I read the other day what i think sounds like a good idea for keeping the pinion on. Grind the end of the set screw that bottoms out on the motor shaft flat. Set screws usually have a little rounded end...i guess if you grind it flat it will give you a better bite on the motor shaft. Don’t know if it will help...but it sounded like a solid idea lol.
Better still would be metal weld or a well engineered pinion that has to be heated enough for thermal expansion to just get it over the shaft. Once cooled - solid fit from ALL sides and uniformly. Forgot to add, the bite is only better if the mating surfaces have 1) an increased surface area and 2) more friction from being tighter. Problem is that's more stress on the 1 small area (the grub crew and threaded section of the pinion) For 2) the only method is to tighten more, but for 1 and 2 without being able to re-engineer the pinion, your method is a good idea. By flattening the head (male) into a point of the shaft you make the same shape (a flattened section - female) you increase the contact area of screw and shaft and friction. Your (lol) idea is science and it will help a lot :-) go for it. Because you think, it is a good idea you where capable of coming up with by yourself before you read about it. Just take care not to narrow the shaft by over doing it, you want the minimal material away but flat on flat. Do the start work with a Dremel (I don't have one) for speed but finish with a fine file. The Dremel is a rotary tool and you want as flatter surface as possible and that's why a file is better once you find a way to lock the shaft from spinning! while you work on it. A Dremel is probably the best option when working at 90 degrees to the shaft but you still want to keep it from moving so maybe get the cog on just enough to use the screw to tighten it onto the top of the shaft. Also bear in mind this very fast little cog isn't doing the torque work, it's doing the effort work by number of cycles....later stages of the drive train have the torque issues. My answer was over detailed I guess but sometimes you have to trust logic and not other people. It takes confidence to do stunts and tricks with a large mass that is potential energy moving at a great speed that could actually kill you, so have some faith in tinkering your toys to make them better :-) Engineering and science.
I have both of theses trucks also,,,,I noticed you didn’t mention the weakness of the kraton chassis,,,I bent mine just doing mild bashing...now I guess I’m going to spring for the m2c chassis,,which is not the cheapest thing to purchase,,,but is needed. Along with straightening or replacing the chassis supports and replacing the rear diff housing,,,I consider this a huge miss on armma part,,,,hope they improve this issue,,,,,other than that. I love both of these units,,,wouldn’t trade them for the world......great stuff....
I didn’t get into that as I have not had any issues with the chassis bending. It may be the new braces... not sure. But I usually try only to comment on issues I have had. And as of now my chassis is still good.
Yup... Bought a Mojave, lasted a few runs (guess I'm hard on it🤙) Had to replace the chassis with M2C, M2C +2 hubs, M2C shock tower braces, M2C shock standoffs, Vitavon diff cases, CRCU hinge pin holders, Basherqueen full carbon fiber set, GPM braces, HR brace holders, HR hub carriers, hi kg servo, motor fan, chassis cover, GPM axles full set and thicker springs. Did I miss anything🤣
@@surfside75 Yup, I believe in upgrading for strength...but not going overboard,,just enough to strengthen in crucial areas....I finally got mine right without the expensive add ones,,,,no issues yet,,and I’m also pretty hard on my stuff.....RIP IT...👈😀
This is by far the best, most unbiased and honest comparison vid I’ve seen on these trucks. Thanks. Having said that..... I just got a Kraton 8s after Christmas. The exploded view diagram says the center diff already has 20mill diff fluid.
Yeah Arrma changed to 20 million in the center diff. The first release of the v1.5 still had 1 million in them. Changing the center diff to 20 million is no longer a worry.
my brother awesome vid. I had the same issue with my xmaxx esc but got it replaced for free and the pinion was coming loose all the time. my LHS took care of that mess. just got my kraton 8s 2 days ago and my goodness is the thing a beast. As you said earlier both rigs are a must have. Great job 👏 👍 👌
I am a proud Arrma outcast owner and a buddy of mine is a die hard Traxxas guy. Hahaha sorry about his broken luck. All I can say is dont waste the money on the xmaxx any same level Arrma rc is better than any of the price comparable rc period. I have killed many models and hands down Arrma is the beast. Great video and sorry about the dust collector. J/s
Since changing out the stock servo I can’t keep the XMAXX running. Went through 4 in the past month. The pinion problem happened to me once and never again. Have the worst luck in the world with my EREVO 2.0. Esc, servos, motors, you name it. RC has endless variables.
Thanks for the great input on the differences between the XMAXX vs Kraton 👍🏻. I have the Kraton 8s and have been thinking of getting the Xmaxx. Now I know if I pull the trigger on purchasing the XMAXX I will need to purchase some additional stuff like a spur gear and pinion gear. As well I did click the like and I subscribed
i drill a divett into my motorshafts where the grub screw lands, that way the it has somewhere to sit and locks in nicely, those shafts arent hardened and drill and grind easily, if you go with the 1600kv that 20T is gonna be fast as hell! maybe even too much, if you do the 1600 id buy your 1275 as mine burnt up today! you could go either way
I got an X-maxx last year and love that thing. I haven't had any issues with the pinion or spur other that the pinion coming loose a couple of times. I put some lock tight on there and that seemed to fix the issue. I run all the electronics stock and haven't had any major issues. The ESC overheated a couple times, but after I beat the heck out of that truck. I am not easy on that truck. Broke the body the first time out after I jumped it 30+ feet. The thing is built like a tank and I have no complaints as of yet. I may get the Max 6 ESC at some point, but I definitely don't recommend getting anything until the stock components break. It really is a complete waste of money. Also, get the unbreakable body and Proline Badland tires. You will not be disappointed.
Great Video 👍 I would love to see a side by side and running comparison of all the different wheel combinations you have on the truck ! I've just bought some Louise x Pioneers , interested to see how the power hobby raptors would perform aswell !
Would you be able.to.advise what size bolt.or.nut is used for decorative effect on each wheel ( the ones around the main hub )? I've ordered some Raptors and I was thinking of swapping the little nuts or bolts for red aluminium ones for effect !
I have an 8S Xmaxx with a max6 and 20T tekno pinion and 50T GDS spur gear and have never had an issue with the pinion coming lose. The tekno pinion has a much larger grub screw.
I just bought two 4S batteries and a charger in prep for an X-Maxx and now I'm a bit pissed I'm gonna have to order parts and I don't have the truck yet.
been torn between buying a Kraton or an XMaxx, and internal conflict i always arrive at is one where i'm thinking "if i buy an xmaxx, i'm going to be tearing out at least ~300 bucks worth of what i paid for out of the box". this video sealed the deal for me. i'm going with the Kraton XBR roller.
Guys, have anyone ever count how much does both cars cost if you will not but the RTRs, but just buy the parts which You want and assemble them from the scrach? I am thinking about it as it is hard to sell original parts like TRX ESC or Arrma radio and take some sense money. So maybe instead wasting money for the RTR where a lot of parts must be replaced, it will be better to buy parts which are needed and have sth like "kit-version" with already upgraded parts? :D
Daniel noname I have never done the math on that but I have always thought if you were going to get one of these vehicles and then highly modify it you would be better off to just start with a chassis and build it up from there I know you can Bobby chassis the bowl kids and a lot of the parts for the xmaxx Probably for a couple of hundred bucks not being any electronics or wheels and tires but you could probably get a roller going for like 300 bucks
New Sub here man! Great stuff and I appreciate the straight talk and honesty. Good info on the electrics and issues with both trucks. As for me, July 2020,im gonna try and get the Outcast 8s of course 🎯🚀🚀 but I do love both these trucks
You helped a lot but, now I'm even more unsure.. glad I have a Losi Baja Rey Raptor and two Arrma Mojave V2 too keep me entertained while I make up my mind✔️
Damn...your x maxx looks like something I would buy straight out of the box today.....congratulations on an awesome rig...I recently got a cen reeper and I've had no problems its fuckn awesome the only thing I see needs help is it could be wider on wheel stance I'm thinking the weak shock oil swapped for thicker oil would offset that and keep it planted or add extra shocks which should definitely negate the suspension roll
@@JasonPerrinRCVlogs I was really interested in the x maxx....but damn it's got too many problems its not worth the extra investment...but yours is definitely the best one I've seen I'm impressed and the enthusiasm you have for the hobby really shows in the video I'll b subscribing......
I was having the same issue with my XMAXX. Now the Kraton has a snap ring in the motor shaft to stop the pinion from sliding. I am receiving my Kraton 8S Monday. Sick of the XMAXX pinion issue. Now would I be able to put a snap ring on the Traxxas motor shaft???
Did you really mean 20 million center diff fluid in the Kraton center diff? I thought 1 million was the thickest you could get. Where do you find 20 million weight?
I am not a Traxxas fan boy at all actually I hate a Traxxas vehicles but the xmaxx is awesome,...Technically you don't have to buy anything for a new X-Maxx 8s, if the speed control does go bad within a month or six months then you can upgrade it at that point, the new tires are absolutely fine as long as you're not driving like an idiot and letting them round out like crazy, so far my pinion and spur have held up and I've had the truck for a month if they do break then I'll upgrade but none of this has to be done before you leave the hobby shop, some people have bad luck absolutely I believe that....but that goes with every ready to run car. The X-Maxx at least looks and drives like a monster truck The arrma would be awesome but it's not a monster truck it's just a big truggy which is why a lot of people aren't interested in it if they actually made a monster truck I'm sure they would do a wonderful job and probably sell a ton.
My pinion and spur have lasted the first 2 packs so I think it's prolly more about how you are punching it off the line. Mine is brand new, swapped out to Max 5 ESC before I eeven ran it, no problem with spur and pinion. BUT I am on punch level 3 and not really popping on it hard at the start. Also we have the same charger, hyperion. What PSU are you using? I am using a 12v 750 watt but kinda wondering about the 24v upgrade.

It takes confidence to do stunts and tricks with a large mass that is potential energy moving at a great speed that could actually kill you, so have some faith in tinkering your toys to make them better :-) Engineering and science.
Also helps if you drill a notch in motor shaft to lock in the pinion set screw
Installed the Radical RC Bash Bar, pretends the chassis from getting buffed down, and adds strength.
Yup... Bought a Mojave, lasted a few runs (guess I'm hard on it🤙) Had to replace the chassis with M2C, M2C +2 hubs, M2C shock tower braces, M2C shock standoffs, Vitavon diff cases, CRCU hinge pin holders, Basherqueen full carbon fiber set, GPM braces, HR brace holders, HR hub carriers, hi kg servo, motor fan, chassis cover, GPM axles full set and thicker springs. Did I miss anything🤣
@@surfside75 Yup, I believe in upgrading for strength...but not going overboard,,just enough to strengthen in crucial areas....I finally got mine right without the expensive add ones,,,,no issues yet,,and I’m also pretty hard on my stuff.....RIP IT...👈😀
Nice vid - thank you! Did you ever sort out the pinion issue?
This is by far the best, most unbiased and honest comparison vid I’ve seen on these trucks. Thanks. Having said that.....
I just got a Kraton 8s after Christmas. The exploded view diagram says the center diff already has 20mill diff fluid.
Yeah Arrma changed to 20 million in the center diff. The first release of the v1.5 still had 1 million in them. Changing the center diff to 20 million is no longer a worry.
The XMaxx just called for me a little louder......😂
The clear choice is to get both!
Exactly! 😉
Sana all
Thats not what I get from it Kraton all day IMO
Marvin Headrick I have both but love my 8s Kraton more.
X-MAXX is a great bashing truck, gonna pull the plug and get the Arrma Kraton 8s myself. Nice comparison video! Subbed
my brother awesome vid.
Thanks! I think I will get the outcast 8s soon or wait for an upgrade version
Since changing out the stock servo I can’t keep the XMAXX running. Went through 4 in the past month. The pinion problem happened to me once and never again. Have the worst luck in the world with my EREVO 2.0. Esc, servos, motors, you name it. RC has endless variables.
you've had some bad luck with the Xmaxx, the only problem i've had was some bad bearings and that's it
Thanks for the great input on the differences between the XMAXX vs Kraton 👍🏻. I have the Kraton 8s and have been thinking of getting the Xmaxx. Now I know if I pull the trigger on purchasing the XMAXX I will need to purchase some additional stuff like a spur gear and pinion gear. As well I did click the like and I subscribed
Allegedly the newer xmaxes have machining pinions & spurs.
Make sure to grab RPM rear hubs. Most important upgrade. Weird this guy didn't mention it.
Ya my gears have been perfect 👌 not a problem anymore
Im a complete noob who beat the piss out of my xmaxx and havent had any gear issues. Nobody i know has.
i drill a divett into my motorshafts where the grub screw lands, that way the it has somewhere to sit and locks in nicely, those shafts arent hardened and drill and grind easily, if you go with the 1600kv that 20T is gonna be fast as hell! maybe even too much, if you do the 1600 id buy your 1275 as mine burnt up today! you could go either way
Good to know. I honestly assumed they would have been hardened.
I want a truck I don’t have to work on every time I take it out. The Kreaton for me. Thank you!
99% of people would say go with the xmaxx then... this dude just has bad luck or isnt doing something right. Look st the comments all disagreeing
Great Video 👍
I would love to see a side by side and running comparison of all the different wheel combinations you have on the truck !
I've just bought some Louise x Pioneers , interested to see how the power hobby raptors would perform aswell !
I am going to be doing one shortly. I received my 24mm wheel nuts for the Xmaxx.
Would you be able.to.advise what size bolt.or.nut is used for decorative effect on each wheel ( the ones around the main hub )?
I've ordered some Raptors and I was thinking of swapping the little nuts or bolts for red aluminium ones for effect !
Matthew Latham they come that way.
The Arrma behave like an Erevo . I love both these truck.
Great Video, Great info, I have both and could not agree with you more. Keep up the good work.
I have an 8S Xmaxx with a max6 and 20T tekno pinion and 50T GDS spur gear and have never had an issue with the pinion coming lose. The tekno pinion has a much larger grub screw.
Are you using a stainless set screw on the pinion? Stainless always backs out especially in 1/5 scale applications.
Nope.
Have you got a link for the duratrax hatchet wheels and tyres please
Enjoyed the video, appreciate the extensive information on both RC Trucks, I have a better idea of what to look for
Thanks
I just bought two 4S batteries and a charger in prep for an X-Maxx and now I'm a bit pissed I'm gonna have to order parts and I don't have the truck yet.
Very nice video and comparison 👌I like Arrma vehicles, but I still have a huge hunger for X-maxx. Hopefully I can get one sooner or later 😁🤘
been torn between buying a Kraton or an XMaxx, and internal conflict i always arrive at is one where i'm thinking "if i buy an xmaxx, i'm going to be tearing out at least ~300 bucks worth of what i paid for out of the box". this video sealed the deal for me. i'm going with the Kraton XBR roller.
Hola. Que tal esos amortiguadores del Xmaxx?
Six months and counting on my pinion and spur on my xmaxx. Only had the pinion come loose. Added lock tight and still going. Just depends id say
Anybody try raising up the body mounts on the Kraton 8s and put a proline raptor body on it?
This is a great idea. Get the best of both worlds
New Sub here man! Great stuff and I appreciate the straight talk and honesty.
Good info on the electrics and issues with both trucks.
As for me, July 2020,im gonna try and get the Outcast 8s of course 🎯🚀🚀 but I do love both these trucks
You found one of the best channels if your into sending trucks insane distances over and over. You'll see when tou watch
I haven't broken the pinion or the spur gears
I have had no problem with mine either... I'm also running proline MX-43 trenchers.
I have on the 2nd run but I had the replacements already waiting - luckily it was at the end of the run
That happened with the slash I had broke right when I put in a lipo
Great video on both trucks.. that happens to my friends Xmaxx all the time ..🏎💨🤝💯
Oh geez. :(
You helped a lot but, now I'm even more unsure.. glad I have a Losi Baja Rey Raptor and two Arrma Mojave V2 too keep me entertained while I make up my mind✔️
the pinion, gear and max 6, do these that you mentioned that are more durable make it alot faster as well? since the stock is around 43 mph
Have you run into Xmaxx servo issues? I have toasted two 2085X servos recently. I think it might be the HR servo saver.
They don’t like water
Man I almost bought an Xmas nice truck loved the power but didn’t seeing your video now I see why thanks.
I’ll be getting another one. I only sold mine because I got a great offer on it.
Have you tried using a drill bit to dimple where the set screw goes ?
It works
Awesome comparison, thank you
Did you really mean 20 million center diff fluid in the Kraton center diff? I thought 1 million was the thickest you could get. Where do you find 20 million weight?
Yes, 20 Million. Traxxas and a few other companies make it. The X-maxx has 20 million in their center diff.
I think I need both I was going to get a Xmaxx first but because I drive on OnRoad more I’m thinking I should get a 8s Kraton idk.
what u get?
@@Jeff.55649 I been getting into jumping lately so now I’m back to thinking Xmaxx lol I’m trying to wait until fall. which one would you recommend?
You are correct .
I’m picking mine up next week. (Traxxas Xmaxx) What should I buy to have as extra. And what should I upgrade immediately? Thanks guys
Noticed the great hobbies sticker. Great Canadian hobby store that always treat you right
Yes that they do.
How about the Arrma outcast 8s? I'm stuck between the Kraton 8s or outcast 8s
Link or list of must upgrades for the x maxxx out of box would be awesome!
What kind of run time do you get out of both trucks before you have to recharge batteries
How can you have the some fun if the pinion keeps coming lose
Loctite my guy loctite
@@lilnash7 i believe he was asking OP since he said he has tried both blue and red loctite with no luck.
@@eddiediaz3480 the op youtuber also breaks his stuff in minutes when most people go months just fine... so maybe people who have sucess should answer lmao
@@andyvannort2743 i was telling nash that the OP, he was asking what the YTuber was using since what nash recommended he has already tried and had no luck. Maybe the YTuber uses a different type of thread locker that the OP hasn't used. So how about grow up and try to learn something instead of trying to be a troll n add lmao to the end of your post.
@@eddiediaz3480 lmfao youre the one trolling... i gave sound advice saying "people with sucess can answer the question" youre thebone ranting and bitching like a baby. Trucks running at 6:55, 14:31, and 20:11.
You can most like use a file and a a small pair of vice grips to extend that flat.
What size are the hatchet x wheels on xmaxx... Yea now that I got a upgraded xmaxx I'ma get the kraton next v2
Cool content brother,👍
All good and ARRMA is a excellent brand no doubt. However I could never get into their body shells... YUK! Without the body on it looks awesome just like the XMAXX. Other than that both are awesome machines👍
Still running original 6s xmaxx, never lost pionion, always 17/54,, 6s tires suck. Best tire still traxxas ,lightest is best for all rc. Still original gears to date. Kershaw design wheels make xmaxx handle like kraton, less out of control wheelies. Over size wheel bearings are the must. Still run slipper with 8s gears
I had a Traxxas T-max & it broke EVERYTIME I drove it i then bought a XTR mammoth & I absolutely luv it it will do circles around the t max
Use washers and push your motor back a bit then you wont have to dremal the shaft on the motor?
3 of us have been bashing xmaxxs for months with stock pinions dude never an issue
Great video I'm getting the kraton
I have the same with my losi lst xxl. And my team associated rc8.t
Rc8.t never ever breaks. Losi is bigger and looks cooler. But always problems.
So we can conclude, truggy or truggy based mt's are better
How bent is the chassis on the arrma kraton
What if you check the clearance between gears before you run it?
Shouldn’t you change the shock fluid on the kraton?
I had the same problem with the opinion i used tire glue instead of loctite hasn't come off yet that one yr ago 🙃
Hi buddy just a quick ? has the 8s X max stranded ESC have a punch control option.. mine seems a little sluggish on acceleration running 24 /46 spur
Sadly no. That’s why the max 6 is such a nice option.
@@JasonPerrinRCVlogs Thanks for the reply .. Its a shame there is no punch setting does need it now after changing spur at pinion gears. I just set up for jumping. May have to change pinion gear down. Maybe its the badlands mx wheels that have weighed it down a little This truck is new to me but love the hobby so easy to spend money on it..lol
Red locktite is pretty hardcore stuff. I cant believe it worked itself loose. Man that sucks. Weld it.
How do you like those hatchet x tires?
What about everyone who bent the chassis on the Kraton at launch... I own Traxxas & Arrma vehicles so I'm no hater. I just don't like the idea that you spend $899 on an K8S then you wonder if you should buy an aftermarket chassis just to be safe. Sure hope the upgrades fixed that problem.
Jason, how do You clean Your cars? They look like brand new from the box, never used :D
I run a lot on grass. They don’t ever get really dirty unless the grass is wet.
What’s faster out the box, Xmaxx or k8?
I got an xmaxx, with hot racing swaybar and love as its body roll less. I also have the set screw backout at full speed one time n it’s was scare as hell as there is no stoping force. Haven’t broke anything except the high speed launch and stop on pavement n broke couple tooth’s on the spur.
Make a flat spot with a dremel on the motor shaft where the grub screw goes in; you will never have loose pinion again!
😉👍
Super video and good comparison. I have the X-Maxx among other cars and now I'm gonna get the Kraton 8s! And you're guilty because of your video!
😜
Nothing beats an XMAXX
Cen reeperv2 will be the xmaxx killer lol good vid thanks
Sadly no it won’t. Not because it won’t be a better truck. But because people won’t buy it.
Cen Reeper? What's that?
Just kidding, but might as well be the case when you compare X-Maxx to it. Same can be said if you compare the Kraton 8s to the Cen. I never even seen a Cen Reeper in person.
