Thanks for this description. I replaced the bushings in my 2002 F250 in about an hour, even with 73-year-old arthritic hands...I was a Diesel mechanic for 50 years, just needed an idea of how to go about this. Good video, no crappy music! Thanks. (I have subscribed).

I’m an old girl and I do not work on my own car. 😪. But my 99 Ranger has had issues where the key gets stuck in that thingy - now yesterday the PRNDL has gone wonky and L is D.. 😌.

@@k.hendrickson8735 Older guy here and mine is so wonky it wont even start without jiggling the shifter around. About to go buy the tube an just replace it, figure i might as well fix my gear indicator while im at it as it hasn't shown right for years at this point. It connects some place in there im sure

I have a few 2000 series expedition and f150 which I love -- and thankfully you are always ready for me when I need a "ford failed me here, let me show you how to fix it" video. Its happened with many things now, from variable timing gears (buy only ford, yes I always will) to loose column shifter bushing replacements. I can't think of your name but always recognize it and go to it whenever searching, thanks again man. appreciate all the steps and visibility of "issues" as you go -- you make it all look easy and I get through it because of that. Thanks again 20 times over.

As a full-time backcountry van dwelling nomad for the past five years.
I've watched many videos to fix what I've broken on my van. This is by far the most informative as far as step by step directions.
Thank you for saving me another couple hundred by not having to go to a shop.

Thank you for clear dictation, clear lighting, and not skipping any steps...showing how you slightly struggle with removing each part/screw is very instructional, and lets us know what kind of resistance we are in for. Outstanding, thank you!

Thanks for you time to put this on-line. The local dealer parts rep. told me the shaft, lever and bushings would be needed for the repair, and if I could not do the work the service department would. If he could have said this with a straight face I would have let them do the work, but the hair on the back of my neck told me something was not correct and to leave there immediately. I did and found your video, Thanks Again, Jim.

That's got to be the best instructional video I've ever seen!! By far the clearest, simplest instructions ever. How they had the whole area so well lighted to show you exactly where the different screws etc., were was incredible. They didn't lose me once where I had to back up the video to see what I didn't understand like in every other video out there.
    Absolute great job!! Thank you...

My 2003 F150 has 320 K miles. Steering wheel had become hard to get into park. Really dangerous. Tightening the screws under the dash had helped once, but they are tight. This completely fixed the issue. So thankful for this channel. My new gear indicator arrives this week and I will replace it. This channel helps me keep my truck on the road. Dealer and transmission shop would not even look at it. Now it is fixed!,,

Never been a real hands on car guy but just bought a 99 f150 and this was a needed repair.
Picked up the parts, watch the video a few times and then full speed ahead.
Maybe an hour and fifteen minutes start to finish. Absolute piece of cake.
    Great instructions, thanks a million!!

Just changed these out and that video was perfect.
Step by step. Took a little longer than here, but that was due to panel removal and short stubby arms.
Your videos already saved me a lot of trips to the mechanic, and sometimes send me to the mechanic when I see it's too complex.

Your way of explaining really helped me! it finally all came together and I had to say "DA!, deanna." I can usually work on my cars! I buy old cars . I know that when u do change that first part! The rest are gonna say "me too me too! I like to do that I buy the parts & put them in myself (most) .getting older my car dreams fading . But You showed the good visual and you explained it just for me! I couldn't Believe it! After over 30yrs. Finally, Yay! & I played it over & over trying to find those dam 4 bolts. What I finally got! was the steering wheel column & their parts. Instead of buying a whole column . Cuz I have trouble figuring it out. (troubleshooting) . This time ! You did it! been without both my vehicles since "Caldor Fire" evacuated! This is so hard: my 78 dodge cruisemaster sportsman 318 it was so vandilized windshield shattered wires all screwed up what a horrible story. I'm gonna give all you a break now! Now no good mechanics I can't afford shop. Stop! stop! I can't control myself. 1999 explorer xlt. Now I have excitement again for working on cars. Thank You! Bye! Deanna joy

This video is perfect. Very clear and concise. Fixed my shifter without a problem. Both my brackets were broken. I was able to purchase new ones at my local auto parts store. Dorman part number 905 -110. Cost half of the Ford parts. The originals are cast metal, these are stamped. Should last forever.

Thank you so much! I arrived home today and my car would not go into park. In fact neutral had become drive and reverse had become neutral. Because of this video I was able to drop the steering wheel and put a bolt back in that had fallen out onto the floor. It was holding the furthest back part of the column shift tube in place. It was a nightmare getting my big hands in around the back to screw it back in (it the one that is on top and comes in from behind on the firewall side) Anyway I am in no way a mechanic. I could not have done this without your help. I am sending a donation immediately after this comment. "Ford Vehicles Loose Steering Column Shifter: Shift Tube Bushing Replacement Guide"

Thanks for the video. Made it easy to replace the bushings on my 2005 E150 The shifter was always loose since I bought it about a year ago and suddenly got alot worse yesterday when a piece of metal fell by my feet that turned out to be part of the rear clamp at which point I became concerned this buggy was going to leave me stranded. Found your video, got all the parts and was able to finish the job in about an hour thanks!

THANK YOU for this video! Your clear and thorough explanations were a great help when I did this job on my Econoline. I've been working on my own vehicles for many years, but there's nothing like seeing a pro explain a job before you get into it yourself. It's not the quickest job, but it's straightforward and easily "DIY"-friendly. Thanks again.

  • @NickMyers1
    @NickMyers1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Great video Brian!
For the 1990 through 2007 Ford Taurus/sable the procedure is very similar but you do have to disengage the shift indicator by unhooking the loop from the Column then using the adjuster wheel to remove threads. Otherwise you’ll snap the indicator wire.
This is also applicable for the 1990 through 2004 panther platform vehicles - grand Marquis, town car, crown Vic. Same thing as applicable for the Taurus, you must remove the shift indicator hook and wire from the column otherwise you’ll snap it. It appears ford gave more indicator wire on the expedition/F1 50
I’ve done six different cars replacing the shifter tube bushings and I’m amazed every time how much better the shifter feels after doing that. One 03 Town Car I have from Florida, the plastic had dried out and disintegrated leaving black plastic dust all inside the column in under the steering column covers and bezels. 41k and sloppy shifter. And as was mentioned in another message, the two torx bolts on the back of the steering column always seem to work loose especially on trucks, as well as the 96-01 Explorers

Thank You, Thank You, Thank You, @FordTechMakuloco, for the highly detailed instructions to do this task. I proudly drive a 2001 Excursion; the steering column, the shifter, and the steering wheel shook upon applying the brakes. I could not take it any longer. As I was loosening the 13mm nut closest to your left knee was loose. I initially thought that could have been the answer to the rattling noise. Yet, following your instructions, I continued to tear it apart. I already had the bushings, so why not. After replacing the bushings and cleaning up all the dust and dirt, I put it back together. Holy Cow, what a difference this simple task made. I thank you again, BJW

And the other one or two don’t really do general repairs. Hey I saw your old diesel 6 liter EGR one. You have evolved Brian. And..did I detect you lowering your voice and looking over your shoulder for the boss in that one? Were you still at the dealership? To cool! Great video and instructions! When I went to install these bushings on my '99 F150 I noticed that the front one had spit out from under the clamp, and the torx screws on the back clamp were fairly loose. During this swap it's basically half way in accessing the back of the instrument cluster to take care of the intermittent digital odometer issue prevalent to these vehicles. I soldered both end terminals liberally to make sure that neither end would lose contact again. Took about 3 hours start to finish for everything due in great part to videos like yours...thanks!

Thanks for the great video!! Lucky for me mine broke this morning outside an auto parts store so I was able to get what I needed there and fix it in the parking lot. My tube however was broken in half so had to replace the entire thing.

I did this job on my 2001 F150 a few years ago, I put a light dusting of graphite on the shaft and the bushings. It probably didn't need it but it gave me a sense of security.

This is one of the best "how to" videos I've seen yet.
Concise, to the point, no stupid music, great lighting, great camera work showing all fasteners etc., no skipping steps and great little "tips" along the way. Perfect commentary along the way. You're a great tech and even better teacher. You've easily earned a sub and keep up the great work.

Thank you very much, Brian, for all of the work that went into making this video.
I was positive my 1998 Ford Explorer XLT with 139,500+ miles on it was going to need some serious tranny work (is that still PC?).
Thanks to you and your video, I fixed it myself in about an hour's time.
The last time I thought my Explorer was going to need tranny work was when it had a really bad vibration and sound when it went into overdrive (sounded and felt like you were accidentally driving over "rumble strips".)
I did some homework on that and found many suggestions from people just like you (with expertise and knowledge who were willing to take the time to share) that it was probably related to torque converter lockup. Several of those people recommended "Dr. Tranny Instant Shudder Fixx".
Though I was really skeptical, I figured it was only $14 bucks for two tubes of the stuff, I didn't see any reports of anyone having damaged their tranny by using it so what could it hurt?
Only one tube was necessary to cure that problem over two years ago.
(Now, if it could eliminate the still all too clear surprise tranny shudder I experienced the first time I was in Vegas at the young age of 22 and the grizzled old female bartender at the "MGM Grand" took pity on me (when the "girl" who I thought was really diggin' me went to the restroom) and leaned over the bar to me and said, "Hon, you realize that's a dude, right?" There goes that massive tranny shudder again!!!)
In all seriousness, if you have a PayPal account, I'll gladly buy you dinner (okay, not in some fancy-schmancy downtown Chi-town restaurant, but somewhere like Papa Passero's in Westmont or Tom and Jerry's in Sycamore (both our old stomping grounds before we moved to Flori-duh 20 years ago!)) for an Italian beef and beer! (Down here in central Florida, no one knows what an Italian beef is and they try to give you a "cheesesteak" instead... HERESY!!!)
Again, Brian, thank you for the video. So glad there are people like you who not only are fantastic at what you do but are willing to share your knowledge with others.
Have a wonderful Christmas, New Year's and fantastic 2019!
    Duane

Very informative and detailed procedure - with great lighting. On my 2011 E350 van - the damper bushing at the end of the actual shift lever (Dorman pn 905-096) was also broken - which was causing half of my problem. I'd suggest editing your video to check for that problem - it seems to be pretty common Might be good practice to always change this while you're in this deep.

Mine must be broke to , I had a half circle pice of a bushing fall on the floor one day and I was wondering where that came from. It must be one of those metal clamps

Yep, excellent video, redid my 2000 excursion in four hours. I found it was easier to leave the big four nuts loose until you get the column covers screwed into place when putting it all back together. All in all, piece of cake.

    • @DriftinDoug
      @DriftinDoug 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes! Leave the nuts loose to wiggle the shrouds in position first.
