If I had one Euro every time someone claimed a car is "FASTER THAN AN F1 CAR" I could buy the Williams team and make them world champions again.
If there were no rules F1 cars would be much faster. This car has aerodynamics that are forbidden in F1. Also this car drives 12 miles and needs a refuel. So unless a race is like 7 laps...
@@wybren I won't believe the ID R is faster than a normal F1 even with the strict rules until a direct comparison of lap times proves me wrong. I mean, even the 919 Evo Spa lap record was broken in 2018 F1 qualifying (despite rain in Q3, they might have gone even quicker).
Of course a no-regulation F1 car could be even faster, but the fact that Porsche barely managed it with the 919 Evo shows how damn fast even normal F1 cars are. I just think it's funny how some videos claim to feature a car that would beat an F1 car, even if that's either not the case or not really settled yet.

Well they didn't follow any racing regulations at all and the F1 cars do, so I guess that is cheating? :D
Does you promise all the way from prospecting mines to the decompose ens of everything on it, how does mining rare earth metalls and other needed minerals affect the envoirement, and what leaks when it crashes and burns är knows that firefighters usual protection equipment wasn't up to the task to protect the firefighters from the gases of burning batteries and those batteries that caught fire either had an explosive blasting fire or it is shielded in s way that makes it nearly impossible to put out the fire that then goes on to burn inside the batteries for close to 24 hours.
Pollution is about more than what comes out of the exhaustpipes, but of course if we manage all the others stages to make a clean chain of production stages electric cars are much cleaner to drive if the rised demands for electricity is meet with a clean production goal for that electricity.
But I don't think the kombination engine is going away totally it's rather going to search for cleaner fuels than petrol and diesel and if that is found there is a chance that it gives the electric car a match för the money, if and when it becomes a less vulnerable supply chain than the electric grid can provide in some areas, I emergency situation natural catastrophies, manmade catastrophies or wars makes a heavily centralized and automated electricity supplychain very vulnerable that we must hope our leaders don't neglect and walk straight into without considerations of the future mailfunctions, to little deepth in the discussion before taking decissions may be sweet today and crowdpleasing but if a event happens and those happy crowdes becomes heavily affected that can change pretty fast when desperation comes into play.
There should be racing class without rules, only then have major innovation, unlike f1 with banning so many tech that innovations slows down.

The reason why F1 cars Had to be regulated so much was the Power - especially from the 3.5litre Turbos - was getting to far in front of Tyres and Brakes technology.
People often forget that Stopping an F1 car is one of the most important factors in constant speed and Handling - which is The most Important Factor. Therefore you need Excellent Aero, Brakes and the Tyres to Complement each other perfectly.
After that, it's strap on the most Reliable & Economic Fast Powerplant and Go Racing.
Engines developed for F1 do make their way into Road cars, but the reliance is on Cost, Usability & Reliability!
F1 cut costs by changing Engine size to 1.5litres, which is bang in the middle of the 1.0L & 2.0L engines bought by the majority of Fleet Buyers - including all the Car Hire Co.s, Driving Schools etc - (Taxis still the domain of Diesel engines !) And Private Car buyers. Most of who - bizarrely enough! - want Reliability, Economy, Room inside and then Performance. That's why there are more Ford Focus 1.4 - 1.6 litre engine cars sold than Focus ST.s or any mix of Gti.s, SRi.s, WRXs etc Most new cars are bought by Families. Most families that have 2 cars will have 1 New & 1 Most Reliable, Safe and Economic to Own & Run 2nd car.
So where are the attributes of F1 cars to be used ?
Safety for 1 - ABS braking for example. Fuel Injection for Economy or Power.
But in the last 5 years it's the big increases in HP to CC. Simply put, look at how many cars from All major manufacturers have gone to 3 cylinder, sub 1.5litres engines with Superchargers & even pairing with Turbos, mixed with EM systems that are close to Magical - which put together into a Car that are 15 - 30kgs heavier in Safety Equipment than Cars they are replacing !
Top of my head says a:
1.4L 4cyl fi.VW Polo* with about 90hp & 40mpg (RW !) is easily beaten by 1.0L 3cyl, 100hp tsi. getting 48+mpg And is probably €1200 cheaper in Real terms !
(* just as an example - I don't have real figures to hand, but am extrapolating from a lot of Facts & Stats from helping my daughters buy best VFM cars over the last 15yrs or so - & that was taking "It has to be Cute!" into consideration !!)
So. NO FLAT OUT 250mph! F1 Cars in Any Future. I've been watching F1 since the 1970's, through 6 wheel Tyrrells, to "Ground Effect" (that was a Mad Time! Read about it! ) to 3.5L Turbo 'Monsters' - which just shredded Tyres.
They were 'limited' to Top-out @ 185mph. A lot of the Track & Lap Records were set then, but even with No Turbos & smaller Engines, Aerodynamics & Tyre Tech meant the last 90's & the new 2000's were periods of watching fantastic Drivers blowing away Track & Lap Records year on year.
And even though I have less interest now in F1 - I've switched allegiance fully to BTCC & ETCC, as I think that Sport is closer to the ethos of the F1 I grew up with & it's much easier to follow on TV. than in it's halcyon days of the early 70's, when a Local Car Dealership could afford to run a Team !
Anyways, hope that helped a bit to explain - to my eyes - the benefits we don't see, but do get, from F1 Tech.

There’s very few tracks in the world you’d have to go faster than 167 mph for an significant length of time. Pikes peak is definitely not one of them. It was built to do one job, and it does that job better than anything. It also smashed the good wood festival of speed record last year

@@rubenbraekman4515 That and they would've limited the motors to run at a set RPM. Rimac is currently looking at 18,000RPM for their electric motors for the 2_C(C_2?) so gearing isn't the main limiting factor but is still a factor nonetheless.

I'm a 80's racing guy. F1 was at it's peak.. Rally was at it's peak.. Very little restrictions and they could almost do whatever they wanted. But.. BUT.. This is the future. As much as I love hearing those huge turbos spin up, this is insane.
I'm pretty sure those are just the electric motors, it doesn't have a gas engine, thus no turbos. I'm pretty sure... I could be wrong.

Its a very impressive bit of kit but don't lie to people, it just isn't as fast an an F1 car. It has less down force, less power and is heavier.

100% accurate, the claims it's faster than an F1 car come from from it beating the 1998 Mclaren F1 car at the Goodwood hill climb, things have come a long way in F1 since then, This car would be lucky to be within 10 seconds a lap at almost any F1 track.

@@azzifyy5988 True, the problem to add with goodwood is that F1 cars needs a crazy high ride height to clear the unheaveness redering their flat floor inefficient (wich represent 2/3 of the total downforce of an F1 car)

In all fairness VW was forced by rule of law to spend $2-billion on EV tech. Of course, it also earmarked at least another other $28-billion to spend between 2020 and 2024 to develop new EV and hybrid models.
It's gonna be glorious when all this jazz of electricity crashes and burns. I feel like this is all part of some plan for companies to go under in a few years.

no, 20 yrs ago, the F1 cars were really at their fastest with the V10's. So, in no way is this thing faster, other then that its AWD and can do 0-60 faster (allegedly).
TBF, the F1 car was on hard cold tires, and it was just a good effort drive by the driver. The IDR drive was a full blown factory effort. They even removed half of the batteries to make the car lighter for the short run up goodwood. There is no chance that a modern F1 car would be slower

F1 cars are designed to go fastest around a track. This car can go faster 0-60 but that is pretty much it. F1 has better brakes, cornering speed, well everything really.
Like he said on video, 0-120 in 5 seconds, I believe F1 can do 0-125 under 4.5 seconds.

I’ve purchased an electric bicycle a year ago for commuting. After the first ride I looked back at my motorbike. It looked old, dirty, ancient and feels like a technology from the previous era. I’m sold on electric and as soon as batteries get better and e-motorcycles cheaper I’m getting one. Electric is what combustion was to a steam engine and it feels exactly like this.

@jon doe Are you being serious ? Chris Harris is better than the old 3 put together. He is far more knowledgeable and a far better driver. He should of been on Top Gear years and years ago. His own stuff was already better than the car reviews on TG with the old 3. They was good for comedic value, that's about it.

The one thing I wish you'd done would have been to film a Fifth Gear-style track shoot-out comparison so that we could have watched the 720S and the IDR both cornering at their respective max speed from an overhead drone's perspective! The drag race with the IDR winning by a full second was certainly very impressive but I would still like to have had some way of visually comparing their cornering abilities

Saw this VW I.D. R live streaming on the Goodwood Festival of Speed break the hill climb run world record on its first try. It was surreal an electric car beating all of the ICE race cars (F1, Le Mans, etc.) & highly modified hyper/super cars. I have no doubt the I.D. R would beat the Pikes Peak world record too. If the batteries can last the entire run. Since this car has almost unlimited amount of torque instantly available.
The Goodwood record doesn't mean anything, modern F1 cars aren't allowed to go full speed there. Yes it is faster than an F1 car, but just faster than a 1999 F1 car, which means nothing nowadays.

I'd like to see how close this would be against the drag times 720S that ran high 8 seconds runs. I know one is a drag build and the other is a circuit racer...but the fact that you can buy that 720S and actually build it to be that fast and still drive it on the road is very interesting.

Very interested to see how high end racing pushes the development of new battery tech. Current electrics are very practical for urban/suburban driving, but all that intense stress on lithium-ion tech in racing really degrades the battery. Hopefully solutions that become quickly necessary to cars like these once they realize how long the battery lifetime is will trickle down to consumer EVs and give us better battery health after more years of charging and discharging
Its waiting for the Lithium-Thorium batteries. Heard of these 20-25 years ago so I guess they are too good to become available to the public. 5 minutes of charge, drive a week...

Just imagine. A racing series with no performance rules where brands make things like this. Theres a drivers and constructors championship, but to spice it up, drivers swap teams every race to prove which one has the most speed at any given car, and what car is fast no matter who drives it. Salaries are standard and paid evenly by all teams, and every team gets the same bonus no matter what position they get. It would be marvelous, get sponsors in like crazy and show what both drivers and brands can do without limits.

We need a neutral car where we get each of the top racers from F1 & F2 to make a comparison lap around a circuit once a year. This could be the car for that.
Would help with all the speculation about who is the best driver. Obviously it wouldn't factor in all of the benefits of setting up a car etc. but it would give a great natural speed comparison.

In a straight line, not at anything else. Audis corner so poorly it's comical (except the R8 which is really a Lambo) and even the Golf R understeers like crazy.

Honestly, I doubt it until I see a direct comparison with modern F1 cars.
The IDR built under the same regulations as the car it beat by 16 seconds. I think they claim no regulations but the Pikes Peak Unlimited class does have regulations.
