Thank You Lauren and Mark for the knowledge of Bees in Alaska ! They sure did work hard to dig out the place for the hives... great job guys ! Very Interesting .. can’t wait for updates on them . Have a good day to all !!
There's an orange grove behind my apartment and I've watched the beekeepers set out boxes with bees. Let me tell you that the orange blossom honey is the absolute best. There are also cactus along the fence line and the people who pick the fruit cut down the cactus to take home to eat. I find the whole process very interesting. I enjoyed hearing first hand you and Mark breaking the process down for everyone to better understand
Ive always wanted to raise bees. Not that I would do it for a love of honey. Im just fascinated by them. Ive loved them for as long as i can remember. Im glad you're doing a video on getting ready and starting the project. I live in Oregon and a lot of people raise them here. You're so lucky to have the opportunity to do this. You're showing your kids so many opportunities to learn new things. Good luck

Thank you for your informative video. We are beekeepers in south east Queensland, Australia. Our winter isn't really that cold, especially compared to yours. Bee's are amazing creatures, my daughter absolutely loves them, grows wildflowers every year so the Bee's have food sources, since she found out they endangered! She asked me since she watched this video with me, if you guys feel guilty knowing that so many Bee's die cause of Alaska cold weather, knowing you choose to bring them there and it not there normal home? Love your families positive attitude with the compact snow!
Hi Sarah. I am glad you enjoyed the video with your daughter. We do our best to keep the bees a live over the winter but its not a guarantee, even with the best beekeepers. We feel sad when they don't survive but we know that bees die even in perfect conditions of California. It's still always sad when a whole hive dies at once.

Good Afternoon Hamm Family ❤️ Bees... hmmm... I have a love-hate relationship with bees. I love watching them at work collecting nectar, their importance to our environment, and the delicious honey they provide. I hate the memory, at age 10 or 11, when I accidentally ran into a natural hive while playing hide n seek with friends. So many stings. So much pain. A trip to the ER, but luckily not being allergic. The cats love watching them from the window, chattering up a storm; while Maggie has yet to learn that catching a bee in her mouth is painful and results in a swollen snoot and mouth, and a long Benadryl nap 🐝 We thought about raising bees, but decided against it. We have so many apiaries, and a beekeeping school, in our area and a co-op that carries local honey. We get our honey from an apiary up the road (mostly) and the co-op... delicious... and great for my allergies and for immune support. I love my honey both in its traditional syrupy form and the creamier form... and don't forget the honeycomb... a nice little treat. A piece of toasted bread, a little butter and a generous amount of honey is good for the taste-buds and the mood🍯 Love seeing all the work smarter not harder mindset and dedication preparing for the new arrival. Do you get wax moths in Alaska? Your drawn comb looks to be in good shape. A good trick for removing your sugar water can is to use a big magnet. I just learned that this year and it's a game changer.
Our spring is still pretty cold and there is no natural food for them yet. Farmers will have to feed them until the weather improves. Not much out there for bears coming out of hibernation either.

Wd it be helpful to have the boxes in a dog run? I don’t know anything about bears but wd it be protection? And chain link wd allow the Beas a way to come and go.

Great video! Very fascinating to learn so much about honey bees..silly question, do you encounter problems with bee poo on your cars? We had keepers near us once & all the cars in our neighborhood were getting poo'd on and it was hard to scrub off...I heard it can be bad for the paint.
That is an interesting question. I don't remember having them poop on our cars but I could see how that could be a problem if there were a lot of hives. I will keep an eye out this year.
That is a tricky question. A queen bee can live up to 5 years but typically 1-3 years. The spring bees worker bees live about 2-6 weeks. The Fall bees have to be tougher and can live up to 20 to get them through the winter. The drone ( boy bees) live up to 55 day. Probably more than you wanted to know but…there you have it.
Wow,that was a great video,I learned a lot about these amazing creatures.I have a question for you or Mark,If the queen dies ,does the whole colony die? Thanks ,Hi from Ontario🇨🇦🍯🇺🇸
If the queen dies and there is a new queen forming we will let it hatch, but that takes some time. We have had a queen die in the past and were thankfully able to buy a new queen and put it in the box.
I have always wanted to keep bees 🐝 but I am severely allergic been in icu for a week for singular bee sting once and life flighted once from singular bee sting so husband and mom tell me I am not allowed to have any that is more than enough excitement for them those two experiences may you have an abundance of honey and wax

YUMMMM!!!!
wow! you learn something every day☺ can you store them inn your garage next fall/winter?

I did not know Alaska does not have Honey Bees. So interesting. How do you keep the simple syrup (food)from freezing?
It is warm enough during the day and the boxes are insulated. Haven't had it freeze.
I love honey, but seriously allergic to wasp's & Bee's, that I have to carry a epipen😮 but it was very interesting to watch x

We will strap them down soon! Bears will be out soon as it warms up.
Set your hard honey jar in a pan of warm water on the stove and it will in time look like the syrup again.
Yes!
double screen board, check out bob binnie bee keeper videos. hes a big honey seller in georgia. I am in Portland, so wet and cold, but not like alaska.
The honey that have been crystallized put the whole jar in warm water to turn the honey back to there color.
We could but it is sooooo good the way it is. It also loses some valuable nutrients if you warm it up. Either way, it is amazing!
So every year you have to reorder your entire everything?? There isn’t a way to maintain a small population in a 5 frame hive in a small barn and overwinter them?
Wd it be helpful to have the boxes in a dog run? I don’t know anything about bears but wd it be protection? And chain link wd allow the Beas a way to come and go.
That is an idea! We used to have a dog run for our chickens but that has been many years. A little bear fence and some straps should do the trick.
Try putting an electric fence wire around your boxes to keep bear from destruction
We plan on it this year.
Sounds like this honey will end up costing more than a jar from the grocery store. 🤣🤣🤣
Well, we can sell some and break even but the taste is SO superior!

The Fall bees have to be tougher and can live up to 20 to get them through the winter. The drone ( boy bees) live up to 55 day. Probably more than you wanted to know but…there you have it.
So do you have to get new bees every year or how long do they last?
So there is no place in Alaska where we can purchase bee? They have to be shipped from out of state? Tia
Yes, they come from California mostly.
After you harvest the honey do the Bees die or do they live on??
We can feed them honey and try to winter them over, but it is not a guarantee they will live. We do our best to winter them over.
@@ThisAlaskaLife Thank you for explaining it to me this is my first experience watching y’all bee harvest
What do you do with all the honey.
Eat it and share it! Keep it for food storage.
Ahu ………..You missed a stop😂😅😅😂😊 jk
