    As you revere Queen Anne Boleyn, I am an ardent admirer of her daughter Queen Elizabeth I. So ironic that the strong monarch King Henry desired was his baby girl with Anne. She survived so much in her life and kept her wits. Fortunately she had men who helped her reign - Cecil, Walsingham and others. She loved and lost. I crave to know all the details of her life and thank you for this video that so tenderly recounts her passing.

    I think if she had married, as all her advisers wished, we would remember her more as a consort than a Queen, no matter her title. She was so brilliant to refuse.

      The fate of poor Mary Stuart showed the perils Elizabeth escaped. Once she'd produced "an heir male" she was no longer needed by the lairds, who would rather rule for an infant king than obey an adult queen.

    I have the DVD series from the '70's that has Glenda Jackson as Elizabeth I. Her death scene is so touching the way everyone knelt when she passed - the people in the room and the guards in the halls - so touching & so powerful.

      @@arwenitaofdoom9041 It is clear that Blanchett was inspired by Jackson's acting. I love Cate Blanchett as an actress and believe she did her best to channel Elizabeth, but she was let down by two extremely inaccurate scripts which perpetuate untruths about the character. As a lifelong admirer of Elizabeth and cinema lover, I am upset by those two films which feature a great actress (Blanchett) but do not do any good for Elizabeth's portrayal in popular culture, because they repeat the old and tired 'female emotions vs power' trope....and they ascribe one of Elizabeth's greatest achievements to another person: Walsingham i credited by the films as coming up with the notion of Elizabeth's image as the immortal Virgin Queen/Gloriana. In fact, Elizabeth did inspire that image all by herself and seems to even have had to fight her advisors and courtiers for the control of it

    I'm curious what Elizabeth thought of her own reign. In her golden speech she mentions how England may see wiser and more powerful princes, but none will ever love them better. I believe her. The experience she had amongst her people and the traumas and tragedies she endured gave her a truly sympathetic and human edge to her reign that is impossible to manufacture.

      Elizabeth must have never gave her mother, Anne Boleyn, a proper burial because her mother stianed the hands of so many nobels, and remember, a monarch cannot sit on the throne whithout the support of their nobles. Anne Boleyn was accused of high treason and adultery so imagine Queen Elizabeth trying to give her mother a proper burial, it would come off as scandalous to the nobles.

    Wonderful recounting of Elizabeth's last days. I feel bad that she was so depressed in the months (year?) leading up to her death. It does sound as if she found peace nearer the end and I’m glad for that. She was a very accomplished Queen and was obviously very intelligent and seemed to be fairly compassionate. I’m glad that so much first hand information was able to be documented throughout her reign.

At a minimum, he was related via Mary Boleyn). I read a legend that Elizabeth would not go to bed because some seer or mystic once had told her that she would not die on her feet, or some such. Of course, how many people die standing up?!

    I always think of Elizabeth's reign as the revenge of Anne Boleyn. I also think about how Henry killed her mother, essentially, because he wanted "an heir", and he could only see that possibility in a son. (I know those weren't the stated reasons, but... hmph.) Henry wanted a legitimate son, and lives, religions and fortunes would all be sacrificed to that obsession. Yet, it was in his younger daughter that Henry got his heart's desire: a ruler who could follow him and build on England's accomplishments. It reminds me that our deepest desires may come to us in ways we never could have conceived of and can't recognize. Maybe we can take Henry's folly as a lesson, and open our minds beyond our known perspective to see the gifts the universe has already laid before us.

    Elizabeth I, Anne Boleyn, Catherine of Aragon and also Lady Jane Grey were the feminists of their time in England. Maybe thats why I love them so much. In a time that women had to be submissive and were seen by men little more than birthing machines, they weren't afraid to stand up for their believes and themselves.

    I recommend the David Starkey series on Elizabeth I. It's not necessarily the only perspective on her, but having watched it many times I don't believe that the Cecils were actually the power behind the throne. If I have my facts right, she was furious that William Cecil had Mary Queen of Scots executed and dismissed him over it.

    I love this series ❤️❤️❤️ but I have a question what was Elizabeth buried in because her wardrobe was and is still legendary she must of had something planned because she didn’t want a autopsy or any postmortem so was it the normal Tudor burial with the wax linen strips used or was she buried in a planed outfit all natural death style

    • @mscott3918

      Sally TheVirginQueen That's an interesting point. As her body was wrapped in lead before being put in the coffin, I would guess it was a simple gown, without all the petticoats and farthingale she wore in life. At Westminster Abbey they have the underclothes that were on her funeral effigy. This was, apparently, so lifelike that people gasped when they saw it.
      I don't think Elizabeth herself was against a post mortem. The chief lady of her household refused to sanction one.

    Fascinating, as always, Claire.
    Question: From my reading, which I'm sure is not as extensive as yours, I have a picture of Elizabeth as, although brilliant, a ditherer... and that the Cecils...Wm & Robert, were the true powers behind the throne. One, do you think this is an accurate portrayal ? And two, do you have a book to recommend which gives a true depiction, in your opinion, of the politics and machinations behind QE I's reign? Thank you in advance.

    • @amandagrayson389
      @amandagrayson389 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Claire will probably have a better answer here but I have to put in my two cents anyway. Some historians do not think Elizabeth was a great monarch (sacrilege!). Some of them seem frustrated at her ‘wait and see’ strategy when it came to foreign and domestic policy. In other words, she didn’t also make a decision right away, but hung back to see what fell out. A great deal of the time, this strategy worked. Either the problem solved itself or the path she needed to take became clearer. As to the power behind the throne, I think Elizabeth and Burleigh worked together a lot of times. I know enough about Robert Cecil to really comment.

    • @anneboleynfiles
      @anneboleynfiles  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      No, I don't believe that. She procrastinated when it suited her to do so, but she was definitely in charge.

      The best fictional account I have come across of Elizabeth's life, relationships, and reign is "Legacy" by Susan Kaye. Even though it's a novel, it presents believable descriptions of how Elizabeth navigated through her life and realistically theorizes about her motivations, feelings, and reactions to events from childhood to her death. I have read many nonfiction accounts of Elizabeth's life and there is nothing in "Legacy" that makes me roll my eyes or upset me with the way Elizabeth or the other major characters in her life are depicted. Susan Kaye certainly did her research.

    Hi! I find the most wonderful articles on the internet that you posted as long ago as 2012, and LOVE them as much as your videos. They make me redundant in the questions I have asked you in the comments section of your videos. For that I must apologize! I may be redundant again as I plow ahead with: Am I correct in being certain that the ring you mentioned as being delivered to James as proof of her death was the locket ring that included pictures of herself and her mother? You also mention somewhere (I am forgetting where!) that Elizabeth was fond of her father, while still showing a regard for her mother in unspoken ways, i.e. the locket ring and the family portrait that depicts her wearing the "B" bling. That she escaped the bitterness that overwhelmed Mary l is something to wonder about. She certainly had important relationships her whole life. She must also have been quite the woman of her station and time, though, too, accepting a certain amount of danger as part of life. Methinks she was fortunate in her surrogates as a child and a young woman. I have a powerful affection and mysterious obsession for the woman!

    QE1 patronized Byrd and Tallis among many other fine to great composers, even protecting Byrd, a devout Catholic, from those who would persecute him, simply because she admired his music. Musica Trransalpina, the first great collection of Madrigals in England, was produced in her reign and remained a strong influence on English musical setting for centuries. For me, as a musician, there’s little else I need to know to say she was a great ruler of that “Sceptered Isle.”

    Very nice remembrance of “the virgin queen“ on the anniversary of her death. What a fascinating, savvy, survivor LOL. Yes she was queen she was a survivor. And she never married. Dare I say unheard of for that era? She was self-possessed to say the least lol. And from what I learned today. she seemed to have stayed close to her mother’s family. Seems like a good idea.
    I know this probably didn’t actually happen, but in the movie “Anne of 1000 days” The dramatization of her mothers marriage with her father Henry 8, in the very last scene, her mother undergoes a public execution by decapitation. In the last flash of that scene, you see a little girl with the red hair who witnesses this horrific act. she appears to be all by herself, and she turns around and walks herself back to the palace, and we all know in who that is and who she will become. And tho this probably literally did not happen, that last moment of the film impressed me. How that event must have shaped who she is was and how she would reign But more than that it was her aloneness that impressed me. a little girl, having lost her mother, not being even at an age to understand that, who is now going to go on with her life. It really is lonely at the top. But for Elizabeth I think it was always lonely. Somewhat by design, methinks, for she is a survivor if nothing else.

      I read in one book that when she was about 8 years old, she told a childhood friend or cousin that she would never marry. I think that was about the time that Catherine Howard was executed. If Elizabeth hadn't known her mother's fate before then, I don't see how she could have remained ignorant afterwards. The gossip about two cousins who were executed for the same "crime" must have been rampant among servants as well as courtiers. There's no way a bright child like Elizabeth could have missed it.

    Did Queen Elizabeth ever actually say (or write) that she desired King James to succeed her, or was this implied only from the hand gesture she made on her death bed? I know that Robert Cecil had secretly agreed to support James after Elizabeth's death, but I just find it odd that she didn't announce a successor. I'm sure Elizabeth didn't want a civil war to break out when she died, but she is lucky this didn't happen, leaving the question of the succession as she did.
