  • Huge Variety East Lancashire Railway Explore. Watch Simon and Nodrog meet up with Jonny from ELR Bury Hydraulic Group for an amazing explore around the railway site.
Originally The East Lancashire Railway operated from 1844 to 1859 in the historic county of Lancashire.
Railway from Clifton via Bury to Rawtenstall, and during its short life grew into a complex network of lines connecting towns and cities including Liverpool, Manchester, Preston and Blackburn.
It became part of the Lancashire - Yorkshire Railway in 1859
Passenger services between Bury and Rawtenstall were withdrawn by British Rail on 3 June 1972. Coal services to Rawtenstall ended in 1980 and formal closure of the line followed in 1982.
A group of like minded folk got together and formed the East Lancashire Railway Trust reopening the line on 25 July 1987
Parts of the original network remain in use today, and this 12 mile 7 station section of the original line between Bury and Rawtenstall is now operated as a heritage the railway.
The railway is open every weekend of the year, holding a number of extra themed events and galas throughout the year, which include steam and diesel locomotives, and also offers driver experience courses and holds around 140 carriages, wagons and utility vehicles.

A BIG thank you goes firstly to The East Lancs Railway for allowing Gordon and Blackpool Simon, to vlog about behind the scenes, and what East Lancs have. Secondly goes to Gordon and Simon for vlogging all around the site. They have done a fantastic job on this. A lot of hard work has gone into this, and time-consuming. It just goes to show what East lancs have got, they do a great job throughout the hole year, with summer gala's and Santa special's. It's all about showing there appreciation, and how much the public turn out for all they do. Well worth a visit.....Thank you all

Love it when Blackpool Simon points at the 50 and says that’s a proper loco. That 37 in metals Railfreight grey was stunning.

When DMU were first introduced (Met-Cam yellow diamond twins) BR ran a half hour service from Bacup to Bury on Saturdays, such was the demand. I remember going on holiday from Cloughfold, change at Bury onto the ex-L&Y emu to Victoria, walk through on the long platform with a ticket barrier in the middle into Exchange, train to Chester, train to Ruabon, then on the Cambrian to Barmouth and Llandanwg. That's three current heritage lines in one journey.

Wow, thanks guys. I thought all diesel locos were diesel-electric. I had no idea the early ones used transmissions for traction.

I drove the hymek a few years ago on driver experience day at the ELR it was well worth the money and looking forward to doing it again with a different diesel locomotive

I keep saying I’ll visit one day but still not done it, I was lucky enough to secondman probably one of the last coal trips to Rawtenstall in 1980 before it closed. The driving cab environment has certainly changed from the early diesels no wonder drivers were deaf.

I cant belive it.... u missed possibly the most important loco of the lot.... the class 504. Its right at the bottom of the coach sidings outside Buckley Wells coach shed. The 504 used to run the Manchester to bury and beyond on the 3rd rail. Custom built for the line and the only one left. Still..... u got a look at valiant.. driving that again in june on an experiance day. Mint place the ELR is 😎

Used to drive the pacers on the mainline. Looking back they were good to drive. Quite reliable and when they did go wrong you could simply trip out the MCBs and you were back in business!

Funny how this crowd get constantly condemned on Twitter, as I warned you about Gordon. It is disappointing that by association you are giving support to their misogynistic attitude to their female volunteers. This really isn’t acceptable unless you agree with what they did, in which case you’ll lose a lot of supporters.

I’m there showcasing the hard work of the Bury Hydraulic Group. I had no idea of what has occurred and my visit has no connection to a 3rd party event / issue. It’s quite unreasonable to assume such buddy.
