Donizetti: La Favorite O mon Fernand Jamie Barton, mezzosoprano Members of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra Patrick Summers Richard Tucker Gala Avery Fischer Hall NYC, 11.XI.2012
Stunning voice, artistry and a voice that thrills! How exciting! I love her tone and all the colours she generously shares and yet such a brilliance and power, controlled beautifully... goose bumps
I was fortunate enough to have studied vocal pedagogy under a professor who wrote his own book and studied under William Vennard---I learned much----I have listened to Ms. Barton several times I can find absolutely nothing vocally improper---What a voice she has!!! One of my favorite composers is Donizetti and I have this opera with Ms. Fiorenza Cossotto---It is wonderful---
She won the first round of Cardiff Singer of the World tonight, and from this video, there is no disputing that. BRAVA! And TOI TOI TOI in the competition.
As great as this is, and as much as I love her, nothing prepared me for how truly stunning she was in Houston in the full opera. She OWNED the house and she knew it. I pray La Favorite is revived for this truly extraordinary artist. She is one of the greats.
Very impressive and just a beautiful sound ... Finally a Mezzo that is able to sing just beautiful rather than machine like... you are just amazing! :)
This is wonderful, she has a terrific voice and just seems to have an amazing resource of technique and musicianship, the expression and emotion are anchored in the sense and phrasing of the music. A truly engaging performer with a wonderful voice....
Well ,Jamie won the competition in Cardiff-of course. It seemed the whole auditorium was saluting her when they stood and sang the Welsh National Anthem .It was a very well deserved win.Congratulations from Anglesey,my dear.
ME too! In two weeks! I love that she mentions that the opera is never staged. Well Jamie, when an artist is as great as you are, a rarely heard opera is revived!
such power, precision and tone is wonderful.I haven't heard any others in the Cardiff Singer of the World competition, but I don't need to.This lady cannot be bettered and has a great operatic career ahead of her.
Incredible voice and technique. Unbelievable lows, middles and highs with an amazing approach to the breath and the forward sound. God bless your voice and yourself MS Barton🙏🏼❤️
I totally agree that Ms. Barton is on the road to greater things---"La Favorita" by Donizzeti is superb for her voice---the voice is flawless and reminds me of Ms. Agnes Baltsa and Marilyn Horne intertwined---there is unity of the dark and light side of the "timbre" of the voice---I am in total admiration for her impressive abilities I look forward to seeing what this superb singer has in store for us---
Wow, wow, wow!!! Absolutely beautiful! I have just now 'discovered' her and I am immediately a fan! She has a timbre that I find similar to that of Marilyn Horne, especially in the lower register. Brava!!
Mister Opera If you think that’s “guttural timbre” then good luck with your teaching🤣 Maybe you approach to Ms Barton and maybe she accepts to become your student🤔
Ole Nielson Reminds me sometimes of Marilyn Horne (though her diction is better) and sometimes of Stephanie Blythe though her singing is totally personal.
She sounds and looks stunning! I saw her in recital in person and it was breathtaking. She is an amazing artists and singer, and incredibly down to earth as well. The real deal!
I wish Jamie all the best in the Cardiff competition! She deserves to win. Unfortunately, four of the nine judges are not singers. Out of those four, three aren't even musicians...AT ALL! Sadly, this has been the rule rather than the exception in vocal competitions for as long as I can remember. Why, I don't know, but it needs to change. Does this happen w/instrumentalists too?
The first time I saw this years ago I was so shook by her whole entire body language and range when she hit that high note it changed me. I would die to train with her! I want to be her.
Faultless interpretation, making donizetti engaging isn’t always easy! 🤣. Jamie Barton is the kind of universal vocal example to all young singers to up their game 🔥
Sadly, TH-cam won't allow us to post links here, but I am presently listening to Jamie, the winner of Concert One, singing 'L'ai-je bien entendu?…O mon Fernand'. On BBC website. I am getting regular emailed updates with links to song clips.
Sure! I'm in the US and its a PAIN to try to listen to the competition. I've been all over the web looking for updates lol. Just wish it was more accessible!
Absolutely not. This is a French Opera, composed by Donizetti for Paris, on a French libretto by Royer and Vaëz. It was translated in Italian a couple of years later.
It's not just that she was propperly trained. There are plenty of properly trained singers that couldn't act their way out of a paper bag. It's been less of a problem since Callas woke up the opera community to the fact that it's theatre but there are still singers (especially at recital venues) who just stand there and sing without bothering.

Such vocal colour and vocal artistry. Simply thrilling and glorious to hear.

Wow. So much power, and with good clarity 👍🏻
I love how Maestro Summers conducts certain sections with a flowing motion. It's just pretty to watch.
Beautiful singing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

bloody hell, Jamie! Fantastic!!!! Didn't think anyone could come close to Elina for me but you're breathtaking!!!!!
vidmania2011 better than Elina.
Elina has horrible chest voice, she’s a soprano with no high notes, not a mezzo.
AMAZING! I LOVE YOU JAMIE BARTON!
This is wonderful, she has a terrific voice and just seems to have an amazing resource of technique and musicianship, the expression and emotion are anchored in the sense and phrasing of the music. A truly engaging performer with a wonderful voice....

Vocally and dramatically she knows what she is doing.
She has the same tamber too her voice as Marilyn Horne. Very good Mezzo bravo.
An incredible artist! I am so looking forward to her singing this role with Houston Grand Opera during the 2019-2020 season.
Me too. I will be there.
ME too! In two weeks! I love that she mentions that the opera is never staged. Well Jamie, when an artist is as great as you are, a rarely heard opera is revived!
finally a singer with a steady tone and no tremolos or wobbling! Brava! true Bel canto!
such power, precision and tone is wonderful.I haven't heard any others in the Cardiff Singer of the World competition, but I don't need to.This lady cannot be bettered and has a great operatic career ahead of her.

Never have heard about her ... till NOW! What a surprise!
Goodness gracious!!! Just knocked out - and I don't even like opera...!
Who next sung Verdi in this video?
Damn! That rocked the rafters in the best possible way!!!
Definitely first cast material, and I hope to see/read more of it.

Yes, I have thought at times that she reminds me a little of Marilyn Horne, which is very good.
Mister Opera

Did she shake or break things? Hurt your ears?
OMGosh! You rock, Ms. Barton! I've got goosebumps!
What a magnificent voice and she looked like she was enjoying it so much. So relaxed. WOW!
I wish Jamie all the best in the Cardiff competition! She deserves to win.

She ate Fernand.
Bingo! She nailed it with a top C!
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
HER FENENA IN "NABUCCO" IS THE ONLY DECENT SOLOIST ON STAGE. THE OTHER SOLOISTS WERE DISMAL ESPECIALLY THE BASS.
Голос великолепный настоящее меццо сопрано!! Блестяще браво!!!
Wow!! Hair stood up on my neck. Hope to see more of her in future.
Herrliche Stimme aus attraktiver Körperfülle ‼️👍❤️
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Didn’t quite work out for her, did it. Too bad; she started well.
Et mangé beaucoup se e burger aussi
The first time I saw this years ago I was so shook by her whole entire body language and range when she hit that high note it changed me. I would die to train with her! I want to be her.
In person ?
Yes! She really is the next great mezzo of our time as people below said. I am so looking forward to hearing more from her.
WOW. JUST. WOW!
the successor of Merylin Horne!!!!!!!!!1
She is quite unique...no need for compare her with others!
With more finesse in phrasing, by eliminating the constant forte tones, she should be
able to establish herself as a Mezzo of quality.
You obviously were not listening when she exhibited the delicious diminuendo.
Waw
I enjoyed every note!
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Faultless interpretation, making donizetti engaging isn’t always easy! 🤣. Jamie Barton is the kind of universal vocal example to all young singers to up their game 🔥
tremenda mujer,no lo digo por su tamano sino por su voz
Wow what a voice and technique! Amazing mezzo!
Bravissima
Imagine how she will ace Amneris/Eboli many years down the road!
Beautiful voice. Chest voice so rich and powerful and sweet in head voice also.

😍😍😍
brilliant - both technically and in terms of interpretation. Bravo! :)
I'm smitten ! I just purchased her "All Who Wander" . Wonderful
Sorry, simply "No". Great volume and potential, wrong teaching. And, by the way, the recording is in distortion...
check out 06:17, coloratur pitches from a mezzo-soprano! phewww!
I simply don't agree. Her production is perfect for her voice.
Great!!!!!!!!!!! Wonderful!!!!!!!!
God! I love her already!
Beautiful! In Moscow it was amasing
Brava!!!
Close your eyes and hear Marilyn Horne.
Nick Malinowski no, Horne is way too nasal for any good.

Forced a little on the high note, probably due to nerves and fear, but otherwise, wonderful!
