      @Andrew Dexter ••• I totally agree Andrew. I still haven't had the pleasure to meet this fine gentleman, who I regard (no pun intended) as the best of all the Doctors. I did get the chance to meet and spend one-on-one time back in 1993 with Ray Harryhausen, who co-produced and did the wonderful VFX for THE GOLDEN VOYAGE OF SINBAD. Tom Baker mentions in the video above that his portrayal in this 1973 film (as Prince Koura) was pivotally important to his casting as the Doctor. Ray spoke very highly of Tom as an actor and felt it was the standout performance of the film. This is high praise, indeed as John Philip Law was Sinbad and Robert Shaw played the Oracle in the same movie, not to mention Douglas Wilmer as the Golden Masked Vizier.
      Anyway, I said what you said about Mr. Baker with regards to Mr. Harryhausen years ago and vividly remember my shock and sadness when I heard of Ray's passing on NPR's afternoon radio news show on May 7, 2013. I imagine I shall be just as saddened on that inevitable day in the future when we loose our Doctor. But hopefully, God willing, that day will still be a long way off, bless Tom's soul. He is just as riveting to watch in person here as he ever was in any of his many performances. I now know why we loved him on the program so much... he truly IS the Doctor... on camera and in real life!
      A great scene featuring Tom in SINBAD :

      This fan made trailer is better and more encompassing of the film than Columbia's original :

    Tom was brilliant as Captain Rum. He was so wonderfully over the top and a wonderful cameo in the series. Rowan is also brilliant but no one should tell Tom how to act. Tom is Tom and sod anyone who tries to direct otherwise.

    Thank You Tom.

  • @jhibbitt1

    you know what's great about tom, he always gives completely honest answers and tells you what he's thinking and doesn't do all the polite flattery. when he didn't like something or didn't get on with someone he just says it and even criticise himself if he thinks it's the case

    • @colinmcphan
      @colinmcphan 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I have to admit.....To. is refreshingly honest and is not afraid to be honest about himself or his imprrfections. I have a lot of respect for anyone who can admit that they have behaved badly at times. I think that is why fellow actors like Louise Jamison and his ex-wife Lalla Ward are willing to work with Tom again and in Louise's case absolutely love and adore Tom so much now and speak highly of him. I just wish he wouldn't put himself down as harshly as he doas sometimes. I have to admit I will miss Tom when he finally leaves us for good. God bless.

  • @colinmcphan

    I love Tom and his sense of humour. He seems to enjoy just sitting and hanging out with the fans and sharing his life with them. It seems like he has continued to grow as a person in terms of learning from past mistakes and being open about it. He's not just a British national treasure but an international treasure! I first became aware of Tom Baker watching him on my New York PBS station as Dr. Who. I have seen some of the other doctors and respect all the actors. But when BBC America aired, over the last few weeks, some of Tom's best episodes from Dr. Who...his doctor stole my heart all over again. If BBC America is reading this...please, please, please don't stop airing some more of Tom Baker's Dr. Who episodes!!! They are priceless as is the man. I would love if they could also air some of his other work after he left Dr. Who as well. Very talented and genuine person.

    • @wongawonga1000
      @wongawonga1000 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think he ever really played the role. Throughout Doctor Who, he was just being himself.Fortunately this sufficed since Tom Baker is such a unique individual. His innate personality fitted the role like a glove.To use an example: when Jeremy Brett played Sherlock Holmes in the 1980's Granada Television Production. Brett immersed himself so deeply in the role that he found it difficult to shake the character at the end of filming.

      Seven years wasn't enough for you?!??!
      Most things on TV go sour after they hit 5 years and people don't care when they leave.
      Tom Baker is fortunate enough that he didn't ever sour that much for many Dr. Who fans....
      I don't particularly care for what I've seen of the series itself -- classic or renewed -- but Tom Baker still stood out for me. With its chaotic direction, writing that seems to go all over the place, and questionable production values (horrible special effects in the original series, too many explosions and a lot more violence in the new series), if the lead character/actor didn't grab you, it was game over.
      Again, Tom Baker stood out for me and that's who I remember when people say Dr. Who...
      ... And he really is an interesting chap in real life!

    • @MALONEYCAMFIELD
      @MALONEYCAMFIELD 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Actually, you're wrong there, the modern Doctor Who may be loud and frenetic but it's nowhere near as violent as the original Doctor Who sometimes was, especially during the Philip Hinchcliffe era. They've been far more careful about the depiction of violence in the 21st century version. This difference between the series has been discussed on numerous classic series DVDs.

    • @MALONEYCAMFIELD
      @MALONEYCAMFIELD 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      "With its chaotic direction, writing that seems to go all over the place, and questionable production values (horrible special effects in the original series" The original Doctor Who was a very low budget series compared to television today. Having said that, the special effects weren't ALWAYS bad - if you want to see a much lower standard in special effects and general production values, you should have watched The Tomorrow People on ITV. That made Doctor Who from the same era look like a movie.

    • @MALONEYCAMFIELD
      @MALONEYCAMFIELD 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Personally, i think Philip Hinchcliffe got it bang on when he said "We had to rely on the story because there was little we could do with the effects. Star Wars in a way was the turning point. Once Star Wars had happened, Doctor Who effectively was out of date from that moment on really, judged by that level of technological expertise."

I wish we could have events like this in Australia... but alas too far for Tom to travel I would think ..... and now impossible ... as we are still in the 2019 to 2021 and beyond Pandemic and even by Zoom it would not be the same! Really so appreciate being able to watch this! Bless you for uploading and sharing this FANTASTIC Q&A and love that the fans dressed up and that Tom brought part of his costume? I still have a bent wood hatstand just like that in my hallway, and I have the urge to get out of storage and hang on it again, my very own homemade version of my Doctor Who scarf that I knitted from all the similar colours of wool that I could find, and I used to wear proudly..... to school and in Melbourne going out with my bemused and embarrassed friends, and I would practice my yo yo skills! Like the weirdo I was happy to be!😂

    So it's interesting -- shortly after his 1981 departure, Baker really scrambled to answer this "which was your favorite" question -- after quite a bit of fumbling, he responded "uhh, uhh, the Frankenstein one" -- but he has really leaned into the franchise in subsequent decades, possibly stemming from Big Finish and/or convention work -- his 2010 interview for Doctor Who Online specifically called out this "you seem more familiar with the series now than you were in the 1980s," and he readily agreed.

    I think when he played Dr Who he looked slightly older than his age. Then he looked incredibly older & weary in season 18. After that, 35 yrs later, he obviously aged physically. but he sounds just like himself 35 yrs before. maybe that line is true after all "I have finally found peace". god bless u

      For most of his time playing the doctor, he was classed as homeless. He lived on friends sofas and in hotels, the BBC tried to get him to spend his money on a home, they even took him house hunting but he just didn't want to settle down

    • @colinmcphan
      @colinmcphan 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +ngNudraconis It's actually awesome in a way. Considering that Tom made some pretty good money right before Doctor Who and especially during and after Doctor Who it shows that Tom's priorities were not to accumulate and hoard material wealth. In a way he was a traveler traveling thru life....kinda like the Doctor traveling thru the Universe and time. Makes me love Tom that much more. Very much a rebel like the Doctor.

    • @colinmcphan
      @colinmcphan 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Actually Tom looked a little younger then his age when he first started the role. He also had a great youthful energy about him. In his last season or two Tom had become ill and been under major stress which caused his hair to straighten out and turn slightly white. He still looked good and tried his best but he was weary from the burden of the role and his public fame and responsibility to the character took there toll on Tom. He truly loved the character and thank God for us fans he did.
