Dad was based Newton heath early 1950s till retiring late 2010. As a young boy he regularly took me to the wooden hut to collect his pay, followed by a 'go on the whistle' and walk by the massive engines. 65+ years ago
Absolutely fantastic footage and brings back many memories, back in my day 1950s most of the expresses going east up the 1-47 Miles Platting bank would be double headed, especially the Liverpool Newcastle express and Jubilees to boot, I see some folks on here are having a whinge about clarity of the film, they must remember this was taken some 55/56 years ago and for that era the clarity is really good, oh and thank you Alan for this glorious insight into the Manchester steam scene.
I was a regular train spotter on Victoria and Exchange station’s when I was around 12 years old,I secretly used to visit Patricroft railway sheds on a Sunday night and have been in that cabin seen in this video. My dad worked for the Railway and would have gone mad if he had ever found out I’d been there as he might have got sacked,I have actually driven a steam locomotive at Llangollen which my children paid for on my 70th birthday, what a great day out that was, last Christmas my daughter paid for me to go on the Flying Scotsman from Bury to Rottenstall and back another great day out,as you can see I have never lost my love of steam engines.
Good one mate, I too did a lot of my trainspotting at Victoria but back in the middle to late 1950s, some great memories, used to watch the double headed (usually 2 jubs) heading the Liverpool Newcastle express, always a great sight to see and going upto Newton Heath sheds and spotting many `Clans` and engines from north of the border, even spotting 45673 Keppel from 63A Perth, yeh good memories.
Absolutely fantastic 🤩 I’m sat in Trafford Pk now watching this in my lorry lol 😆 how things have changed 😣 I was born in Urmston in 1957 and missed most of steam but Trafford park was my weekend playground 😀
Yeh used to go here quite a lot back in the 1950s the shed code back then was 9E, used to get some interesting engines from Kentish Town 14B and Nottingham 16A.
A few years ago there were two lengthy episodes on TH-cam focusing on Newton Heath shed and the men who worked there .. I think they were called "Railwaymen" I can't find them any more - does anyone know how to access/buy them?
Probably because these old films were shot with cameras of a different aspect ratio to that of the modern (widescreen) computer screens. These films would look ok on an old vacuum tube television. See if you can change your aspect ratio (4:3) in your monitor settings.

Such a sad loss the old Manchester Victoria. Horrible windy cellar now😢
Very good!

Excellent film, catches the way things used to be very well

I used to go to Trafford Park railway sheds on my bike during the fifty’s,occasionally I’d seen an Eastern Region Loco there.
Fantastic stuff, particularly liked the pre ELR Bury scenes, and also the Dambusters-esque trailing music!
From 1967 I remember steam in north Wales. Llandudno Junction and the run into Manchester was a real haven for steam.
Yes Love this especially since I come from north Manchester. I was 20 in 1968 just wish I had took more notice of what was happening.
Excellent filming, editing and commentary - great memories!
Thanks so much for posting this film, and I would love to see the others in the series, but can't find them on TH-cam.
Cheers Tim
My late Dad was a fireman on that very line just thought I would let you know 😕😕👍👍
Just added an extension called Ultrawidify which cured the stretched aspect ratio - tapped 4:3 and it now plays correctly 👍
Very good but a great shame that the screen is stretched, giving oval wheels and smokebox doors.
Metrolink line now a really boring slow journey

superb , thank , does any film exist of the manchester to southport line , i wonder
Lol .... I thought they got rid of the broad gauge in the 19th C ?!
Brilliant, Alan. Any chance of re-loading it in 4:3 ?
Hopefully I can get it done by the end of October
A great pity that all thus stuff is presented in the wrong aspect ratio. Why do this?
Plays correct aspect ratio for me. Suggest you check the settings on whatever device you are using.
Same for me. Shame.

Would be a great video, but aspect ratio is wrong. Happens a lot on TH-cam. Thanks anyway!
Yes, I spotted that and tried to alter it but no joy! Great film record nonetheless.
@@tankmicr00man The Broad Gauge returns!
Soundtrack seems very low
Why is the aspect ratio wrong? Is it my iPad?
This is film shot in 4x3 but shown in 16x9.
Oval wheels, wide track and stretched everything.
