By greasy you mean sloppy I guess? Isn't most of that sloppiness due to him being drunk in most of the worst moments he had though? Isn't he pretty clean when he is sober and focuses on playing? What do you think? I mean even Page would get better on tour over time and strangely was a much better acoustic player than electric one. When he plays black mountain side he plays blistering fast and much cleaner than his cleanest electrical solos. Why is that though? Acoustic guitar is much harder to play. I still can't figure out why and I wished someone would ask him that question.

I met slash in 96 when he was touring on the snake pit 1st album. Already my hero at the time. He he stood outside the his bus and talked to me for over a hour about music and the Gnr touring days and literally every question and topic i could get him to talk about. Never acted like dick or was to busy , wasnt in a rush to get on the bus. Maybe i caught him on a good night or what ever. Just saying it was a treat to actually meet him and hang out for real and not a hi bye sort of interaction. Take it for whats its worth, he played live with no backing tracks even forgot a few parts of his own songs, and messed up knocking on heaven door and had to change guitars mid song.( BTW snakepit is a waaay better album than the mish mash thats 2010 self titled0

I remember GnR before ‘appetite destruction’ released. Guns N’ Roses didn’t play gazzaries or whisky (least I don’t remember it). They played hardcore underground.
It's kind of important to remember when Slash hit, it was the end of the 80s, the Era of Eddie Van Halen, Steve Vai and Yngwie Malmsteen, Slash was a throwback to The Stones, The Faces and 70s playing. Before Slash hit nobody was playing a Les Paul, Edward had nearly put Gibson out of business with the birth of the superstrat. His style wasn't as intimidating as a player like Randy Rhoads or Paul Gilbert, but, it was trickier than it sounded... How many times have you heard someone mess up that Sweet child riff? I reat my case. What determines the street cred of a player.. is it guitar dexterity or having 100,000 people singing along to every guitar part in a south American soccer stadium? He's inspired millions to play, he has riffs that have endured for almost 40 years... How many can say that.

I am sick and tired of people bashing guitarists. There are so many different styles and they are all good. How boring would music be if everyone played like Joe Satriani?
The irony is that Satriani’s playing couldn’t be less interesting to me and Slash was the main reason I picked up guitar. Not only are there so many styles that are all good and valid, there are so many tastes. Like I recognize that Satriani is an absolute beast, I just don’t care to listen to his work lol.
I think some people only seem respect players when they can’t play their stuff. They learn a Guns’n’Roses song (because it’s a great song) and then, because they managed to learn it, start saying Slash is crap. It’s childish. People who will never produce anything of note in music disrespecting someone who has produced an incredible amount of memorable riffs and solos because he doesn’t use enough weird scales or sweep picking.

I like Slashes tone and playing. Like Robert says not polished like so many are doing today. He comes from a old school of playing but with his own tweaks, turns ,ideas . He is just good at what he does. He is recognized from his tone, style and the hat Alice Cooper gave him. Oh and his Les Paul and Marshall. Those 2 were made for each other.

Slash was a refreshing change from all of the shredders who sounded the same in the 1980s. He could play fast, but there was something there that referenced the past too. So many musicians are considered great because of what they brought to the table at a certain time. They should be understood in that context, whether or not you enjoy it. Clapton is a great example of this. He was a huge influence on guitarists, and yet so many present day guitar players hate on him.
The big issue with guitar players is too many of them worry about how technical something is and don't pay attention to how good it sounds and how fun is it play.
Saying Slash is overrated is lazy. Sure he's not the most innovative rock hero we've seen but he is f%¤ing good at what he does. Everything he plays works with the tune he is playing to. Love a lot of his solo stuff, although the latest one is a bit too old school bluesy and not enough rock for my liking.

That guy is a living legend. One of the last guitar heroes. I learned almost 20 of his songs...what a trip: a riff machine, solos everywhere, smart melodic solutions. No way I could say anything against him. He's a master.
There was some conan obrien sketch a while back where he's playing guitar and the guitar style changes. I knew from the first note that the joke was that it was actually Slash behind the curtain playing. I knew it before the punchline came just from the first note. I can sing the sweet child of mine solo note for note and so can a lot of people who don't even play guitar. I don't think Slash is the best guitarist ever or anything, and neither does he, but those two facts I just laid out definitely make him an amazing guitarist.
Slash is one of the best rock guitarists ever because he plays what the song demands, not jerking off or just playing what is cool to guitarists (particularly in his prime, these days he tends to shred too much live imo). Also, his licks are just so incredibly recognizable, groovy, bluesy and aggressive. Go listen to the isolated slash guitars on welcome to the jungle, you’ll appreciate his playing way more. Everything just suits the song so perfectly.
Anyone who says Slash isn’t that good must be speaking about technique only… even tho his technique is really good. He is one of the only guitarists so instantly identifiable. He’s made some of rocks most identifiable riffs and licks, he plays them with a feel that is just superb, and of course he lives and breathes rock n roll. Haters are insane. What’s the obsession with technique? Shouldn’t it be much more important that a song sounds good and it’s actually rememberable vs how many notes you can play in a second, different scales you use, or cords you know? When most players were tapping and divebombing on pointy guitars, Slash was playing bluesy and filthy on a big ole Lp neck. His loose, Page-y phrasing was such a breath of fresh air in the late ‘80s
I think slash is very underrated still even. When you listen to appetite for destruction, listen to how well him and izzy stradlin write there riffs togehter. A lot of the time theyre doing different things and its so expressive. Then slash's solos are incredible melodies and just passionate. The 80's really got watered down with all the melodic shredders and stuff like that towards the end of the 80's. Slahs's style was a breathe of fresh air and energy, swagger, groove, shred that was needed at that point. Dirty rock 'n roll and fast and punky at times from duff mckagen's influence of punk. Then his image is legendary, and that just adds to his legacy, and then all the stories and all that too. Great stuff.
I've gained immense admiration for Slash the last few years. When he released the Snakepit album "Ain't Life Grand" I was blown away. Then a few years back I watched the Slash and the Conspirators live in Sydney Australia video and was hooked ever since. He's more than an image, he's the real deal.

I am absolutely no Slash "hater" - he has his moments, but mostly I just don't feel him. Couple of days ago I heard Lukather live - that is someone I feel. By the way - same with Bonnamassa, I do not feel him. He is playing great, but ... 5 minutes listening to SRV and this guy really touches me. They all are great musicians and at the end - as always in those things - it is just a matter of personal taste. M2C

Man how can someone say that Slash is bad guitarist. His song-writing is something unbelievable. His songs from SMKC, from OOTD, from Snakepit, from GNR, it's something really awesome. I must say that nobody has done something like that. Only Slash. For me he is famous by the reason. And in my opinion he is best guitarist in the world. He can improvise so fast, so clean, so good. His solos are heart-touching. He can write in any genre. Okey not metal but in my opinion Hard Rock, Rock, Blues are more musical than Metal. I love metal. I do metal, i listen to metal. But I like Hard Rock more. And I know so many guitarists. And for me Slash is best. And he is humble too. I love him so much and it's not always about fast playing. Its really not. Song should have soul. Song should not be fast car. Slash knows what he is doing and he is doing it best. Really. In GNR and SMKC he does Hard Rock. That riff confused my brain and both hands. As a beginner still, it was tough for me to get under my fingers. But once muscle memory kicked in, I can play it easily now.

Don’t know how Slash can have a lot of haters. For a guy that came from almost nothing busted his a$$ to learn guitar at a young age and turn his life from an average kid to something many of could only dream of, people should praise his desire to get somewhere in life. He’s been to more places we could ever dream, play in front of thousands, meet many people from different cultures etc. I would say that if you believe in yourself like he did, you can make your dreams come true. I saw guns at giants stadium when the filmed the paradise city video. They were a kick a$$ band and glad I was able to see the original lineup. Not many can say that. I applaud Slash for what he’s become. Kudos to him.
Allot of people are jealous of his success, he does not have the technical perfection style like Paul Gilbert, Vai or Goven, but he is a very artistic inventive clever guitarist.
I feel like people who hate on Slash are focused solely on chops and don't seem to have any real musical appreciation. There are plenty of players that can shred all over the place, but there are far fewer that can actually build the melodic riffs and phrases Slash seems to create so effortlessly. Truly one of the greats IMO.
I can think of a ton of shred guitar players and virtuosos that can play ridiculous things most of us never will, but none of them write anything memorable.
@A-xb1gf Not even just bedroom shredders, world class shredders. How many actual legendary songs do guys like Vai, Satriani, and Malmsteen have to their names? Very very few. Slash has more in one album than these guys have in a career. Years ago I saw Satriani open for Dream Theater and Petrucci played him out of the building.

It’s his solo/riff composition on SO many beloved songs, something that’s been lost among guitarists of today where they want their guitar heroes to sound like the musical interpretation of the Pythagorean theorem(which is fine, there’s space for that too). The guy is fucking musical… it’s MUSIC.
He may not be that great player in technical terms and virtuosity. But he's veeeery great in terms of composition, feel, and art form and that's what really matters the most. I forgot who said this next quote but it goes something like this "I'd rather hear one that make me feel something, than to hear 1000 note that makes me feel none"

When I hear people talking about whether they think guitarists are overrated or whatever, I've just learned over the years to shut down on it. I used to engage in all that incessant babel, but I realize that it comes from everyone’s varying tastes. I’m going to like bands and guitarists that you may or may not hate, so there’s really no wrong answer. You may hate 'Poison',... but I bet you sing-along to “Every Rose” or “Nothing But A Good Time” before you catch yourself doing it and look around to see if anybody saw you just before you say,..."Fn Poison suuucks!” I’ve known tons of people who used to be right beside me at concerts, thrashing out to a band, only to hear them a couple years later telling me how much they hated and never once loved them. They were the ones that showed me how to play some of the solo notes I know today, because they were the ones who figured them out and taught them to me…Lolol The point is that you can say anything you want about Slash, but there would have never been these huge iconic songs like “Welcome to the Jungle, Sweet Child, Paradise City, etc." and so many others we all know and love, without him. I don't think I have ever met anyone who didn't like at least one of those three songs. I guess I’ve just tried to adopt a philosophy where, "If I don’t like it, but I know, thousands of others do, let them enjoy it in peace." I have had moments that made me wonder why, in the living hell, someone would like a particular song because I thought it sucked so bad, but then there's this huge group of people up rocking out to it. It makes me want to pull my hair out, ears off, and stab drillbits in it! I have never been a huge Zeppelin fan… I know, I know, and I’ve caught hell over the years. (LOL) Same with Skynard. I cannot stand Rush. I can’t stand G. Lee’s voice; it's just never been the type of music I’m into, even though Neil Peart is/was one of the baddest ass drummers I’ve ever heard, but I would rather listen to Tommy Lee play drums because it’s more my style. And I know you guys would line up all day long to argue with that, but that’s fine because it’s about preference! You go and enjoy what you love, and I'll do the same. Screaming at me and telling me that the music I like sucks isn't going to dissuade me from listening to it. @@NintenDubI’m a fan of slash but I think that is a fair point to an extent. AFD is classic album but the other GNR record is not so great, a few standout songs and solos. I do like his playing on the first snakepit album from 1995. I think at that time he had a very cool dirty blues sound with a touch of 80s rock with his legato but I am not a huge fan of those songs and that singer. I’m not sure he’s really overrated because I mostly hear guitarists in comment sections saying he’s not that great. Maybe it’s just because he’s more popular in general and is a well known guy and has all those signature models. He’s kind of brand almost. I like his playing style from the 90s. But his style is quite basic compared to tons of shedders out there, although to be fair most of said players have probably never even had hit songs. Malmstein is a mind blowing player but no one knows who he is aside from players and his music is not really very good unless you’re just all about the guitar

He isn’t one of the shred stunt guys BUT he is a fantastic song writer and BAND guitarist…. Page and Richard’s don’t shred….they don’t do 220bpm or polyphia but they have made more money than any shred guy ever…because they write songs that appeal to the soul and make you feel better after hearing them. Isn’t that what we do this for? For people to respond?
I feel like a lot of the criticism of Slash stems from his early days when him (and GnR) were just completely wasted all the time. Some of his performances back then were not very flattering. I saw him a few years ago with Miles Kennedy and the Conspirators and it was the best guitar sound I’ve ever heard.
My biggest "problem" with Slash is that he has become sort of his own caricature. Same look, same posing (with or without guitar), same licks for more than 20 years.

Slash has my respect, however, I have never quite forgiven him for butchering "Hey Joe" solo at the Rock n Roll HOF. I was so hyped for him playing with Mitch Mitchell and Billy Cox, but then Slash butchered the solo imo haha. Other than that, the man has his place in history, can't hate him for that.
I've never thought Slash was anything but a good competent guitarist. He's not a god or an idol, nor is he the "greatest ever", or anything like that ,which sounds more like fan-club PR, than real musical appreciation. I don't want to be thought to be "damning with faint praise," but to over-rate him is just as bad as dismissing his work out of hand. Sadly we live in a time of intense and fast gratification, asked to like ir dislike someone or something because it suits marketing gurus to polarise identity opinions for their own benefit. Slash is, as is Don Felder, and Isn Moss (of Cold Chisel), and maybe Keith Scott , Brian May, and even George Harrison, well fitted for the songs they solo in, and the right kind of approach,and personality, for their respective bands. Any of them would be good wherever they played, but most would never have been heard of without the popular success of the songs their band turned out. If it weren't for the success of Guns and Roses, no one would be talking about Slash's guitar playing, whereas maybe someone like Eric Clapton or Jeff Beck would be notable even without a particular band setting. This doesn't make them any better than someone adapted especially for the group they were in,... it just means they have a slightly different musical goal or task.
I have no idea what you're on about, but I feel like you're trying to convince people that he's good through a technical aspect. Technically, he's not even on par with most 12 year olds these days. What makes Slash so good is the way he's able to express emotion with every note he plays and make his audience feel something. It's not WHAT he's playing, it's HOW he's playing it. Slash has more soul and feel in his left nut than most people can even fathom. That's what makes him so fucking good. It has nothing to do with 7ths and minor bullshit penatonics or whatever the fuck. Music is an art. It's not a sport or a science (Listen to "Aint it Fun" by GnR and you -might- see what I mean)

Was never a Guns 'n' Roses fan, at all, and was never a Slash fan. Not saying he's not good, just don't care for his style, and definitely not his tone. I didn't like anything that came along after Slash (end of late 70's and 80's rock era) either... the so-called "alternative" or the so-called "Nu-Rock" scenes and all others similar. Hey, not my thing... and only my opinion!
I think with Slash and in extension of course GnR, it's similar to bands like AC/DC or even Stones. Everyone says their stuff is so easy and the guitar players are bad because they can't shred or something like that. But then you rarely ever see someone actually playing those songs well. Like, people can play the notes but it rarely sounds as it is supposed to. Simple stuff still has to be played well, it has to groove the right way. AC/DC is definitely the prime example here imo. If it's so easy, why does it sound wrong when you play it, and not when they do? Because difficulty isn't always about playing fast and complex.
Yes yes yes in terms of technical proficiency/mastery, slash is not up there, mediocre at best. BUT, in terms of persona/presence, widely recognized riffs, music composing, rock n roll swagger, he is definitely among the GOATS

I love Slash, but I don't love his playing. Same goes for SRV for me. I don't like the fast "shreddy" stuff. His solo on knocking on heavens door, that's what I love.
Slash totally got my respect in 1988 on Appetite ... eventhough I kept asking myself who wrote the song : Slash or Izzy ? Well the prominent guitar is usually played by Slash so I guess he wrote the songs , more or less, ... of course not the lyrics
I never really dug Slash or GnR, but I would never say he isn't good. He is an intuitive player much like Pagey but lacks the technical understanding. Some people are jealous of players who just jam and really don't know the music theory behind it.
I think of what he is doing there as Dorian with the major 6 and b7. BB tended to not use a 7 at all. Also, when I first learned this song years ago, I played the B note on 4th string 9th fret (instead of open B string). Don't know if that is right or not but it does have more of a percussive sound.
Since pairing with MK Slash sells himself under value. Saw Slash live on the tour a few month ago and MK seemed bored and spoiled the show with repetitive rock star gestures and lack of ambition. OOTD is a well produced album btw.
Slash is great with some legendary licks and solos. The issue I have is his live performances, where he isn’t able to do justice to his songs. I am not sure of the early GnR days but stuff I can find are mostly let downs. Sure there are a couple of nice concerts but majority is not meeting the quality of recordings. Many bands play stuff differently live but still hit the needed level, his ones don’t. Great to learn pentatonic licks from though, great inside the box player.
Why do guys care? Can Petrucci, Satriani, or Van run circles around Slash? Probably. Slash is much closer to them, than we are to him. And, all those riffs you heard on the GnR records and tried to learn? He came up with them in the creative process. We are merely trying to replicate them.
i think the gap between gnr stardom and slash's guitar on it's own is why folks think he's not a blow your mind type of player. outside of gnr and izzy song writing he never really grew or did anything that made any one really care about his musical direction. don't agree? facts are the facts, snake pit, revolver...yawn,.....i think i just dozed off
He might not be the most skillful guitarist. He's got his own unique style and tone which are beloved, studied, and imitated. He's the legend of rock. He's the reason I started playing guitar and buying Gibsons.

By greasy you mean sloppy I guess? Isn't most of that sloppiness due to him being drunk in most of the worst moments he had though? Isn't he pretty clean when he is sober and focuses on playing? What do you think? I mean even Page would get better on tour over time and strangely was a much better acoustic player than electric one. When he plays black mountain side he plays blistering fast and much cleaner than his cleanest electrical solos. Why is that though? Acoustic guitar is much harder to play. I still can't figure out why and I wished someone would ask him that question.

I met slash in 96 when he was touring on the snake pit 1st album. Already my hero at the time. He he stood outside the his bus and talked to me for over a hour about music and the Gnr touring days and literally every question and topic i could get him to talk about. Never acted like dick or was to busy , wasnt in a rush to get on the bus. Maybe i caught him on a good night or what ever. Just saying it was a treat to actually meet him and hang out for real and not a hi bye sort of interaction. Take it for whats its worth, he played live with no backing tracks even forgot a few parts of his own songs, and messed up knocking on heaven door and had to change guitars mid song.( BTW snakepit is a waaay better album than the mish mash thats 2010 self titled0

That’s a very cool story. I had seen him in some personal interviews on TH-cam not by your typical reporters and he seems like the most down to earth guy not your typical celebrity a hole. It’s cool to know people like Slash don’t forget their roots and how they were brought up and raised. You were lucky to have been able to chat as long as you did. I remember GnR before ‘appetite destruction’ released. Guns N’ Roses didn’t play gazzaries or whisky (least I don’t remember it). They played hardcore underground.
It's kind of important to remember when Slash hit, it was the end of the 80s, the Era of Eddie Van Halen, Steve Vai and Yngwie Malmsteen, Slash was a throwback to The Stones, The Faces and 70s playing. Before Slash hit nobody was playing a Les Paul, Edward had nearly put Gibson out of business with the birth of the superstrat. His style wasn't as intimidating as a player like Randy Rhoads or Paul Gilbert, but, it was trickier than it sounded... How many times have you heard someone mess up that Sweet child riff? I reat my case. What determines the street cred of a player.. is it guitar dexterity or having 100,000 people singing along to every guitar part in a south American soccer stadium? He's inspired millions to play, he has riffs that have endured for almost 40 years... How many can say that.

The irony is that Satriani’s playing couldn’t be less interesting to me and Slash was the main reason I picked up guitar. Not only are there so many styles that are all good and valid, there are so many tastes. Like I recognize that Satriani is an absolute beast, I just don’t care to listen to his work lol.

I like Slashes tone and playing. Like Robert says not polished like so many are doing today. He comes from a old school of playing but with his own tweaks, turns ,ideas . He is just good at what he does. He is recognized from his tone, style and the hat Alice Cooper gave him. Oh and his Les Paul and Marshall. Those 2 were made for each other.

Yngwies rising force is a great album. He has probably 2 or 3 great ones. The rest are just the same, and sure he's deuchey but so is slash
Slash was a refreshing change from all of the shredders who sounded the same in the 1980s. He could play fast, but there was something there that referenced the past too. So many musicians are considered great because of what they brought to the table at a certain time. They should be understood in that context, whether or not you enjoy it. Clapton is a great example of this. He was a huge influence on guitarists, and yet so many present day guitar players hate on him.
The big issue with guitar players is too many of them worry about how technical something is and don't pay attention to how good it sounds and how fun is it play.
What could people have against Slash's playing? It's tasteful, extremely melodic, and just the right amount of notes.
Saying Slash is overrated is lazy. Sure he's not the most innovative rock hero we've seen but he is f%¤ing good at what he does. Everything he plays works with the tune he is playing to. Love a lot of his solo stuff, although the latest one is a bit too old school bluesy and not enough rock for my liking.

That guy is a living legend. One of the last guitar heroes. I learned almost 20 of his songs...what a trip: a riff machine, solos everywhere, smart melodic solutions. No way I could say anything against him. He's a master.
There was some conan obrien sketch a while back where he's playing guitar and the guitar style changes. I knew from the first note that the joke was that it was actually Slash behind the curtain playing. I knew it before the punchline came just from the first note. I can sing the sweet child of mine solo note for note and so can a lot of people who don't even play guitar. I don't think Slash is the best guitarist ever or anything, and neither does he, but those two facts I just laid out definitely make him an amazing guitarist.
Slash is one of the best rock guitarists ever because he plays what the song demands, not jerking off or just playing what is cool to guitarists (particularly in his prime, these days he tends to shred too much live imo).
Also, his licks are just so incredibly recognizable, groovy, bluesy and aggressive. Go listen to the isolated slash guitars on welcome to the jungle, you’ll appreciate his playing way more. Everything just suits the song so perfectly.

When most players were tapping and divebombing on pointy guitars, Slash was playing bluesy and filthy on a big ole Lp neck. His loose, Page-y phrasing was such a breath of fresh air in the late ‘80s

I think slash is very underrated still even. When you listen to appetite for destruction, listen to how well him and izzy stradlin write there riffs togehter. A lot of the time theyre doing different things and its so expressive. Then slash's solos are incredible melodies and just passionate. The 80's really got watered down with all the melodic shredders and stuff like that towards the end of the 80's. Slahs's style was a breathe of fresh air and energy, swagger, groove, shred that was needed at that point. Dirty rock 'n roll and fast and punky at times from duff mckagen's influence of punk. Then his image is legendary, and that just adds to his legacy, and then all the stories and all that too. Great stuff.
Slash is great but his best work was when he is with duff and Izzy. It takes all 3 to fill out that sound.
I've gained immense admiration for Slash the last few years. When he released the Snakepit album "Ain't Life Grand" I was blown away. Then a few years back I watched the Slash and the Conspirators live in Sydney Australia video and was hooked ever since. He's more than an image, he's the real deal.

I am absolutely no Slash "hater" - he has his moments, but mostly I just don't feel him. Couple of days ago I heard Lukather live - that is someone I feel. By the way - same with Bonnamassa, I do not feel him. He is playing great, but ... 5 minutes listening to SRV and this guy really touches me. They all are great musicians and at the end - as always in those things - it is just a matter of personal taste. M2C

Man how can someone say that Slash is bad guitarist. His song-writing is something unbelievable. His songs from SMKC, from OOTD, from Snakepit, from GNR, it's something really awesome. I must say that nobody has done something like that. Only Slash. For me he is famous by the reason. And in my opinion he is best guitarist in the world. He can improvise so fast, so clean, so good. His solos are heart-touching. He can write in any genre. Okey not metal but in my opinion Hard Rock, Rock, Blues are more musical than Metal. I love metal. I do metal, i listen to metal. But I like Hard Rock more. And I know so many guitarists. And for me Slash is best. And he is humble too. I love him so much and it's not always about fast playing. Its really not. Song should have soul. Song should not be fast car. Slash knows what he is doing and he is doing it best. Really. In GNR and SMKC he does Hard Rock. In Slash Snakepit it was Hard Rock combined with metal singing. In Velvet Revolver it was Soft Rock and Hard Rock too. And in OOTD he does Blues rock. And he does everything perfect. He is best guitarist of all time. For me

Don’t know how Slash can have a lot of haters. For a guy that came from almost nothing busted his a$$ to learn guitar at a young age and turn his life from an average kid to something many of could only dream of, people should praise his desire to get somewhere in life. He’s been to more places we could ever dream, play in front of thousands, meet many people from different cultures etc. I would say that if you believe in yourself like he did, you can make your dreams come true. I saw guns at giants stadium when the filmed the paradise city video. They were a kick a$$ band and glad I was able to see the original lineup. Not many can say that. I applaud Slash for what he’s become. Kudos to him.

Allot of people are jealous of his success, he does not have the technical perfection style like Paul Gilbert, Vai or Goven, but he is a very artistic inventive clever guitarist.

I feel like people who hate on Slash are focused solely on chops and don't seem to have any real musical appreciation. There are plenty of players that can shred all over the place, but there are far fewer that can actually build the melodic riffs and phrases Slash seems to create so effortlessly. Truly one of the greats IMO.
I can think of a ton of shred guitar players and virtuosos that can play ridiculous things most of us never will, but none of them write anything memorable.

Slash has more in one album than these guys have in a career. Years ago I saw Satriani open for Dream Theater and Petrucci played him out of the building.

Slash is amazing, how can you not admit that with how many Iconic solos and riffs/ballads that man has written.
He may not be that great player in technical terms and virtuosity. But he's veeeery great in terms of composition, feel, and art form and that's what really matters the most. I forgot who said this next quote but it goes something like this "I'd rather hear one that make me feel something, than to hear 1000 note that makes me feel none"

When I hear people talking about whether they think guitarists are overrated or whatever, I've just learned over the years to shut down on it. I used to engage in all that incessant babel, but I realize that it comes from everyone’s varying tastes. I’m going to like bands and guitarists that you may or may not hate, so there’s really no wrong answer. You may hate 'Poison',... but I bet you sing-along to “Every Rose” or “Nothing But A Good Time” before you catch yourself doing it and look around to see if anybody saw you just before you say,..."Fn Poison suuucks!”
I’ve known tons of people who used to be right beside me at concerts, thrashing out to a band, only to hear them a couple years later telling me how much they hated and never once loved them. They were the ones that showed me how to play some of the solo notes I know today, because they were the ones who figured them out and taught them to me…Lolol
The point is that you can say anything you want about Slash, but there would have never been these huge iconic songs like “Welcome to the Jungle, Sweet Child, Paradise City, etc." and so many others we all know and love, without him. I don't think I have ever met anyone who didn't like at least one of those three songs.
I guess I’ve just tried to adopt a philosophy where, "If I don’t like it, but I know, thousands of others do, let them enjoy it in peace." I have had moments that made me wonder why, in the living hell, someone would like a particular song because I thought it sucked so bad, but then there's this huge group of people up rocking out to it. It makes me want to pull my hair out, ears off, and stab drillbits in it! I have never been a huge Zeppelin fan… I know, I know, and I’ve caught hell over the years. (LOL) Same with Skynard. I cannot stand Rush. I can’t stand G. Lee’s voice; it's just never been the type of music I’m into, even though Neil Peart is/was one of the baddest ass drummers I’ve ever heard, but I would rather listen to Tommy Lee play drums because it’s more my style. And I know you guys would line up all day long to argue with that, but that’s fine because it’s about preference! You go and enjoy what you love, and I'll do the same. Screaming at me and telling me that the music I like sucks isn't going to dissuade me from listening to it.
Some people would lay down in front of a bus to proclaim and defend the fact that Slash is the greatest guitar player of all time. Lolol…. You are not gonna change that fact in their minds. The same person might tell you that Eric Johnson blows….lol The fact is, all this shit is subjective. Unless there is some kind of sonic guitar test out there where one must sit down and play every single note in perfect time, perfect measure, and perfect pitch, then you’re never going to have an honest test on who’s the best or whatever. How can you judge between Stevie Ray Vaughan and Mark Knopfler? Why would you even want to? Enjoy both of them instead of pitting them against each other in a duel of death. Two very unique styles, both delicious for the ears to listen to.
I never really understood the word overrated or underrated. People who love Slash’s guitar playing are going to rate him highly, and those that don’t won't. If the ones who really like him ever write it down, people who don’t like Slash are going to read it and cry, “Bullshit!” We need to be smarter and not get drawn into so much debate, unless that’s what we’re after in the first place. I think the reason so many people don’t actually learn how to play better is because they’re more interested in fussing and blaming everything on the equipment or the tricks and special effects that guitar players use in the studio because such and such player isn't all that good...(blah blah blah) . lol I could not care less! If it sounds good on the album, GREAT! And I really don’t care if I go to a concert and a guitar player comes out and uses a couple backing tracks behind him and rips a solo over the top of it. That doesn’t bother me at all.
lastly, you certainly do not need me to tell you what you talk about or whatever... I'm just throwing in a little common sense commentary. I love robust talk about music, but I hate when it breaks down to people calling each other stupid because of the things they like. Some folks believe that their opinions should be the rule and there's no other room in the boat for anyone who thinks otherwise. They will be the first one to flip the boat over and drown everyone else for their own selfish ambitions.
Anyone who thinks Slash is overrated better be able to rip out the intro to Welcome, or frankly play through any song on AFD. Slash didn't play a million notes because he couldn't, its because the music didn't call for it

@@NintenDubI’m a fan of slash but I think that is a fair point to an extent. AFD is classic album but the other GNR record is not so great, a few standout songs and solos. I do like his playing on the first snakepit album from 1995. I think at that time he had a very cool dirty blues sound with a touch of 80s rock with his legato but I am not a huge fan of those songs and that singer. I’m not sure he’s really overrated because I mostly hear guitarists in comment sections saying he’s not that great. Maybe it’s just because he’s more popular in general and is a well known guy and has all those signature models. He’s kind of brand almost. I like his playing style from the 90s. But his style is quite basic compared to tons of shedders out there, although to be fair most of said players have probably never even had hit songs. Malmstein is a mind blowing player but no one knows who he is aside from players and his music is not really very good unless you’re just all about the guitar

Oh yeah Slash is the bomb 💣 one of the best ever and I'm an older man 54 in September he is awesome love his tone and the way he utilizes the rhythm pickup just awesome

He isn’t one of the shred stunt guys BUT he is a fantastic song writer and BAND guitarist…. Page and Richard’s don’t shred….they don’t do 220bpm or polyphia but they have made more money than any shred guy ever…because they write songs that appeal to the soul and make you feel better after hearing them. Isn’t that what we do this for? For people to respond?

I feel like a lot of the criticism of Slash stems from his early days when him (and GnR) were just completely wasted all the time. Some of his performances back then were not very flattering.
I saw him a few years ago with Miles Kennedy and the Conspirators and it was the best guitar sound I’ve ever heard.

My biggest "problem" with Slash is that he has become sort of his own caricature. Same look, same posing (with or without guitar), same licks for more than 20 years.

great click bait title "Slash Isn't Really That Good?" :) :) LOL ...anyway GNR album come out in 1988, when all the guitar players were using tapping and floyd rose, and playing the "I am the fastest dude" game Yngwie, Steve Vai, Paul Gilbert etc etc all these talented guitar heroes....so to have a guy SLASH bringing back an old style of playing was a great revolution !
Slash has my respect, however, I have never quite forgiven him for butchering "Hey Joe" solo at the Rock n Roll HOF.
I was so hyped for him playing with Mitch Mitchell and Billy Cox, but then Slash butchered the solo imo haha.
Other than that, the man has his place in history, can't hate him for that.

I've never thought Slash was anything but a good competent guitarist. He's not a god or an idol, nor is he the "greatest ever", or anything like that ,which sounds more like fan-club PR, than real musical appreciation. I don't want to be thought to be "damning with faint praise," but to over-rate him is just as bad as dismissing his work out of hand. Sadly we live in a time of intense and fast gratification, asked to like ir dislike someone or something because it suits marketing gurus to polarise identity opinions for their own benefit. Slash is, as is Don Felder, and Isn Moss (of Cold Chisel), and maybe Keith Scott , Brian May, and even George Harrison, well fitted for the songs they solo in, and the right kind of approach,and personality, for their respective bands. Any of them would be good wherever they played, but most would never have been heard of without the popular success of the songs their band turned out. If it weren't for the success of Guns and Roses, no one would be talking about Slash's guitar playing, whereas maybe someone like Eric Clapton or Jeff Beck would be notable even without a particular band setting. This doesn't make them any better than someone adapted especially for the group they were in,... it just means they have a slightly different musical goal or task.

Technically, he's not even on par with most 12 year olds these days.
What makes Slash so good is the way he's able to express emotion with every note he plays and make his audience feel something. It's not WHAT he's playing, it's HOW he's playing it.
Slash has more soul and feel in his left nut than most people can even fathom. That's what makes him so fucking good. It has nothing to do with 7ths and minor bullshit penatonics or whatever the fuck.
Music is an art. It's not a sport or a science

Say what you will about Slash, but never forget that when " Appetite for Destruction" was released, he SINGLE HANDEDLY reminded the whole world what rock and roll guitar was. And it sure as hell wasn't Bach and Paganini.

Slash is not that high skilled mind blowing guitarist nor he can play anything, he is kind a unique with sound and stile witch is great and even as persona.
He's ALWAYS been overrated.
Smart that he capitalized on the fame that being in GnR provided - although that fame came more from being a caricature of a Rock Star (top hat, shades, etc.), not so much a LEGIT Rock Star who can play.
A good guitar player is not only someone who is technically good, but someone who above all writes great songs

Was never a Guns 'n' Roses fan, at all, and was never a Slash fan. Not saying he's not good, just don't care for his style, and definitely not his tone.
I didn't like anything that came along after Slash (end of late 70's and 80's rock era) either... the so-called "alternative" or the so-called "Nu-Rock" scenes and all others similar.

I think with Slash and in extension of course GnR, it's similar to bands like AC/DC or even Stones. Everyone says their stuff is so easy and the guitar players are bad because they can't shred or something like that. But then you rarely ever see someone actually playing those songs well.
Like, people can play the notes but it rarely sounds as it is supposed to. Simple stuff still has to be played well, it has to groove the right way.
AC/DC is definitely the prime example here imo. If it's so easy, why does it sound wrong when you play it, and not when they do? Because difficulty isn't always about playing fast and complex.

Yes yes yes in terms of technical proficiency/mastery, slash is not up there, mediocre at best. BUT, in terms of persona/presence, widely recognized riffs, music composing, rock n roll swagger, he is definitely among the GOATS
Not sure any guitarist went freshman with the greatness of Appetite in changes, low growl and melodical adventure.

I love Slash, but I don't love his playing. Same goes for SRV for me. I don't like the fast "shreddy" stuff. His solo on knocking on heavens door, that's what I love.
Slash totally got my respect in 1988 on Appetite ... eventhough I kept asking myself who wrote the song : Slash or Izzy ? Well the prominent guitar is usually played by Slash so I guess he wrote the songs , more or less, ... of course not the lyrics
I never really dug Slash or GnR, but I would never say he isn't good. He is an intuitive player much like Pagey but lacks the technical understanding. Some people are jealous of players who just jam and really don't know the music theory behind it.
I think of what he is doing there as Dorian with the major 6 and b7. BB tended to not use a 7 at all. Also, when I first learned this song years ago, I played the B note on 4th string 9th fret (instead of open B string). Don't know if that is right or not but it does have more of a percussive sound.
Since pairing with MK Slash sells himself under value. Saw Slash live on the tour a few month ago and MK seemed bored and spoiled the show with repetitive rock star gestures and lack of ambition. OOTD is a well produced album btw.
Slash is great with some legendary licks and solos. The issue I have is his live performances, where he isn’t able to do justice to his songs. I am not sure of the early GnR days but stuff I can find are mostly let downs. Sure there are a couple of nice concerts but majority is not meeting the quality of recordings. Many bands play stuff differently live but still hit the needed level, his ones don’t. Great to learn pentatonic licks from though, great inside the box player.
Why do guys care?
Can Petrucci, Satriani, or Van run circles around Slash? Probably.
Slash is much closer to them, than we are to him.
And, all those riffs you heard on the GnR records and tried to learn?
He came up with them in the creative process. We are merely trying to replicate them.
i think the gap between gnr stardom and slash's guitar on it's own is why folks think he's not a blow your mind type of player. outside of gnr and izzy song writing he never really grew or did anything that made any one really care about his musical direction. don't agree? facts are the facts, snake pit, revolver...yawn,.....i think i just dozed off
He might not be the most skillful guitarist. He's got his own unique style and tone which are beloved, studied, and imitated. He's the legend of rock. He's the reason I started playing guitar and buying Gibsons.
