Love the themes of self-sacrifice in A Quiet Place: Day One. I also saw symbolism with water throughout the film. It reminded me of baptism and holy water. It made sense why the evil aliens can’t survive in it. I also realized that the barges at the end of the film are symbolic of the Catholic Church itself, which is sometimes called the “Barge of St Peter.” If you also view the post-apocalyptic setting as a kind of purgatory, it also brings a new light to the film. The cat I felt is a kind of guardian angel or guide like Virgil in Dante’s Divine Comedy, or a simple way of portraying God’s grace working even in tremendously evil times.
Correction: they used an eastern Orthodox church and not a catholic church. You can tell by how they used a sanctuary with an iconostasis instead of a tabernacle.
Great review. I saw the movie last night July 23. I got pretty excited when I heard the words the Virgin Mary and the beginning. I also really appreciated the Cathedral. At the moment, I’m not thinking of the character who you may feel mixed about…(but I’m sure it will hit me later)
