Classic sketch from the UK comedy show starring Mel Smith and Griff Rhys Jones. Begins with a head to head discussion of the Beatles and the 60's followed by a rare sketch about the Beatles.
Mel and Griff were brilliant along with Pam and of cause Rowan Atkinson. I was a Malaysian Chinese studying in London during the late 70s and never miss a show of "Not the 9'Oclock News". They sure don't make comedies like they use to. Brought back fond memories. Thanks for making my day. Hope you can post more Mel & Griff. Cheers mate!
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 i only came in here again tonight, as someone had given my comment a thumbs up......ended up watching this whole video again! 😅😅😅 Nearly spat my tea out at that pregnant pause at 2.02!! Sooooo funny! Spent my childhood watching these two guys 💜💜 RIP Mel....you are really missed xx
Went to my local park in S E London/Kent around 7 years ago and spoke to a Woman. As an afterthought, as I was leaving,I asked her what she did and she replied that she was a singer. She said her Dad was in a Band. I asked who and it was Jimi !
THANK YOU - I remember the song from this episode so well even though I only saw it once. The only line from it I could remember was the classic "Damsons Ripen Under Gooseberry Skies". So glad that I have finally managed to find this clip!
I'm a huge Beatles Fan. This stuff is brilliant. I can take a joke like anyone else. Says you? Who's says there joking. RIP Mel Smith and George Martin. You will be both be badly missed. I hope you were welcomed at the Gates by St Peter. God Bless.
went to see these two in the 1980s in stockport (Davenport Theatre) fantastic loved the head to heads These two could have gone on to even greater things Never be forgotten ! RIP
Oh... What a trip down memory lane... I used to love all their stuff from "Not the Nine O'Clock News" to "Alas! Smith and Jones". The Beatles clip was hilarious - They captured the sound and style well.
60, is no age to go! Me personally I like to see everybody die of older age, so sad to hear Mel Smith is no longer with us. May you find peace in Heaven Mate.
It's actually "naughty knickers week in the *soaraway sun".* _'The soaraway Sun'_ was a 1970's ad schtick used by the tabloid after their sales soared in comparison to _'The Mirror" when they started to include cheesy content and topless Page 3 models. Ads appeared on TV such as: _*__'Don't miss week 2 of Naughty Nina reveals all in the soaraway Sun"._* Which was basically Nina Carter talking trash about her sex life in serialised form.
Thank you so much for putting this on. It was from 1987, and was a welcome antidote to the eulogies celebrating the 20th anniversary of Sergeant Pepper. The Pepper spoof left me in agony, as I laughed so hard at the DRUGS song. Kudos too to the great Fluff Freeman for playing his part in this lampoon.
JenTurtle91 that was the production companies reaction to all of the comments on TH-cam shouting for a release of a DVD from Smith and Jones. About time too.
Does anyone remember the sketch about a fighting holiday. Can't find it anywhere. I think they are one of the great underrated double acts. The head to heads were very well crafted. How we could do with that now !
Anyone remember the smith and jones sketches where they would watch old Roman/ Egyptian films and griff would spot a mel lookalike and then take the piss. Can't seem to find them on here. They were hilarious.
I search for a Smith & Jones sketch within they sit in front of the camera (thea are watching the TV set) and ate everithing there (first the popcorn and then flowers, tie ect.) because it is preoccupy them in 100%. After all (when the show is off in the tv-set) they back out and say: "It vas very boring". Would you send me this clip? Gza
It`s interesting that you talk about Derek and Clive, I`ve been looking for the track on Ad- neauseum where they swear and Dud gets carried away and says radiator. I do not want to say all the things that I have just...............said.
Wonderful!
Eight minutes twenty seconds of sheer brilliance!
"I was one of the beautiful people" the look on Griffs face, brilliant :-)
..was gonna say the exact same thing! classic..
You are still very much missed Mel.

Just came across this clip after many years, hoping the last 13 years have been wonderful for you.
The long pause in the dialogue after Mel's statement at 1:57 is brilliant. Griff's reaction is just priceless.
I love the Beatles' song parodies. They sound great!
Absolutely classic and I love the Neil Innes pisstakes afterwards!
"You've been ugly as sin as long as I've known you." hahahaha Classic. RIP Mr Smith
NTNON brightened my teenage years. Very sad news. RIP Mel.
RIP Mel Smith, such a great comedian :-D, sadly missed :-(

Thanks for adding this. The laughter goes on guys..!
Is it still continuing 9 years later, Sarah? I, have, often, wondered...

Somebody commented upon hearing of Mel's death that with his lifestyle he was lucky to reach 60.
That is an excellent Lennon impression.

@Ron Mac95 it is not as much that he wrote, he should have writted them....but, history on that has already been written, writteously 😉 .

R.I.P Mel Smith, A sad day
They have actually released a dvd called "At Last Smith & Jones" which features a lot of the best bits from their sketch show.

Yup. The Rutles.
swinging london.
where was that.

I really agree with you. The show "Alas Smith & Jones" was one of my favourites in the late 80`s...or was it in the early
90`s?
Late 80s
For the longest time I remembered that bit with the record playing backwards saying "Paul McCartney's as dead as a doornail."
Oh Mel Smith how I miss you!
Deck chair attendant! :D
My best guess is mid-to-late '80's. Bloody wonderful time for British comedy!
Your best guess at what?
It's like Cook and Dudley brilliant
Anyone remember the smith and jones sketches where they would watch old Roman/ Egyptian films and griff would spot a mel lookalike and then take the piss. Can't seem to find them on here. They were hilarious.
Chris knows they are on TH-cam. I can't find the link right now, but if you type in Smith and Jones ITV you might be lucky.
