How about an acoustics tier list?
Second that.
AD20
THWACK!
Factor ftw. Ziiiiiiiiiing
Opening hole, omega god tier.
giggity
If we’re being entirely honest hete
Opening holes are awful. On knives.
I was watching this with my combat fixed blade in my hand and then got suddenly attacked by a nail nick ninja! I'll update y'all as soon as I get back from the ER!
Did he get both ears or just one?
I disagreed about the hole for years. Thought it was so ugly, touching it felt awful, didn't feel organic.. But then i bought a PM2 of my own and practiced for a day.. Legend indeed.
Tier Lists = NOT Poopy Pablo
I feel attacked
@@poopypablo5314 you just have a name that lends to these types of comments....on a side note...during that livestream...i felt SO bad for you for not being there when your name got called, but also was laughing equally hard at your name. 👊
Never forget. Long live poopy😅
M.C did still give him something tho.... what's that tell you about the man?
Spot on about front flippers IMO. Gimme a regular flipper and/or blade hole, and I'm a happy man.
Button locks and crossbar locks give you the most fidgety deployment option. Release the lock and there's no resistance so you can flick it open. So much fun. This is my favorite deployment option.
The only one I disagree with is front flippers. Granted, there are some really bad front flippers out there. But a really well done one is Huge W status for me.
Yeah I agree
WINTERBLADE MFIRE! you need to try that opening, it’s a side opening auto powered by magnets but can be closed with a flick
reverse flick with hole or smoothed slot is king
GREAT VID..GREAT POINTS. I now only buy folders that have one or more of the following: axis lock, push button, slanted, and or 'over sized' thumbstuds. ...i hate front flippers too. The Ken Onion Buckhorn and limited edition Buck Slim pro have great slanted thumbstuds
I'm just here for the mickey mouse voices
Happy to bring them back for you 👍
Always entertaining, thanks for the video!
And Goofy!
I think you got everything right. Thumbstuds... well it depends on geometry, so there's that variable, I have at least one knife where they're not placed where they should be or they're painful to use, and others that are a dream to use, so no argument from me there. Interesting episode!
All hail Winterblade!! 🙌💜💜💜👐
Opening hole god tier for sure, the biggest reason it’s over thumb studs for me is thumb stud placement can take away from the cutting edge. Thumb hole is high speed low drag all day
I was hoping to see the Lee Williams Kickstop on the list. Yes, it's a flipper tab, but it gets out of the way for use. In fact, maybe affects on the knife's usability would make a good update to this list, or even its own list.
It would be really cool if you could do a version of Excalibur with the Kickstop.
Front flipper, while not my favorite, when done correctly works incredibly well for sleek, small edc designs. The Isham Mckenna is a great example of this. That knife is just fantastic with a front-flipper only deployment and it makes the overall design so sleek, slim, and easy to carry.
THIS IS THE CONTENT WE NEED
I like front flippers a lot though i agree a solo front flipper isn't all that great.
I also like balisongs a lot but I mostly just use trainers so I don't have to worry when I'm learning tricks. I actually got into regular pocket knives because I had been using a balisong and I don't really like the handles when I'm cutting things
IMO, assisted is pretty much obsolete with the emergence of good button locks the last couple years. Good manual flippers are damn near close to as easy to open as any assisted knife and even if it isn’t, you can use it like a gravity knife if that’s legal in your area.
The problem with assisted is the recoil when opening it and the added resistance when closing it. It’s gonna be harder for people with limited hand strength to grip the opening recoil and it’s harder to close. A button lock just drops shut. Someone who needs an assisted knife likely can’t be use a button lock hard enough to exceed the strength of a plunge lock.
Slip joints that you can pinch open are my favorite. Thumb studs are second. Thumb holes are third. Front flippers are last and regular flippers are second last.
I think that you pretty much nailed it, but I would have most likely put the DA OTF in the legend category. I knew the Halo SA OTF would be in the legend category! The Halo 6 is truly bad ass, I have two of them.
Professionals will ALWAYS prefer fixed blade when possible.
As for folders I have found that large Spydy holes get the most consistent results.8 or 9 times out of ten under pressure. Still at least 0.5 slower than a fixed blade.
Professionals in what?
TOP 5. 1. Hole 2. Fuller 3. Back flipper 4. Thumb stud 5. Front flipper. Great video man 👍
The only opening hole I have ever owned that was bad was on the Hogue K320. Small, badly shaped and so overly rounded that it is basically useless. Could basically only slow roll the knife open. Shame because I felt it had one of the best handles I've ever had on a knife.
Was hoping to see crkt provoke since it is kinda its own category
Winterblade Severn absolutely deserves to be up there and it’s LEGENDARY status! I’m glad it exists, it’s for sure a huge win, but without a doubt Bryan Winters is a LEGEND and so is the Severn! Also, it’s the KOTY 2024, in my book!
9:37 okay, fair play. But still doesn’t change the fact that the Severn is bad ass! 😅
Have you checked out the Vosteed Acorn? Great budget knife, would want to hear your opinion on it
I would disagree with thumb studs placement, should be in glad it exists. As I have too many issues using them. If you give a knife with them to a non knife person they struggle with them as well as they hinder the sliceyness of the blade, same could be said about thumb disks.
I would argue the Emerson wave (especially the Spyderco Emerson) should’ve been higher but over I can agree with the list
Another huge win on the video MC!!!
Very good and fun analysis. My one disagreement (and I'm a slip joint lover) would be to drop the convenience on the nail nick to poo poo due to it essentially requiring 2 hands, but incease the satisfaction to huge w - ironically resulting in the same: Fine😊. Thanks MC!🤙
And my favorite is thumb studs. I just bought a knife yesterday specifically for reverse flicking it and I will get back to you. Lol
Did I miss Wave Opener? I love it, instant deploy.
For me my paragon warlock is poopoo town, biggest disappointment out of all the knives I’ve ever bought. I’m still convinced the one I got was a dud.
Great video!! Absolutely agree...anyone who tells you what the "best" knife is should be taken with a grain of salt.
Man I love your videos!! Any knife I look up and see a metal complex review I watch and learn from! I’m currently looking for a large folder that is a front flipper. Preferably also with a hole to index deploy
Kizer Momo is bad to the bone. No thumb hole tho.
Dude you truly get it MC.
I know it is technically a balisong/gravity knife, but I’m still waiting for you to get a Janisong. You do like weird knives…and it’s really weird.🤘🏻
Thumb studs are the Toyota Corolla of knife deployment mechanisms. It's just what you expect to see, it does the job it's meant to do, and that's it. If you want flashy or interesting, get something else.
I'm not a Kershaw fanboy or anything, but I feel like assisted opening went from "loved by all" in 2000 to "turkey bacon" overnight. Did I miss something? Did something happen?
Properly tuned detent systems rendered most assisted opening knives pointless
For some it's a Tier List🚦 and for some it's a Tear List😢. Nothing like a tier list to get some love and hate happening. Where I live anything remotely assisted or automated is a no no - queue the violin. As for the manual deployment methods I'm usually more concerned how the deployment is tuned. For example I quite like back flippers but get one with a bad detent and it sucks. I also quite like thumb studs but get one with poorly placed studs and it sucks. If pushed for a No.1, I'd probably vote for the Spydie hole. Sharp blades all.
Dual action OTF is the one I’d choose if I could only pick one
Skill issue on balisongs
Dang...
Guess we're just poopootown now
9:37 “..this isn’t about locks..” -MC
Thanks ... love that we are seeing you in the corner speak now.
Is Poopy Pablo the Mayor of Poopoo town?
man, move the winter blade to legendary, you said you love the way it feels and there is nothing else like it!! move it to legendary!!
Spydie hole > studs > front flipper > side auto > flipper.
😂
The Factor is very cool. You can easily fail it though
Where would the Winterblade Severn rank on your list?
Really enjoyed this! Best part as always is you arguing with imaginary comments you predict. When you crack yourself up, it cracks me up! Thanks for the laugh 😂😂😂
Deployment method tier list. Very odd. How about rating the best color for cutting effectiveness next.
Just put the fries in the bag
Fixed Blades are ULTRA LEGEND
Cheers!
Well I don’t see the mirage as a magnetically assisted knife, but a hole deployment with a little extra kick. Because if it was assisted I wouldn’t legally be allowed to own one 😅😉
Pretty much agree with ur list
The Buck 110 nail notch (only the Buck 110 version) S tier!
I can't say assisted knifes are reliable. Like I hear about broken springs pretty often
I don't
The best way to deploy your knife is what works for you and what you like
Correct. That's the theme here
Thanks a lot for this tier list. I pretty much agree to your rating. Some of them I cannot experience on my own without risking to lose my job and perhaps even go to jail (probably Notmaßnahme but turning into a felon). So, nice to hear about it at least.
I like the assisted flickers like what kershaw has just easy and quick to open im a kiss guy with everything
I've never been more angry!! Thanks for ruining the weekend MC, you jerk. My list would have been slightly different. Jeez, the nerve... (Thx for a great vid like always 🙂)
Just bought a Scarab 2 Gen 3 with the D/E-S blade in all black. Have you had any experience with the newer scarabs?
Where's Openel?! Front flippers are fun just because they're weird. I only know the basic opening for balisongs and it's still pretty satisfying 😄
Opinel would be represented by the nail nick
@@metal_complex True. But unlike just about every other nail nick out there, the lock is part of the opening process. You could have had more fun with it.
@@EWTHeckmanlocks are separated from deployment in this video. Talked about that 👍
Reverse flip and spine locks (shark, super, secret) for S-Tier or we riot!
As a thumb stud guy I am butthurt it didn’t go instantly to legend😂😂
I didn't know there were that many.
I appreciate not having the gimmicky Provoke in here anywhere.
Was good seeing your actual face! You're much younger than I thought for some reason haha
I just bought a Manix 2 LW and I HATE IT!!!! I am soooooooo mad at myself... Never again will I buy a LW! I guess I should have said up front. Thumb flicking it FOR ME is not as easy as ALL my other spydercos. it's way to light.
I’ve learned to love mine, but I felt like I got ripped off. It feels so cheap
@@earlwoods8253 My son laughed when he picked it up. Said it felt like a toy.
Cant see single action otfs being convenient. The recharge/reload aspect just disrupts the easy use of a knife
Key theme here is "deployment"
@@metal_complex new tier list of retraction? Or de-deployment
Only a small number of Spyderco Sub-hilts were aftermarket modified by Butch to be hidden switch autos.
The vast majority are just normal spyder hole openers.
That said, I think the Vallaton sub-hilt is actually one of the worst examples of a hidden switch auto out there.
Butch didn't make them the nicest action out there unfortunately.
The best examples use the entire scale as a hidden switch.
Matt Diskin probably makes some of the best ever customs.
The best ever production was probbably the stuff from Lone Wolf knives (that got bought and destroyed because of jealousy by benchmade). They had models called the lobo and diablo that had very smooth, whole scale, hidden switches.
Lone Wolf was also the last producer of the infamous Paul lock which I've noticed that none of you newer knife reviewers are familiar with. I see many of you are being impressed by pivot compression based locks coming out of China but the Paul lock predates all of them by decades and is much more mechanically impressive (although much more mechanically complex than a pivot liner or frame lock). It was also very fidgety and satisfying.
Ironically, Lone Wolf is the last and best company to use the Paul lock (also what Benchmade was jealous about and bought and killed them for).
Gerber made the original Paul lock production knives.
It would be hard-ish, but you should try to track down a real Paul lock, ideally from Lone Wolf. You should also try a real, higher quality hidden switch than the Vallaton aftermarket autos.
You should also check out the Spyderco meerkat, its not an opening mechanism but it's one of the coolest locks and it is sort of related to the hidden scale switch auto.
I thought all flippers were good, and then I bought a Gerber.
Front flippers just don't work well for me. Ergonomically bad
Whoah that is not how I thought Metal Complex would look! It feels like someone put a familiar voice to an AI avatar lol
In my headcanon, Jerry from the parts department is a real dude and he owns his sigma reputation. "You might have heard of me, I'm THE Jerry from the parts department."
Chavez 229 kickstop!
Thumb studs versus opening holes...
Depends on sexual preferences.
"Gravity is pretty reliable" -- MC, 2024
Gotta disagree with you, Front Flippers are PooPoo Town all the way. 🤣 The reason that the Emerson Fan Boys (cultists?) will come after you with pitchforks and torches is that, they, like their revered Ernie, are stuck in the past and haven't moved on to more technological means of attack. 🤣🤣
Great video MC!
I have 2 left hands when it comes to front flippers 😄
Pulling the knife out of its sheath.
Fokders*
@@metal_complex
I know, but someone had to say it.
Loved the vid by the way!
Lmao the random viewer voice kills me everytime
Deadlift calluses FTW
Commenting before I watch the video to lock in my hot take…. Flippers are terrible. They limit how you grip the knife, they get in the way, the affect how you cut or use the blade, and they peck your pocket. Everything good about a flipper is done better with a front flipper, and thumb studs/opening holes are all around more reliable and don’t get in the way.
100% agree. And to make matters worse, the number of flippers that barely can manage to actually flip smoothly is remarkable.
Woah face video, it's been a little bit since I've watched a video but the first time I've seen his face
Also Balisongs poopoo town? I respectfully disagree
Mickey mouse impression is on point. 😂
OTFs scare me frankly.
Hahaha “not scientific”. I love it. Thanks for the great and entertaining content.
What the hell is a gravity??😂
Button lock is the best. Enough said. Lol.
Buck 110 = gigachad tier
And where is my Opinel poo poo town???
Who are you again and your job title 👍 thanks
I am Metal Complex. My job is Metal Complex
Poopoo town = apply ointment to the affected area!
No Opinel? 😂😂😂
