More Antique Locks, and Picking a Rotary Mail Lock [162]

As promised, I have a package with some great antique Yale locks - including what I am calling a "handbag" lock. Then, we'll pick an antique mail lock, designed to count how many times it was opened. The mail lock comes to me from Chris Capune.

That seems somehow kind of profound, to be able to look at a counter of hundreds people who have opened that lock over possibly almost 100 years and be demonstrably, visibly connected to them.

That *is* profound, isn't it? I have a lot of 1890's locks, and still get amazed that many of them were bought, used and then dropped in a drawer or cabinet before my Grandfather (born in 1899) was even around. And imagine the stories behind the things these locks protected. Thanks for your input!

Some really nice brass lock! I think I like the Baffler best. On the postal lock, can you reset the counter or do you just keep counting up till 9999 and starts at 0000 again?

I am partial to the baffler as well. I’ve already popped it open. Just looking for a key blank now. On the counter, it will go to 9999 and then the lock will not open again. If there needs to be disassembled to reset it. I learned that from Lockpicking lawyer’s video number 285 where he guts one of these. Very interesting inside.
