- You have to actually TRY this thing before you decide if it will help your game. I was NOT expecting to like it very much. I thought it would be like a glorified video game. After 10-hours of training on the SenseArena Goalie To Go system, here's my take on how they bring real-time off-ice goalie drills anywhere via VR (that's Virtual Reality for you no StarTrek geeks).
If you missed the initial unboxing video, you can find it here - • SenseArena Goalie Trai...

Step-by-step workout plans that transform your mobility, strength, speed and stamina on the ICE - this is how goalies go from untapped potential to confident and consistent.
Amazing technology. Love seeing you look into your "glove" when you make a save.
It is crazy - half the time I even turn my glove over to drop the puck out of it too - it is THAT real!
I'd be into this if you could just purchase and download the software, as I already have an Oculus Quest. Hopefully that becomes an option at some point, the program looks really useful!
They have a package if you already own the Oculus Quest. It’s only $99 for the hardware for glove/blocker but still $69/month subscription fee.
@@thisoldhouse35 Ok thanks, I did not see that option.
I am a goalie and a Vr enthusiast, The trouble with the sensors on the blocker might have to do with the fact that the Quest trackers are located on the front of the headset, John Carmack Oculus's CTO has talked about how the headset is able to extrapolate and predict where the controller sensors are and going to be if the controllers get out of view (ie covered by the side of the blocker) but its not perfect and sometimes leads to the virtual hands floating in space trying to reposition themselves as the system tries to recalculate its position, lighting levels can also affect the tracking as well. Ive tried a few of the goalie apps, might look into Sense Arena.
For those of you wondering, Yes the base controllers can give some hepatic feedback but I'm not sure the 3rd party ones do it.
Love your videos!
That is great insight - thanks for that - - it makes total sense and that might be the issue for sure. I really appreciate you taking the time to share your expertise.
@@johnblouch Not actually remotely interested in VR... but I love using it for Sense Arena -- I don't think I will get hooked - - I hope. You are right, my wallet couldn't take it!
@@johnblouch Oh some times yes, I told a fella at a VR conference what my Brian's Gnetiks cost ($3000) and he just about died, he thought computers were the be all and end all lol
Wow! That was so interesting! Thanks for making the video. I like the technology.
It is SUPER awesome!
Okay, Ms Mountain aside from the headset giving a player the most epic Nick Nolte Mugshot hair, the set up looks awesome. I got a significantly better sense of the actual gameplay versus the first time you covered this. Personally, for a home setup, I think I would wait until they develop a sensor strip to go down the front of the player's pads to add another level to the game. Then again, you mentioned overuse syndrome, so maybe keeping it simple is better.
The game, as is, looks amazing and I know a lot of former pro guys add small ice rooms onto the rinks that are their base for their business models in training, and this looks like you could take that same concept, and get a small room in a rink, throw this in there with some synthetic ice, and let the kids play without incurring that huge cost of a full sheet and a 3:1 coaching session to run larger area drills like you've shown here. I don't think the blocker glove sensors can be made to work as is, as every blocker, and glove is different. If they added an option to select your general glove shape that would be awesome. I also agree, I would want to customize the color of my glove, as I am not a fan of orange.
Your warrior glove is going to have a different angle than my CCM, or my Brian's glove. Same for the blocker, to a lesser extent, some blockers sacrafice coverage for a higher swoop etc. So it's not going to be exact 1:1, and it would probably work just as well without the glove/blocker for teaching you the tracking, as you're doing the same head movement, the same hand movements, and watching the puck all the way into your glove, or if your me, past your glove. If you're outside, tossing the tennis ball down against the wall to work on tracking the puck and catching, absolutely, put the glove on. In the past you've talked about how your glove pocket is not the way you catch with your hand.
I love you mentioned the quick look, or I often tell the kid, they're constantly counting to 3-5, to keep a census of your potential threats while focusing on the puck. Know where that shot is going to come from, once the puck is passed.
I would love to see more drill scenarios, and since it's a goalie simulator, I don't think there would be any spoilers for the game, for the big bosses.
On the big bosses joke, if they develop a simulator that worked like the old school Mutant League Hockey game (Sega Genesis, I'm old) where the screening player is a demon I can murder, it would be an immediate impulse buy of "Shut Up And Take My Money!". Pretty sure my Mutant League Hockey concept is not really skill development as much as a therapeutic goalie outlet though. If a developer can combine Skyrim with Goalie Simulator, sure, why not.
As always I enjoy watching these videos, and this is a top 3 for Christmas idea. Glad to see something good is coming out of 2020.
Coaching with a mask is not working great for me. Like trying to coach 8U-18U while being smothered with a pillow on the ice.
***OH! Video idea/suggestion, if you would be so inclined to review some masks or methods/equipment/hand arm signals whatever to facilitate coaching on the ice, in a noisy rink while wearing a mask, that would be awesome. I've tried megaphones and headsets, the sound cancelling on the microphones only picks up about less than half of my muffle speak. I've tried the standard two loop stetchy band cloth masks, and my ears are sore for a couple hours afterwards. I tried the neck wrap/bandana, feels like I'm being water boarded in SERE school, after about 45 minutes of being a shooter for my goalies in drills, but I'm a pro level sweater, so there may not be a solution. Any suggestions I'd love to hear from The Mountain. Your videos are like being able to hear from the wise monk on top of the mountain without all the climbing, and stairs. Thanks again!
Thanks for your feedback, I really appreciate it. It is a great tool and they are constantly working to make it better - I know the leg sensors are in the works and will probably be an upgrade. I like your video idea too - but since I mostly yell at kids in a gym setting, I might not be the expert on yelling at them on the ice. But seriously, I think a lot has to do with using your eyes to show some expression, so they get a sense of... he/she looks like she means business - know what I mean? Thanks for your kind words, I really do appreciate it.
You crack me up. Thanks for the video, it is great to see
Happy to amuse - ha ha - thanks!
Hi Maria, I have the same setup as you (but Hockey shot ice.) I love this product so much. A game changer for me. (FYI 62 yr old. 4 years goalie after breaking ankle.) There are so many variables to play with. I'm probably in the ten hour area now. I think I may have touched maybe 10% of the drills. Tracking is excellent anytime. I'm going to try using SA for warming up when play my first game on September 7. You mentioned screened shots. I usually just sit there and yell SCREEN. Now I'm learning to move around. Did you try the tip drill? OMG. I don't think I've stopped one yet. I will say that I agree with you 100%. This is very well set up. My on ice coach, Stephan Goyette, asked me if I thought it would put him out of a job. NO. I don't think so but it's an excellent COMPLIMENT especially for someone like me that can't take 55 minutes of shots and slides/pushes during practices. My body just can't do it. So, have 30 minutes? The set up is so fast you could get a short session anytime. OK. I just wanted to do a brain dump from someone who has a setup for you viewers. One thing, I'd like some routines instead of guessing which drills to do. I'm guessing SA will be up with that soon. Bye for now.
James McElligott I agree with you - goalie coaches are safe... but this gives a way that goalie students can practice their skills between lessons. I can actually make saves on the tip drill - it is those live shooter screen drills that crush me :) Glad to hear you are doing well with the ankle - good luck in September!
Thanks for posting! It’s nice to see how the software works.
You are welcome - you've gotta get your hands on one to try for yourself, it's amazing!
Great job Maria! Is there a vibration when you catching the puck or stopping it with the blocker?
Yeah, there is.
Oh there sure is!!!
Hi Maria!
Love this video. So inspired to get this. What are you using to capture the video output from the quest, is it an iPad Pro?
Thanks,
Matt!
Yes, it will actually stream right to your iPad (assuming your iphone too probably) using the oculus app. I do have the 11 inch iPad pro, so that's what I was using in this video. Does that help?
GoalieTrainingProTV helps a lot, thank you!!!
Matthew Brown You are welcome Matthew
Hi GoalieTrainingPro, Thank you for these reviews! I have a 10 year old who still needs to focus on technical skills and fundamental placement etc. This looks so cool & I would love to have active goalie specific things he could do at home (especially during covid) but do you feel there is any risk it could pull focus from technical fundamentals/ do more harm than good?
Yeah, it could be a bit too much for a youngster. I think I would focus more on skating technique (as long as we can stay on the ice) and even just getting out in the driveway to take shots if we get locked in again.
@@goalietraining -Thank you for your reply. Still on the fence, he has played Travel for a couple years & is on actual ice at least 3-4x per week usually (no ice shutdowns where we live, just a lot of extra free-time since we are not socializing or coming to MN for our upcoming tournament). This would give him something fun for his off ice days. I loved Hockey Dylan's comment that he thinks it might help young goalies not drop down too soon. Whatever we decide - I really appreciate all of your info.
@@dawnettawestman1859 You are most welcome - all the best!
Great vid... couple questions if you have time.... Does this do deflections and not just loan shooters, like a shot from D deflected by skater in front of net?And with the live skaters can you do 2 on ones? Since no leg pad sensor, r u able to program to avoid low shots so you dont form bad habits? And its been a few months since you posted. Still think it is a good thing to have in a goalies training regime? Sorry for all the questions... thinking of purchasing along with hockeyshot tiles.
Thanks for your time creating the review. And thanks in advance for any feedback.
Goalie dad
Yes, you can do deflections. Not 2 on 1s - - you have no D, but you can do 2 on 0. No you don't program it to not do low shots. Yes, I still think it is AWESOME!!! Glad to help.
@@goalietraining thanks for your feedback, I ordered a goalie kit from sensearena last night as well as synthetic ice (rinks are about tonshut down in mn) so my goalie can continue some form of on ice "like" training.
@@lucolson He is going to LOVE it - make sure you try it to - you will be blown away!
Did you get new artificial ice? That doesnt look like your original hockeyshot stuff
lawnknome824 Yep, I got the canned ice tiles. I just shot a full review of those as well that will go up in the next few weeks. But there are no shavings, so that’s a huge bonus
I bought this for my 10yr after your first video and he loves it. He spends 20 minutes a day training. He is also taking it to his games and uses it for his warm ups. Have you tried the cognitive parts? Tacking the disappearing pucks is hard.
Yes, I've used every single drill on there - yes, the disappearing puck is hard - the ones with the skater that goes back and forth freaks me out a little.
for me the biggest cons is the monthly subscription wich is very expensive 119$(CAD)
What if you already have vr equipment
Bignose Bunnybear not sure, I am not a sales rep for them, I would reach out and ask. I put the link to their site in the description.
Buy just the straps and the app is free to download on oculus
One time purchase of the software and pay for updates as I want them/can would be acceptable. $100 a month? No thanks, I have better ways to spend that money such as stick and puck for a month for 3 players. Three people benefit from the $100 rather than one. If it wasn't for that, I would already have this.
Definitely not for everyone - no need to explain. Have a beauty time at stick and puck, you are so lucky that you are still on the ice. Hopefully we will get back out there in the next month or so.
It's a shame they are using such a poor pricing model. They won't allow me to just subscribe to the software they force you to buy their travel case and pad attachments. I already own an oculus quest which I already have a case for, and I don't need the pad mounting straps. I just wanted to pay for the annual subscription to the software, but they said no. Honestly Maria, you are probably one of the only goalie resources out there that does not just try to get as much money as they can from goalies. Your programs are all reasonable, thanks for that!!
Ed Gregory I can see how that is frustrating for sure. But I can also appreciate how they may want to keep things simple, especially in the early phase. Maybe if they get enough request for just the membership they will create a tier for that down the road. Hope so for your sake.
Great Stuff!!!
Thanks Don 🙌
Maria pretending to be an angry user is awesome!!
Mike Altobello you should see me when I am really mad 😡 ha ha
Heavy breathing 🤣 cool technology though!
