  • This week, I found this video by a rather large channel, called Breaking in the Habit. In this video, Father Casey asks a question to Atheists with an open letter. Since it's always nice to get mail back, I thought I'd respond.
    At first, I thought it was a nice video, but on reflection, you can see how theists try to make people feel bad (even though it's subtle) for not believing in a deity. What do you think?
    The Original Video can be seen here - • An Open Letter to Athe...

    Everything in this video is just an opinion, and should be treated as such - though it is important to ask questions. Any humour or sarcasm is aimed towards the words and actions of the individuals, and not intended to be a personal attack on any individual themselves, under the act of free speech

      @@scambammer6102 Historically speaking, agnosticism is a term that was forged by an atheist (T.H. Huxley), to describe his atheist position (his view being that it was impossible to *know* whether God was actually existent or non-existent), and delineate how and why he felt compelled to forge a new term to describe it. This was not so much because he was somehow not an atheist per se, he was most certainly an unbeliever when it comes to deities.
      No, he did that because he was tired of having to explain how and why his position was not about positively claiming 'there are no gods', as was continuously repeated by theists who had basically the monopoly on controlling how religious terms were used by people back then (i.e. the doxa had primacy over any differing view), including the word atheist.

      Whatever, language does not work this way. Check some dictionaries (including those aimed at experts), most use the definition that atheism is the belief that no god exists. Many also list your definition, but that just shows that you have to check your terms.
      Just explain what you mean, and go from there.

    I'd have stopped at "Are you a good atheist?" to point out the question is meaningless. Atheism isn't a religion or belief system with standards atheists must fulfill to be considered a member in good standing. I know Casey first diverts to a "Are you a good person?" line of questioning, as it that's all he meant. But soon enough he brings in a list of things that he-- as a Catholic priest-- feels is essential to being a "good atheist". It's pretty disingenuous.
    Then he tacitly talks up how he thinks atheists owe it to Catholics to be what he defines a "good atheist" to help priests like Casey sharpen up their apologetics tactics. He fails to get-- or duplicitously pretends to not to get-- that arguments aren't evidence, and what most atheists are looking for is evidence, and no "question" is going to persuade atheists to convert to Catholicism.
    In a related vein, it's fascinating to me how many apologists and missionaries seem to think they can go from a hypothesized First Cause straight to "therefore everything in my preferred faith tradition is right" without any intervening logical steps.

    I've seen Father Casey's video on a couple other channels but this is the first time something popped out at me. "Morality of adherence", the softer side of the "obedience or death" doctrine that Christianity employed when it had control of governments and could enforce imprisonment or execution for apostates.
    "It is our faith that informs us when we do these things...." Funny how your faith didn't stop you from doing these things. rather it was when secular bodies held you accountable that you were "informed" of your horrific acts.
    "People articulating our beliefs in the best way we know how" Then he goes on to include Ratzinger in this list. SO apparently being a Nazi Pope who actively worked to hide pedophile priests from justice is an example of Catholic beliefs.
    The not so passive aggressive dig on Protestant denominations and the "not overly accusatory" line clearly demonstrates what kind of douchebag Casey actually is.

    • @lnsflare1
      @lnsflare1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In all fairness, for all his other crimes, Ratzinger was 14 at the time and German law mandated that all 14 year olds enroll in the Hitler Youth, and then he was drafted into the infantry while at seminary two years later and apparently deserted two years after that. His family were apparently not Nazi sympathizers and the Nazis allegedly had a cousin of his who had Down's Syndrome euthanized.

    Every response you made to Casey Cole’s seemingly earnest entreaties is very much on point. But how did the youthful friar imagine he could slip in a very cheap shot against Richard Dawkins and expect to be taken seriously? It’s also very telling, that like Robert Barron (another highly visible Catholic apologist TH-camr), Casey Cole never actually takes the high road of “steel-manning” the arguments of those sceptics and non-believers, such as Epicurus and David Hume, who have enduringly influenced our thinking and helped us move toward expanding horizons. Instead both priests, somewhat cartoonishly, invoke Marx, Feuerbach, Nietzsche and Heidegger(?!), as the ‘atheists’ they are confronting so nobly. (Heidegger is, to say the least, a very curious choice to place in the tradition of sceptical non-belief)

    This is what I will never get with the "faithful" to be honest with everyone. Is that they will continue to try and reconvert anyone that obviously didn't want to have anything to do with them or their religion. My response to this is just a plain old answer of "why does my atheism even matter to you and your God, Father?" I grew up in a religious family here in the Philippines so I'm quite acquainted with the Church, Youth Orgs, and Charismatic groups. When I was around 6 or 7 years old, I would be taken to worship services and the standard Sunday morning worship and finishing up those services without feeling a damn thing after. The faithful will say that they something in some before, during, and after the service and I don't. Not only I feel left out but also made me feel like I'm a bad person because I somehow felt that I never gained god's favor. As I grew, I became an agnostic and eventually became an atheist. My reasoning, religion on its own is like political factions, so many organizations, all claiming to be the one true religion and everyone else is irrelevant. So I decided to not follow any as it's troublesome. Anyway, great content! Subbed!

As an atheist that is active in the atheist community, I think most atheist's already hold themselves to a high moral standard. However, I support his message to the community. We need a reminder every once in a while. I agree with what he said.

    Excellent video. I'm still trying to grasp the logic of the theists who say that their infallible scriptures can be correctly explained to humanity by fallible humans. • @valentin_bunin_vfx

      There is a part in scripture, where a person, and later a group of persons, are given the authority from God to make infallible statements. If the scripture is infallible, then this group of people is infallible, too (at least in some cases).
      So no, it wouldn't be more logical.

    • @TimH-pu2dd
      @TimH-pu2dd 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@valentin_bunin_vfx Even if hypothetically there is a god, and that god authorizes some people to speak on its behalf, there is still the matter of the individuals with fallible minds having to assess whether the teaching they are receiving is coming through an "authorized" source. It would stlil be a guessing game based on personal feelings--which are not always trustworthy.

    • @valentin_bunin_vfx
      @valentin_bunin_vfx 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TimH-pu2dd You are right actually. There are debates on whether the papacy should even exist and on other dogmatic topics. Though it doesn't mean that this or that statement made by this infallible people is wrong or fallible. There is a possibility of making an infallible statement, and moreover, this statement would be infallible because it is based on infallible scripture, not by accident. Although because of the other people are fallible, they cannot make a 100% proof of the source is being infallible, even if the source is really so. That's why we have so many churches. People cannot make a 100% proof a their church is truly the one, so they have no other option but to believe in one of them, or not to believe at all.
      My first comment was more about the possibility of existence of such statements made by people.

  • @sussekind9717

    I was confused at first, he formulated his question wrong, when he asked if we were a good one (atheist).
    What he meant to ask (at least, I hope), was are you an atheist, that is a good person? Are you an atheist, that is a moral person?
    I say this because, these are the two terms he almost immediately switches to thereafter.
    First of all, "good" and "moral" are subjective terms. They depend on the individual.
    In which case, I do not understand why he would even inserted the word atheist.
    Atheism/theism only has to do with the non-belief/belief in supernatural deities, full stop. It has absolutely nothing to do with being "good" or "bad", "morality", or anything else, for that matter.
    As a former Catholic myself, here's my advice to you, my young priest. As a Catholic in your position, I wouldn't worry so much about what atheists are doing, and how moral they're being about it. Instead, I would worry more about cleaning up your own house. Because spring cleaning is way overdue, and man, is there some stench that needs to be aired out right there.

    • @Wolf-ln1ml
      @Wolf-ln1ml ปีที่แล้ว

      He _started_ with that, but switched to "good" meaning "have you done your due diligence so can call yourself a 'good atheist' by my standards, i.e. have you spent a couple of lifetimes reading everything I demand you read?"

    I'm Catholic and I had a feeling that there would be videos about this letter. I found the letter to be thought-provoking in away. But I do see the flaws that some atheist youtubers point out with this. Honestly, the question should be "Are you a good person?". But I did like your video, keep up the good work.

    And then to follow up, does their body refer to the child’s body inside them or their own body?
