- Just a little video I made in my spare time. Its a little rough and messy but it gets to the point.. I hope it helps
Sorry for all the typo's and mistakes in the video. This is just a quick example of methods used to make a car in SketchUp.
sketchup.google...
Here is a SU model tutorial I made:

Here is a link to a great site for blueprints:

ive had sketchup for about 4 months and have only used it a handful of times and im succesfully creating an Ford XB Falcon thanks to this great tutorial. it just requires a sense of logic when you dont understand something and dont be scared of it all!
I totally agree. 90% of what I know about SU is self taught. I never read anything before starting use in this program. Most other 3D programs there are hundreds of pages of instructions on how to make something quite simple, with SU it only takes a few steps and the only knowledge about 3D modeling you need is the final design you want and a few hours of playing with the common tools inside SU
Dude, I am not here to learn how to make this, but just wanted to see what people can do with Sketchup, really you are talented, you should be proud of yourself, you get thumbs up.
Excellent tutorial. It is exactly what I was looking for. I'm not interested in drawing super cars for assets in an architectural rendering.
I don't know what advice I could give except dont try to make the parts individually but make them as a whole, make the body as a singular and then separate the bits of mesh up so you can make them into separate parts. This allows you to create a clean flow of mesh. I hope you work it out, good luck!
Copy all of the mesh and move it to one side, make sure that the copied mesh is selected. Right-click, Flip, and then choose the direction. You can then move this mesh into place. Sometimes the joint mesh doesnt quite join, select the mesh in the centre and choose to "intersect with selected"
Amazing, I've thought of doing a car but it seems a little to hard. I'm amazed how you've done this with SketchUp, I thought I was good.
dont quit! and you shouldnt have a attitude like that! you probobly good at something! and sketch up is easy after a while.
You can use the move tool to join end points. Just select the end point, edge or whatever you want to move and click where you want it to go
Well, it is a Scorpio, but the two models were very similar. They both shared Fords global design facia and had a very similar shaped body. One major difference to note is the rear end. The American Taurus shared the same front end looks as both those cars, along with the Australia Falcon. All quite good looking cars for their time, IMO
@mariocbase You can go into Windows>Model Info>Units. Set your units and length snapping there. I use metric so i set it to 1mm snapping, but if i wish to do small scale objects that would require smaller snapping i just scale up my model, sometimes working on a model at a 10:1 scale
Wow! Awesome! I really had no idea how I could make a car on SketchUp. Now, I have some idea. Thanks!
Hey guys, the key is to try everything on your own. If you see a tool that you don't know the meaning of, try it on your model. Just press " Ctrl+Z" to Undo. This is the best and the fastest way to learn. Sketchup is supposed to be the Easiest 3-D program.
If you got file> import and select the file format box youll see a dropdown menu with different import formats. Choose the format of you image. If your image isnt supported just use a basic image tool (such as Paint or Photoshop) to save the image as a different format.
Otherwise, if it is a supported format just choose import or drag and drop it into the SU window.
You have to use polygons to create faces. Try and create a triangle with the pencil tool and youll see this in progress. It happens as long as there is a flat place between connected lines....A polygon
@RogueAutomotive Well, it is available on Bunkspeeds website as "Shot", but it costs money. The older version is available on pirate sites (i personally prefer the older version, a lot simpler) although illegal. They don't provide the older version so the only option is to pirate it
@shahzebamin Well, drawing in SU is simply creating straight lines. But you can use the Draw>freehand tool.
I also have a model with step by step instruction son how to model and troubleshoot modeling a car, just like this one. It also has a help section where you can get some very useful modeling tips to help increase workflow and make SU more functional and enjoyable. The link to that is now added to the description
@shahzebamin you can download bezier tools plug in so you can make curvy line like in photoshop (pen tool) , just search in google or sketchucation (register first-free)
Well, the first step to making a good model is knowing what you want to make. You need to find yourself some good reference images and possibly some blueprints if they are available. I can only suggest practice as I was once one of these people who didnt even know how to display edges in a model. Its very easy to learn SU and if you have some spare time to practice and learn I am always available to chat. I can be contacted in a number of ways. Just e-mail me any time if you need help.
Ooo! Ooo! A Merkur XR4Ti (Ford Serria). :) I'm a Fan of the RS500 myself.
If you copy the mesh you can then choose to flip from the rightclick menu.
Rogue, thank you very, very much for posting this. quite easy to follow, and now that I think about it, it's got to be the easiest method to model a vehicle.
Might I ask, how long, in real time, did that take you?
If you find it hard, then I can only suggest you have more practice in SketchUp. No one can expect to jump straight into SU and start modelling like a Pro. It is very much like any other 3D modelling program, it may be completely different in the input but it takes time to learn how to use it too.
This is about as simple as accurate car modelling gets.
i will follow this tutorial when i have time to make a car in sketchup ready to upload to gmod and then start making tonnes of cars using sketchup
lol yeah, exactly what I thought. Making a car was the reason I downloaded SketchUp, but then I had to realize how hard it is - so I'll just stick with some easier stuff for now.
You right click the selected mesh and click " Flip Along" and then select the direction.
@CarlTalbot94 I do plan to eventually make that particular Mondeo but I can only suggest, for now, that you practice a little more
You make it look so easy... is this one perfectly shown in 3D warehouse 3Dview?
@edtylerg It really is. Compared to some of the more complex methods this is child's play. There are easier ways of modelling cars but most don't allow as much mesh flexibility or accuracy and detail.
@sporemax7950 I selected all the mesh.. CTRL and drag> right click, flip along axis> move into place
I assume you are talking about importing images? SU supports a few image formats, just goto file, import and youll be able to see what formats it supports.
Select the edges and use the move tool while holding CTRL
mann, too much work! awesome!
hey the scorpio i put in RoR, great to see how its made.
good work.
@capidecallu Scorpio not Sierra
...That is one of the very basic things you would learn if you actually tried. It is very basic; select the mesh you wish to smooth, right click and then choose soften/smooth
People use SketchUp because its easy, fast and you dont need to read 100 pages of nonsensical cr@p just to figure out how to do anything. With SU all you do is download, install and start using. People who use Zmod are mainly game modders, its used mainly for preparing models for game.
great work, but if it this you know easy then how come all the cars (69' chargers mostly) are always so scrued up? all so i have been working on a consept mod for a jeep, if i send you picks can you make it?
I can suggest using the move and scale tools to try to clean things up a bit. If you contact me directly than I would be able to provide more in depth information
@stefanocelsi Well, yes, SU is easy compared to 3DS MAX or Maya, but SketchUp is for architecture and creating models quickly for presentation. Where SU is free, you have to pay overly ridiculous amounts of money for the likes of 3DS. If you’re using SU, however, you don’t need all the extras you pay for in 3DS. Try telling me making a car with 500,000+ polys and accurately is easy in SU...
@THODNA I think maybe 2-3 hours, I can't really remember, it was a long time ago. Nowadays I do spend a LOT more time on my models, often more then 50! I still use a very similar method to this when it comes to modelling from a single drawing of a design, although results seem to vary a bit. I really should make a new video some time but seem to always screw it up 8(
this is bit tough but shortest method to make a realistic car!
What is the name of the tool you used to "warp" the outlines of the model? Thanks!
@sk84life231 Anything you want! I would suggest something from the 80's or the 20 or so years preceding it, simple designs usually mean an easier model.
how did you mirror the side you made because im working on a car atm and i need to do that
@wah513 There are a few good programs, I personally use Hypershot
Just use an image search tool and search for the type of blueprint you want
Wow good job. Why didn't you use one of the skinning rubys?
I assume you mean the draw tool? I can't think of any other tool I may have used to do what you describe
Oop. That's right. Those were great cars. The BMW 3-series of their day.
how do you select edges and make faces between them?
@offroad259 If you need a little more basic help, I suggest you go to the help files in SketchUp, they are very useful
Please tell to me which one is more easy to create like this ( car models / toys ) using google skechup or 3Dmax or Cinema4D ?
simehong2000 3d max
@TheSpeedula Well, it is for beginners, it’s about as simple as accurate modelling gets
Well, I'm going to need more information than that. . . I find this to be about as straight forward as it comes, so, what seems to be the problem?
If you just straight dont understand, than take a further look at my other tutorial videos
I have a question, how do you get the blueprints in sketchup?, i mean i got the .jpg file, then how?
Drag and drop the file into SketchUp or choose: File> Import and choose the file type
Yeah, a couple of hours. Working was a bit slower as processing power was lost from using a screen recorder
can u make model a Subaru BRZ in 3Ds Max or Zmodeler please hope you make tutorials
How do you make the lines invisible?
great tut. thx for sharing.
@redXsketch When I made this video I had been using SketchUp for about a year or more, nothing major, just hobby work
@nfsfan475 If you mean the blueprints, read the description
@RogueAutomotive from where i can download hypershot..???
@DjMana1993 Thanks, it's nice to hear the occasional comment like that.
good....very impressive
can anyone help me, where i can find rendering software for google sketchup 8 models....plzzz reply
thanks for agreeing, my sketchup nickname is "desibhaji punjab wale", please take a look at my lamborghini miura (there's only 4-5 Miuras in the warehouse so it won't take a lot of time to find)
hey bro when i done from it then i want to put in a game Grand Theft Auto IV if you know the game how to do that ??
nice work!
where did you get your file from?
hey bro if you interested in Grand Theft Auto IV when i done from modelin the car how then i put the car that i model it in the game Grand Theft Auto IV if you know the game please replay me for how to make it work in the game ??
Pretty awesome I must say;)
You are a great modeler, but no ofense, final result looks like a cartoon car, how to fix that and make model more realistic?
how to mirror on #6?
This was made with SU6.
@justforVIDEOSqmz I have answered your question in the comments below
Well, I guess its because there are so many people who use it, that dont know how to model properly, and wouldnt bother to take correct measurements. That would mean they would all be out of proportion and it would just make Google Earth look bad.
This is skill
how can you mirror
The "file" is juat an image...anyone knows where to get images from on the internet; Just ues Google!
Thanks! I'm making a smallville game :)
gta 4 doesnt support sketchup files, you can convert it in 3ds max than load it in zmodeler than into gta 4
I have to agree
Well, a Scorpio, but they are very similar.
you must be good at making cars, you can maby make cars and put it in to rigs of rods!
Great to tutorial!
@RogueAutomotive
oooh okay THANKS A LOT
how to import those pictures?
Thanks
show very good car
did u say simple?
great job but looks very complicated to do
the only problem is it is NOT FOR BEGINNERS i made up my own way fo my latest car
OMG! ... view> edge style> display edges
thanks :D
is it a ford sierra ?XD
Thanks, I assume so
@glupan4 Just add more detail, or use a different technique. This is very "simple", as the title says. Itl take a lot more time and effort to make it look realistic
what you are colling sketch up hard why don't you try maya or 3ds max that is the real deal ...sketch up is for begginers
