  • This video will show you how to adjust and repair the shift lever indicator on various years and models of Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury vehicles. Ford Ford has used this type of shift indicator for many years but over time and high usage makes the plastic piece that holds the shifter cable become brittle and ends up breaking which throws off the shift indicator dial. I bought the upgraded aluminum one off Amazon and listed below is a link to it.

Excellent tutorial, this is what an aftermarket part should be. I bought one of these for my ‘99 Ranger, fixed it up superbly. Ford should’ve had a metal one of these from the factory instead of the cheap plastic crap one that breaks on every vehicle that uses this shifter system.

Worked for my 1996 Ford Explorer XLT, except you need to file the little metal nub on the inside bracket just a little so the wheel can turn freely and not bind up as it does when just try to put it in the brand new metal bracket. (The original Ford plastic bracket had a hair more space between the inside bracket ends. The Chinese metal replacement part is not made as exact!)

Came here to say if you grab any plastic piece in my truck like you did in this video they will crumble in your hands. You can’t take my clips out without them breaking one time use on my truck after 20 years
Edit( great video tho I think I’m just going to zip tie it on place if I can’t see where that loop goes too, I’m def not taking my dash apart to fix this)
    Cheers ❤

Thank you. But does the Shift Indicator wire have a spring tension on it, because in my Ford Ranger 1999 the indicator does not work, I open it to control, and the white bracket is ok, also the cable loop, but this cable loop to the lever does not have any spring tension on it. When I pull on the this cable but only close to the bracket , it moves the indicator, somewhat. Does the cable going to the indicator meter needs to be replaced? Or do I need a complete instrument panel? Thanking you.

Thanks, but the "PERFECTFIT" aluminum part WILL NOT FIT A 1992 E250 FORD. The angle is different, and you will need to hacksaw off part of the
    "bolt" hole piece(make it flat).

Same problem I'm having on a 2001 ford expedition eddie bauer. Mine doesn't align either plus I have to pull shifter all the way up and turn key same time in order for it to start. Don't think I can do what you did, I'm an older guy with a bad back from construction accident, but thanks for the video. I'll try to get my backyard mechanic to do it but he's scared of doing things he's never done before and messing it up worse. Thanks for the video.

I did this exact same fix on my 97 Ford explorer AWD. But the indicator needle stops moving over to the right after the N-D position. I tried turning the adjuster wheel almost as far as I could to tighten up the slack but it's still the same....🤦🤷 Any ideas how to remedy this ????? 🙏

If the cable breaks you can take a eyelet and crimp it on to go over the hook. As well.

Can't this repair be done from underneath, taking no panels off ?
    I used a zip tie for a temporary ( 1 year ) fix......

On Ford Explorers you have to take the plastic section under steering column off (2 screws and 2 screws in hood release bracket), then a ridged metal plate (7 screws) under that to have full open access to the wheel and plastic bracket...

What if that little black screw is broken in half? The screw the turn wheel screws onto?
That's what I got goin on

You’ll have to get a new shift indicator cable assembly like this www.ebay.com/itm/265389780001?chn=ps&_trkparms=ispr%3D1&amdata=enc%3A1l4JdvH2BR2yBLmjHlX6PuA40&norover=1&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-117182-37290-0&mkcid=2&mkscid=101&itemid=265389780001&targetid=1644837435003&device=m&mktype=&googleloc=1014573&poi=&campaignid=16743749222&mkgroupid=138744546207&rlsatarget=pla-1644837435003&abcId=9300842&merchantid=114737582&gbraid=0AAAAAD_QDh8JsTpXCnWePd6pslNjhDp2J&gclid=Cj0KCQjwxMmhBhDJARIsANFGOSuKFSjN3vZljiD2a7AfoUEv04rGd1OIRNKZDoTlKbscv9dxVw48QJwaAurlEALw_wcB or look at your local junk yard considering these trucks are everywhere.

@BLUE COLLAR GARAGE Damn!!! Thank you for the link, but I should've told you first, it's for a 2011 Ford Crown Victoria. It is a Police Interceptor, although I don't think that matters. Unless it is specific from police vs civilian cars, but I'm pretty sure it's the same
