Eh, seems more like a genuine attempt to reach out. I think we’re in the habit of reading condescension into everything a religious person says even when they’re not being condescending. No, it *was* condescending. The moral and intellectual superiority was all but dripping from his tongue. The letter is loaded with blithe assumptions about what obligations atheists uniquely have before, presumably, we can "earn" the right to be atheists, to mention the fact to anyone, or to criticize religion. It implies a lot of ignorance on atheists' parts while expressing ignorance about atheists.

Dunning-Kruger effect, in psychology, a cognitive bias whereby people with limited knowledge or competence in a given intellectual or social domain greatly overestimate their own knowledge or competence in that domain relative to objective criteria or to the performance of their peers or of people in general. According to the researchers for whom it is named, psychologists David Dunning and Justin Kruger, the effect is explained by the fact that the metacognitive ability to recognize deficiencies in one’s own knowledge or competence requires that one possess at least a minimum level of the same kind of knowledge or competence, which those who exhibit the effect have not attained. Because they are unaware of their deficiencies, such people generally assume that they are not deficient, in keeping with the tendency of most people to “choose what they think is the most reasonable and optimal option.”

edit: yeah it was a bit like that. the point: atheists claim they are very rational people, they only believe in facts and reason. however they dont have a better base for morality than what christians have. they accept their subjective experience of being and their personal identity as truth. they accept moral relativism and that other people have different ideas of what is good/bad, still they cling to what they think about the world and this determine their behavior. but it is a contradiction. you cannot say that "I want this world to be good for myself and everyone else" and that John Wayne Gacy's (the childkiller clown's) concept of good/bad is no different. u have to believe that your idea of good/bad is the real one. even if it is subjective, because otherwise the concept of good/bad becomes meaningless. but how can u decide whose subjective idea about morality is the correct one? there were attempts by people like Sam Harris to make objective ethics, which failed spectacularly. this is why i wrote that u cannot know, only make a belief that u are correct. so what i want to say, u can be an atheist but u will have to face with that there will be things which u have to believe and so there is not a big of a difference between yourselves and those theists u ridicule.
