why did they make it wired? just makes the desk feel real cluttered. wires to connect the two halves and then another wire to the PC?

Wireless would make it very hard to develop the firmware. Either you have to stick with ZMK, which many people will not be familiar with, or you'll need to tweak QMK to a VERY deep level.
