great and uplifting review. finally someone who sees the value in this camera and not its weaknesses (if there are any...). so many people complained and gave so much criticism. in the end it is a personal choice, but only because one person thinks one way does not mean another person thinks like minded. so thank you for this very valuable video!
I bought the 6D mk 2 a couple of months ago for £1300 in a sale. It enbaled me to carry on using my EF lenses as I used to have an old 5D mk2. It was the best value full frame new body IMO and I love it. It takes fab photos and as I'm not into video, those shortcomings don't affect me at all. I love the flippy screen and the wifi tech. Feels like a proper upgrade from my 5D. I don't feel the need to go mirrorless at all and anyway, the equivalent is a fair bit more money.
6D mkII is my main camera, and I agree - full frame vs pixel count is perfect. I sort of disagree about low light noise, but the dynamic range is great, uses all my lenses (bought to go with my 1DS and 20D) without problems. I was thinking about the R5, but I'm sticking with the 6D for now.
Thanks for your thoughts Alan. Even now with a range of mirrorless at my disposal, I still find myself reaching for the 6dii on occassion. I just enjoy using it.
Thanks for the review, Dave. This was very helpful because I am going to be switching over to Canon, primarily because of the articulating screen and the live histogram. I can't afford the higher-level professional models such as the Nikon D850s of the world so I have been thinking about this camera, the RP and the 90D. I was leaning toward the 90D before this video but my lean might be a little bit more toward the 6D now. Whether I chose the 6D or the 90D I am looking forward to a fresh start. I have a SL2/200D that I use primarily for video but on my recent trip I used it a lot for stills and I loved the flexibility the articulating screen gave me and being able to see the histogram in live view.
Thanks Walter. I've had hands on with all of those cameras and they are all decent. The 90d strength definitely does lie within it video capabilities, which are much better than the 6dii. But as you would expect from a full frame camera, the 6dii far outperforms it from a photography perspective. The Canon RP is more or less exactly the same camera as the 6dii in relation to a lot of the specs, it has the 6dii sensor, same dynamic range, resolution etc. The RP has the mirrorless features such as seeing your exposure and I think is very reasonably priced. The choice between those two cameras come down to things like battery life, size and ergonomics as these are the main differences....plus as I mentioned in the video, the budget for lenses. Although you can get an adaptor for the mirrorless for around $100 which works seamlessly allowing EF lenses to be used on the RF system, opening up the huge array of options for the EF mount.
My first DSLR was the Canon 20D (Crop) end later on I bought the 5D mk2 (full frame). Still use that today. Never want to go back to crop sensor. The DoF control is such a nice option to have....even a thing to get used to if you have fast lenses (f2.8 or faster). Own a couple of L lenses now (24-70L and 70-200 IS L) end a few very fast primes (50 & 85 f1.8 and 24 f2.8 IS) So am slowly looking around to replace my mk2 (before EF mount bodies are completely gone). Probably sooner or later will also go to the 6D mk2 since the 5d mk4 is above budget, RP with an adaptor does not appeal to me.
Great video. I’m a Canon shooter, mostly crop sensor though. I’m not in a rush to get into mirrorless, as I want something more than 20 megapixels (so no R6), and frankly I don’t want to spend $$$ for the R5. So, here’s my question. Being that there is a huge secondhand lens market right now for a DSLR, is it worth getting a 6D II in 2021? I regularly print up to 20x30 inches with a 77D, no problem, but kinda pushing the limit. Hoping to bump up my prints to 24x36 or so, and I’m thinking the couple of extra megapixels plus the larger sensor (bigger pixel size) would serve me well.
I would say 2021 is the perfect time to buy a DSLR. As you mention, right now, the masses are crowding around mirrorless, making DSLR's much reduced in price. But these cameras were great cameras before mirrorless and nothing new changes that, they're still great cameras. As for printing, there is no doubt that the 6dii is a vastly superior camera in terms of pixel quality to the 77d. This roughly translates to a little over twice the size of pixel. As printing is effectively a process of enlarging pixels and translating to dots, the better the quality of the pixel, the better quality of print. I have sold several prints from the 6d mark ii at 24 x 36 and the quality has always been apparent. Hope this is helpful, feel free to ask if anything else :)
@@LetsClickPhotography thank you for your reply. I've never bought into pixel peeping, hard and fast formulas for what megapixels produce what size, etc. That doesn't mean that I don't like to hone my craft, or work on my skills. I'm in my infancy when it comes to photography, and I recognise that. However if I'm able to print and sell 20"x30" images with a 24 megapixel crop sensor, I'm sure I can do better with a 26 megapixel full frame, that not only has more AND larger pixels, but is better in low light as well. I do intend on getting into a Canon mirrorless system at some point, if and when they release perhaps an updated R, around 30 megapixels. The bulk of my photos are historic sites, really no wildlife or sports, so I'll be okay in the DSLR sphere for a while. Very detailed review Dave. The quality of the images certainly looks great and the built-in GPS is an interesting feature. I used to use one at work and didn't even know it had that! All about Nikon for me these days though. 🙂
Thanks Robert.....and mentioning Nikon, that new release, the Zfc, actually had me taking note - so good to see one of the big 2 release a camera that actually has style - let's face it Canon and Nikons are nothing to look at. I gotta admit, this is the only one of my cameras that I feel a bit personally attached to - the other cameras for me are just workhorses, bought for work purposes.....but this was my camera purchase (if that makes sense) and it got me going on the road to full time so yeah I'm a bit biased towards it. I've definitely got a load more video and photos that would be worthy of putting in this one from the camera but I'm still migrating everything over from PC to Mac and haven't catalogued it all properly yet. Always appreciate you watching mate, I know this isn't really your kinda content, so it must be painful to sit through, especially realising the mistakes you've made in your camera brand choice hahaha Kidding mate - no dig intended at the others - they all do the same job :)
Hello There, great review!! I'm currently using a Rebel T7 with the Niftyfifty 🙌🏼 looking to upgrade. Will this camera be beneficial for product photography?
Hi there, absolutely. I use the 6dii for most of my product work and you will find that upgrading from the T7 will offer you so much, the leap to the 6dii level is very noticeable, even though the T7 is a very decent camera in itself for its level.
@@LetsClickPhotography Agreed the Rebel is decent camera. Definitely did the job for me. Doing more homework I'm torn between 6d, EOS RP and possibly the R6.
RP is decent, same sensor as 6dii - watch out for battery life though - it's poor compared to 6dii. R6 is amazing, I have one and it is game changer for anything that moves - people, animals, actions shots etc....for product photography it doesn't offer anything extra though. You can't go wrong with any of them really - you'll need three batteries for the RP for every one of the 6d (R6 2 batteries) and other than that just price variants really.
@@paulcarter5787 im at the same spot you are man. I got a t7 with the stock lenses and a 50mm. I wanted the R6 or even the eos r with the L lens but it costs a lot and at that price I feel like if your not making money with it then you shouldn’t be spending that much on a camera. I feel like the 6d is way more reasonable and I only want it for car photography so I’m leaning towards it the more I hear about it.
I’ve been thinking of going back to a DSLR, maybe a 6d ii or a 5d iii, possibly leaning towards the 5d iii as that way I’ll be able to still keep my Fuji Xt3 due to the used prices of the 5d iii lately
Great vid Dave, my buddy shoots with a 6Dii and loves it. He takes some wicked shots too. I almost went with it a couple years back, but in the end ended up switching to Sony A7iii. Awesome camera though, was hard to beat the value when it came out.

Just back from a long weekend away and catching up on what I’ve missed which in this case is a thoroughly detailed review and feature précis Dave. As you know I’m Nikon but nonetheless always happy to listen to your thoughts and views. My Nikon also has built in GPS which seems to be a waning feature these days ( I believe because of the drain on the battery) but I find it so useful. Couldn’t bring myself to give you a thumbs down either !!
It's true about the GPS, it's a feature missed off much of the mirrorless world - I imagine as you mention, because of the drain on battery - but even my 5div doesn't have it. Personally I think it's a really useful feature and with the right power saving settings (at least on the 6dii) doesn't have too much of a detrimental effect on battery life. I hope you had a great weekend away....you're making the most of this years freedoms :) Thanks Andrew
I think if you have great glass on it there is no limit for your photography i shoot birds and wildlife using tamron 600 mm i had very good results i like it that i have to challenge myself rather than the camera makes everything easy

I'm not sure why the 6d mkII attracted so much flak, it seems a capable camera. I suppose the 5D mkIV was seen as the holy grail of Canons in the same way the D850 was seen in Nikon terms as the camera to have and everything else in the range falls short even if they're perfectly good cameras. Good review, I was almost tempted to buy a Canon!!!😯
The flak it received was two fold really - you're spot on that the 5div is the love child of many a Canon shooter and so it got compared to that one - 'it's not built the same, it has less resolution, it's only got one card slot' etc funnily though on all the reviews I saw at the time, no-one seemed to mention the fact that (at that point) the 6dii was around £1400 less than the 5div. And secondly because whilst it improved on the original 6d in almost every aspect, it has (very) slightly less dynamic range. But this was done so the Dual Pixel focus system could be added to the camera which was a huge step up in focus system over the original. Nevertheless those were the headline grabs and therefor what everyone concentrated on. I must admit that this is the only one of my cameras that I feel a bit attached to - as probably comes across haha Thanks for watching Andrew I really appreciate it :)
@@LetsClickPhotography i haven't decided what will i do ... I mostly do photography and sometimes videography ...if i look at overall use what should i buy ?
@@thegallant7152 In that case then the 6d mark ii. The pros of owning that Canon 6d ii are far greater than the pros of the 90d. It is a better all rounder. I would only recommend the 90d over it if the main use was for video.
I agree Irfan, but Canon are unlikely to do that as this would also force them to reduce the prices of the cameras below and above the 6dii and they are not known for doing that. Best purchases can be had during Canon cash back periods or on the used market - buying used from a reputable dealer and should get a decent used warranty too.
@@irfanrahman394 Have you thought about the Canon RP? You can pick up these at a price of circa 1200-1300 USD with a 24-105mm kit lens included (body only around 1100 USD). Buy a couple of extra batteries and a R-EF lens adapter (if you have EF or EF-S lenses) and it could work out and be within your budget. Of course it is a mirrorless so if you prefer DSLR then it is no go but it has exactly the same sensor in it as the 6d mark ii and only a few features less.
I currently own 6d mark II and no matter how I expose, if the environment has a lot of contrasting areas, there's a ton of noise in every picture. When exposing for highlights, it's basically impossible to recover the shadows without having ton of noise in them and if I expose for the shadows, the highlights are unrecoverable as well. There's no middle ground to this camera, the dynamic range is beyond awful. Even bracketing doesn't work, as merged photos get this horrible purple, green colour cast over highlights and shadows. Also, the video quality on 6d II is comparable to a 300$ phone camera.
Honestly that isn't my experience of this camera at all. It almost sounds like you are shooting in JPEG and trying to process them - I'm not saying that is the case, but that would be comparable to what you are describing. In my many years experience of shooting and talking to people about photography I can say that most issues are user generated but, as somebody else points out, if you feel that you know what you are doing with photography and it isn't an issue with your technique and skill, then it may well be worth getting it checked out as for photography this camera is very very capable......for video - yeah it's not great
I disagree with the praise for that camera. For me it was a total disappointment. Photo quality is great. Very good indeed. But unfortunately the video quality is disappointing. I would call it "junk" quality. The difference between photo quality and video quality is huge. I would really like Canon to exchange my 6D MarkII for another model. I can't accept that an expensive device like this can disappoint a user of so many years so much. I follow Canon since my FTB. I went through ElanIIE, T90, etc. I was a Canon fan boy. Today I am moving to Sony as I was tremendously annoyed by Canon's video quality. You have to be honest to comment on this. Hermano, from Brazil. See: th-cam.com/video/EhxU7MjMN80/w-d-xo.html 🙃
Thanks Hermano - I actually just watched that video you linked. Seems like the guy agrees with what I state. The 6dii is a fantastic camera for photography and is 'ok' for everyday video. It's all about your personal use scenario really. Would I recommend the 6dii for serious filmmakers - no (it's a long time since I created this video but I'm fairly certain that is what I say in it too), would I recommend it to photographers who aren't interested in video or who just want to capture some everyday video for something like 1080 you tube or home video - yes.....plus you have to be accountable to the price of the camera too - for a full frame camera, the 6dii is one of the cheapest dslr (at time of release) around, so I suppose the compromise was in the area of video. I do agree with you on the Sony. I have used Sony footage and it is so much better, if you are video first, I could absolutely see why you go the Sony route. Thanks for your comment Hermano - Dave.
Well maybe you should have done more homework as all these camera models have strong and weak features. That falls on you imo, not the camera you chose.
This camera is begging for the magic lantern treatment. I'm sure it could do a lot more and Canon crippled it to protect the sales of the 5d iv considering smaller sensors with older processors can do 4k 30 just fine.

I must admit that this is the only one of my cameras that I feel a bit attached to - as probably comes across haha Thanks for watching Andrew I really appreciate it :)
Quite simply, the upgrades from 6D were miniscule & sad
So, should i buy 90d or 6d mark 2 ?
If your main aim is photography the 6dii every time. If your main aim is video then the 90d
@@LetsClickPhotography okay ... Thanku so much 💕..now i am very clear 😁

I have been very happy with my Canon 6D Mark II.
Me too Jeff - I think it's a cracking camera. Thanks a lot :)
Our life is complete 🏆
So, I take it you’re a fan of the Canon 6D? 🤣🤣
haha is it really that obvious ;)
I love it
Hang on a just moment! Aren't the 'Thumbs-Up' & 'Thumbs-Down' buttons for rating this video (& NOT the camera)? 🤣
It is overpriced ... Price should go down
I agree Irfan, but Canon are unlikely to do that as this would also force them to reduce the prices of the cameras below and above the 6dii and they are not known for doing that. Best purchases can be had during Canon cash back periods or on the used market - buying used from a reputable dealer and should get a decent used warranty too.
@@LetsClickPhotography like i have a budget of 1600usd and im not able to fix what to buy
@@LetsClickPhotography the place i live only the body costs 1300usd only ...... Eos rp vs 6d m2 im confused
@@irfanrahman394 I just bought a used 6d ii in mint condition with box for total $1170. 6 months ago I bought used 24-105mm lens for around $425.
Good Evening, Great #canon6d2 Video, thanks for sharing, have a great weekend
I currently own 6d mark II and no matter how I expose, if the environment has a lot of contrasting areas, there's a ton of noise in every picture. When exposing for highlights, it's basically impossible to recover the shadows without having ton of noise in them and if I expose for the shadows, the highlights are unrecoverable as well. There's no middle ground to this camera, the dynamic range is beyond awful. Even bracketing doesn't work, as merged photos get this horrible purple, green colour cast over highlights and shadows. Also, the video quality on 6d II is comparable to a 300$ phone camera.
I'd say get it checked out
Honestly that isn't my experience of this camera at all.
Mine is soft. Like really soft! Its not an underated photo. Its rubish
