What a gift Dr. Terrence Roberts is to us all. I've been sitting here in anger over the FL shooting, Fani Willis possible removal, and other injustices Black and Brown people endure day in and day out, while just trying to live life. Dr. Roberts inspired me to hang on for another day.
Great Interview. American denial of its own history is so damaging to themselves and to the rest of the world. American exceptionalism is a myth and a monstrosity.
I'm a teacher in Little Rock and anecdotally I can tell you that most teachers are fed up with our political "leaders" and this decision about AP African American Studies is absolutely disgusting. It highlights how a certain party has completely committed to anti-intellectualism and they are no longer attempting to disguise their racists motivations.
This man & Ms Minniejean are a part of history. It wasn’t that long ago, yet there are people that are already trying to rewrite their story. It’s disrespectful. Just like what they are trying to do to the Tulsa Massacre survivors.
It is heartbreaking that, decades later, we’re still having to fight racists attitudes. But fight we must, because love, freedom and fairness must prevail.
Seeing the photo of the Little Rock 9 being escorted into the high school, by the National Guard, is an ugly sight. That female governor, of Arkansas, wants to go back to these ugly days.
The perfect summary of history being a necessity in EDUCATION! The vanity and perversion of the truth by the greedily driven seekers of power in politics is the bane of humanity!
Although I'd like to think that they don't agree with racism, a majority of Americans don't stand up against the suppression of non-whites, LBTQ etc. Are they afraid of becoming an outcast themselves or should we think that the majority of Americans are racists in the core of their being?
I believe that the majority of Americans are sick and tired of the hate, the prejudice and the pure ignorance of the magat cult. The hateful Donald dumpster needs a very long prison sentence, hopefully for the rest of his sorry life. As do his corrupt supporters both in and out of Congress!
If the schools are not able to teach the truth about a dark part of history, then, it is up to parents and community leaders to teach the truth. This is necessary to help our society move forward. The Government that tries to dismiss the truth is doomed to fail. Our history will determine our future and must be told in a truthful fashion, no matter how painful it is.
The global economy says that these kids won't be able to get into Harvard, UCLA, etc or compete for top positions if they simply aren't taught about the world. 😢
What we do is stop treating bigotry like it's another point of view. Stop pretending that a political party is not a criminal organization. It must be obliterated!
Exactly. Early in the Trump administration, I saw someone beautifully describe why they cut vehement Trump supporting family members out of their lives. They explained that political differences are tolerable, but anti-racism is about core values that should be universal, not dependent on one’s political party. If someone takes criticism of racism personally or as a slight against their party, they have much bigger problems than whether someone invites them to Thanksgiving dinner.
I'm from North Little Rock, Arkansas, and this happened when I was four years old. I never learned about it until I was an older adult. I was in seventh grade when the first Black students came to school with us. I remember thinking, contrary to what I had been hearing, they're just like me. This was in the 1960s. I think African American Studies should be taught to ALL students and a requirement for high school graduation (including credit for the class). I moved away from Arkansas in 1975. It still makes me sad and angry to see the racism that still exists as I have family and friends there.
The Mayor of Little Rock called President Eisenhower and asked for help. He NATIONALIZED the Arkansas National Guard, that took them out of the Governors control and sent in the USAF to deal with it. If was one of the few times the US Armed Forces could be used as Armed Forces within our borders, the Governor of Arkansas had violatied a decision by the United States Supreme Court. There was more than this involved with it, look it up.
It was the US Army 101st Airborne, not the USAF, but yes, it was a momentous time in our history that MUST be part of the national curriculum, as well as the state curriculum in the very state where it happened, NOT swept under the rug. If someone is made uncomfortable by the discussion of past or present systemic racism, they NEED to be uncomfortable until something sinks in.
I live in Arkansas, Little Rock specifically and encounter some of the Central High teachers and they aren't going for it. Sanders isn't doing this for anything but publicity. LR and Northwest Arkansas are liberal areas but outside of that its REd
And that’s the very thing these fascists seek to prevent in this generation. For them, halting progress isn’t enough. Their agenda requires going backward. Deep down, they know how outnumbered & outwitted they are. Awakenings like yours are their greatest fear!
Total respect and admiration for Dr. Terrence Roberts and the rest of The Little Rock Nine. Theirs are the stories kids need to hear early in life.

@jo-annerichardson34, they're too busy claiming that it hurts white children's feelings.
Terrific interview! Thank you.

It is so disheartening...

Keep asking myself how stupid can we get, and then there is a new...... didn't know we had to do it again. We are all Americans !!!
Thanks for this great interview with those awesome people!

Wow I did not know that they closed all high schools and in some places all schools. That explains tons about education in Arkansas.
Thank you!

I think people just don't care if it doesn't affect them.

I'm wondering if the right wing is going to try to recall Brown, and bring back legally segregated schools?
Why are the DeSantis types not prosecuted for incitement?
Public schools are starting to act like colleges. Kids wanting credits for extra curriculum outside the school schedule. Smh
Just so you know high school students have been taking AP classes for decades and getting college credit.
