  • motoz.com.au/p... After 20 rides in all sorts of terrain the Motoz Hybrid has been a good tyre in almost every terrain - there will never be the perfect all-round tyre but this would have to be high in the small group of tyres that come close for road and dirt use. Visit the Motoz site for more info: www.motoz.com.au/ Over the past year we've had numerous requests for a review of the Motoz Hybrid tyre from a cross training angle - riding gnarly technical terrain with more of a trials and extreme enduro focus. Here are our thoughts after about 20 rides, and down the track we'll add our very long term thoughts at the end of the video. Many dirt riders have experimented with trials tyres for technical riding, with mixed results. The Motoz Hybrid is similar but has stiffer sidewalls, side knobs for cornering and a tougher compound to handle the stresses of dirt riding. A pleasant surprise, it was easier to fit than your average knobby. The Motoz Hybrid really shines when you use low tyre pressures to get that massive footprint, so the TUbliss system was used and it was a match made in heaven - the stiff carcass meant zero PSI was used for our slow technical rides, and around 2 to 4 psi for faster rides. This Motoz Hybrid tyre that rewards the rider into throttle control and traction, a style that is growing along with the popularity of extreme enduro. in loamy or loose hill climbs, it was the equal of a knobby as long as there wasn't too much wheelspin. This was a huge surprise as we felt a trials pattern simply couldn't match a knobby on hill climbs, but it does in most conditions due to that huge footprint on the ground - but this benefit is lost if you are ham fisted on the throttle and start to wheelspin too much. When you are almost at a standstill and think it's all over, this tyre often refuses to give up and you just lug your way to the top - inspiring stuff. On rock slabs and hard packed terrain, the Motoz Hybrid stands out, as you would expect. There is far more rubber on the ground than a knobby, so it grips much better and you need to start moving forward on the bike to prevent wheelies from the excellent traction. On soft sand, it literally floats across the top. The Motoz Hybrid was paired up with the fatter Goldentyre front and the big footprint at both ends meant virtually ignoring soft sand as the Beta floated over the top instead of digging in. Mud? It's been quite dry here so couldn't test the Motoz too much in mud, but impressed so far. The tread pattern doesn't clog up the way we thought it might, and suspect the low tyre pressure means the flexing of the carcass is probably preventing clogging. The traction and drive through mud was excellent, but there was a bit more slide slip than a knobby. Rear braking is more effective with the Motoz. Our coach, Chris Birch, emphasises being just on the point of locking up for maximum braking and the tyre gives a loud and distintive sound just as you start to lock it up a little - very easy to pick and the massive footprint does provide noticeably more rear braking - a great feeling on steep downhills. On flat fast trails, I noticed the tyre did wallow a bit at zero psi so kicked up the pressure and it handled well. At speed it probably doesn't quite a knobby as the tread pattern favours slow technical riding, but again the big footprint means great traction so it isn't far behind the typical knobby for fast riding.Others report the tyre is very puncture resistant with long term use due to the tread pattern. With the TUbliss I doubt I would notice a puncture until the end of the day. I haven't used this on the road, but others report it handles very well once pumped up, and excellent wear characteristics - excellent for dual sport use. yre wear is looking exceptional. I've done about a 20 rides so far and there is almost no wear. Plus the knobs don't round off the way a knobby does, so the traction doesn't drop off. Many are reporting 2500 miles or 4000km is the usual life to having a 1/4 tread left where reportedly traction drops badly and it's time to bin the tyre. Very good news if you like getting your money's worth, or hate tyre changing. Playlist for our enduro vlogs: • All our enduro rides!︱...

    FURTHER NOTES Motoz now make two other types of hybrid tyres, and there are now front tyres available too. The Extreme Hybrid is very similar but more like a trials tyre so very flexible. The Arena Hybrid has a more aggressive tread, it's lighter but has reinforced sidewalls. Soft gummy compound is available in all three types now. motoz.com.au/product-category/hybrid/
    LONG TERM COMMENTS Several months after this review, the leading edge of the knobs rounded off and the traction for hill climbs did decrease significantly. It was still quite good in most other terrains, but I removed it as we were doing lots of hill climbs. That was about 30 rides, and only about 30% of the tread was gone. A friend then put the tyre on his KTM 950 and was quite impressed. He was riding it aggressively but still got quite a lot of wear from it... and good grip. It's interesting to see Motoz now has two other types. I would say this original Mountain Hybrid is great if you want long tyre life, you ride on the road frequently, and your dirt riding style suits the trials-influenced nature of this tyre.

    Thanks for the review - Can you please get back to riding so you can wear it out and compare it to the Kenda Equilibrium?
    Also, not one mention of testicles, nor a Beta Babe to be seen.
    I'm crushed.

    On "paper" electric excites me. But all electric vehicles NEED quick change batteries. Shame Alta got F'd in the A buy H/D , that could have been a game changer compared to the major $$ , corporate bike companies offerings😢

    How does the MOTOZ compare to the golden tire GT216x or something like shinko 505? Looking for an extreme enduro tire, for something to use in wildrock enduro or KOSCIUSKO enduro.

      looks similar but i heard they do a few different types now. not sure how it would compare with the others. there are very few extreme bits in those enduros which is why i think almost everyone uses pretty standard knobbies....

    I watched these videos of yours a few years back. Before beginning as a weekend warrior. I must say now, holy moly you climb some steep slippery hills!! You, sir, are not without skills!! At 125 i was like "no. Nononono. That's insane. I would have spun up or done that with a lot more speed to keep momentum. Or well, i wouldnt have even attempted it probably"...
    When i watched these vids as a rider who'd never ridden serious offroad, i honestly didnt sppreciate what i was seeing. Didnt think much of it. But wow was i unexperienced haha

    I ran a MT43 on my 08 530 exc and found that I loved it. Sure it had a few drawbacks, but the grip on the rocks and hard pack was great. I've got a 690r now and plan on this tire as the first replacement for the stock one.

    Just finished my second ride on a tubliss Moto-Z rear tire with 0psi.
    First the good. I was unable to find a line that this tire couldn't handle. Traction was amazing.
    The bad. After 2 rides (approximately 100 miles) the tire is junk. The side wall has a hole about the size of my hand. Not from sharp rocks, but from flex fatigue due to running 0psi on rocks. I will not be buying another one.

    • @crosstrainingenduro
      @crosstrainingenduro  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +R Cash you definitely need a tire with very strong sidewalls to run zero psi indefinitely, usually it will be six ply. i only run 0psi for our slow technical stuff and the motoz hybrid is handling it okay so far, then 2psi for faster rides.

  • @azlong4596
    @azlong4596 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I like the idea of the tire for my riding type but see there is only the 120. Do you think with the tubeless setup it would work on a pumpkin 690 Enduro which comes with a 140 rear.

    awesome tire. KLX250 @12psi 40% road and highway 110kmh to the gravel and single track. South west British Columbia Canada. 5000kms and only 6mm wear. I’d guess 1/3rd to 1/2 tire life. I’ll never go to anything else.

  • @masterbeta343
    @masterbeta343 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You need a Dunlop d803 it works better than the motoz hybrid and when the nobies start to crack and tear you still get incredibly good traction my dad can get off his bike And give it a little gas and it would just grab onto a slippery root

    great review!! ive always been riding in taller gears and love to roll on the throttle. Im running a geomax on a 19" wheel and 16psi. I love the idea of the tubliss system because I always crave more traction. In the meantime could I run the tire I have at 10psi or maybe a little lower? I do have slime in the heavy duty tube for those nasty jumping cholla Cacti lol. Im just worried of pinching the tube when I hit those sharp edged ditches going 60mph haha.

    • @crosstrainingenduro
      @crosstrainingenduro  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Bradson Vogel air pressure is a tough one bradson, depends on your tire, weight, thickness of tube, type of terrain, how aggressively you ride. e.g. i ran my ultra heavy duty tube at 7psi happily because i don't aggressively, but guys who race enduro would probably want 15psi. TUbliss is handy as you can just drop it until you feel the rims hit on your worst impacts, then add 1 or 2 psi.

      Thank you for the reply! I have one place I ride and that is a loop around an entire mountain range with veins of trails that go to certain spots. Its an amazing ride full of sand washes, canal roads, cattle trails, tecnical! I know the trails by heart and the only thing stopping me is traction. I love the feeling when you pull out of a turn with perfect throttle! If you ever come to AZ hit me up we'll tear it up! Come in the winter though haha

    In the 1970s, when getting the parts you wanted was not so easy, I had accepted a trials type tire for my motocross bike b/c that was all i could get. At the track, on a rainy sloppy muddy day, I inadvertently aired down to 4 psi, which I thought was bad. I had no compressor of course, so went out for my Moto anyway. Holy carp, that thing felt like it was on rails and I was shocked. Though it was a happy accident, I hven’t tried modern tires in modern times of that category. Since I dual-sport to sand, I may try a pair next round. Thanks.

    • @crosstrainingenduro
      @crosstrainingenduro  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Interesting! Our group mostly run TUbliss now and we all use around 4psi... great grip with any brand or type of tyre. And even mostly worn out knobbies still perform in most situations.

    The Motoz Mountain Hybrid is by far the best all round dualsport or enduro tire I've ever run. Wear is incredible, close to double anything else I've run. Traction is awesome like a tractor as long as your easy on the throttle. I road ride 50 km on average to get to my riding area. Located on southern Vancouver Island with a good mix of terrain. Usually run 8psi road and bush. Very stable and quiet on pavement or highway with excellent grip unlike nobbies that tend to slip around under you especially if it's damp. Can't wait for a 17" so I can try it on my DR650.

      @crosstrainingenduro  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hi :)I'm thinking to put this tire on my dualsport 2016 husky fe350s. Eventually i'll put the extreme model but for now it's impossible to have one here in Quebec city,Canada. I run with tubliss, both rear and front. So,for dualsport riding with some serious enduro ride, did younrecommand it? And what could be the best match to put in the front?
    Merci mon ami :)

    • @crosstrainingenduro
      @crosstrainingenduro  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      there are so many variables with tires that i can't really make recommendations, monsieur frogg de enduro. :( but as per the vid i think it's not a bad choice for dual sport then can also be good for hard terrain IF you can get the air pressure down low with TUbliss.

      LOL, this must be just about the worst tire you can put on a CR500 :) This type of tire will pretty much only be useful on bikes with smaller engines since that do not spin the tire as easily. But I have seen one use a pure trials tire on a 700 2 stroke Maico with good sucsess but that bike was very happy to chug along at low rpms.

    great review mate, I like the idea that you can use this tyre on the road somewhat and still be awesome in the bush, personally I try not to ride on the road to keep tyres, but sometimes you may have to park your ute up stealth like behind some servo or such and road ride a few kays to your bush destination as to not look like a blatant suspect with a loading ramp hanging of the back, good grip, long lasting, what's not to like, I'll give one a go next, thanks for the review, your always honest, you always ride, nuff said!!

      +mad benny exactly benny, i reckon for guys who have to do some bitumen work for any reason with their dirt bike this tyre would be awesome. but for the guy always on dirt and mostly doing fast cruisy tracks i think the only real benefit over a knobby would be this could last four times longer...

    Mr. Morris, you may soon be hearing from my accountant... Once again, after watching your videos I am on the verge of spending too much money on my favorite Austrian. The truth is that directly due to your influence I have already sprung for a Motoz Hybrid rear and a GoldenTyre (yes, they're spelling it THAT way here!) GT 216 fat tire front! Actually this is the first time I've spent money based on your reviews. But it's certainly not the first time I've considered it! LOL!!
    After about 1600 miles, the first set of tires (not counting the stockers, which I pitched early on) is showing the effects of the abuse I've put them through. So it's not like I'm frivolously throwing money at the pumpkin princess (...this time...). That said, both those tire options are VERY expensive here! Oofdah. Almost as bad as buying a set of Sportmax II's for my FJR!

    • @crosstrainingenduro
      @crosstrainingenduro  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +gncc1race damn i feel guilty. i've got a new video coming about mindless consumerism that i hope will ensure everyone ignores any reviews i post lol! i'm hearing a lot about how expensive goldentyres are in the states because you have major brands that are SO cheap... in oz they are only about $20 more than the rest so it's not a big jump to these. be interested to see what you make of both tires, at least they should last for ages and not cost more in the long run.

    • @gncc1race
      @gncc1race 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +CROSS TRAINING, ENDUROCROSS & ENDURO TECHNIQUES Mindless consumerism?! You have my attention!
      Actually the hybrid was only about $10 more and the fat tire like $40 (!). The problem is that I had to buy them from two separate vendors that both have horrendous shipping rates. You'd be surprised how shipping rates to Alaska vary by supplier. That's the part that brings them on par with the street bike.

They do look a bit more aggressive than most other trials based tyres but i just don't know if they will cope with the mud

      +Merlin Maertz for slow technical riding it's a brilliant tyre, and i think some guys are making too much of the weight of the actual tyre given the advantages you get as a result, hey?

    • @merlinlepper
      @merlinlepper 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I love it. I'm totally into the slow and technical type of riding, mainly because of the challenge of it, but also because I can't go fast! :P So, for my purposes, it's the perfect tyre. I find it's exceptional in rocky creeks as it performs much like a trials tyre in that it leaves your bike way more stable than a regular knobbie would. The only time it really didn't work was in slippery wet mud on a clay base....but I don't think there's a tyre alive that can handle that condition well. The weight - yep, it's obscene, but I haven't noticed it's affect on the handling of the bike yet. The logical thing to do, would be to speed up the rebound/ slow down the compression a click or two, as the extra weight will generally make your suspension a little sluggish. I am looking forward to the next organised ride, where I'll be able to test it at speed. Otherwise, just ride it and get used to it, I say. I'm going to be running this one for a while, me thinks! :D

    Have you weighed this tire by itself? I have scoured the internet for the weight of this tire, but have gotten weights between 13 pounds and 16 pounds. What is the true weight?

    • @crosstrainingenduro
      @crosstrainingenduro  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      no idea but it is heavier than normal... a compromise you will always face for better wear and a stronger sidewall.

    • @r0ckworthy
      @r0ckworthy 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have a lightweight but very modestly-powered little trailbike, a 2007 CRF230F. I lust after this awesome Motoz trail/trials hybrid, but people's reviews on the internet have scared me away from it because they say it gives a substantial flywheel effect (which isn't always bad of course), and a substantial numbness added to the throttle response, since the engine has to overcome this extra rotational enertia. Since my bike has a very slow-revving, air-cooled, mild-feeling 18 HP engine already, I'm kind of scared away from this tire just for that reason. A similar, yet several-pounds-lighter tire is the Pirelli MT43 Pro trials/hybrid tire. It's supposed to be long-wearing with thick sidewalls too, but lighter. However I don't know just how much lighter! I have one of these Pirelli MT43 Pros on order right now being delivered to me (here in Oregon, USA). When it gets here I'm going to weigh it and then I'll publish the weight of it right here on this thread, so that those tire-weight-nerds like myself can compare it to their own. Hopefully someone will publish the weight of their killer Motoz hybrid rear also.

      +John Hailey anything you like john, but if you get something with stiff sidewalls it just means you can keep riding even if you have a puncture. a lot of us are using the goldentyre fatty which i have reviewed but there are plenty of other options too.

    So what about using a heavy duty tube with this tire?

    • @crosstrainingenduro
      @crosstrainingenduro  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Bridger Lambert you'd have to check on the forums, tubes get discussed there and guys run anything from 5 to 12psi with tubes. the TUbliss firms up the sidewalls so they tend to add 4psi or so in stiffness... so when i run zero it's probably the equivalent of 4psi with tubes.

    How would you compare the traction overall to the Goldentyre 216x 140/80/18. I have the that on the rear at 9 psi and the fat tire on the front at 10psi tubliss front and rear on a 2014 Husaberg fe 501. g2 throttle tamer to soften the bottom end for better traction in the slow technical stuff that I prefer and a rekluse that I know you guys don't approve of but been off the dirt for about 20yrs and need all the help I can get So far I've had Dunlop geomax 52s that were on it when I got it with just 20yrs on it horrible tires and then Michelin s12s front and rear better but not great. The Goldentyre fat tire front I think I'll stick with as I can't imagine a better front. Bought a couple of the 216x gummy since I didn't figure they'd last long. I'm 5'8 and about 220 in gear and wishing I had the beta seat height. terrain here in western Washington U.S is rocky rooted trees and sticky slippery wet clay when wet. Been back at it for about 3 months I try to ride for about an hour a day as I've got about 10 acres of mostly steep hillside behind my house got about 5 hours on the gummy and it still looks new. Got the 501 as a do it all bike dual sport, tight single track, super moto, and possibly timbersled snow bike. But it's a handful in the slow stuff. Better now with the throttle tamer but thinking I might need a beta to go with it

    • @crosstrainingenduro
      @crosstrainingenduro  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Darin L i'm sure i'll be back on a rekluse one day when the arthritis kicks in enough. :) interesting idea, comparing the GT216X to the motoz hybrid. in many types of terrain i'd say the grip is very similar. the only real problem with the GT216X was fairly fast wear even on our slow technical rides, and there were some conditions where those ultra flexible knobs just bent over instead of providing a nice hard edge to dig in e.g. certain types of mud. how is the GT216X working for you in clay? i found it pretty useless because of that last point.

    • @Trad-Am
      @Trad-Am 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      So far it's been the best tire I've had in all conditions. If you can keep them from clogging up with the sticky wet clay. I'm sure they clean out fine with more speed but it's too tight on my little training course for that. Been experimenting with silicone spay and a product called never wet that is a silicone based product. It seems to last about 3 hours before it starts sticking and clogging up the tire again I use it on the rest of the bike also makes cleaning much easier. But my experience with new tires is limited to what I listed as I'm just getting back into dirt riding and all of your videos have helped allot. I'm a fanatical bacountry mountain snowmobiler we ride same type of terrain tight trees creek bottoms and hill climbs sidehilling is the only part that's completely different. This last season there was no snow and decided it was time for some dirt throttle therapy again. Take a look at some of Chris Burandts you tube stuff he's our Graham Jarvis of the snomobile world. I don't know if you guys get any snow down there to ride. But if not if you ever make it too the U.S. I keep a spare bacountry snomobile Or you can go have a complete professional training session with Chris Burandt at Burandts bacountry adventure. I warn you though it's just as addicting as dirt riding. Looking forward to your opinions and reviews on different products. I'm already on Goldentyre from you steg pegs and fastway pegs both work just as described and have helped out allot and I think a clake2 is in my near future. Keep em coming!

      we actually do get snow in our alps further south and have a pile of ski fields down there but nothing very high, most mountains are only around 6000 feet at most. sounds like some awesome riding out your way. :)

    • @Trad-Am
      @Trad-Am 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The highest we have here to ride is Mt baker. About 4000 all the way up to the summit at 11,000 But that's only for the snowmobiles once the snow melts the tree huggers take over. We do have some good riding for dirt but some of them can be a bit of a drive and they try and take more and more from us every year for wilderness land. But there's still good riding from sea level all the way up to about 7500ft. We're coming into fall the best part of the year to go dirt riding in the mountains not as hot and dusty!

      +CROSS TRAINING, ENDUROCROSS & ENDURO TECHNIQUES - I live and ride in the PNW (Pacific Northwest USA or Pacific North WET as we prefer to call it) and have been running regular Trials tires for gosh...15 years before it was the thing to do (Michelin is my fave). Your observations are SPOT on, (the bad) braking from speed - not so good, higher speed she floats and isn't confidence inspiring at all, straight line drive only (no spin and slam riding with the trials tire. (the awesome) Wet rocks and roots and just snotty trails at slow speed, YEARS of use sticky even when worn out - so in those situations you Cant touch em. My son just purchased one of the Motoz mostly based on your review here and other web comments, so we will see if it addresses some of the weaknesses of the trials tire, but based on your attention to detail on the video I am pretty sure I will get a bunch of thumbs up on the tire and about $100 out of my wallet when I order one and slap it on my '15 TE300 (also ONLY run the Tubliss system offload - ONLY thing on my rear rims). thanx again, have shared this vid with some of my riding buds as well. Cheers!

      @crosstrainingenduro  9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Scott Lind great info, thanks scott! from what you've said i think you'll like the motoz although it is a much harder compound so in some cases you'll notice the lack of grip relative to a trials tire. i get very hesistant about doing tire reviews because i can't really assess them from a fast rider's perspective but i think most should realize it's from a cross training angle. :)
