@@jenm1 Only when he's acting the way he thinks he's meant to instead of being true to himself. And the minute he messes up he doesn't put on a show of bravado that the men around him would do and try to blame others including Penelope, he accepts he messed up, he admits that's he made things even worse, and he also says openly that they should have done what Penelope said to begin with. He is willing to listen to the women in his life and their wisdom. You can see that in his interactions with his mother, with his sister in law Kate on the eve of his wedding and with Penelope which he acknowledges he couldn't have published his book without.

Who would actually want someone like that? Please be for real. What's wrong with being a soft lover and a hopeless romantic looking to share love and connection?? I said it once and I'll say it until the end of time - Colin's simple "you wanna marry me or what?" is *infinitely* more romantic than Simon or Anthony or George's anguished (i.e. emotionally constipated) declarations. Give me a man who knows what he wants and _goes for it_ without tying himself into knots about it until he's screaming at his supposed "love."
Dear Men: hold out your hand and say "yo, let's do this, babe" with a big doofy grin on your face, don't shout about how much it _hurts_ you to love me. o_O Pass on that ish.
Helps that I've been with my golden retriever sweetie for 19 years now. ;) We have an anniversary season (Mar 10 thru May 5) because we can't remember when we "officially" started dating, we were just pretty instantly in the zone. Sometimes romance is just being besties straight off.

It makes since with all 3 characters that you mentioned don't belive that they deserve the love that they are given and want. So, they are trying to resist what they want. I believe Colin's attempts to find connection, meaning, and purpose, his class clown or hero personas, and his relationship issues all through the show are tied up in a kind of trauma reaction to losing his father and his mother's deep grief/depression at an impressionable age. These could all easily be explained as possible reactions to abandonment issues if the initial loss happened when he was old enough to remember but not enough to fix anything. Since he couldn't save his father or cure his mother's grief, the best he could do is entertain everyone and make them as safe and happy as possible with the tools available to a young boy. He may not have been able to progress past that until the family trauma had healed more through time passing and the eventual marriages of his older sister and brother (those relationships helped each sibling deal with their trauma, so they could be better help to Colin by example). It's obvious to me that Colin craves connection and commitment for roughly the same reason Anthony ran screaming from it for years. Because the tragic sudden loss of their father and their mother's extreme complicated grief took part of their childhood and made them all grow up too fast in some ways while stunting their development in others. Daphne and Anthony became de facto parents and head of household even while Daphne hadn't yet entered puberty and Anthony had only just reached his majority, years before either should have been expected to shoulder these burdens. Colin couldn't take on either role, so he became everyone's entertainment, their respite. But who comforts the comforting one? No one. Who respects the hard work behind entertaining everyone? No one. So he gave without anyone realizing how much he gave, worked for years with no one seeing that it was work. Emotional labour is a real thing deserving respect, but Colin and Benedict did so much of it while being passed by like wallpaper. It's frustrating.

Colin is my favorite Bridgerton. I kept saying he ignores the rules with Pen. Grabbing her hand, pulling her into rooms and closing the door. He never even signs her dance card. I noticed how fast he moved after the carriage scene as well. By the next morning he already had the house lined up and had gotten her ring to the jewler to be sized. Because he gave her the ring the day after he shows her the house. I envisioned him waking Violet up early to get the ring and get it to the jewler 😂. Thanks for the content.

I’m glad I’m not the only one that notices but how come is it that he only did this with Pen? With Marina, he was following social protocols to a certain extent but with Pen, he didn’t care. Can someone dissect this for me?

    • @Prairiepagan316
      @Prairiepagan316 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +32

@monicacervera2252 I feel it is because he doesn't see her like he sees everyone else. He even says, " You are Pen. You don't count. " He honestly thinks she is just different than the rest of the Ton. I feel like when they are on the sidelines poking fun at everyone, they are both sort of on the same "team," them against everyone else. Both of them are overlooked by their families and not taken seriously by the Ton. In my mind, he reasons that he shouldn't get judged for being alone with her because it is so "obvious" that nothing would ever happen between them. He never got awkward or flustered with Marina or any of the other women. Because he didn't have any dog in the fight with them. He was attracted to Marina and the other women, but he couldn't stay away from Pen. Can you imagine Anthony telling him to not go see Pen? Colin bribed a maid so he could see her. He didn't make that effort with Marina. Just my thoughts.

    • @KS-ev2zu

Yes I also noticed that there was a major contrast from season 1 and 2 vs season 3 with how he treated Pen in regards to social rules. Like you said in season 1 and 2 he ignored all the rules (holding her hand, being alone together, even ignored her when she brought up that it looks bad to be alone without a chaperone). But in season 3 he suddenly is very concerned about following the rules. Suddenly he is asking her if she needs a chaperone being outside alone, he worries about how the ton views him helping her find a husband, heck he even asks her if she is worried about them being alone in their future home (even though they had already crossed the line of social behavior of courting * ie ...the carriage scene) . I feel the show did a great job showing how his view of Pen changed by his observance of socially accepted behavior with her. He finally saw himself as a suitor and thus the became more aware of his actions and societies expectations of him. That is just my thoughts on it. Would love to see if anyone maybe has other thoughts?

    • @Prairiepagan316
      @Prairiepagan316 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

@KS-ev2zu I sort of feel like this is all part of Colin's oblivious behavior. We all know he was completely unaware of Pen's feelings for him in the first two seasons. I think he had feelings for her, he just didn't recognize what it was. He had been told his whole life that love was like a thunderbolt. He even says something about their relationship evolving quite naturally. I feel while all this is happening in the background, Colin is ignoring the rules. Once he starts to realize how much he looks forward to letters from her, that never come, once she starts paying more attention to other men, then his thinking begins to shift. Now he worries about her being properly chaparoned. I feel he now he is having thoughts about her and realizes other men will as well.

It’s sad because she’s the closest in age to him so he is likely closer to her than to some of the others and yet she consistently burns him with snide remarks all because she is so jealous she cannot do the same because she’s a woman. Yes, the patriarchy sucks and Eloise has a reason to be angry about it, but not at the expense of your brother girl. Damn.

I know I am late to this video and probably no one will read this, but I wanted to take a shot at deciphering that indescribable look on Colin’s face in the carriage scene, when Pen caresses his cheek and hair. I’m going to call it “ecstasy” and (yup, I have thought about this scene waaaay too much) I’d theorize it’s composed of: a rush of sexual arousal; an enormous surge of adrenaline, as Colin has in the last two seconds experienced a seismic shift from despair (“We are friends”) to the fulfillment of his wildest dreams (literally); and finally, the overwhelming joy and RELIEF of a starving man confronting a banquet. As this analysis so beautifully describes, Colin has desperately sought not just approval but appreciation, real recognition of his value, that precious moment of being taken seriously. Nicola Coughlin’s expression is not merely loving and appreciative, but REVERENT (quick cut to the wedding sequence: “With my body, I thee worship”). We, and Colin, read in her face that she ADORES him. In the space of a few heartbeats, Colin’s world has been turned on its head from misery to profound physical delight and emotional fulfillment-ecstasy! The definition of “ecstasy” includes a component of trance-like absorption (as in religiously-inspired ecstasy), and the moment of frozen, open-mouthed intensity Luke Newton gives us captures that perfectly. Anyway, that’s what I see and I’ve enjoyed unpacking the joy this sequence sparked in me. And again, the performances of both actors are just. so. damn. good. Luke Newton’s facial expressiveness is revelatory. As a not-actor, I would love to know how much, if any, of this facial and body language communication is conscious and deliberate by the actors, or whether performative talent just allows this to emerge organically from the actor’s immersion in the character and scene. Ms. Bates and other commenters, if anyone ever does read this who has acting experience, I would love to hear a professional speak more on this question and their own process. Thanks for coming to my TED talk and love to this creator and my fellow fans.

That's the last thing Penelope would want to do, specially when she was so much enamored by Colin at that time. Any other discussion between them was later disrupted by Marina. But we saw how he didn't listen to being let down delicately. He was sure he knew what was real love and Marina played with his romantic side well to suit her goal.

This analysis is perfection. I think you’re seeing his sex/intimacy refusal exactly as the writers want us to see it. I wished for some dialogue from him “I just got you and it feels like I lost you” in reckoning WD reveal. He clearly was grieving. I didn’t code it as trauma response initially but you nailed it. I think they could have downplayed the jealousy angle a bit… as Colin is not immature. His insecurity leads to desperation for feeling safe and secure again asap (get out of the danger) which he singularly pursues his role as protector and provider. I think jealous was the smallest emotion he felt toward Pen/WD. The writers could have smoothed that out better for a more authentic Colin. I also wish he would have gotten a line when Pen said “what’s holding you back from kissing me” and he said “I don’t know” ack! I think Colin would know… and I’m sure he would say something beautiful about loneliness and connection and trust and intimacy that also would have made Pen realize that she pushed him to this place. She of all people should understand and respect why Colin made those choices.

Even more interesting is when people dislike him for his declaration at the Butterfly Ball, when he basically says he'd be happy if his greatest purpose in life was her. This is how I felt about Colin since I started watching clips of Penelope and Colin's relationship on TH-cam. I then decided to watch all of the seasons and noticed how kind he truly is, but often overlooked. You were able to vocalize and express all the things I have felt about Colin, especially noticing how much hate he's been receiving. You noticed some of the most important points about Colin. The conversation he had with Violet was the most touching moment for me in season 3. The way she knew her son and wanted the best for him. I also liked the fact that you brought up the scene where he apologizes to Mondrich. This scene stood out to me because he doesn't only want to please his lovers, but everyone he cares about. You did such a beautiful job and you made my eyes watery. I don't think it's emphasize enough how fortunate it would be to have people around like Colin. Penelope fell in love with him because she knew exactly that he had a good heart. I laughed when Eloise mentioned the travels at first, but then it started bothering me how much she dismisses him.

Excellent analysis, I think Colin is somewhat misunderstood in the fandom but he has been my favorite character throughout the show and I was happy to see his progression in s3, at first I felt the show did him dirty by sort of making him the bad guy when it came to the LW reveal, but after thinking about it I realized I was only perceiving this through the fandom reaction, the show itself gave him valid reasons to be upset. Like for example, we can tell by the wedding he forgave Penelope for all the things she wrote and for lying to him, but the queen literally crashing his wedding and threating his family made him adamant about her need to stop publishing, he did not "flip flop" as some people put it, it's that perception of such present danger that made him unable to let it go. So yeah I think Colin has an interesting arc and it simply require the audience to be pay attention to the finer details.

I know people associate emotional labor with Benedict and while I agree, I feel people underestimate the emotional labor Colin has.
He feels deeply which adds to his empathy to people. He is constantly asking if there is something wrong when he sees his loved ones are upset. He is trying to listen to people, but he can’t read people’s minds.
It makes sense that he may misinterpret some things like in episode 5 when he thinks Penelope having a panic attack is about their engagement. I feel he offers her an out here because he feels like he rushed her and does not want her in a loveless marriage.
It hurt that she offered an annulment for the same reasons because he deeply loves her and as you said is worried she is going to leave him.
Violet explains that “he rarely puts himself first”. People misunderstand that his travels is the only time he puts himself first. His travels are more than just an escape. He doesn’t have to be what people want to be. He does not have to worry about what everyone is going through.
As soon as he comes back, he goes back to what Anthony expected him to be. He is comparing himself to his brothers which was a conflict in the book. He is making sure his family is taken care of.
Benedict shows his emotional labor in a different way and is often overlooked as well.
It feels like there is this cycle of insecurity and trauma that is being passed on and why each child struggles to find their purpose.

Just wondering, it was very obvious how Edmund's death affected Anthony as the 1st born, but how has it affected Colin & Benedict? Could his insecurity & hero complex be related to losing his father. Maybe as a middle son, this made him more sensitive/nurturing towards his younger siblings

@@KforFreedom for Edmund, I even see Gregory, even though he did not know his dad well, miss the idea of him.
Edmund is this symbol that hangs over everyone’s heads.
You see it more with the first four, but they idolize their parents’ love story and that becomes the basis on what they look for even if it is not practical which can have its positives or negatives.
As for Anthony, I feel he starts this new cycle of trauma. He puts pressure on daphne to get married to the point he doesn’t listen to her or trust her decisions or instincts.
With Benedict, he looks down on his art and can be very mean to him and I feel he was mean to half of his siblings.
With Colin, like Sammy said, he did not take him seriously, put ideas in his head that Colin should go to brothels and not have this silly sentiment.
Much of Anthony’s anger and grief comes from the loss of their father which may explain why he is hard and mean to his siblings, but doesn’t fully justify this.
His words take root and it hurts. He is the reason why Bendetict is lost and not happy. He is directionless once Bendetict found out he did not earn his place at art school because of Anthony, he loses it. While nice, it feels like it is too late considering how Anthony belittle and demeaned him in a way.
Again, Daphne almost had to marry an abusive man because of Anthony. And her feeling like she doesn’t have a voice, even with him set up some insecurities with her.
And with Colin, part of him having to be the man society wants him to be stemmed from Anthony’s words to him, especially after the announcement of his engagement with marina.

First, I don’t think the comments of him being young is not about how serious he is.
Him being young is that he doesn’t fully grasp between a crush and love. He hasn’t learned what goes into a marriage yet. He idolizes his parents’ relationship and he projects it onto his potential relationships.
I do agree that he is naive and what is sad is how the family keeps him and daphne as well as Eloise sheltered and naive. They only teach them when they are stuck in a corner and have to learn about people’s true intentions or what the world is really like.
Take it from someone who deals with it. Even as an adult, people see me as innocent and try to keep me that way. For example, when I ask about something “odd”, “i get oh you sweet innocent child”. That is what happens when people don’t want to teach me and only see me as naive and innocent.
I feel this happened with Colin and it makes sense why Colin travels to find himself and explore the world without people interfering. I like that his maturity comes finding things out himself.
And I feel him being friends with Penelope helped not only ground him, but allowed him to see himself in another person’s eyes. I don’t mean the rose tinted glasses, but finally someone sees the true him. And this continues in season 3.

I love how different Colin is from Anthony. Collin is the romantic, tender hearted, sensitive man who dreams of finding a soul mate and someone he can care for. He is the middle child, 3rd son, entertaining sweetheart but not relied upon. Anthony is pragmatic, domineering, and burdened by responsibilities of being a first born. His sexuality is his release and comfort. Until his relationship with Kate, he has used women for his own stress relief (Sienna) or to fulfill obligation to marry (Edwina). He is repulsed by romance because of being traumatized by the death of his father and grief of his mother. His declarations to Kate are often laced with anger and violence. He is a living, breathing red flag of pent up rage and control issues. Colin has issues as well with self pity and insecurity but due to his nature, the audience is confident his love for Penelope will help him overcome his hurt. Of the two, Colin is the healthiest.

Brilliant analysis. I thoroughly enjoyed watching this. It also points out well the great acting by Luke Newton, his ability to talk through his eyes, make use of micro expressions to tell a whole story, command of body language and voice. He created a very authentic character with Colin. Hope he gets swamped with good roles now, would love to see a whole range of different characters being portrayed by him.

I don’t understand why some people say that Colin’s character wasn’t well-developed in terms of personality and that the narrative didn’t help in understanding him, when all of this is easy to detect by paying attention to his gestures, words, and actions. I suppose some people need a character to say, "Oh, Colin is an insecure man with a hero complex, etc" to understand. In fact, Anthony, Violet, Marina, Daphne and even Pen/LW describe Colin in their dialogues at several moments. So, thank you for this beautiful analysis and video. I love Colin, and he is my favorite along with Penelope.

I never really disliked Colin this season. I thought he was portrayed beautifully by Luke Newton this season. I never thought his reactions didn't make sense. I'm mainly disappointed that we didn't see Polin have more moments post LW reveal. I wish there was more Colin and Pen happy and free with nothing holding them back. That's mostly my gripe with how I think Polin got robbed for their season.

Literally the best bridgerton. He’s emotionally available. I loved Anthony in season 2 as well but the way he spoke to Daphne in some scenes didn’t sit well with me and I kept thinking… I wish they’d make him a bit more emotionally connected to his family, but then I understood his trauma and why he suppressed emotions ❤️

I've noticed everything you said about Colin, and I've always thought he was such a beautiful character and a relatable one as well that's the beauty of season 3 for me ,the main characters start off with not fully accepting or knowing themselves fully which is something you experience in your 20s especially with characteristics of kindness, sensitivity and not being considered cool just because you don't want to live a meaningless or purposeless life so watching Penelope and Colin Trying to navigate those challenges gives me the courage to stay my " uncool" , sensitive and kind self and I will find what I'm looking for. Luke Newton is such a gifted actor🩵

I love love love this deep dive into Colin’s persona. His character deserves this attention and I think it’s sad he doesn’t get much screen time even in his own season.
I guess I’m frustrated about how they make him fail to solve anything at every turn especially when it comes to him facing Cressida’s blackmailing Penelope. The writers of the show couldn’t offer him a dignified performance in that scene where he begs Cressida for mercy towards his wife.
I dislike it because it’s very dissimilar to his book character where he actually does something special and worthy for Penelope in public. Let him win for once man.
Him standing up for Pen against Portia may have been the only thing they afforded him this entire show.
Nevertheless I love how Luke Newton portrays him so beautifully throughout the series. The emotions shown through his eyes were incredible.

  • @cidk59

I absolutely loved your analysis of Colin. I feel like you really unearthed the heart of his character. It always made me uncomfortable to watch him be so disregarded by his family, it was heart breaking because of his sensitive and sweet nature. Do you find it ironic, that even though Colin is a part of the family that Pen has longed to belong to, thinking they are the perfect family in comparison to hers who disregard and diminish her - that they are actually mirrors of one another? They are both wise beyond their years, both have been disregarded and are the objects of ridicule by their families, both are kind and empathetic and have been forced to hide in the shadows - just in different ways. In the same way they have both provided each other with a deep sense of home, connection, courage and confidence without realizing they do so. Also, do you think that the sibling who is Colins polar opposite is Eloise? She is so oblivious to the feelings of others, so locked into herself and what she wants, to the utter disregard of the harm she might cause to those around her. She can keep secrets from Pen, but is unforgiving and spiteful when Pen has kept a secret from her, a secret that she deeply regretted and yet wasn't even allowed to explain. It's an interesting dynamic. Just gotta say.... Luke Newton and Nicola Coughlin are both amazing actors, they made season 3 so compelling, and their performances (especially Luke's) were so subtle and nuanced. The series will have a tough time beating this one!!!

Excellent analysis Sammy. I have to be honest, at first the character of Colin never caught my attention, but then the third season came and everything changed. For the first few episodes I was captivated by Penelope, how extremely beautiful she looked and what a good actress Nicola was portraying her. But as the series progressed (specifically starting with episode 2) I found myself totally fascinated by Colin and Luke's brilliant performance. As a person as "psychotic" as you, I was simply delighted and surprised by how well developed Colin was, every gesture, every look, every micro expression and the intensity with which he expressed his feelings made me fall in love with his character. It's incredible that with so little screen time, they gave us so much emotion. Although my hunger for Polin is still not filled, I am quite happy with what they gave us and I hope that at least in the fourth season they give us a little more of them because I love them so much.

Ultimately, I think the biggest problem is that S3 itself did more "saying" than "showing," and given that TV is a VISUAL media, that is not insignificant. With this video, I can see that S1 did this much more and he is literally a side character that season. As the lead in S3, they should've gone ham with it & given us even more examples & FLASHBACKS. Colin was primed as an interesting character in S1 & S2, and they really could've made him unquestionably **THE** best male character of the series to general audiences. We already know he is, but they could've more strongly vindicated us & him. Again, I love Polin so much I'll regularly rewatch S3 with glee!

Are these moments showcasing Colin's personality just to subtle for general audiences to pick up on? Is there something the show could have done better in the way they wrote Colin? Or is it that we, as society, are so unused to seeing this kind of romantic male lead?

It feels like everyone is watching a show I have never seen and coming up with the wildest takes about it that I could never find any sort of support for in the actual text. This is marvellously done!! The moment I literally started snapping my fingers was when you said the thing about "I marvel at how one can feel such intimacy but also such great distance" being the crux of the issue for Colin. That is EXACTLY what part I have been directing people to when they say wild shit about Colin. Thank you so much for this omg

The way people keep saying we were robbed of Polin, we didn’t have enough scenes with them. Guys do we remember season 2 we barely got any happy moments of Kanthony. We got atmost 2 intense love confessions from both the seasons 1 and 2 but the amount of time Colin has genuinely expressed his love for Penelope is amusing.
And there were two major intimate scenes of Polin this season and honestly I consider to be the best out of the entire series not because I am biased against Polin but because the quality of Intimacy in season 3 was at par, it had care, it was gentle, it was sweet and it had CONSENT ( I mean I wouldn’t mind an angsty s3x lol) but the point is from their first kiss till their last after confession moment in the last episode it all held genuine meaning and I freaking love that. The reason I dislike season 1 is because it felt like their relationship had more lust than love.
I am not saying that season 3 is the greatest but it is not the worst at all. Honestly it is actually my favourite out of all the seasons.

Exactly . People have forgotten. We practically didn’t get anything with kanthony and I remember people were so upset. Edwina nearly marrying Anthony… Anthony was anti love even after the wedding scene, he went back to Edwina asking her to take him back No kanthony wedding, the sex scene was too angst and then one declaration,
The fandom was in shambles after season 2 was released. Thats why I wasn’t bothered with the hate lol
There are always gonna be haters when it’s a big television show involved . This was a very very very beautiful and romantic season

And I didn’t like season 1 as well. I feel like we got all we wanted this season. The romance, angst, gentleness, declarations, yearning and jealousy, sexiness. Carriage scene showed that polin can be super steamy if they wanted and mirror scene showed that they can be as gentle when necessary. The passion is out of the world. We had a beautiful wedding, you could see how much Colin loves her despite being the pending issue . We got everything

What else do we want. We will get their moment of embracing each other after marriage in season 4 ffs.
Yes the side plots like Mondrich’s and so many threesomes seemed a tad bit unnecessary but we can’t deny that it was a good season.

I will always like Colin and the video shows why there are devoted Polin despite not agreeing with the flow the writers deals with season 3.
People never doubts Colin love for Pen. It was clear and evident as explained in this video. But seing Pen suffers from season 1 till season 3 then hearing the word entrapment is like a knife being squeezed in the audience heart. A "simple one liner verbal assurance" that he loves her might have soften the blow despite those hurtful words in the name of being honest with his feelings. That is what I am struggling with above all else. He defended her with Portia and I know he is struggling but to use those exact words back to Pen is like a death sentence.
All others, I can let go. I just wished the writers would give them their HEA in season 4 with no drama like what they did this season with Kanthony no matter how short their screentime would be.

Great analysis. Colin has always been my favorite Bridgerton brother for various reasons. Overall, season 3 was great -- Polin's love story is so beautiful. My only gripe is that, even though it was completely fair for him to be as upset as he was over the LW reveal, there was no actual reconciliation between the two before the end. It would've helped the story move forward more flawlessly to have at least one more intimate Polin moment (not in the midst of a ball) showing that Colin truly forgave Penelope. His final declaration to her, was absolutely stunning though.

The fact that people have all of these critiques for Colin is crazy. He is like anyone who is young trying to figure themselves out. Sometimes we go through changes, being someone completely different. Someone we are not. Colin was sensitive for a man, so it makes sense he would have a false sense of bravado. He was trying to protect himself. Most women were not buying what he was selling before. They are young people after all. Not to mention Colin was Penelope's love of her life. It is very rare to get the person you have unrequited love for, and we are talking about years!! Regardless of flaws he was trying to do right by her. Most people we pine over ultimately never reciprocate feelings and you never get to be with them. EVER. Most people are not strong and have minimal boundaries when it comes to their specific person.
