That “depression” needed to go into reverse or 7th is a real thing. I’ve seen a couple of Doug’s videos where the knob was depressed to activate the highest gear. In particular, the R34 has this feature for 5th or 6th (I forget what the top gear is on that car).
My wife surprised me with this for Xmas. Did have to spring for the overpriced USB dongle, but I'm extremely pleased with the shifter. Instantly switching from H-Pattern to SEQ is its best feature. Not yo mention it's built like a tank! Got it just in time to really enjoy the RSS GT pack. Loving it with BTCC pack for AC too. And it's a must for Dirt Rally and PC2 rally cars. Got SimVibe setup on seat with nice "clunk" for each shift....life is good!
If you want a bit more realism, attach a transducer to the side of the gear shift and run SimVibe, then you can feel the engine vibs as you rev the engine. Although to be honest, having a transducer mounted to your seat and pedals makes a bigger difference by letting you feel the road. SimVibe lets you map an engine rpm range to a vibration frequency range and it also has a shift effect that gives you a bump when when you put it in each gear. There's lots of different information to play with and different effects. I also like the rpm vibration in the pedals and seat.
So glad I watched this. I already own it (bought using your affiliate link ;) but couldn't figure out how to mount it using the side channels. Figured it out after watching your video. Thanks
I have and love this shifter, I on the other hand would love a longer shaft! Ehmm, You know, for a longer throw, It helps to always run with the bigger knob!!! and the fact that you just ned to push a small lever to go from H pattern to seq. is epic, I change mode often i pc2. I'm also running a complete Fanatec setup, so i'm happy that i dont need to pay extra for a dongle! I'm using the table clamp and it holds the shifter just fine, it have never moved a millimeter and im not holding back!
I hope we see a full FFB H pattern shifter soon. Something that vibrates which takes some muscle to get into gear. Like vibrate your arm off when you grind a gear.
That would be really nice , closest thing to it is probably that logitech FFB joystick I think someone made software for it so you could use it as a gear stick but I don't know what happend to that.
As with other Fanatec gear, it's a step above the Thrustmaster level gear, but below the custom stuff while remaining at a price you can afford without selling a kidney or child. I'm really happy with mine, and while it's not a must have, it's defo a nice to have and really well constructed.
The fact that you have to press down to go to the last row of the shifter, which includes seventh gear and reverse gear, has sold me on this shifter. It is a FEATURE, not a bug. Yes, H shifter should be only 6 speed by default, because when you are driving a real car, with all the movement and vibration, you can only move your hand in a NE direction to shift. And I drive an H shifter in real life, so that's what I am used to doing.
to be fair, the shifter shaft in my miata has more play than the cs shifter. ive thought about this and the only way to get the true feel of a real shifter is to plop a real gearbox next to your seat, wire sensors to detect each gear position, and attach a motor to the input or output shaft so it turns while you play. the shift wont feel right if all the gears are stationary, you wont get that pause while the blocking ring/syncro mesh stuff is taking place. the syncro is where the real feel of a shift comes from.
GamerMuscleVideos The coarse feeling when shifting is due to the fact that too little lithium bearing grease has been used during assembly. The lithium bearing grease that looks like soft toffee, you know... that brown yellow stuff. Undo 4 bolts on the top, carefully lift the top by the shaft (a wire is connected from the switch in the bottom), remove the small wire carefully. Now dip the nylon bottom end of the gear lever in a jar of grease or just royally coat it. Stick it back into the housing and whilst holding down make a few test shifts. Additionally you can also put an extra coat below in the gate. I know, it should have been done better in the factory. Still, send it in for warranty maintenance or just do it yourself with maybe written consent of Fanatec if they are willing.
GamerMuscleVideos No worries. I had mine upgraded from a V1 to a V1.5 (from potmeters to HAL sensors) and I felt what you described, so I just had to go and tell you the quick fix. Mine is smooth as butter ever since, and that after much more fierce abuse than what you have showed on cam so far. Haha The little rotational play in the lever is something you can't remove though, as this is just due to its design. Cars in real life also come with that kind of movement though, maybe not all and maybe not that much. But like you said, it's something you only notice when you are concentrating on the stick and not actually driving anything. The adapter... well, Fanatec is a modular company. Even desk clamps don't come with a wheel, stick or handbrake. It makes the devices not unnecessarily expensive, but at least in terms of clamps you do get a serious hunk of metal.
Hi @GamerMuscleVideos what is the Assetto Car/Mod that you are driving with the '90s F1 cars? I have a couple of the one-off free cars (MRK McLaren, a Jordan, a Ferrari) but whatever you're driving there looks a little more sorted.
I got a TH8A out of easy set up with my other Thrustmaster parts. But after breaking the sequential mode by botching a mod I'm switching to this and enjoying not halting my existence to unscrew, twist (the right direction, hopefully) and screw again just to switch between modes.
I just bought one, it is indeed a beast of a shifter, I really like its H pattern with some hardness (coming from a shortened-and-hardened th8a). But I'm having trouble with the 2nd gear : if I pull it a bit to the left while 2nd is engaged, it switches to Neutral then 2nd instantly. I guess it's a little malfunction of mine, I hope it is... Just contacted Fanatec because it's brand-new, wait and see :)

I have this shifter, problem is that my Xbox and my Laptop (that I use to update Fanatec items only) do Not recognize it, what could I do to fix this? ☹️ Also I have there E-Brake you reviewed before that also is Not recognized by either device. Last problem is that I really Only can use the Fanatec ClubSport Wheel (the better belt drive version from a few years ago) and Triple Pedal assembly on "Dirt Rally" and that slow truck game called "Mud Runner", and NO other Xbox One games... Any thoughts why I can't use these on all the games everyone else has??? The forums are nearly impossible to navigate and find answers, and tech support isn't good. I could really use somebodies help with this, or let me know whom I should talk to. 🙏🏼 Thank you everyone

Nor sure how real cars shift with 6 speeds but on the Fanatec you push left for 1/2 and right for 5/6. For 3 and 4 you just push up or down because without left or right pressure, the spring will center it to the 3/4 position. With a 7th gear without lockout, right pressure would take you to 5th or 7th.
Great video besides the fact you talk about realistic and set your wheel to kitten baby FFB levels whereas you can turn it will a tiny mouse's scrotum. Try a real racing car and your FFB setting for the wheel would be around 1/20th of reality. It's a game so...it should be around 1/7 at least setting. For a guy named GamerMuscle...hmm. You will need many spots at the sim racing gym. Also, you said KNOB a ton, so you get HUGE points for that. You should have quoted the retail price without a link. All in all....very good review. I'm guessing it's not worth the extra time (not money) to upgrade from the TH8A. I'm guessing your say, "If you are thinking about buying a shifter and want the slightly better one for some extra cash, then the Fanatec is worth it.". Selling a TH8A for this isn't. Either that or go for a custom/sell the family shifter. (at that point a real car should be in your sim room) $199 US is worth it compared with the discounted now TH8A. I thought because it was Fanatec, it would be $300 plus.
I owned the TH8A and now the Fanatec shifter and I can say it is definitely an upgrade, that is well worth the extra $100 price when you factor in the USB dongle and Clubsport table clamp. The Fanatec shifter is more robust, it offers better feedback when you shift, either in H or sequential. Its dropdead easy to switch back and forth and you get both the H and sequential knobs.
Lawyer4Ever I agree. The easy sequential adaptation is great (I don't see that as skilled driving but, it's there) It's less than $100 more if you have a Fanatec Wheel. With s thrustmaster, yes you have to buy a USB dongle, like I had to do for my other custom pedals. It's an idea. Sell my TH8A or just keep it for my other SIM or bring in my custom shifter with a real car ripped out conglomeration. It also mounts better than the Thrustmaster. 7th gear is rate territory. ;)
I have also owned both those shifters. The Thrustmaster TH8A is nice compared to some plastic toy from Logitech, but its throw is very long, and the shift gate is too wide IMHO. It never felt natural to me, so I'd overcompensate to find 5th gear and could end up in 7th gear (i.e. neutral). That got old quick. This will not happen with the Fanatec because the shifter gate is narrower and feels more natural. I suspect the TH8A feels a bit "off" because of the weird combination of short stick, long throw and wide shift gate. Its mechanic is akin to sticking a pen in a tennis ball and rolling it on the table... rather than similar to a real shifter that doesn't "roll" but goes more fore and aft as it moves levers on the gearbox!
haraldpost I agree. It's also what you get in both these shifters. When you go for sequential and H-Pattern to accommodate most, you get these. Actual gears or an actual physical connection is only on $500 and way plus custom shifters. The TH8A isn't bad but, is very easy to pop into gear, even on the most tightened screw setting. It reminds me of a bad 1970s Ferrari H-Pattern with metal infringements. 1979s Ferraris are great to drive. I said a bad one. Wish there was a mod for these shifters. I need a gas pedal mod for my Thrusnaster pro pedals. I have one but, need a the metal holder. I wonder if they sell those individually? My Clubsports are fine as is with some custom reality enhancements.
Nice review, but i'm missing this inside porn-view of the Sim Racing Garage. Dissamble everything, weighting and measuring it, you know😁 Actually i got enough porn-view of this thing, because the sequential spring was broken after some hours Dirt Rally and half of the weight is probably the grease inside. It even drops out of the bottom plate after a while. I don't know how many engines i blew up from wrong down-shifting, but it just took two years to get used to the gearing. And the real Schwarzenegger-h-shifter will come from Heusinkveld this year and likely no possibility to soften it. I only tested a pre-build without driving and shifting through the gears is work and feels amazingly like the real thing. Nils told me you need one kilogram more force shifting into a wrong gear. Problem was, you needed already some muscles getting into the right gear😋 No matter how long it takes to get used to, i have to buy this thing😘
I dont know much about tech... but how tf can someone recommend this over the Thrustmaster TH8A? The TH8A is built out of solid metal and actually has metal slots to guide your shifter to the next gear.. explanation? lol
Th8a does not quickly go from sq to h , and th8a is nowhere near as study in shift action. Th8a used to cost £80 which was fantastic but now it's 120+ sometimes way more... I'm actually a fan of the th8a I like how it feels but thrust master have been taking the piss with its current price.

My shifter is being RMA'd as we speak. Lasted 3 weeks and then then third gear wouldn't register. Unit looked heavy duty and with good quality but looks are deceiving, the unit didn't outlast a $20.00 shifter before it required fixing.

Don't think so, in this case the adaptor I think has the actual gubbins to work out what the shifter is doing , the shifter itself I think might be a "dumb" device. This in some ways makes the USB dongle more of a controller than the shifter ;)
too many innuendos lmao. Feel like if I wanted to upgrade my logitech shifter I'd go for the shh shifter. This might be better, but it's like 2.5 times the price.
I licence my music from www.epidemicsound.com/ so they probably do as well, I have heard epidemic sound music in adverts and a bunch of things in the past.
Fanatec, quite frankly, are poo bums. They will not ship to New Zealand even from their Australian store. Their products might be good but they are poor at customer service.
I talked to them about shipping internationally last month they said it's one of the things they are working on. I'm sure they want to sell to as many places as possable.

I measured the throw of the Fanatec shifter and the shifter in my Miata and from the shifter turret of the Miata, they're almost identical in throw.

I would love a big elongated shaft to push and pull but unfortunately my shaft is rather small.
I've been using this shifter for 3 years now. Still works quite good.

G25 shifter for the win. A good hard knob twist changes from H to sequential, has a stubby but functional shaft which fits nicely in the hand.

If you have a Fanatec wheel base you have to change over the phone cable in an awkward position to change from H to sequential!
Is that with the club sport wheel base ? or just the older wheel bases like the porche ?

You can set it as low as you want say same as a g25 but still get 20x the information and a totally smooth feel.

I cannot image better solution for 7th. gear shifting. You simply do not want accidentally shift (for most cases) unexisting gear.
Never had an issue accidentally shifting into 5th or 6th with cars that have 4 gears , once I know the car only has 4 gears.

With s thrustmaster, yes you have to buy a USB dongle, like I had to do for my other custom pedals. It's an idea. Sell my TH8A or just keep it for my other SIM or bring in my custom shifter with a real car ripped out conglomeration. It also mounts better than the Thrustmaster. 7th gear is rate territory. ;)
I have also owned both those shifters. The Thrustmaster TH8A is nice compared to some plastic toy from Logitech, but its throw is very long, and the shift gate is too wide IMHO. It never felt natural to me, so I'd overcompensate to find 5th gear and could end up in 7th gear (i.e. neutral). That got old quick. This will not happen with the Fanatec because the shifter gate is narrower and feels more natural.
I suspect the TH8A feels a bit "off" because of the weird combination of short stick, long throw and wide shift gate. Its mechanic is akin to sticking a pen in a tennis ball and rolling it on the table... rather than similar to a real shifter that doesn't "roll" but goes more fore and aft as it moves levers on the gearbox!
haraldpost I agree. It's also what you get in both these shifters. When you go for sequential and H-Pattern to accommodate most, you get these. Actual gears or an actual physical connection is only on $500 and way plus custom shifters. The TH8A isn't bad but, is very easy to pop into gear, even on the most tightened screw setting. It reminds me of a bad 1970s Ferrari H-Pattern with metal infringements. 1979s Ferraris are great to drive. I said a bad one. Wish there was a mod for these shifters. I need a gas pedal mod for my Thrusnaster pro pedals. I have one but, need a the metal holder. I wonder if they sell those individually? My Clubsports are fine as is with some custom reality enhancements.

Nice review, but i'm missing this inside porn-view of the Sim Racing Garage. Dissamble everything, weighting and measuring it, you know😁 Actually i got enough porn-view of this thing, because the sequential spring was broken after some hours Dirt Rally and half of the weight is probably the grease inside. It even drops out of the bottom plate after a while. I don't know how many engines i blew up from wrong down-shifting, but it just took two years to get used to the gearing.
And the real Schwarzenegger-h-shifter will come from Heusinkveld this year and likely no possibility to soften it. I only tested a pre-build without driving and shifting through the gears is work and feels amazingly like the real thing. Nils told me you need one kilogram more force shifting into a wrong gear. Problem was, you needed already some muscles getting into the right gear😋 No matter how long it takes to get used to, i have to buy this thing😘

Expensive knobs always lack a dongle , I always prefer Knobs with a dongle maybe things will change in the future.

I dont know much about tech... but how tf can someone recommend this over the Thrustmaster TH8A? The TH8A is built out of solid metal and actually has metal slots to guide your shifter to the next gear.. explanation? lol
Th8a does not quickly go from sq to h , and th8a is nowhere near as study in shift action. Th8a used to cost £80 which was fantastic but now it's 120+ sometimes way more...
I'm actually a fan of the th8a I like how it feels but thrust master have been taking the piss with its current price.

My shifter is being RMA'd as we speak. Lasted 3 weeks and then then third gear wouldn't register. Unit looked heavy duty and with good quality but looks are deceiving, the unit didn't outlast a $20.00 shifter before it required fixing.
I have been using the one in the video for the last two months not had an issue yet, will see what happens over a longer time period.
I have zero luck when it comes to these things. if 1 out of 1000 are defective. I'll get that 1. lol. Its almost comical. Thanks for replying. Great channel btw.

Don't think so, in this case the adaptor I think has the actual gubbins to work out what the shifter is doing , the shifter itself I think might be a "dumb" device. This in some ways makes the USB dongle more of a controller than the shifter ;)

Fanatec, quite frankly, are poo bums. They will not ship to New Zealand even from their Australian store. Their products might be good but they are poor at customer service.
I talked to them about shipping internationally last month they said it's one of the things they are working on. I'm sure they want to sell to as many places as possable.
