- Here’s a preview of Chris Harris testing the mind-bending, physics-altering, kidney-busting Volkswagen I.D. R - the new prototype racer from VW that set the hillclimb record at Goodwood - and the Nürburgring EV lap record - last summer.
And to demonstrate just how fast it is, Harris races it against the (not slow) McLaren 720s.

Andy Power yes. IDR is 4WD on race slicks. 720S on P Zero or Corsas. Both being normal road tyres.
Tyres make shit all difference to the mclaren. It isn't traction limited and it got comprehensively wrecked...as you'd expect. The trap speed difference at the end would have told the most revealing story, had they shown it

Not really what one would call normal tyres on the McLaren and the other one is far from "unlimited", but yeah, it's still a road legal car vs a race car...

@@Ambergoo532 hahahah exactly lol. Its impressive yes but its also a silly toy. You could get and beat that performance if you unregulated F1 cars completely too. They would only need to do 13 miles so would need something like 5 litres of fuel and a more powerful engine.
And it wouldnt be a soul-less machine.

Even though it is a pretty impressive toy, it’s still slower on the Nordschleife than a modified Porsche 919 hybrid and a mere 6 seconds quicker than the old school Porsche 956 record of 1983! Which, as you pointed out would lose a two lap race to. I’m not a big fan of electric vehicles in general, too limiting (range) too slow (after factoring in recharge time for a 400 mile + drive and in total probably less beneficial to the environment (after all factors are considered... where are all those spent lithium batteries gonna go?)
@@Ambergoo532 good point, I don't think electric cars will suddenly take off in countries that have long distances to cover and the infrastructure needed to recharge is not readily available will make the ICE a more viable proposition. Plus there is the life span of a lithium battery compared to that of a petrol / diesel engine, maybe 8 - 10 years life before battery needs replacing. If they can get them to do a longer range, say 800 - 1000 km before recharge, and the recharge takes about 10 minutes, and the battery life is extended to 15 years (with a warranty).... Then I would look at one.

It will get rekt. And remember, the 919 Evo was not clean sheet, imagine what Porsche could do with that car with a modern Can Am approach to the engine and aero. 2500+ hp for 1 lap and exhaust/fan blown aero

Shadowboost I don’t think so. The ID.R has a huge advantage on shorter courses because it won’t have to worry about range, like they did on the Nurburgring. Also the top speeds would be slower. On a shorter course, the two would probably be very close. The ID.R could even win.

With that kind of acceleration you need down force to keep the car to ground so you need big wings
the design/aerodynamics/feel/power is just on another level , i didn't expected volkwagen to build a monster like this
Well in all fairness, the host is greatly over-exaggerating the speed/performance of the I.D.R.
It's the fastest EV, but not even close to the LMP1 class of race cars which abide by regulations(24h/Le Mans).
And that's before even considering a Formula 1 car, which also abides by strict rules to slow it down.
Flowmasta Flam EV has a lot of potential to improve on. One day electric race cars will smoke gasoline powered ones I believe.

True but it also highlight something about the "Story of EV's" that gets missed.
They do pollute, not from exhaust but in other manners. Battery construction is a rather controversial one but it is a massive concern, but then thing that remains in agreement... even with that, you end with a vehicle that has much less of a carbon footprint than an ICE vehicle, at the point of constructing the components onward.

That 720S was still impressive in the race. Despite being a road car it kept up pretty well with the track only race spec car. I don't how the 720S achieve that kind of acceleration with only rear wheel drive.

Only got the record because F1 cars arent allowed to do the hillclimp. Last official time a F1 car did on the hillclimp is from 1999 and is only 1.7sec slower than this. So a 21 year old F1 only 1.7 sec slower

Wasn't really a fair test. Street car street tires vs race car race tires. Why not run it against a race 720s on race rubber? Because it's not the "image" VW is trying to portray. The emissions scandal really hurt them.

IDR is almost 2 years old now, it set a new Pikes Peak record in June 2018 with Romain Dumas as the driver.

@Angel That's more of a Super Saloon or more appropriate, A Super Wagon. We need a 2 door coupe that has the same design philosophy of VW or have Porsche make an electric variant of the Porsche 911 with the same e-motors from the Taycan
Angel not one VW employee worked on the Taycan. Just because Porsche falls under the VW umbrella doesn’t make it a VW.
@@arlynbaladad9008 It will not change much, the Taycan is heavy because of the batteries not so much because it is a bit roomier than a 911. An all electric 911 might even end up with a higher center of gravity due to lees space to keep the batteries low.

On a Nordschleife it started a lap doing 260 km/h on straights. At the end of the lap it went about 240. Batterries...
The funny thing is that the IDR wasn't even built for racetracks. It's a purpose built Pike's peak machine.
