    By saying that she was "as foul" as the smallpox could make her, I think all her husband meant was that her disfigurement was as bad as the disease could render it - - - not that he himself found her particularly repellent. This was just his honest record of the severity of her affliction. Obviously, some escaped pockmarks altogether, some had few and/or slight ones, & some were deeply & extensively pitted. However, many others just died. So she was fortunate, at least, to the extent that she lived. Her husband obviously remained her good, loyal partner, for we have no record of him casting her aside. 🛡️

    Queen Elizabeth should count herself lucky to have had such good care... - she built up her immune system to face the next 'big one' the following year when there was an epidemic of the plague in 1563 in London. . . All the more surprising she had not appreciated Mary Dudley's service any more than she did... because no doubt Mary saved her life via her good and diligent care at the risk of her own life actually. . .

    I remember first reading about Lady Sidney’s smallpox disfigurement when I was a kid, just getting into history, and thinking how cruel it was. One of the greatest achievements of modern medicine was the eradication of this truly horrible disease. PS, whenever your camera gets bumped, I know some of your darling critters are around!

    Like your bookcase in the background. There are so many interesting titles plus the dolls. The animals are truly missed. Mary was a perfect person to have at court being well education and locality. What happened to her was just a roll of the dice in those day. I went through all the children’s diseases myself: measles, mumps etc. Hope you are feeling better. God Speed.

    For your old: 1oz whiskey, 1oz honey, 1oz lemon mixed into 1 up HOT TEA. Drink this mixture down while its hot, go to bed with enough covers to make you sweat. I promise you a good nights sleep and feeling better the next day. ( From your friend in America who uses this when I get a cold.) Frances

      For onset of respiratory infection if it starts to get really bad: use Breath Easy tea with honey, for a special and yummy touch French Vanilla, never fails. The best way for this is at night so you get sleep, and drink lots of fluids. Oh I also use warm or hot water.

Mary caught smallpox also, and suffered terribly. Very sad what happened later during her service to Elizabeth. Thank you Claire. 👑👍

    I wonder what kind of compensation they would have appreciated for their years of service to the queen? Elizabeth couldn't help falling ill, and certainly Mary required care when she grew sick herself, the risk being as great for her caregivers. Expectations being what they were, it seems strange they would feel resentment. It makes me wonder if there was something unusual about Elizabeth's later treatment of them. So many mysteries in our histories!

      Penshurst is stunning, I was quite young when I first went there, I had seen Anne of the thousand days and imagined doing a Genieve Bujold in the gardens, where they filmed. "BULLSEYE" that tickles me the way "Cromwell" says it when Anne says I must ask the king to show me your palace at Hampton Court!!

    I've encountered a lot discrepant accounts about how badly Elizabeth was disfigured by smallpox. Some say it left no trace, others that it left her deeply scarred and bald. What primary sources do we have, and what do they say about this?

    • @anneboleynfiles
      @anneboleynfiles  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      People often say that she wore the lead makeup to cover he scars, but that makeup was what was in fashion. According to the primary sources, she had some marks, but they weren't bad, e.g. "She was also lucky not to be disfigured by the disease, although she did apparently have some scarring". There isn't mention of her looks changing dramatically after this bout of smallpox in ambassadors' dispatches.

    All your feline and canine babies want to be where you are. Have you ever seen anyone who had smallpox? When I was a small child I met an older woman who'd had smallpox as a young woman. Her face, neck and presumably her chest, looked like the flesh had been shredded and then poorly mended, all from the pox. It made an indelible impression on me. Never since have I seen anything so horrific. Acne scars are horrible, it is true. But nothing like the disfigurement of smallpox. This poor woman, Mary Sidney. I can only imagine how this affected her mentally. And then treated shabbily because...?

      smartoldlady So wonderful that we now have a vaccine for that terrible disease. I’m just mystified by people (parents) who refuse to vaccinate their children. Obviously they haven’t seen the results of someone who’s actually had these diseases. Many people in this era are afraid that the vaccines may result in autism. I don’t understand how they believe that since there are many other possible causes, like almost every woman, her mother & perhaps their grandmother took birth control pills for years, and drank fluoridated water, or simple ate food where the soil & water had been contaminated through the centuries upon centuries of us humans contaminating it with our gas, coal, & radioactive materials.

    Hi Claire
    In the Tudor period, was it believed that the monarch was seen as God’s representative and that whatever the religious faith of said monarch meant that it was seen as the “True Religion”, hence the constant changes between Catholicism and Protestantism?
