I was lucky enough to meet Albert Collins in Adelaide Australia in the mid ‘80’s. My mate and me were young, broke Uni students, who couldn’t afford to get into the show, so we were hanging outside the stage door listening when one of the road crew spotted us and let us in. We watched from the side of the stage as Mr. Collins blew the roof off the Thebarton theatre! After an amazing gig, we hung out with the band and Albert at their hotel. We listened to Albert tell stories of his life until nearly dawn. I’ve never forgotten his incredible playing and his warmth as a person.

I met Mr Collins in Albuquerque, NM at the 76 truck stop, I was admiring an old custom bus at the pumps. It seemed to have a new Detroit diesel is what caught my eye
Who walked out? Albert Collins, amazing, we stood there n talked over an hour, he stated he had just come off tour with Sting and was on his way to Texas to play some gig
He offered me a new CD but he had left the box at home
I called his record label some time later and explained the story about the cd, they explained he had passed, a very sad day, he seemed to be just a simple person doing what he loved, he gave me, joe blow an hour or more of his time standing there at the pumps of the 76 truck stop, thnks Mr Collins, RIP

@@bruth3659 Jimmie....But, it's just my taste. To me Stevie sounds exactly like Albert King and Hendrix mixed together...A great mixture by the way-2 of my favorites growing up as a kid in the the 60's and 70's... Stevie does those two better than anyone probably. Now, Albert Collins is totally unique and Jimmie is mature enough to realize he wanted to find his own sound and approach too. If you watch the show again, notice how Albert and Jimmie's tone are both better first of all & although not his fault; Stevie's Strat. tone is harsh and thin by comparison . Then notice how Albert and Jimmie take their time more and wait for things to build....I like that a lot and it makes me shout "Yeah"! Stevie has never done that to me...more like; "Wow, intense".... but I've heard it all before. Too bad he didn't live longer tho, I think his last recordings showed he was getting more original all the time, and finding his own thing. Tunes like Scuttle Buttin' showed he had amazing speed etc. and I loved that, but there's other things that my ear goes to for blues; an original tone, pacing and phrasing...Anyway, Stevie was a great link between Rock and Blues, forcing Rock fans to come over to the blues via the Hendixy stuff...he dragged tons of 'em over (at the perfect time-when disco and punk/new Wave were wearing thin) that may never have appreciated Albert King or Albert Collins otherwise. Personally I was buying and listening to Albert's King and Collins in the 1970's...so? Some folks like Freddie King better than Albert or B.B.....not me, Freddie doesn't move me...it's all just personal taste when it comes down to it.

@@MrStanleyMilton good reply BTW. I was curious to see if Jimmie is who you meant. Stevie said Jimmie is the best rhythm guitarist around.
As far a s lead goes to me his licks don't seem as smooth. Like he is forcing it. Funny how opinions are I could rate these guys in different orders for different reasons. Examp, respect for pioneers etc.
Speaking of (crescendo) One of my favs is JP's Since Iv Been Loving You. The solo builds to break then drops like a broken heart. SRV Live at the Elmo combo Texas Flood had great intensity. I hear ya, most important. I love to watch the physical side as they play as well. I have seen SRVs eyes roll back in his head while playing...lol. Entering another realm. I have experienced the feel playing myself, altho, I am not much good at guitar. Playing and listening can be euphoric. I think that our personal feelings tune into this. Music is such a deep form of communication.
I never used to like Johnny Winter, then I really listened... Never heard anyone play so fast with so much feel, and so tech.
      Am I writing a book? sheesh, :)

Albert's guitar tone carries a "BITE!" Sure, Fender Telecasters generally have a brighter tone than do Stratocasters. It's not the guitar. It's not the amp. It's not the mix. It's the hands. It's the attack. It's the phrasing. It's the balls. Albert is the real deal.

Girl I was dating at the time somehow got tickets. Amazing show. The event was assembled by Lee Atwater, who loved guitar and Memphis-styled BBQ. Atwater was a decent guitar player, would even sit in with the likes of BB King when touring in DC. Collins did a great call-and-answer break at one point. Atwater jammed, as well, playing on his back at one point. By the end everyone was dancing, and I mean everyone. I found myself dancing with Jeb Bush's wife whom I had no idea who she was at the time. It wasn't too crowded, either. You could easily make your way to the front and be standing a few feet from the stage. Just before their set, the Vaughan brothers were strolling up to the stage (no escorts or security) with Stevie Ray's "SRV" guitar slung over his shoulder. My date was smart enough to bring a camera. I took a pic of her with Stevie Ray and Jimmy's arms around her. Vaughan brothers were completely unpretentious. Only wish I had asked someone else to take a pic of the four of us. It was pretty special to see so many all-time great blues musicians not 10 feet away from you.

He plays like a collection of old records, maybe like the ones he and Stevie learned from. Even AC and bro SRV seemed to be looking on with genuine approval as Jimmy got through his bars and maybe then some without even flinching! Lol Really love listening to Jimmy’s gutsy playing, ya great recording.

Nobody gives any love to Jimmie, it gets irritating. Jimmie is the best.

When u see him beside stevie tho, stevie just out does him so much. More intensity, more flow with the solos. Stevie was miles ahead of Jimmy to be fair.

Bruh, thats probably the best solo I've ever seen him take but I'm embarrassed for him for even taking a solo besides these 2. They got guys living down the street from you that are better than Jimmy. No disrespect from me but when I see statements like this I just have to respond. You don't know what you don't know and you can't hear what you can't hear. Sorry if this ruffles your feathers but thats like trying to compare Mike Tyson and someone from WWE They are not in the same league.

@@andysmith6156 yup I get it. Jimmy gets thrown on stage with guitar virtuosos all the time, like at Crossroads, cuz he’s accepted by them for his musical pedigree, and he’s a cool and very nice dude in person. But Jimmy knows he’s not a virtuoso, he plays like himself, or more like the old records. I’ve heard him talk about waiting his turn, thinking what he was gonna play. When Jimmy had to follow Clapton, or BB King, he just stayed true to his musical roots. So I just wanna say that comparisons of guitar players (best, better than, etc) are not objective, and I dig waiting to hear Jimmy follow these guys, knowing he’s sweating a little, and see what he comes up with.

@@raincitymusic1369 THANKS for the input, and I'm glad you shared that perspective of Jimmy I've never heard. I trtry to keep an open mind and I hate when people start having these pissing contests about artists lol. Even though I've survived as a pro musician for 42 years there are things that I just don't know. iTS better if I stay away from absolutes so I remain teachable. thanks for the input
