This movie is criminally slept on. I remember watching a couple times when it was in theaters. Honestly one of, if not my favorite, Tom cruise movie. Glad to hear they’re making a second one!
I'd love a Vrataski (Verdun) Prequel! This movie is why I don't watch trailers anymore. I went into Edge of Tomorrow knowing nothing about it, completely blind, I knew Tom Cruise was in it and that's all. It blew me away! Bought All You Need Is Kill to read a few days after. "I wish I didn't love it so much, but I do".
what's funny about this movie having a planned sequel that's yet to happen is that the author of All You Need is Kill said back in 2014 that he was working on a sequel and that also has yet to actually happen.

Truly, I feel like so many people didn’t watch any marketing for this movie and were pleasantly surprised by the time loop shananigans, tho for me it almost feels like a fever dream lol
It's frustrating because on one hand, if there's insufficient marketing, nobody will know to see the movie, but on the other hand, more often than not the marketing will either spoil the movie entirely, overhype it (working as intended, I gue$$?) , or completely misrepresents what the film is.
I saw this movie for the first time recently and I thought it was an interesting take on the time travel/alien genre. I originally theorized that everything was taking place in some sort of video game and that the Mimics are aware of that, and that Tom Cruise is made aware of that when he kills the Alpha. But then the movie provides a different explanation that I thought was equally thought-provoking. These Mimics can perceive time as a dimension that they can control, like they've evolved over millions of years to tap into spacetime and manipulate it to ensure that their world-conquering plans succeed. I personally don't see how this could get a sequel because the ending makes it hard unless another Mimic hive-mind just crashes on earth again, and this would be risky because the sequel would just seem like a cut-and-dry retelling of the first one. But if a sequel does get made, I'll still watch it.
My dad and I saw this in theaters, loved it, then after it released from theaters, we proceeded to digitally rented it for home viewing on 5 separate occasions over the next few years.
I saw this movie without knowing what it was, just picked a random movie for a date I was going on. Ended up loving it so much and being bummed about having to entertain a date to the point wherein I bought another ticket and went to go see it again by myself the next day. It's easily one of my favorite movies ever. My explanation of the ending is human biology can interface with their time travel triggering mechanism, but obviously we are not capable of the actual time travel mechanism the Omega does. So throughout the movie, he is dying and the Omega is triggering the reset. At the end of the movie, he blows up the Omega but its blood mixes with his as both are dying. The Omega initiates a restart in its dying moments, which puts him 24hrs prior to that (it moved the reset point to earlier than it is during most of the movie) but he is now the new Omega. Because our biology doesn't support the communication/neural link aspect of the aliens, all of the aliens now just aimlessly wander and are easily defeated as they have no entity controlling them. He "stole" the role of the Omega but cannot reset time himself and cannot control the aliens so he is sorta back to normal minus implications that his biology is altered in ways that may be exploitable by a sequel if they ever make one.
A small little correction: You said that the aliens saw time as a 5th dimension. This is kinda true, but its a bit weirder than that. We live in what is usually called a 3+1 universe. This means 3 spacial dimensions + 1 time dimension. The movie sort of implies that the aliens exist in a 3+2 universe and them interacting with us is just an "intersection" between our 1d time and their 2d time. A time loop would therefore just be a 2d circle filled in circle intersecting with a 1d line. Its not really looping across universes as much as it is traveling through time's second dimension. This sounds really confusing, but it really is just a filled in circle intersecting with like, a number line. So, when the movie ends, the loop ends because the 2d circle has stopped intersecting with their timeline. Why did I correct this? Well, I had to do a written paper in my field (physics) about unanswered questions. I foolishly chose string theory and time and it destroyed me. I need to use the information gained _somehow._ Also, string theory is bs, its just mathmaticians saying "We can do this thing!" Without it actually being proven that the math corresponds to anything. I hate it. Its dumb.
@cosmictreason2242 Oh! Sorry, to be clear, I am a physicist. This paper was for a physics class within my major. I wouldn't be comfortable correcting them if I were in some unrelated field. But also, the number of times I've tried to cite a paper, but realized their math was wrong is _faar_ higher than you'd like. It's really bad in theoretical physics, they'll mess up their math and come to a broad conclusion. Usually, it's in a lower tier of journal/publishing, but it's still awful. They'll have a PhD and mess up some derivative or integral or differentiation and just... it's not hard to have a calculator do it, man!
May be late, but I can explain the Time loop. In booth the Movie and Manga (To an extent) it's explained that the loop is just that. A loop. No extra timelines or alternate realities. When it resets to the beginning it just rewinds time. Just wanted to clarify that as now you have one less plot hole to think about.
Something tells me the original ending was scrapped because mega-star Tom Cruise had to be the one to save the day and no way he was letting that focus leave him, kind of like in the Mummy movie, however unlike the Mummy movie that NEEDED more to come from it this movie did not.
That was the major problem for me. I don't know if Tom Cruise wanted the limelight or the studio wanted him to have it. But when it became a 'Tom Cruise standard issue' movie, I lost interest.
Iirc, in the original manga the ending is a lot drearier. The best way to put it is in All you Need is Kill, the mimics essentially work in 2 phases, a "server" whose consciousness is emitted on death in a tachyon burst to start the loop reset, and an "antenna" to receive and perform the reset. In the manga, rita becomes an antenna after her server status is severed becoming paramount to the Cage's (or in the manga Keiji's) ability to loop reset. Additionally antennae get to keep their memories as well as a kind of backup. In the manga, to end the loops and their threat, Cage has to kill Rita as being one is passive and without one's control, so as long as she lives the mimics have a way to restart the loop. So only in the movie does he get the girl.
One of the rare occasions where a sci fi adaptation is done really well. I love re-watching this movie whenever I can because it mixes a good story with action. I had no idea it was based on an Anime though, great find!
Love this flick! Emily Blunt aka "Angel of Verdun" aka "Full Metal Bitch" is perfect for her role. Highly rewatchable. If you haven't seen it yet, make it your next movie. It does not need a sequel. If one is made I hope there's passion and love behind it and not a cash grab.
Love this movie. You hit on one of the concepts that I really love. When Rita shoots Cage each time to reset the day, I assume that the day continues for her until she dies on the beach. This sets up one of the most emotionally impactful beats of the film later when we realize that she barely knows Cage because this is her first time through the loop but he loves her. That suddenly clicks for her and she kisses him.
This is totally the video for me even though I didn't think this movie needed a sequel or franchise. I absolutely love this film and was satisfied with its ending, I didn't need more. That being said I'm interested to see what they do with this sequel.

No movie is perfect, and time loop ones can have all manner of problems with them. I've seen many of these kinds of loop movies, and EOT stands out as my favourite. Yes, there are holes here and there, but overall it's a nice solid movie I can re-watch, since it's emotional tone and action are sufficiently well-written that even after 10 or 15 re-watches, I still get a lot of enjoyment from the movie. The cast are all well-suited to their parts, with the likes of Kimmel and Griff feeling very grounded and "plausible" support characters. Bill Paxton does well until he devolves into that "frightened child" thing on the battlefield, which is something I think demeans and ruins his character. Other than that, I think Bill seemed to enjoy his role as Master Sergeant Farrell. 😀
My favorite is the fact that when the first Alpha dies it’s in slow motion and the only slow motion shot in the film. I believe that’s to showcase the transfer the time loop from the mimics to Cage.

I got the impression that when he killed the Omega, because he was covered in it's blood, he got the Omegas powers. Thats why he woke up in the helicopter. Just my impression, great video as well bud 👍
Super under--rated movie! I loved watching it so much I ended up reading the manga it was originally based on, then a translation of the novel. The changes they made to the story for adapting were fascinating (for example, their mechanic friend was a woman, and there was a side plot with a female nurse love interest in the OG version). But the film is a solid blockbuster and really narrows down to the core two characters while having comedy to balance out the grimness and action sequences. The time loop aspect is also very well written and feels cohesive. Good stuff.
One of the coolest parts of the movie, is in the end you realize he actually earned his rank without anyone but her realizing what he had accomplished.
I went into cinema, and randomly decided to watch it, without knowing anything about it. It was amazing, top 5 sci-fi movies ever for me. Not sure if a want a sequel, since it was near perfect
This is one of my favorite sci-fi movies. It's sad that it didn't do well in theaters. The marketing played a big part in that. I didn't see it in theaters even though this kind of movie is exactly the kind I like seeing in theaters. Regardless, I'm glad to see others appreciate it as well. I'm all for a sequel. I think there could still be some more story to tell.
I wrote a sequel to Edge of Tomorrow that involved the entire movie happening during and alongside the first film. Basically, it involves other people that got blue goo on them and kept reliving the same day and their contributions to helping winning the war. Cruise was only a side background character in my version and that allowed the sequel to be made soon without having to worry about Cruise’s work schedule.
Yeah its crazy that this movie has almost got made so many times but Tom Cruise's schedule gets too busy, Emily Blunt's schedule gets too busy or even the director Doug Limon's schedule gets too busy like two people out of three could be ready to make this movie but all it takes is one of them to be like sorry I'm not ready yet Lol . seriously at this point you would think they would just give up by this point 😂

Good stuff.
The worst thing that could happen is that a sequel is made, and it's called Edge of 2Morrow.

I love edge of tomorrow. Always have such a good movie.
One of the coolest parts of the movie, is in the end you realize he actually earned his rank without anyone but her realizing what he had accomplished.
Edge Of Tomorrow is one of the best time travel movies ever. It’s also on of Cruise’s. For me it runs 1 and 2 with The Source Code. I really love it.
This movie rocks; one of his best, and totally underrated.
I’m not even a big Tom Cruise fan but I really like this movie and I’ve watched it about 20 times
Awesome movie, and awesome book. Would love to see a sequel
Adjustment Bureau is sick as Fuck also!!
I'm definitely going to see it in the theater. First one was really good
I went into cinema, and randomly decided to watch it, without knowing anything about it. It was amazing, top 5 sci-fi movies ever for me. Not sure if a want a sequel, since it was near perfect
Awesome movie!!! I love it and would love to see a sequel. Just do it already
‼️‼️ My all time favourite ‼️‼️
Cruise movie
I am trained in combat. Still freaked me out.
I love this movie and is always a rewatch. One major reason for me is a PS3 game I loved playing. It has RESISTANCE FALL OF MAN vibes.
It's a great movie, I watch it everytime it comes on.
One of the best movies I watched.
This war of the worlds and oblivion are my 3 favs of Tom Cruise
Really loved this movie and never understood why it was so hated, I think its one of the better sci fi movies out there and really deserves a sequel.
I watched this movie blind with my GF, didn't see any trailer or plot synopsis.
Was a wonderful experience
This movie is underrated as hell and deserves a sequel
This and oblivion are really underrated, top movies
I wrote a sequel to Edge of Tomorrow that involved the entire movie happening during and alongside the first film. Basically, it involves other people that got blue goo on them and kept reliving the same day and their contributions to helping winning the war. Cruise was only a side background character in my version and that allowed the sequel to be made soon without having to worry about Cruise’s work schedule.
