitively. Particularly for divers that want to focus on little things like sea slugs and coral close up it would be useful to be able to set based on the dive they plan. Gopro your welcome.
I watch you because you’re real not bought! I’m just waiting for the investors response to GoPro for the markets feedback to the new Hero 13. Let’s call it Mama Cass performing Swan Lake.
The 400fps at 720p is quite honestly pathetic. Their reused processor must be underpowered. The old stacked 1-inch sensors used in Sony cameras like RX10, RX100, ZV1, and even the tiny RX0 can handle 1000fps at up to around 900p and I think around full 1080p at 480fps. GoPro should be officially retired from the market after 13. Good number to retire after
Beginner here…. ….been watching your vids for some time now. Love em!! ….quick question… ….i have a Sony apsc, and, am wondering if there are any prime lenses that will give the lovely 3D pop, and, still fit the apsc form factor? …I’ll take anything ranging from 27mm up to 55mm. I am sure my question was as a mature as I am, haha! 😎
Uh-oh.. I've just ordered it! I feel like a terrible person but I love the 8:7 sensor. Yep.. social media baby! Haha. Okokok.. not much of an update but some things are great. They put GPS back in and you CAN use a DJI mic2 without the dongle or mediamod!.. I'm sure the bigger sensor will come in the 14 with a new processor
I was thinking they’d really step it up after last year. Guess not… I still use my Hero 8 for motovlogs on my ebike. I don’t have problems with overheating because Instagram prefers 1080… so if I ever need to upgrade I’m leaning DJI now. I already have their cancer causing wireless mic that came with the Pocket 3

Worse, we'll see someone selling mini attachable dan or cage with fan to cool down those heatsink
Nailed it! Great video.
Cool stuff.
Akaso does unlimited 720p 480fps to micro SD cards.
@@cameraconspiracies Interesting. It might be a lower data rate or bit rate or higher compression than the DJI to allow that.
I gave you the like on the comedy
The more features put into a camera - affects operating heat and battery life. A balance is needed.
Literally lol and spit out my drink during the GoPro lens rant @ 6:15. Hilarious!
No lies told
Last week, I bought a Pentax K1 Mark II.
That's how I roll.
Isn’t the wierd sensor used for Horizon Lock?
Please do a video showing us how to do slow motion videos (basics)
Although I am a surfer bro outdoors idiot who needs to grow up that uses GoPro… Reluctantly… Only because of their waterproof capabilities... I will still remain subscribed… And agree with 87.3% of what you said here
Then he wonders why he doesn’t get an advanced copy of the camera for review…🤣 They knew they will get roasted 😆
Question? Is that the name of your cat? Chuckle?😂
It should be. Remember MTM show with Chuckles the clown??.
I just love the word Chuckle. Something a Canadian would say. I hope you respond. I miss you too
01:40 In your sunglasses i can see that you are gesticulating with your hands, even if the camera can't see it. These and similar details make you special. If someone had sent me a GoPro for a review, I would make it available to you. Have a nice day and thanks again for your video....
Well, I haven't own a GoPro in years. Definitely seems enticing. I have to see when
DJI action 5 - bigger sensor.
and
Insta360 Ace Pro 2 - amazing software.
All come out before buying.
The Action 4 exist, and yet GoPro didn't even try to match the specs. 😂
Although I learned decades ago from a creative, don't believe the hype, a similar wisdom has been dispensed from the cinematic North. Work with what I have. This allows me to, potentially, donate bitcoin.
Rectilinear, I concur, that's where it is at.
Love your videos! You are definitely not being put on the list after that rant, lol
Actually i remember gopro made an announcement about their enthusiastic project, that concern in 4 categories(action cam, pro cam, etc). Maybe last year if i was not mistaken.
But well, yet again another deeper hole to dig himself with their "upgrade & improvement".
Go pro is the new iPhone 😂
Finally you make complete sense 😂😂😂😂😂.
I'm confused about the hate for Gopro. I have the 12 and it's great!
Next camera for the channel needs to be the Blackmagic micro and compare it to the action cams
It’s literally the same camera as my 11, just a slightly bigger battery. Which also makes me wonder why the 12 couldn’t have gps
GP13 has a new sensor for this wondering. They have changed the vertical dimensions to the horizontal ones, rotating the sensor - which is square!
I watch you because you’re real not bought! I’m just waiting for the investors response to GoPro for the markets feedback to the new Hero 13. Let’s call it Mama Cass performing Swan Lake.
Refresh after refresh.
How do I swap the lenses while holding a waterski rope with one hand and fighting off a shark with the other?
you are my favorite. period.
Casey: why wont camera companies send me gear.
also CAsey: shits on Go Pro for the last 7 minutes (deservingly so ) . . . I am at 7:51
😂😂😂😂😂😂
"the ex" been a while since i heard someone say that 😂
Who'z using 720p in 2024? Nobody GoPro, no-bo-dy, Period
You are right 1080p really GoPro you go down to 720p we are going backwards instead of forwards and they might sell lots of cameras
These camera brands don't send you gear because they don't want the smoke.
Imagine giving free food to someone to only get dissed and spat on. Not everyone has a big heart (or masochist enough) to take those
