Excellent video Nick. I think it's a great benefit to see this material posted. Yes, it's not the same old party in Namibia, but for those who are looking to live aboard and collecting thoughts (like us), these are truly useful. As an Eagle Scout, I find myself often times too prepared and carrying more than I need. It's a fine line between wise and unnecessary. Looks like you're pretty well thought out, and if catastrophe strikes, you'll be a survivor because of it. 👍 ~ Josh & Jill
Your right spot on Nick, you can never have enough tools or parts onboard, be prepared for the worst and sail home in one piece or have a really good life raft.
Admittedly, I have watched thousands of hrs of sailing related vids. This is one of the most useful vids I've seen this year. Well done and thank you.

These videos are great! Had to pause and rewind a few times as I'm taking notes and making my hubby's Christmas list for him. Every man wants tools and spares under the tree, right?
The difference between a offshore cruiser and a coastal cruiser. The amount of planning put into it. The tools. The spares. The ability to fix something, or jerry rig something anywhere.

Thank you for this great video... my wife recently said 'oh but we won't need all these tools when the boat is ready and we leave...?' Haha .. and then some my dear!! The discussion of course was about locker space.. I guess it's the clothes that get left behind!!

Thanks for taking the time to wreck your boat to show us this. It's really important people know about spares, tools etc. This is the sort of knowledge and experience you've as accumulated over years and it's a huge help.. Hope to meet you one day to but you both a beer to say thanks..
All good stuff, cheers. I've got an ancient Yamnar 2QM15 aboard Taranto, the first couple of years I had to change the water pump impeller heaps, later the shaft bearings were changed and It doesn't chew through them as much now. But what a nightmare it was getting at the back cover plate! But then a mate (like the ones down the pub you refer to) said just take the thing off! What a revelation. Two hose clamps and a couple of bolts and I'm changing impellers on the galley table. Changed my life :-)

Another great video guys. I am rather pleased to discover that there is someone who carries as many spares and possibly more tools than I do. The spare starter motor is a must for our Yanmar, as if the exhaust elbow ( another spare ! ) starts leaking, it drips hot salt water into the starter pinion with dire consequences! Like the box of ‘O’ rings - must acquire.

Thanks for taking the time to unpack your kit just for show and tell. It is great info and inspires discussion and decision making for many. Organization seems to be key. Despite how much of a pain in the neck it probably was to do this video, I found it quite useful! As always, thanks for sharing!

These "other side of cruising" videos are very nice. It is good to see the things that also happen on a boat besides enjoying yourself in the sun and sand. Thank you for the ideas about your spares.
Thank you for this 2 part series. I really hope you make an episode about what safety equipment you have and uses onboard. Everything from life vests, life raft, mob transmitters to safe systems like ais, epirb etc.

More digressions than Ronnie Corbett but still love it. All those tools only seem like overkill when things don't go wrong, and as every sailor knows, that never happens ....ever. Keep the vids coming!

I have one of those boxes of O rings. Only used one of them out of the box once but saved me a fortune. Like you said ... Five quid from Amazon could save you hundreds down the line ... Great video and well explained Nick ... awesome ..
In the the electrical realm, you mentioned DC current measurement, which is a very useful capability in a 12 volt world. One thing in this regard that is not so well known is that there are now clamp on DC Current measuring multimeters. These are very useful for example, for testing alternator output or current balance in a parallel battery stack, etc. without having to disconnect things to but the meter in series. I carry the Fluke 365 everyday because the clamp is on a 1 meter cable for remote use.

Great stuff, as always! I had been working on a tools list spreadsheet based on what I found on CF over the past few months, and have incorporated everything from your vids (tools only since spares depend more on the boat and it's systems). Thanks for taking the time to do this!

I must admit that you two are amongst the very top in tools, parts and knowlege (most important) to use what you have to fix things.
It seems that it was about 9 months to 1 year ago now that I bumped into a video by a fellow on a cat who had converted one of the forward births to a workshop aka man cave that was truly epic. Wish I could find the damn thing, I know you would truly unfit to live with though for at least a week after watching though.

Great vid love your ranting very funny . As for your tip on the pump for the heads I changed out the whole bog for £119 so the wife was happy with some new porcelain to and a new seat. Keep up the good work , Darrell SV Angel Pumpkin
I love the new heat shrink with the bonding / sealing gel inside of it. It literally secures the electrical joint/ connection away from air and water. Incredibly handy for boats
Great job to you both once again, those spares sound logical to me, so good advice for us wannabe cruisers, appreciate the effort that it took to get all that crapola out from all those storage nooks & crannies, cheers! 👍🏼🙏🏻
Very informative keep up the good work you two. Of course there are people who find it boring. I think I recognized one of them as a chronic borrower.... Always include the ear, eye and breathing protection. A lot of survival kits on the raft, fail to supply this necessity to sleep. Ear plugs weigh near nothing. If no other use they work great for fishing floats. Now that I'm certain you them -you won't hear me anymore and I promised myself not to go on and on. So...

My favorite boat tool is a pair f Channel Locks. Big adjustable pipe wrenches...good for working off hoses, filters, and anything you need a big wrench for really. I'll bet you have them, but just thought I'd share.

I would love to see the list you speak of. While I have every tool under the sun, I'm not entirely sure what specific spares I should have besides the basics.

Also I had a list of to dos. after a while I learned what needed to be replaced when. So I automatically did my PM (predetermined maintenance) without thought. And I didn't have to do inspections like you do. I Also had my spares for the exact reasons you mentioned. I learned this while in the Navy
If you have a vacuum bagger / sealer, have you considered putting items like the starter motor in a sealed bag to protect against the "salt air"

very good thank you for that .I thought I was the only one ho thought lots of spares was a good thing , of course I tend to over do it so i'm trying to scale back a little bit.
Another job well done on this episode. Looks like you keep a well thought out stock of spares and repair parts. One thing I would have liked to see (maybe you plan on covering it in a future episode?) was any spares or repair parts for your running and/or standing rigging. I also assume that you keep spares onboard for your dink? I know, it's always something ;)

Nick, it's clear you have a lot of tools in a lot of places on the boat. I was wondering when you are on a passage or planning a passage, do you place specific tools in specific "quick access" locations based on the probability of what could happen? i.e the mast coming down, hitting a reef if there is one in the area your sailing or lightning strike? Really enjoy these sets of videos in addition to the cruising lifestyle stuff, keep up the good work, both of you.
These are great for those of us watching that are getting ready to go. The sailing and location vids are great but this is the stuff that is invaluable to people like me. Aside from the bits the ARC requires you to have to participate, did you acquire many of these as you went along or did you do a chunk of additional spares provisioning before you left port for the first time?

Haha! I love WestMarine though. I am a fanboy. I'm going to miss having access to a really great Pro account. The discount is great. The folks at WestMarine are all awesome and very helpful and knowledgeable. I have done a heavy refit on our boat and drop by the store at least once a week to shop for the past year and a half. They all know me by name at the Chicago store. I'm going to miss those guys when we untie the lines for good.

Oops hit the button too soon- the most important thing is you have an analytic ‘mechanical’ mind that’s sees the principle of a mechanism - this way you know why you carry a spare not just a replacement for something and you know how to press it into service outside its usual context - they call it ‘macgyver- ing’ over here in the US after an old 90’s TV show. Hope you get to Florida so my wife and I can buy you both a round

Superb dude ! Preparation makes being safe easier. I do like that you factor into your essential survival equipment your left fore arm hair as an emergency nail brush for your right hand fingernails lol what bastards picked that up ! Don't get a complex just extract their teeth and change arms! How do you clean your toe nails in a survival situation? Terysa we need to know?? ....
