For anyone who's interested, here's a synopsis of the Marmonts' story below and a list of all their bs that I could remember, along with some tidbits I noticed (It's a long one, so don't click unless you're ready to scroll a while): The Marmonts were once close but their relationship soured once they were both promoted to Co-heads of Research for the Lake House facility, and then it got worse in the years following the HQ lockdown in Control. In Jules' office, the wording of his promotion letter makes it sound like Diana was sole Head of Research first, but I'm not 100% on that. Their many spats and other notable events (that I recall) included: - Diana stole Jules' level 3 clearance card - Jules withheld manuscript pages from Diana to impede her research - Diana told her employees to ignore any requests/demands made by Jules after he poached one of her assistants - On most floors in the facility, portraits of the co-heads of research are displayed. On sublevel 4 however, (where Diana's office is) Jules' portrait is removed and placed next to a bench, facing the wall. - An employee complained about Jules for disregard of nut allergies. Jules responded by bringing in more pecan filled pies. Also, most of the vending machine items are things like trail mix, peanuts, pecans, almonds, So he was extremely petty about it. - Jules' poached one of Diana's senior research assistants and then reassigned her as a supply clerk. He thought she made a complaint about the pecan pies that were being eaten in the lobby to the facility administrator because she had a nut allergy. It was actually another employee, so she caught a stray for no reason. There's a chance I'm mixing a few characters here by mistake, so in short: Jules poached Diana's assistant, and also reassigned someone (the wrong person) to a supply room for complaining about pies. - Diana requested the use of live human subjects through Dr. Darling (The HQ head of research-- big boss of all the researchers in the Bureau) He said no, and decided to check up on them in person. Jules got upset with her over this because of the optics, but when HQ went dark, he was the first to kidnap Rudolph Lane for project Rhamnus. Diana focused on her ATDs (Automatic Typing Devices), but later followed suit and kidnapped Ed Booker, who was one of Saga's witnesses at the beginning of AW2. Lane and Booker occupied the two cells on the containment floor. - During Dr. Darling's visit, he referenced his research on Hedron resonance, which is what he used to create the HRAs (Hedron Resonance Amplifiers) in Control. Which protected bureau employees from the Hiss-- an interdimensional threat that corrupts people into violent monsters. - Jules kidnapped, drugged, and coerced Rudolph lane. Then pushed him into a deep depression, which eventually resulted in his suicide. He used his own blood to make one last painting on the wall of his cell-- you see an echo of it in the last iteration of the loop (spiral) on the level with Diana's ATDs. Jules was initially upset that he wouldn't get anymore paintings, but quickly had the entire wall with Lane's blood painting removed and transported to sublevel 5. He was ecstatic after discovering the paintings' readings were off the charts. It's worth mentioning that Rudolph hated BOTH Marmonts, so Diana may have had a hand in all of his suffering. He may have also hated her for being in an equal position of power, but doing nothing about his situation. Either way, his feelings were valid, they both suck. - Diana kidnapped Ed Booker, who's pretty oblivious. He was just brought to the facility by the time Estevez arrives, so he was still fresh and producing pages, under the belief that it was an immersive experience set up by his wife. Diana considered kidnapping his more successful wife, Tamitha, but I'm not sure why they only got Ed. She also considered inducing stress to adjust the results provided by subjects, but hesitated because of Lane's suicide, NOT because of ethical or moral reasons. After TOH (The Oldest House AKA HQ) went dark, the Marmonts threw ethics and morals out the window. - Ed Booker might've actually produced decent pages, but Diana didn't like that they were still focusing on her marriage. I guess she expected him to twist reality with Alan Wake's style alone, and didn't realize that the dark place needed a cohesive horror narrative. Funny enough, Ed seemed to understand that just fine since he stuck with Wake's narrative. - After Rudolph Lane killed himself and gave Jules a breakthrough painting, it's implied that Diana took revenge by tampering with the devices that amplified and recorded the threshold effects of Lane's final piece, resulting in the breach/lockdown. - It's implied that the only reason Rudolph Lane's paintings were producing results, was because Alan Wake wrote it to be so. - The symbol on the door to Dylan's "Panopticon" after pulling the light switch was seen in Control when visiting the Oceanview Motel. In Control, you can only use the door with the inverted pyramid symbol, which lead you back to TOH. Assuming that the other doors lead to other dimensions, Dylan's mind seems to be in another one separate from his body. He says "I think that's where I am" in reference to HQ when speaking to Estevez. The wording of that seems disconnected to where Estevez and Dylan were speaking currently, and I don't know of a reason why Dylan would physically be outside of the oldest house. Dylan's mind being in another dimension somewhat explains why Jesse couldn't find a way to clear the Hiss out of it during Control, and presumably for the last four years. - To add to Dylan's dimensional displacement-- one of the symbols in the Oceanview Motel is a spiral; The symbol references the dark place, and is also outside of Alan's writing room. It's also a major theme of AW2 ("It's not a loop, it's a spiral"). The Oceanview Motel appears in the dark place as the Oceanview Hotel during AW2. Because of this I believe every door in the Oceanview Motel leads to another dimension, and in every dimension there is a parallel Oceanview location. Not a new or uncommon thought in the fanbase. If anyone actually read through this, tell me what I missed! I'm crazy for the lore and probably forgot/misremembered some of this.
Sidenote: I hope you play Firebreak FBC from Remedy when it comes out soon. It should continue whats going on in the lockdown in the oldest house. its a multiplayer shooter like cod zombies, looks like a blast.
