Shinko Mobber 505 Tires for Honda Grom and Honda Monkey: DO THEY SHRED?!

This video was filmed during my week in Upstate NY, right on the PA border. I spent a great deal of my life here as a child, learning how to ride and enjoying the pristine trail riding that is offered there. Now living in Florida, I only get the chance to ride here once a year, so this year I brought the Grom to use as my dual-sport machine. Equipped with the Mobbers, I road some pretty rugged trails and explored the amazing dual sport roads, and along the way, put the Mobbers to the test!
The tires worked great for this type of terrain, which was rich soil, wet dirt, loose rocks, gravel, and peat-mossy soft type woods floor. Back home in Florida, the Mobbers mostly live in dry sandy soil, where they tend to be a bit loose-footed (I'll do a sand review soon), but here in NY, they were absolute BEASTMODE! 10/10 for this type of riding, but I must disclaim that I have the 130 rear size on the front wheel instead of the 120 front size, so my feel will be a bit different. I have to assume that the proper 120 front would work even better though.

We are building a minibike for a 100 mile race (gravel/mud/dirt/rocks/hardpack) in Oregon and ran the Maxis 130/70r12 in front and rear last year. I picked up a Shinko rear tire as it looked more aggressive. After running several different ones, what would you run up front for 100% off road? 130vs120 shinko? Or Maxis?
That sounds like a cool race, I want in! Is it the Gambler? It really depends on the type of terrain you'll be running on. I found the Maxxis to be a bit more stable in the sand, and the Mobbers to be better in the mud and loose heavy stuff. The Mobbers seem to be a bit washy in the sand in my experience, but only in the front. A front Maxxis and rear Mobber might be a good setup! Otherwise, for "all-around'ness" the Maxxis might be the better choice.
@@John5XR Thanks for the input! Yeah we are running the Gambler 100 - you should join! ;) it was a really fun event last year. I think I will try the Shinko on the rear for more traction and the Maxxis up front.

Tip for beginners dont speed among trees...they dont move till you hit them
good tip, and probably won't even move if you do hit them! lol
My Grom came with Maxxis knobbies and we recently found out that they were mounted in reverse..at least the rear, not sure if the front is omnidirectional. I'm looking for the best tire for sandy conditions. I saw that someone else mentioned a rear Mobber, and a front Maxxis, or would you recommend the Big Block front (which seems more street) and Mobber rear? I'm not looking for on road performance, only off road. Thank you for another great video. Subbed!
Great question! If in sand, the Maxxis were the best in my opinion. The Mobbers felt washy in the sand, but are superior in heavy dirt and mud

Need to get the Kitaco skid plate. Just added one to the Monkey and looks like it'll help keep rocks from being thrown into the engine. Edit - Not sure if they make the same one for the Grom.
I’ve seen the skid plate and it’s a great idea. I think it’s built for the OEM exhaust though, which is very low. I am not using that, so there would be a big air gap between the plate and engine if I used it. Now if they make one for aftermarket exhausts, that’s a different story!

Hey, good review, how'd you find the 130 digs in while turning off road, is it ok? Hows it handle on road no wierd tracking issues?
The 130’s are great in the heavy dirt and mud, but are a bit “washy” in the sand and light stuff here in Florida. On the road they’re actually pretty good because the knobs are fairly stiff

Hey do you fill like the ohlins work good for the dirt. Another TH-cam says the travel is shorter and it’s to stiff for off-road. That seems the opposite of what your showing

Always looking for new places to ride, I'm also in NY and Matamoras P.A. is around 1/2 hr ride down Rt.209 so High Point, Hawks Nest isn't far. Alot of the trails have gone now with people buying up the land I used to rip up about 20 - 15 yrs ago. The Grom the only bike you have to hit trails ?
That’s awesome! I love the dual-sport wonderland that is the NY/PA border in the central part of the state. I only get to ride there once a year as I live in Florida, and this year I took the Grom. Previously I took a DRZ400 and KLX125L, but the Grom was great for the road sections. I just got a 06’ KX450F for trails and mx’ing here in Florida, but I doubt I’d take it to NY as it’s pretty quick for the laid back stuff I like to do up there

Temp gauge. Not sure if the previous owner had it connected correctly though
How do they handle on the road? Effect your top speed at all? Looking between these and the maxis tires however i'm a urban rider so need BOTH
They’ll kill some top speed for sure, but not sure how much in terms of numbers. For urban riding, I feel the Maxxis would be the better choice. Maybe even the Zuma scooter tires with the deep street treads
@@John5XR great feedback and that k you for that. I like your recommendation. My Grom is used for 80% road then the rest is light off road and plenty of curb jumpin
FYI from all the research and videos I have watched Kenda Big Blocks are the best tires for the Grom if you want to rip it up in the dirt/trails.
