Also, when I was editing this video, I was thinking, 'You sound like you don't like Anthony when you're clapping back at him for how he treats Benedict for 95% of this season' which I found funny because Anthony Bridgerton served me so much 👏🏻QUALITY👏🏻ENTERTAINMENT👏🏻 in season 2 with his messy, dramatic, feral-for-Kate ways and I love that about him. 🤣

@@LadyJenevia thanks you. I've always found Benedict the most interesting of the characters in the show, mainly because Luke Thompson has a way of being noticed with just a look. Nothing too obvious just a subtle change of expression or gesture to deepen his character without words and without upstaging the main characters. It's what the actors art is really about.

I like the phrase emotional labor. That would be accurate. Benedict carries a heavy burden. He lost his father too, in addition to nearly losing his heavily pregnant mother soon thereafter. He is acutely aware of the magnitude it has had on all of his siblings. They have all internalized it. They have not addressed it altogether, and even separately as brothers and elders to the point where Gregory knows nothing about his father at all. Pretending like it never happened has not served them. Instead it has created an underlying sibling rivalry where Anthony feels like being firstborn made him a prisoner, Benedict feels like an imposter for being second, and Colin is confused because being third gave him no birthright. In fact they are all suffering deeply in their own way. There is no benefit to one over the other since it is the same loss. For Benedict, art appears to be his form of escape. It will be interesting to see what happens with him next season as we have started to see that the donation has been detrimental.
Benedict has been my favourite from the start (love how Luke plays him) its why he features the most in my MA thesis haha

I just had to pause at 31:28 cause I was laughing so hard at "oh Benedict, you sweet little baby capybara" 😆he really is like a capybara - super chill, lets everyone hang out with him, running on pure vibes. I dig it.
I LOVE CAPYBARAS. I LOVE THEM. One of my favourite capybara stories is the fact that scummy capitalists in Argentina overtook their natural habitat in a specific area of Argentina to build houses but the capybaras refused to leave so they still stay roaming around that area even though it's full of people because IT WAS THEIR HOME FIRST. Team capybara!
In season 3, I hope we get a scene where Benedict and Violet get drunk. Benedict is drinking because he is lost in life, and Violet is drinking because she doesn't know what to do now that Kate is the new women of the house. Maybe Kate straight up makes her drink. I'm currently not sure where Violet stands with Kate, how well they get along, or how much she actually likes her other than she makes her son happy.

I don’t know just yet. There is still the release of the spin-off series to get to so I will wait and see how my channel is doing in the lead-up to season 3 and how many people have watched this specific video by then before deciding how I will proceed. ☺️

I didn't really notice Benedict while watching the series to be honest. Only after watching a youtube video that was recommended to me, with all those funny expressions and jokes of him, I started to see what I missed. I'm really thankful to you for repeatedly pointing out Benedicts greatness in all the videos and now explaining it in full length. I mostly got to appreciate him trough you. He definitely deserves it and I'm now too looking forward to his thriving.
Hopefully he gets a little bit more to do in season three because he's been regarded like a wallflower for far too long! 🥹

This video has made me the favor of not having to go back to season one and made a rewatch just for Benedict's scenes. I thank you for your services. I enjoyed it tremendously and made me feel even more connected to Benedict and hope his time comes in when he can feel all the love of his HEA. And here the manifestation circle Netflix gives you the opportunity to bein a junket and ask Luke interesting questions
I did not even mind that this one is longer than 1h, enjoyed every minute😊 Benedict is the sweetest, at least in the show, and we have high hopes for his season. While not perfect, so far Netflix have done a decent job and even improved the stories of this series in my opinion. I don't believe it's a spolier to say that Benedict's story from the book needs much improvement and we hope that he will get the story he deserves as a character.
That was why I made sure to timestamp the sections ~ so then people can watch it in chunks if they want/need to. I know it's very long. 🤣
The first series improved on the book but, in my view, the second series failed as Netflix changed the story badly. I particularly disliked the competition between the sisters.
There was no competition as far as I am concerned. They did do Edwina a little dirty and made her oblivious and childish because they had to bring in more drama, but there were so many improvements, that all in all it is an upgrade from the source material to me: Anthony and Kate were not forced to mary, they chose eachother, their respective traumas were more realistic than in the book, Anthony really was a gentleman (no caveman behaviour), just to name a few things 🙂
@@ligiaserban9218 the sisters' relationship is far more important than creating drama. My concern is, how do they recover from that? The book dealt far better with the storyline as the sister was happy to oblige her family by marrying without her heart being engaged, therefore she felt no pain upon discovering that her sister loved him.
It's sad and hilarious you have to point out that if the actor turns out to be a trash man that this video is not an endorsement of that lol. Actors are really going wild these days and you never know who's going to turn out to be a mess, do you? I really enjoyed this episode! In general I enjoy your content, because there's a nice cross-section of things we both love lol. Benedict is such a sweetheart and he's really doing the best he can with his whole Spare situation. Antony can definitely be disappointing when he's on a real tear, which he is often enough, and I look forward to seeing what a Benedict more prepared to stand up for himself will respond with. I read these books back in high school, but because that was a decade and a half ago, I might as well be watching with fresh eyes and I'm enjoying the surprises along with everyone else.
LISTEN... I used to be a LOUD demander online for "The Man from Uncle 2" because I really enjoy that film and there is/was loads of potential to see those characters back together and their relationships explored further and you can imagine how quickly I had to stop saying that online, lest anyone think that me praising a film that is the work of HUNDREDS (or more like thousands) of people is an endorsement of... that. 🙃
@@LadyJenevia If we were only allowed to enjoy the work comprised entirely of decent people, I fear there isn't a single project that would qualify, but I have to say there's nobody in recent memory to make as big a mess of his own reputation as The Unmentioned. To be fair, I don't think he's distinctive enough as an actor that it wouldn't be possible to continue that franchise with another actor in his place. Blandsome is a dime a dozen in Hollywood.
I try to explain that to people. There's a lot of moral policing on social media that people take so far that they're constantly trying to make other people boycott this or boycott that because ______ is involved in some way but films and television series are the culmination of the labour of SO MANY PEOPLE that there is no 'perfect' way to be 100% 'ethical' in what you consume. You just do your best and try to be conscientious. 🤷🏻♀️

So I love what you said about romantic fiction at the end. There’s a South Korean miniseries called It’s Okay to Not Be Okay where her romance is with one brother but she develops a hilarious but heart-melting sibling relationship with the other brother. And really, as she was abused by her parents and was an only child, I think the sibling one was the kind of love she really needed 😢
But so I loved this video! I agree way to many people sleep on this character. It’s funny because I think Benedict knows his passion but like you said, has so many doubts largely do his family, and Colin clearly is completely adrift trying to find his purpose… but no one checks up on them since they tend to be the ones cracking jokes the most. And I love Violet but she really only seems to be concerned with them getting married than them chasing their passions
Also I didn’t notice his facial expressions in the background until my second run through but holy crap I still missed a lot 😅

I personally hope they change Sophie into a governess instead of having her be a maid. Because technically she’s not “working class” she’s in a weird in between status…she has had the education and upbringing of the upper class but no rights to it…so having her be a governess would be far more appropriate and somewhat less squicky

I thoroughly enjoyed this breakdown. As a Benedict fan, I missed so many moments in season 2, the drama overshadowed everything. Let the record show this breakdown can be enjoyed in one sitting, it's that good. Can't wait for season 3, praying for more screen time. May Netflix hear your calls..
A little over halfway through, and I want to comment on Benedict, with spoiler free comparison.
If they continue to not only write the seasons with the consciousness of addressing those areas that were very cringy from each characters books, as well as keeping the character building of Benedict in the direction they continue to go--- we will be fawning over Benedict even more throughout his entire season. I look forward to it.
EDIT: I just hope that if it is something as big as the complete change of the library scene from Kate and Anthony, please let it be for the better and not for the let down.

Coming back to watch this video for the 14th, maybe 15th, time after watching your most recent Bridgerton video. This is probably one of my all time favorite videos on TH-cam. It’s always nice to see someone who loves Benedict just as much as me 😭

Oh my word! Literally paused so many times to be like *THIS* *THIS* *YES*. Such a great video (I've literally been checking your channel every week since you teased this video and the wait is definitley worth it!) I utterly agree that Benedict is the Bridgerton's emotional support puppy for the Bridgerton family. I did my own analysis on tumblr a couple weeks ago that hit most of your points + UTTERLY have the headcanon that post-father death (remembering that Violet was emotionally absent due to her depression) Benedict definitley stepped up into that pastoral, emotional role for his sibings. But that's just me :) Great video once again, I love the care you put into every video.
I hope they unpack at least SOME of that for Benedict in his own season since so many people (including some fans of the show) seem to not notice just how draining it is for Benedict to do all of this emotional labour with seemingly little to no thanks given to him for it.

Also I do share your annoyance about the Featherington subplot and it did get me very annoyed but someone did point out that due to Polin being next, the audience needed to like Portia as much as Violet. For all the Featherington plot shenanigans it did show that ultimately Portia will put her daughters first (however I also agree with you that they still have not addressed the emotional abuse that Portia has put upon Penelope).
Obviously in a show like this you need to set up for the next season and I think the reason why Anthony's set up in S1 seemed less jarring than this Featherington subplot is because it doesnt contrast/connect with the Kanthony main storyline well. Obviously in narrative terms, subplots are supposed to enhance or contrast the main storyline and the Featherington subplot didn't quite seems so connective and that is why I suddenly felt pulled out of the pace/feel of Kanthony when they did those cuts to the Featheringtons.
I don't know just some rambling thoughts of mine (I got a English lit degree and my brain now hyper-analyses things) 😅

I hadn't thought about it until you said it but Kate and Benedict scenes are a must for future seasons and I belive Kate would have a great perspective about 2 people from diferent social status choosing love... like her father and stepmother 😍
The show did so little with Tessa that part of me wishes they had used Kate to explore things with Benedict further, and communicate a lot of the same things we got out of his interactions with Tessa. Obviously not the romantic entanglement, but his respect for Tessa's defiance of the status quo, that could have just as easily been communicated by having Benedict and Kate actually TALK about her skills with hunting. Like imagine if we'd had a sequence where Kate is saying correct information about hunting and Anthony is refusing to do what she says because in his own words, "Ladies do not hunt," and then Benedict applies whatever wisdom she was sharing and actually wins. 😂
Then again, I don't really love the idea of seeing animals get hunted on screen anyway but the essence of that exchange played out in that trio under different circumstances could have been cute. 🥹
@@LadyJenevia I personally would love Tessa and Madame Delacroix meeting Benedict's true love and instead of being stereotypically mean, they would vouched for him when Sophie is not sure about starting something with him or for them to help them in their love story somehow, there's a romance novel by Sarah Maclean called Nine Rules to Break When Romancing a Rake where the heroine meets the heroe's former mistress and she basically says the he's a good person and wishes them the best, it was mind-blowing and I want that for Benedict and Sophie

I expect to see a huge character development (which means as much character development is possible in an 8-episode season with the screen time that they will give him). I really don't know or could guess what could come next for Benedict but I'm here for it. Luke Thompson is a great actor and I'm glad you pointed out his acting abilities.

A friendship between him and Will would be so perfect. The Mondriches are among my favourite characters and I'm so glad the production didn't remove them (since Will was Simon's friend and of course we all know RJP, and as a result Simon, isn't in the series anymore). More scenes with Eloise as well would be perfect. And I'm certain that this backyard with the swings could be their emotional "sanctuary" where they can talk openly to each other about everything.
As for Anthony, I honestly feel he's more of a viscount to his siblings and less of a brother (i think I've said that on another video too). Anyway, I hope that this will change for Anthony now.
I am one of those who deep inside likes the featheringtons. I like the acting mainly and not the plots so much, but I understand that s2 focused on them more that it should. I can't see that changing for s3 though, considering that Penelope is the female lead.
I'm hoping that we'll see more of mister Granville in Benedict's season. I understand that secondary/supportive characters change in every season but some of them have to stay, and Granville is one of them for me. Maybe he could also help Benedict bounce back after he found out about the donation.
I hope that s4 will focus on Benedict. However, the "three brothers in a row" pattern is concerning me. We know that the series has a 4-year contract and if they don't renew it my biggest wish would be to see a season focusing on both Benedict's and Eloise's romance stories (with more than 8 episodes obviously)

I know I picked on Anthony in this video but I don't actually dislike the character, and I don't expect that he will be emotionally stunted towards Benedict or anyone else in his family in season 3. He'll be in a much better state now that he's happy in love instead of self-flagellating all the time. 😆
I actually wouldn't be surprised if Benedict is the one struggling more in season 3 since it could work as a set-up to him being the lead of his own season. We'll see, though. I don't want to get it in my head that he will be season 4 until there is an official announcement. 😂
@@LadyJenevia the thing i forgot to say above is that i had the subtitles on (it helps me sometimes since I'm not a native English speaker) and I was focused to see the mistakes the auto subtitles makes as you've mentioned in community hub. It's sad to see that happening but I'm sure no one would blame you for that. We know you try your best to provide us with the best content possible
I'm in the process of changing those auto-subtitles to my own subtitles that are more accurate but when I publish those there will be some synchronisation issues which I can't fix because TH-cam changes the timing even if I try to correct them. 🙃

Wow! This was such an incredibly insightful and beautiful video to watch. You have so much additional insight into the character of Benedict that I completely missed when watching the show. I loved Benedict for the humor and jokes he brings to dialogue of the show but now I also love and appreciate the empathy he displays for his family and friends around him. Maybe his season was pushed back to explore more of the emotional toll Anthony’s actions had on Benedict’s confidence in his artistic pursuits. Also, I imagine we’ll also see the aftermath of the fight between Eloise and Penelope in the 3rd season so she might not be in a good spot either to really act as a proper emotional confidante and support system for Benedict. I feel like these two main factors, which I was inspired to consider based on the commentary in your video, could be why Benedict’s season has been delayed. Ideally, I feel Benedict needs to work through and overcome some of the insecurities and emotional turmoil he’s facing first, so that he can be more emotionally stable in order to support and fight for his love interest later on. It would probably be too much for the writers to tackle all of this and his love story in an 8 episode season, so starting out resolving some of this inner conflict in the 3rd season gives the writers more wiggle room to go more in depth on interactions between Benedict and his love interest when they take center stage. Overall, I really loved this video and I look forward to any commentary you’ll have on Penelope and Colin when season 3 airs.

I totally agree interviewers rarely ask interesting questions about the thought process behind the character or performance, but I want to know that stuff. Worth watching an interview Luke Thompson did with an actor despairs because that one was really interesting regarding his background in theatre and how he came to this point. Probably the only interview he has done where the interview asked questions of any substance. Yesss! So happy to see Ben in the spotlight! As the Benedict in my family its so good to see a more in depth look at his character in this season and overall. I love the scenes he's a part of he always steals it in the background. The facial expressions in the altar scene and the hunting scene are genius. I agree i don't think he knew exactly what was going on with Anthony and Kate but knew enough to support Anthony anyway he could because he knew Anthony isn't always the best listener. I think its interesting in his creativity that it extends to his cravat and its tied in his own way compared to Anthony and Colin.

Can I just say I’m so happy that I stumbled upon your channel very recently like a day or 2 ago! I love absolutely love deep diving and analyzing something I love/passionate about, I enjoy your sense of humor immensely and love it, you have such a keen eye, it inspired me to look even closer and be even more deeply immersed next time I’m watching Bridgerton, because of this video, Benedict became my absolute fav along with Anthony ( I love how they are flawed and human specially Anthony and how he was in season one,how they evolve) I have to admit that I was focused on the main characters and I totally missed appreciating those moments I saw that you highlighted here that really show what an admirable gentleman and wonderful man/human Benedict is both to his family and women, how respectful he is, in my opinion the gentle mixed with humor way he digs at Anthony plus any incidents of the sort are not just because he avoids conflict , it’s just who he is, he will not let questionable behavior slide ,he will be loving his brother getting roasted because he deserved it , but he won’t be loud , disrespectful, harsh or impolite about it.
I love that with him even though he didn’t get much of screen time specially in S2 but it felt adequate because the moments of him shown were meaningful and loaded with exciting foreshadowing , I too pray that season 4 is his season and I hope it rivals season 2 , I too feel he is going to be so deliciously intense and I can’t wait. Love to Kamiko ♥️🥰😺 and about what that comment said that he already met or his love interest already showed up! That is totally not correct, I never even heard of such theory and why and how it could exist, I read Benedict’s book and I know her, I can confirm she didn’t make an appearance on either season one or two! This video is simply *chef's kiss*. I adore show Benedict, by far my fav and he definitely deserves his flowers many times over! I'm really hoping we get to see Edmund through Benedict's eyes at some point, I feel like it would be a great opportunity for him to connect to someone or just further flesh out his character. In the book (non-spoiler) he has a bowl of rocks that are "sentimental" one of which he points out was picked up the day his father died; he also makes reference to feeling a "surge of awareness" prior to pivotal moments (Edmund's death for one). I wasn't a massive fan of the book however I felt those character details really resonated with the empathic,intuitive, sentimental Benedict we see in the show (which I much prefer). Really hoping they let him keep his bowl of rocks lol
I actually can't wait for benedict's season to come and see you compare book and show Benedict like you did with Anthony. (No spoiler: Book Benedict will make you love show Benedict even more). Bcoz truth to be told I'm not a fan of book Benedict so much even though he is a good guy and redeems himself; he's not my favorite bridgerton but Luke Thompson literally changed my perception of Benedict....that's what a good actor can do to the character he/she plays. Eagerly waiting for Colin and Benedict's story to unfold.

I loved Benedict on the show and recently read his book and didn’t like his behavior in it at all. Sophie is great but Benedict really annoyed me. I hope the writers change his book behavior quite a bit.

I watched your video up to the end and I'm happy to know that there is someone who has done a thorough reading of "Bridgerton" through the study of the characters, and has not only watched the sex scenes made with the "hot guy" marveling that one of these actors is gay! It's only been a month since I discovered "Bridgerton" but after seeing it in Italian for the first time, I've already spent many hours listening to it in the original language and stopping the video to better appreciate the expressions of each character or extra. So I can say that you are right when you say that Benedict does not know about Anthony's feeling for Kate right away, in fact in my opinion, he only understands it during the walk after the ruinous wedding, when he notices the way Anthony and Kate look at each other from afar, while Edwina looks away.

Thank you for the great video! So observing, funny and entertaining! I think despite Bridgerton siblings being very close and mostly supportive, they sometimes take each other for granted and put each other in boxes: too serious big brother, goofy second one, a stroppy and a perfect sister. So a big part of their growing as a character is start to appreciate each other: Daphne changed and saw Anthony struggles, Anthony tried his best with younger ones and endeavoured to help Benedict the way he was used to do stuff (if you want it, you get it). I read the book and without the spoilers, if you put some typical Julia Quinn's controversy away, he has some great qualities in there, to make the character really hot for me: determination and commitment.
I've already had people trying to harp on me for being "mean" to Anthony in this video, as if I haven't already CLEARLY prioritised hyping him and Kate's romance up before even circling back around to Benedict 😂 ~ In general, I'm fine with the siblings not always being great to each other at first because they have to have somewhere to go/grow/evolve towards over the course of their season(s) on the show. 🫶🏻
I approach reading the books as research so it doesn't 'bother' me as much if there's something in there I don't like (such as men being waaaaaaay too aggressive). I liked being able to review season 2 and tell readers "Yeah... all those gross parts of violating Kate's consent? Not in the show!" 😁

Not suprised he was the way he was, all stiff and insecure and stuck in certain routine. He convinced himself he has to pretend and play an even-tempered men. I relate a lot to him (for better and for worst XD) and he's one of my favorite characters.
It makes me want to ask if you would consider doing it for other characters in this show?
I'm looking forward to seeing what they will do with Beneict in season 3 and how they will set up his season. Because you're right, they are clearly setting him (and the family) for his inter-class romance.
Something to add to your analysis: I am persuaded that the "emotional support" role he has taken was forced upon him by circumstances when Edmund died and Violet shut down. Yes, she was in shock and had a big depressive episode and Anthony was forced to set his feelings aside to become the patriarch at the ripe age of 18 .... But I think Benedict, who was even younger (maybe 15 or 16?), was forced to become the emotional support of his siblings since there was no one else capable of doing it at the time and the kids desperately needed it. And then this role stuck, even after Violet recovered and was able to be the ever-loving mother again.
I wonder if this will be explored...
I wonder how/if most of the "fatal" flaws of the siblings relate to this period of their life. It must have been traumatizing. Losing your father so suddenly, having your mother completely shut down for weeks/months, almost losing her too when she had Hyacinth... all this while being very young.
I haven't read his book yet but for what I have been spoiled ... You might not like Book Benedict very much (I know I probably won't if I ever read the book) because, well, he is not the same character... Personality-wise, it seems to me like Show Benedict is closer to Book Colin.
And, well, it shows in how even in the show they are similar in some important aspects. They are both kind-hearted, witty, supportive, and open-minded. Both respect and support the working class (like how Colin brought friends to Will's club and apologized to him for the necessary charade). Both have a richer inner word that they only show to their most trusted and closest people. Both seem to have deep-rooted confidence issues in at least one or more aspects of their life (Benedict when it comes to his art and Colin for how he thinks no one takes him seriously, is "desperate" to prove himself/appear like a grown-up, and how he doesn't know what to do with his life). Both are romantics who believe in love (though, that's not from the Book). *
But Colin is younger (he's around 21 I believe), much less mature, and still looking for his path in life while Benedict has been forced to grow up quick and has found his passion.
I think the tea scene was Colin trying to be there for Benedict and show him support. It looks like Eloise and Colin are the two who he can open up to and who can at least try to give back the emotional support he provides. So we might see a lot of them next season :)
*Actually, most of this also applies to Penelope. Or even the absolute queen Lady Danbury ... There's definitely a trend for the characters I have affection for. XD

The minute this showed up in my feed of channels to which I subscribe, I dropped everything to watch your always brilliant, insightful commentary. As always, you have the BEST commentary on TH-cam and make the most astute distinctions, commenting on the psychological and sociological subtleties throughout this series. You've outdone yourself with this particular video in my opinion, bec. unlike most other people commenting on Bridgerton, you get the class distinctions, and are not shy about your own attitudes towards elitism and the aristocracy. I could write so much more but I just want you to know that THIS subscriber totally appreciates your deep insights, class commentary, and opinions. I adored Benedict, and caught all those idiosyncracies you discuss and am in heaven watching and listening to you. I certainly hope this long discussion isn't over other viewers' heads. BUT, my great disappointment is that the coming season will NOT be his season, and I understand why Shondaland and Netflix have moved Penelope and Colin into Season 3, because they know what the public want, and the numbers seem to have directed them this way. To my mind that's a huge mistake and many fans will lose interest. I'm fighting my own urge to not watch the coming season. I had hoped for Benedict and then Eloise, as Seasons 3 and 4. C'est la vie. As I keep saying, I do feel for the Bendetict fans who have to wait longer for their season.
However, his scene leaving art school is why I am glad his season is not coming yet. Bear with me.
In order to start his arc of realizing he is deserving of his endeavors, he needs to find confidence in himself again. He needs to realize that despite what his brother did, he is still talented and worthy.
Once this happens, he can earn Sophie’s love and feels worthy of hers. Sophie may feel the same.
I get wanting his season now, but I really want it to be good and worthwhile and not rushed. That will hurt the fans more.

Hear me out 🎤in defense of the Featheringtons: Were this show be called after them, instead of the Bridgertons…would we not have an exciting narrative about their financial and moral struggles as well? If more not so, as they are “slightly” less privileged than the other family.
Portia is a great solid character, prudence I can’t stand and Philippa is a cheese loving sweetheart who happened to find love. We might despise them because the whole Cinderella narrative Penelope is wrapped in. But they are certainly more alluring in the show than in the boosts. Thank you for all this content, it’s makings the wait for season 3 more bearable ❤
